Caged Animal
Carter stared at her as the fog began to thin.
"Treasure Island." He said flatly. "Really?"
Georgia put her hands on her hips. "What is that supposed to mean? Don't you trust me by now?"
Carter fumbled around for an answer. "Well, I mean yeah of course I do but, well.... Treasure Islands a book."
Georgia stared at him. "Of course it is. Another book. Can't people in your world think of anything original?"
Carter leant his forearms on the railing. "Apparently not."
The Jolly Roger tilted sideways, narrowly avoiding a rock.
"Look out!" Someone called from the crows nest. "More rocks to the starboard bow!"
Carter and Georgia stumbled up to the wheel, meeting Otto, Fiona and Felix beside Hook.
"What's going on?" Fiona yelled over the crew calling out behind her.
Hook shook his head, pitching the ship sideways once again. "Damn Mysterious Island!" He yelled at the open air, swerving to avoid another rock and making the teens flinch.
"Sorry." He grumbled, looking around at their startled faces and adjusting his hat. "It's geography is constantly changing. Never know where the bloody coastline is."
"I thought you said it was called Treasure Island." Georgia muttered. Hook laughed.
"That I did lass. That I did. Didn't ya hear me? It's constantly changing. Of course it's multiple names."
Carter wracked his brain.
Mysterious Island... Was it another book?
If so, Georgia had been right. Apparently no one from his world could think of anything original.
"So what are we doing here?" He asked. "I thought we were going to Wonderland?"
Smee jogged past, taking the wheel from Hook. "I'll take 'er cap'ain. It's a supply stop boyo. Can't expect food to stay fresh on a long voyage like this."
The sails collapsed, and the Jolly Roger slowed to a halt before gently running aground on the beach. Several men and women raced over and lowered a gangplank, it's end digging into the sand as an anchor slammed into the water below. One by one, pirates began to make their way onto the shore, their arms laden with crates and barrels.
Carter felt his boots sink slightly into the wet sand. He helped Felix lift a crate onto the beach and sat down, glazing at the line of jungle trees opposite the sea, their dark trunks hidden from the harsh light of the midday sun.
There was the sound of a horn in the distance, and smoke began to rise above the tree line.
"Hey iron arm!" Otto called across the beach from Carters feet. Grimacing, Hook turned around.
"What?" He growled.
Otto rubbed himself around Carters legs. "What's with the fancy smoke show?"
Hook adjusted his hat, shading his eyes from the sun.
"Well..." He muttered. "It's either the settlement, or..."
"Or what?" Otto asked.
Hook glared at the small cat. "Or it's the natives. Let's hope for the former shall we?"
Shooting one final look at Otto, Hook left to oversee the unloading of the ship.
Carter flicked his cats ear. "Stop annoying him."
"But why?" Otto purred.
"Because he's the one who can get us home!" Carter hissed. Before Otto could respond, a coconut slammed into the sand beside him, starting the animal.
"What the heck was that?" Otto yelped. There was a rustle from a nearby tree. Fiona dropped from it, her hood drawn low over her face to protect her from the shade.
"Sorry!" She called. "If it makes you feel any better, I was aiming for England!"
Carter picked the coconut up, and was about to throw it back at the girl, when her twin stepped in.
"May I?" Georgia asked, grabbing Carters arm before he could release the coconut. With a sigh, Carter tossed the fruit to his other hand and handed it to her. Georgia banged the fruit against the crate until the outer husk broke apart. Peeling away the fibres, she plunged her dagger into the coconut, and took a drink. She smiled distractedly at the smoke billowing ahead of them.
"Beats rum any day." She muttered, handing the half full coconut back to Carter.
Georgia and Fiona hacked through the dense jungle vines behind Hook and the rest of the crew. Felix was attempting to hold shut the side of his chest, which had been ripped on a branch and was beginning to lose straw.
"Found it captain!" A pirate called from the front of the group. The crew broke through the tree line, stumbling onto a bay of sand, stretching around a gigantic crystal blue lake. Cobbled together buildings and stalls sat around it, hammocks and tents hung from palm trees, and men and women bustled around going about their daily business.
Another horn sounded, and the residents all began cheering, several sprinting across the sand towards the pirates.
"What's going on?" Felix yelled over the noise. Hook turned around.
"The settlements comprised of the families of crews. Those who can make a living selling wares to sailors and see their families!" He yelled over the noise. He gestured with his hook to a small market place, and several of the crew not greeting people followed after him, Carter and the others included.
"Magic items for sale!" A man called from a tent. He sat out front of it, boxes and charms laid across a decorative rug.
"Help!" Called something from a small cage. Otto whipped around, staring at a whit rabbit in a tattered blue waistcoat. He turned on the man.
"What do you think this is?" He yelled. "Caging up animals like that's? It's barbaric! Keeping them locked up like- like caged animals... Ah."
Carter knelt down and picked Otto up. "Stop it."
"Stop it?" The cat snapped, rounding in his owner. "Don't tell me to stop it! Put me down human! I command you!"
Carter rolled his eyes. "Don't go picking fights or we'll never make it to Wonderland." He hissed.
"Wonderland?" He rabbit called. "Yes! Please, I-I must get there myself. I'm going to be terribly late. Late, late, late, late, late." He muttered to himself.
Carter crouched down. "Late for what?"
The rabbit went wide eyed. "For her majesties court! And-and if I'm not there, do you know what will happen?"
Carter shook his head. The rabbit drew his paw across his neck in a slicing motion.
"Please." It pleaded. "I can get you there I promise! Just get me out of this cage and-"
"Enough!" The man yelled, kicking the rabbits cage with his foot. "Kid, are you gonna buy anything or not?"
Carter glanced around at Georgia, Fiona and Felix, who had gathered around him. Sighing, he stood up.
"How much for the rabbit?"
