76. PTSD
"James Buchanan Barnes is now officially an Avenger and belongs to our team. His past does not define him and on our mission he truly proved that he's a fighter and helped us to defeat Hydra. With a certificate from Dr Helen Cho, it is now confirmed that Mr Barnes has full control over his mind and is therefore trustworthy. Furthermore, the mission was a success for us and the wellbeing of the whole world..."
"You did well at the press conference." I admit, looking at the tv while putting a pile of books in a box. "Even though your appearance screams too much Tony Stark."
"Maybe because I am Tony Stark." He rolls his eyes and leans back into the couch, sitting lazily and pointing at the tower of boxes. "That's why, I always hire Happy for stuff like this. Way too exhausting."
"It was your idea to move away. You're 44, not a hundred. Move your ass." I smack the back of his head, bringing the few boxes to the common room.
"Right, you're the one who's a hundred." Tony shouts after me as I leave him in the living room, rolling my eyes at his comment. After spending weeks in the hospital and at a few annoying press conferences, peace has finally arrived in our team and the discomposure eventually ceases. Bucky's image for the public isn't as bad as it used to be anymore; sure, there are still disagreements but the majority starts understanding the big picture. It is almost unrealistic to have such a peaceful time.
"Oh, Eve, hey! Look what Wanda can do!" Clint calls out to me as I walk into the common room, the archer dramatically presenting with his arms how the brunette moves the boxes with her scarlet aura. "Isn't that awesome? Less work for us!"
"Am I the only one who actually does anything?" I groan and put the boxes down. Wanda chuckles slightly while she transports the boxes to the jet. "Where are the others?"
"Nat's gone playing diplomat with Fury and the government, they don't like our new Avenger." Clint sits down and swings his feet on the table, leaning comfortably back. "And Sam is doing the grocery shopping with Vision. Oh, Scott called, by the way, he wanted to thank us for including him in the mission. Steve and Bucky are somewhere doing something."
"I know what they're doing!" Wanda shouts excitedly and I raise a brow in the air. She shortly closes her eyes, focusing on her powers. "They're training and talking about... wait, no, I can't tell."
"What do you mean?" I question and the Sokovian girl suddenly seems like she's hiding something. "Wanda, explain."
"No, I know nothing." She shakes her head and I groan at her weird behavior, Clint only frowns and doesn't even question it.
"Come on, they're my best friends. You know what? I'll just talk to them. If I'm not mistaken, they're in the gym." I shrug carelessly and go to the elevator, Wanda reacts rather panicked than pleased with my plan. Hobbling into the elevator, I only mumble. "It can't be possible that I'm the only one who's actually doing something for the move. FRIDAY, take me to the gym, please."
"Yes, Miss Farrell." The AI answers and the elevator takes me to the desired floor. Arriving there, I walk half-straight to the gym, my thigh still handicaps me, keeping me from walking properly, but it should soon be fully healed like the other scars and injuries on my body.
"I don't know if she would agree, it's not like back then- wait.." I stand still around the corner and hear Bucky's voice suddenly pausing, his words confuse me. What does he mean by that? Is he talking about me? "Did you get Wanda's message or whatever that was? Eve's on her way to us, pretend to do something."
"Like what??" Slight panic laces Steve's voice, his incapability of lying comes back. With a sarcastic smile on my lips, I enter the gym with firm steps. The two Brooklyn boys flinch sitting on the bench and turn around, feeling caught by my sudden appearance. My arms are crossed over my chest, I'm leaned against the door frame.
"Like maybe telling me what you two are doing." I suggest and tilt my head. "What's going on? And why was Wanda acting so suspicious?"
"Nothing." Bucky quickly responds with a harmless shrug, aware of Steve's awful habit to tell the truth and he gets up, surprising me with a peck on my lips. I only raise a brow in the air since I'm not used to this habit anymore, this mundane and normal kiss like from a married couple.
"Don't try to fool me, Barnes. I know you two are up to something." I warn him and Steve only shakes his head, chuckling nervously.
"Yeah: moving. Come on, let's help the others, it'll go faster then."
What are they hiding?
***
The new Avengers facility is much better than the Stark Tower. The air is refreshing and the green area is much bigger, there is even a lake close to the building which used to be one of Howard's old warehouse. No civilians or fans bother us anymore, only people we can actually trust like Helen Cho or Erik Selvig and we don't have to hide anymore. Also the training room has improved, Wanda could almost let out her full potential, due to Tony's advanced gym.
"Not gonna lie, you outdid yourself." I admit with crossed arms over my chest, leaning against the table and watching how Tony is working on the Iron Man suit. The others are already sleeping, considering it's, like, 2am. "The facility is pretty impressive. When did you even have the time to build this base?"
"After the incident with the Mandarine." He answers, tightening a screw. "You should go to sleep, popsicle, or were seventy years enough for you?"
"I'm not tired." I shrug, which is only half the truth. Firstly, I'm here because Bruce usually would be here and keep Tony company but since he's gone, I'll just do it. I sort of feel guilty for forcing him to turn into the Hulk and I also don't want Tony to feel lonely. Also, there might have been a little problem with Bucky. When we arrived here, I didn't know if we should move in together into a room, so I basically panicked and just placed my stuff in the corridor. I don't want to force him to something if he isn't ready.
"You just want to avoid your problems with Buzz Lightyear. I saw what happened in the corridor, you dropped your stuff like a lost homeless person and left him in utter confusion. Awkward." He comments and I frown.
"Buzz Lightyear?"
He looks up, giving me an eye roll. "You know, 'cause he threw his arm towards Woody in the first movie when he was pissed?"
"Oh." I only comment before going back to the topic. "I seriously need to make sure that there aren't security cameras everywhere, I bet you watch us all with popcorn. You know what? I'll get Vision to keep you company, you bloody creep, he doesn't need sleep anyway."
"Okay, hey, wait." Tony drops the screwdriver and stops me before I'm even able to take a step towards the exit. "You and Barnes need to figure it out."
"How come you care so much about it?" I want to know and sit down, my eyes narrowed.
"Sort of because I invested way too much time and energy to find Barnes just to see him struggling like this. Kind of because I wanna win a bet with Barton. It's about my honor and fifty bucks, okay?" His confession makes me roll my eyes, I should've expected that. His face suddenly grows much softer and more serious, his voice lowers. "And because I want you two to be happy."
"What? I couldn't understand you." I half grin, faking a confused face and the best frown I can give and Tony groans.
"I want you two to be happy." He repeats louder with annoyance like a child and I send him a vicious smile, enjoying how annoyed he is. "God, how could my old man like you, you're immature and annoying and intolerant."
"Says the one who is a stubborn jerk and refused to eat Mexican tomatoes." I tilt my head and he throws his arms in the air.
"They're definitely bad, you just can't taste a difference because you're an old senior citizen and come from a different century!" He takes a deep breath as if he just threw a tantrum. "Okay, but seriously, you two have waited for each other way too long, it's a damn world record. Just go back to where you were, it's easy like that."
"We were engaged. It was already hard enough to go back to the beginning and now, what, just have a wedding?" I raise a brow in the air and he nods. I almost scoff and shake my head. "Its not like I wouldn't want it but it's not easy like that, we've been through a lot and I guess he needs time. If he's not ready, then I can wait."
"Yeah, because seventy years apparently weren't enough." Tony huffs sarcastically, "God, you grandparents make it way too difficult."
"Sir, I would like to inform you about Mr Barnes' struggling. His nightmares visit him again and he's fitful." FRIDAY interrupts our conversation and an uncomfortable concern settles in my stomach, I didn't know about his nightmares, he didn't tell me anything. We only talk about mundane things, mostly the new modern world.
"Go calm him down. I can see the worried look in your eyes." He motions for me to leave. "He's had some bad nights lately. He needs you."
"Okay... You should go to sleep too though." I remind him of the time and he just carelessly nods, going back to work. Leaving his workshop, I take the elevator to go to the second floor, Bucky's room is right next to Steve's. The two boxes and my suitcase with my stuff are still in the corridor, abandoned by me because I couldn't decide wether to live alone or move into Bucky's room. A fretful murmuring comes out of his room and I get closer, my heart racing nervously.
Carefully, I open the door and walk into his room, it would be almost too dark to see anything if there wasn't the moonlight from outside. The black silhouette is moving wildly in the huge kingsize bed, the metal arm shining through the darkness and quiet words are audible. A mix of English and Russian, I guess. He's suffering.
"No... mission... her... " He mumbles before the Russian language change his words again. I take a few steps towards the bed and sit down next to him, my arm gliding down his human arm which is covered in sweat. Bucky keeps wincing and I sigh, a pain spreading through my chest. He will never recover from Hydra, not on his own.
"Bucky.... Bucky. Bucky, wake up. James." I start shaking him awake and he immediately reacts, his eyes open wide and he gets up, almost throwing his metal fist against me in self-defense. I respond by catching his punch with both hands since he's much stronger than me but I'm oddly not scared.
"E-Eve..." He quickly pulls his hand back as soon as realizes that it's just me, fear lingering in his eyes and his white tank top is completely drenched in sweat. Bucky runs a hand down his face, his palm pressed against his forehead. "I-I'm sorry, didn't sleep well... You shouldn't be here, it's not- "
" -safe? I'm not scared of you." I cut him off and he swallows, still hiding his face in shame behind his hand, his breath quick and unsteady. "Where else should I be besides with you?"
Now he lets his hand sink and glances at me with insecurity, a tear rolling down his cheek. I only crawl into his bed and sit next to him, my arms pull him into a comforting a hug and he rests his head tiredly on my collarbone, his breath calms down. I can feel his shaking, he's breaking apart and I caress his hair. I think he just needed someone to lean on. He just needed me.
"I have them too, you know." I tell him with a hollow voice, my thumb drawing circles on his hand. "The nightmares. They visit me a lot."
Bucky looks at me through the darkness, the gray-blue eyes staring into my green ones. "Maybe we can help each other."
"Maybe." I smile and he finally seems to calm down and motions for me to lay down before he pulls the blanket around us. Lying here next to him feels like home and safety, a unique warmth makes me ease. Hesitantly, he places his arm around me and pulls me to his chest, knowing that the metal arm doesn't bother me. It feels like the old times and my head slightly rises with his chest as he breathes. "Bucky?"
"Hm?"
"Do you know what we missed?" I ask, my lips forming a little smile at the peaceful moment. "The moon landing. We missed the freaking moon landing."
First, a short but dead silence follows before I hear James Buchanan Barnes genuinely chuckle for the first time again.
"You are unbelievable, Eve."
A/N- And my babies are 100% back :') This chapter was fluff hahaha
