62. New Avengers

"Stark, you worry about bringing the city back down safely. The rest of us have one job: tear these things apart. You get hurt, hurt 'em back. You get killed, walk it off." Steve gives orders on the comm to everyone, panting in between his words.

"There's a Vibranium core under the rock, the magnetic field keeps it together." T'Challa explains, the smooth and clear sound of his claws resounds in the background.

"Destroying the core would stop it from flying away." Tony deduces logically. "If it drops though, the impact would kill thousands but once it gets high enough: global extinction."

"Shit." I swear under a heavy breath as we fly farther and farther away. How are we supposed to save the people on the ground and on this flying city? Apart from that, there's still Ultron and his army. We are screwed, I don't even know how we should save ourselves.

Catching the panic scream of a woman, I turn around and my eyes widen at the car that wobbles between the depth and the breaking bridge. I don't hesitate to run towards the car, grabbing the back of it and using my full strength to pull it to the bridge. The pain of every single nerve in my arms hits me and I clench my teeth, my muscles are on fire. I start shaking as my strength already decreases, growing tired and weak but my grip tightens.

"No, no, no, I'm not gonna let you fall! I got you!" I try to calm her down between clenched teeth when I notice her anxious look. My feet almost slip away, losing the balance and the metal beam I'm holding onto is about to break apart. Blank panic lets my heart skip a beat, my hands become sweaty. "Guys, I need help!"

In the next moment, Thor comes flying from beneath, quickly grabbing the woman and landing on the street to let her down. Her scream falls silent and I finally let go of the car, sinking tiredly to the ground as my muscles become sore and I lose my strength. I pant heavily and beads of sweat coat my forehead.

"Are you alright?" Thor places a hand on my shoulder and I nod reluctantly, steadying my breath.

"I- I'm just not as strong as Steve." I mutter and hold onto his arm to get up. Noticing the swarm of robots flying towards us, I look at the hammer. "Ready for an electrical collision?"

"Thought you'd never ask." He smirks and summons a growling thunder as I gain electricity in my hands, the sibilance becomes louder and louder. I shoot the voltage at his thunder and the encounter turns into an electrifying collision, killing off hundreds of robots. It rains destroyed pieces of metal and the area is empty, all civilians have left.

"We're clear here."

"Thor." Ultron appears and annoyance runs through his robotic voice. He flies towards us and grabs the God of thunder by his neck, getting away with him. "You're bothering me."

"Thor!" I shout and shoot a blast of energy at Ultron but they escape. Groaning, I run to another borough to help while I speak through the earpiece to the only one who could possibly stop Ultron. "Vision, Ultron's got Thor."

"Do not worry, Miss Farrell. I will take care of this." He assures me as I run straight into the chaos of killer bots, dismantling each of them with my bare hands or electrifying them. The eye-catching silver hair stands in my sight and the boy leans tiredly against a wall, fear lurking in his blue eyes.

"Pietro!" I walk over there and a robot is in my way, trying to shoot at me. Before it has the chance to fire, I throw my first against his metal skull, leading it to fly away. My knuckles slightly hurt but I ignore the pain and keep fighting my way through to the Sokovian. "Is everything okay?"

"Nothing is okay." He mumbles, sounding completely lost and drowning in panic. "What did we get into? My sister is not safe... I did wrong, I-I can't save the people..."

Pulling him towards the corner of the alley to leave the battle field, I give him a piercing glance. "Okay, look, I know you're scared. I'm scared too, but who cares? You don't have to be fearless to be a hero, it's about how far you go despite the fear. And it's our job to save these people because we're their only hope. You can find your sister and be safe or you can stand up and fight as an Avenger. You choose what you will do with your abilities. It's up to you."

Pietro only speechlessly stares at me, struggling with my words but the fear has shrunk. I go back to the fight after taking a deep breath and looking at the lost orphan. "I will fight, that's my choice."

Running back into the chaos, I shoot every Iron Legion that threatens me down before I motion the civilians to gather at the center. It shouldn't end as deadly as the incident in New York. "Black Panther and Widow are there to help you, try to be careful! Guys, we're coming to you."

After letting the team know about our arrival, I help an old woman to move out of the dangerous zone, followed by the crowd of locals. Another group of robots is about to attack us and I immediately shield the woman with my body, expecting a shot. Instead, the robots are dismantled within the blink of an eye by a familiar blue path that forms a body when it has stopped.

"I made a choice." Pietro declares determinedly and I send him a proud grin, then we help the civilians together. The city looks completely different, it is only made of broken fragments and ash now. The homes are destroyed and hollow.

Fighting our way through the smoke and dust, Pietro and I arrive at the center where many survivors are gathered together in a remaining building, panic and fear still plaguing their minds. I find Steve outside with a view on the blue sky, appearing similar to the view from an airplane. He seems tired and the silence falls slowly.

"The next wave's gonna hit any minute. What have you got, Stark?" Steve's voice is heavy and deep, without hope and only with determination.

"Well, nothing great. Maybe a way to blow up the city. That'll keep it from impacting the surface if you guys can get clear." Tony sighs and I glance outraged at Steve about this plan. He remains calm though, as if he already expected that.

"Tony, there are thousands of people, we don't have any means of transport. And I won't escape without them just because I have the chance." I state and I can tell from his voice that he's not content either.

"Impact radius is getting bigger every second. We're going to have to make a choice."

"That's not fair, it's their lives against the lives of the people down there!" My voice rises with discomposure and Tony groans.

"I know that already! Doesn't matter how we'll decide, you gotta get down if you wanna save Barnes."

My chest tightens and I am left with bewilderment. I don't know how to answer that, it'd be selfish to leave the team for Bucky. But he doesn't have anyone else but Steve and me. Helplessly, I look at Steve for a reaction.

"I'm not leaving this rock with one civilian on it." He declares stubbornly and I bite on my lower lip, my eyes attached to the sky.

"That won't be necessary." Fury's sudden voice on comm makes me frown until the wind grows stronger, my hair flies in every possible direction. A helicarrier shows up right in front of us and a relieved laugh escapes from my lips. "Nice, right? I pulled her out of mothballs with a couple of old friends. She's dusty, but she'll do."

"And I thought you started to grow on liking the fake death." I greet him through the earpiece, utterly glad about the solution.

"Well, it was about damn time to move my ass." Fury responds.

"Fury, you son of a bitch." Steve mumbles with almost a smirk and I laugh at his language.

"Oooh! You kiss your mother with that mouth?" The director asks playfully and lifeboats fly towards us, enough lifeboats to save everyone. Pietro joins us outside, an amazed expression on his face.

"This is SHIELD?"

"This is what SHIELD's supposed to be." Steve smiles proudly and I think of Howard and Peggy.

"That's what SHIELD stands for." I glance at Pietro, a little smile gracing my lips. "Saving people who can't save themselves."

"This is not so bad." Pietro smirks and Steve gives T'Challa and Natasha a sign to get the people out of the building.

"Let's load 'em up!"

Clint, Natasha and T'Challa help us to get the people on the lifeboats as we also look out for others that may have been left or forgotten. No one will stay on this rock, not when we're here. After getting most people to safety, Tony suddenly pipes up with enthusiasm. "I got it! Create a heat seal. I could...", a fired shot interrupts him, "I could supercharge the spire from below. Thor, Farrell, I got a plan."

"Occupied right now!" Thor pants through the earpiece with fight sounds in the background.

"I'm coming, let me do this!" I answer and start running to the core against the stream of people.

"Rhodey, get the rest of the people on board that carrier. Avengers, time to work for a living." Tony announces and the rest of the team follows me, soon arriving at what's left of the church and the Vibranium core.

"You good?" Pietro asks his sister worriedly as I stand by their side, seeing how Vision elegantly lands on the ground.

"Yeah." She nods and I notice how much her strength has grown, Wanda doesn't seem to be as scared as before anymore. The Hulk and Thor land next to me with a loud crash which I'm used to now, both are mighty and huge.

Tony flies down to us and points at the core as we gather around it. "This is the drill. If Ultron gets a hand on the core, we lose."

Listening to the cue, Ultron finally appears in front of us, sending a glare. Thor's temper rises and he glances challenging at the enemy by himself. "Is that the best you can do?!"

Ultron then summons his army of robots to join him with a quiet and simple hand gesture, my eyes widen at the next wave of Iron Legions. My strength is already at a low point and my muscles feel like lead, barely able to move.

"You had to ask." Steve tiredly judges Thor with an annoyed glare, being as done with fighting as me.

"This is the best I can do. This is exactly what I wanted. All of you, against all of me. How could you possibly hope to stop me?"

"Well, like my old friends said. Together." Tony glances at Steve and me before the fight starts with the Hulk's furious roar. The Avengers fight with their abilities or weapons, protecting the core at all costs from Ultron's army. A mixture of beams, strength, electricity, a shield, bows, bullets, claws, a red and a blue aura fill the place, naturally fitting together like a team.

Eventually, Tony, Thor, Vision and the Hulk take care of Ultron as the rest of us continue to fight against the robots. Ultron escapes, the green monster is close on his track. Noticing that their leader is on the verge of losing, the bots start to retreat in fear, considering they would feel such an emotion.

"They'll try to leave the city." Thor warns us and flies off with the artificial intelligence. "I'll look for Ultron. Vision, follow me."

"We can't let 'em, not even one. I'll stop them. Rhodey!" Tony calls for support and looks at me before leaving. "I'll give you a mark to hit the core with electricity, it'll destroy the core and the floating city. You'd be falling but I'm gonna pick you up, don't worry about that, alright?"

"I'll be waiting for you." I nod, then he flies off.

"We gotta move out. Even I can tell the air is getting thin. You guys get to the boats, I'll sweep for stragglers, be right behind you." Steve tells the team, looking at T'Challa. "Especially you, your highness. Wakanda can't lose their king."

"What about the core?" Clint asks and T'Challa nods wisely at Steve's order.

"I'll protect it." Wanda volunteers and shares a glance with the archer. "It's my job."

"I'm staying here with Wanda since I'll have to destroy the core later anyway." I join her and Natasha, Clint and T'Challa leave already, only Steve and Pietro are still here.

"I hate to leave you behind." Steve sighs, concern laces his voice and I give him an encouraging smile.

"I'll come back. I swear on newspaper and stolen apples."

He looks less worried now, even manages to smile slightly at my promise. He leaves a quick kiss on my forehead before running off to make sure nobody is in danger. Pietro still hesitates though, worrying about his sister.

"Get the people on the boats."

"I'm not going to leave you here." He states stubbornly.

"I can handle this." In exactly this moment, she blasts off an approaching robot as I shoot an electric blast at it at the same time. "Besides, I'm not alone. Come back for me when everyone else is off, not before."

"Hmm." Pietro only hums carelessly with a hint of sarcasm and is about to leave.

"You understand?" His twin sister stops him and he turns around with a smirk.

"You know, I'm twelve minutes older than you." He reminds her teasingly and I almost smile at their sibling bonding, glad that they've always had each other.

"Go." Wanda chuckles and it's the first time that I see her that comfortable and loose.

"I'll make sure that she'll be safe and sound." I promise him to ease his concern. A genuine smile appears on his lips before he vanishes.

"You be safe too, Eve."

A/N- Summer holidays mean I'm bored af mean I have time, much time to write haha 😂 I hope you enjoy the relationship between Eve and the Maximoff twins because I certainly do!
