74. Homecoming

"Hurry, Scott!" I pant, pure panic taking over my mind as I try to run as fast as possible with my injured leg. The adrenaline kicks in and I can't think clearly, my thoughts only circle around my best friend. My fist lands in an agent's face, causing a nasty crack as he stumbles back, trying to regain balance. But I ruin his chances by constantly kicking him against his gut until he falls down.

"Coming! You're just so damn fast!" He whines as he keeps changing his size to fight his way through, trying not to lose the track.

"Steve got shot! We gotta hurry and you need to show me the way." I urge him as I ram my elbow into the throat of the next soldier. The facility hadn't changed since the forties, I still slightly remember the plan of the building. My other hand is pressed against the leather belt on my thigh, trying to stop the bleeding as I force myself to keep running.

"To your right, down the corridor." Scott leads me and is now right behind me. He supports me and places my arm around his neck, together we run down the corridor. A few Hydra soldiers try to block our way but fail due to my electricity.

"Can the others help us?"

"Stark and red robot are transferring information from Hydra to FRIDAY, arrow guy and redhead fight with wingman against the army and metal arm and Maximoff are helping Captain America."

"Has anyone ever told you our actual names?" I frown at his nicknames and he chuckles nervously. We finally reach the big hall and walk straight into chaos.

As Scott reported, Clint and Natasha fight together like a dynamic duo against Hydra on the ground, sometimes arrows fly through the area, sometimes Sam flies down to give Natasha the necessary momentum when he's not too busy with clearing the air for us. My heartbeat races rapidly when I finally spot Steve in the corner with Bucky and Wanda, lying on the ground.

Relieved, I wobble towards the trio, my mouth desperately shouting Steve's name. Scott covers my back to make it possible for me to walk to them as Bucky's and Wanda's heads shoot up, reacting to my shout. The closer I get, the more my anxiety grows and I almost gasp when I see his blood. A large amount of the red liquid is growing on his stomach.

"I told you to stay in the jet!" Bucky yells at me and his hands are covered with the red color, his voice trembling.

"Steve..." I only mutter and sink to the ground, witnessing how Bucky desperately tries to stop the bleeding with his hands while Steve's head lies on Wanda's thighs, the scarlet aura lurking in front of his closed eyes.

"I'm easing his pain. Well, I'm trying." Wanda explains when she catches my puzzled glance. "The dream may distract him."

Bucky only slightly glares at me when he notices my bloody thigh, anger lacing his look. I know him. He's always mad when the people he cares about are hurt. Without thinking, I remove the leather belt and put it around Steve's stomach, his body jerking in reaction to the sudden movements.

"This should help." I tighten the belt and Bucky doesn't seem to be overly fond of my solution, yet he nonetheless helps me. "Wanda, try to use your red aura to stop the bleeding like a barrier for the blood but be careful. Natasha! Clint! Help Steve. Bucky and I will take over for you two."

"No, that's out of the question." Bucky shakes  his head wildly while the Sokovian does as I say.

"Wanda's easing Steve's pain and stopping the bleeding, she can't help on the field right now. You have a metal arm and are better in combat, I produce electricity, that's how everything works faster." I declare and already get up after squeezing Steve's cold hand tightly. His breaths are sharp and fast, his skin pale. "Don't worry, you'll be alright. I promise."

Natasha fights her way through to us and adjusts the belt, her facial expression remains neutral and without concern.

"Thought you'd never join, kiddo." Clint welcomes me as he lithely shoots three arrows at three people, arriving at the corner. "I'm slowly running out of arrows, I could use a break. We're getting him to the jet."

"I want a report on his condition every five minutes." I demand and he salutes as Bucky reluctantly stands up, his eyes hanging on to Steve for a last time. I'm just able to locate Scott by seeing how soldiers are thrown to the ground by nothing while others get shot by the falcon in the air.

Forming an electric fist, I strike out the army, charging it with enough electricity before releasing an impulse from my hand. A pressure blows my hair away while the deadly energy runs through their bodies, half of them knocked out now. Inhaling deeply, I notice how Bucky already takes care of the rest and for the first time, I see him in action as Bucky Barnes with the strength of the Winter Soldier. And I admit, it's pretty hot.

His combat has drastically improved and the way he fights is intense and rough at the same time. He appears invincible with the metal arm. Kicking the soldier in the guts, Bucky throws him over to me and I punch him down with my elbow to his face.

"I know," Bucky states with a smug grin. "I look pretty good."

"Shut up, Barnes." I only reply to his conceited confidence but secretly, I'm overly glad about his old self coming slowly back.

"Make me." He challenges me as his metal fist lands against the skull of the next attacker, knocking him out. Pressing my lips together, I do my best to suppress a smile but I fail.

"God, I'm going to vomit if I keep hearing this." Tony comments through the earpiece while I shoot a blast of electricity towards a Hydra group. A relieved sigh slips through my lips when I'm finally sure that he's alright. "Vision and I succeeded, we're preventing anyone from escaping, then we'll help you. This is the last Hydra base, let's blow it up."

"We can't just blow up a base in the Alps!" Sam objects strictly from above me, shooting through the air. "The government would be pissed at us. And people live too close to this mountain, it's too risky."

"Well, what else do you suggest, pigeon?" Stark responds with snark and I dodge a punch, driving my right knee into the agent's stomach. "I'm not gonna leave the base with the whole army in it, do you plan on fighting everyone until Christmas?"

"Watch out!" Scott suddenly drags me down and I land with an inconvenient clash on the ground. A pained groan leaves my mouth and the dizziness pounds in my head, the blood loss making just everything worse. Squinting my eyes, I try to focus and notice a bullet that is stuck in the wall, smoke erupting from the shot. Bucky suddenly snarls at the shooter as he stands protectively in front of me and Scott, the rest of the soldiers stand still and pay attention to their leader. The shot caused an intense silence.

"You guys are ruining the party."

My chest captures my breath and my eyes are widened, the mark burning more than ever. With Scott's help, I'm able to sit up and catch a glance from Crossbones. He wears his armor from the last time, his voice muffled from the mask but still powerful and heavy.

"Rumlow." Bucky clenches his teeth, decreasing the distance between us while Scott disappears into ant size.

"Crossbones." He corrects Bucky and his eyes lands on me. "But Volty here should know that, shouldn't you? Or do I have to leave another mark?"

"Stay the hell away from her or I'll snap your neck like a twig." The anger in Bucky's threat carries the cold of the Winter Soldier.

"Oh, really?" A scoff leaves Crossbones' mouth, mocking the Winter Soldier and not showing any fear. "We'll see, won't we? Желание. Ржавый."

Bucky's whole body tenses up, his hands are clenched to fists and blank horror is mirrored on his face. I immediately stand up, a groan escaping when the pain kicks in, and place my arm on Bucky's, holding onto him. He looks down at me, his face strained. We need Wanda, now. But Steve does, too.

"What are you waiting for? Kill them!" The head of Hydra commands and his army obeys, continuing the fight. Sam tries to protect us from the army, signaling me that I have to prevent the outcome of the Winter Soldier but I don't remember the words and their meaning in the right order anymore, I don't speak Russian. Why am I always useless like that? Why can't I save the people I love for once? I'm done with being helpless. I'm done with being weak.

"Bucky, listen to me, okay?" I cup his face with my hands, staring into his eyes as I also notice the beads of perspiration on his forehead. I need to be strong, I can't panic now. The last time, I couldn't stop it but this time he remembers me. We can win this, we have to. "You remember me, don't you?"

He reluctantly nods, his eyes closed as he sucks in a deep breath. Attempting to blend out the war noises, Bucky focuses on my voice. "I do."

"Семнадцать. Рассвет."

"Who am I?" I ask louder when Bucky clenches his teeth, mentally fighting against the Winter Soldier. His breaths are sharp and come quicker, he barely moves a muscle. "Tell me who I am."

"Eve. You're- you're Evelyn Farrell." His voice lowers, the words squeezing through his clenched teeth. My hands travel to his ears, covering them as much as possible while I lean with my head closer towards him. A glimpse of Hydra's marionette shines through, making Bucky punch his metal fist with an inhuman force into the ground. For a moment, I'm scared that I failed, I'm terrified that I let him down. "... My canary."

"Печь. Девять."

"That's right. I'm yours." A sad smile graces my lips and I press my lips together when he can't hold back his cry anymore, the reaction of the words slowly seep into his mind. He lets go of me and sinks to the ground, his tortured scream echoing through the battle. Stay strong, stay strong. He needs you. Try to remember the words, remember what they mean to cure him. Remember!

"Добросердечный. Возвращение на Родину."

Homecoming. My eyes widen when Crossbones' last words pangs through my head, my mind clicking when the memories of the trigger words finally come back and the pressure vanishes into thin air. The last word, the longest word. It means Homecoming. I remember. I can help. Pulling Bucky up, my hands remain on his cheeks, forcing him to look at me.

Crossbones gets interrupted by one of Sam's missiles which finally gives me a chance to break the soldier. Meanwhile, Bucky is trembling with fear and still mentally fights against himself, his eyes squinted. He was lost, he'd been lost for such a long time, almost a century. He didn't have a home, he had nothing, not even himself. But now he does.

"Look at me." I demand, his eyes open wide and starring strained at me. "It's me, Eve. You're back, James Barnes. You don't have to return anymore, you already have. We're not on the train. We're home. You are home."

Without hesitation, I pull him into a kiss, his lips crashing against mine. His body is still tense, the shock overwhelming him but I don't care and can't help but feel a rising sensation when I lean closer towards him, decreasing the distance between us. James' lips are soft, yet cool like the Russian Winter and I notice how he slowly starts yielding to my kiss, his hands trailing down my back. The cold metal of his arm gives me goosebumps as we melt together to one, sharing a single heartbeat.

Pulling back, I slowly and almost anxiously open my eyes but my lips form a glad smile when they meet his smirk. Still slightly panting, Bucky's forehead is against mine. "I'm here. And I won't leave, canary."

We don't have time to enjoy the moment longer though when we hear a loud noise, turning around and seeing Sam on the ground, electrified by an arrow. Crossbones spits blood to the ground and his glare shoots daggers.

"Sam!" I yell his name and wobble towards him, checking on his well being. Bucky glares at Crossbones while I protect Sam from the agents, creating an electricity.

"Один." The word doesn't effect Bucky, instead he stands up and walks straight towards Crossbones with his hand formed to a fist. Rage grows beneath our enemy's armor, his voice turning into a yell. "Грузовой вагон! Why doesn't it work anymore?! Грузовой вагон!!"

"I'm not your puppet anymore." He snarls at him, his words are dangerously calm and Bucky rips off the thick mask. His metal arm meets Crossbones' burnt face with a furious strength before he grabs Crossbones by the collar. "I'm James Barnes."

A relieved pride spreads through my chest, yet I focus on defending Sam and me from the soldiers. Suddenly, an agent gets thrown to the ground by nothing, another follows him and I frown. My heart almost jumps out of my chest when Scott returns, growing back to his normal size. "Where have you been? We needed help!"

"I had to find out where the water pipes are, I've got a plan on how to defeat everyone without endangering anyone." He explains, punching a soldier in the face. "We get the base under water, then you'll electrify the water. That requires us being out of the building first, obviously."

"Scott, you're a genius! Tony, did you copy?"

"No, I'm still offended that you didn't ask me for help first." The billionaire answers on comm. "Vision will be helping you to release the water, Ant. I'm coming, Eve, hold on."

"Alright, Scott, take Sam with you." I nod and Scott sighs.

"This will be tough, he looks pretty heavy with his wings. And I'm not that strong." He whines before putting on his helmet. "It's your turn, guys. Attack."

Sam's breaths sharpen and he slightly groans while I look up with hope in my eyes. Slowly, the wound in my thigh starts becoming a problem. "You have backup?"

"I have ants." Scott smirks and suddenly, a swarm of ants fly into the building, attacking the soldiers and I stare with widened eyes at Scott. I had no idea that Ant-Man would have such a literal meaning. "Usually, ants don't come out in the cold but Pym helped me to prepare them for the weather. Now, guys, carry wingman out. Good luck, Voltricity."

The ants obey, carrying Sam away and I'm just too shocked to decide whether to be disgusted or impressed. Standing up, I see how Iron Man finally flies into the hall while Scott and Sam leave, the ants still attacking the screaming soldiers.

"Why am I even here?" Tony groans at the sight of everything as he prepares to land. "Everything okay- Eve!"

Before I'm able to question him, I suddenly feel a cool weight pressed against the back of my head, a click telling me that the gun is about to fire any second.

"One wrong move and this bullet will be stuck in your head."

A/N- I know, I'm the worst haha.
