60. The Vision

The train would have crushed me to death like some little ant if it weren't for Pietro who saves my ass by carrying me onto the train. Arriving there, he carelessly drops me and I groan, still breathing heavily. I don't have the chance to yell at him though because Koreans stare at me with horror and panic. Forcing a smile, I greet them awkwardly with a waved hand, "Hey."

"Ultron escaped! How do we stop the train?!" Steve's shout through the squeaking makes me get up and I approach him, T'Challa, Wanda and Pietro together. The train still races with an incredible speed and beyond control through the city, not slowing down any sooner. He glances at the speedster, shooting him an urgent look. "Civilians in our path."

Pietro understands and nods before he speeds off. My eyes land immediately on Wanda as I remember her abilities. "Can you stop the train?"

"I-I don't know." She splutters with insecurity in her voice and my hands land on her shoulders while I give her an intensive stare. The self-consciousness reminds me of my own when I first received my powers. Nobody could teach me how to use them because no one had similar abilities. But she's got me.

"I know it's something you're not used to, but we really don't have the time now to be insecure. Your brother is out there to save civilians, do the same! You want to make it up, don't you?" I try to talk to her and she first glances to the ground, processing my words. Then she nods eagerly and turns around, creating the scarlet aura in her hands.

I tense up at the familiar red color and suddenly feel how a hand is placed on my shoulder to pull me further back. First, I think it's Steve until I turn around and realize that it's T'Challa who has prevented that I get hit by fragments which fly towards us. Steve uses his shield to protect the people while Wanda stops the train by using her powers.

The speed finally slows down until the wagon stands still, half buried in the concrete ground. The wind and the panicky screams finally decease and a thick smoke spreads through the air, causing everyone to cough and feel an awful scratch in their throat. My feet are still prickling and I walk trembling out of the train, adjusting to the steady ground beneath me. The civilians leave as fast as possible and are welcomed by safety and finally peace.

"I'm fine." Pietro breathes out when his sister looks worriedly at him. His voice is dry as he's still gasping for air. "I just need to take a minute."

"What are we gonna do about the Cradle?" Wanda asks us with concern in her voice.

"Stark and I will take care of it. Then we will try to get the Vibranium back, it should not be in Ultron's hand nor out of Wakanda." T'Challa's answer doesn't seem to satisfy the Sokovian girl, in fact, her face turns terrified as if it'd be a big mistake.

"No, he won't." She shakes her head and Steve lets out a deep sigh.

"You don't know what you're talking about, Stark's not crazy." He defends our friend and I nod agreeing, then I glance at Pietro to find out if he's with her. But the speedster only appears conflicted with himself.

"He will do anything to make things right. Ultron can't tell the difference between saving the world and destroying it. Where do you think he gets that?" Wanda emphasizes the meaning of her words and I press my lips to a thin line together. She's right about that, Tony would risk anything to save everyone, including building artificial intelligence or even risking his own life. He mostly ignores the methods he uses to make everything right, as long as the result is ultimate safety which is why Ultron ended up as a killer robot. He couldn't interpret it.

"Maybe he will." Her brother pipes up, feeling less hatred for Tony than she does. My conversation with him seemed to have an effect on his point of view. "We'll see."

"Nobody's on comm." Steve lets me know and I frown, not wanting to suspect Tony but he actually should be able to answer. Unwanted doubts start clouding my judgement.

"Do you trust your friend?" T'Challa asks us severely, his eyes slightly narrowing beneath the cat mask. "Or is he only an ally?"

"The genetic coding tower's at ninety-seven percent. You have got to upload that schematic in the next three minutes." Bruce' voice echoes through the destroyed corridor of the Avengers Tower as we are on our way to the lab. I don't like the sound of his scientific talk, not at all. It sounds awfully familiar with our suspicion.

Entering the lab, Wanda, Pietro, T'Challa, Steve and I witness how Tony and Bruce are working and experimenting on the synthetic body in the lab, dozens of wires are connected to the Cradle. Taking a deep breath, I try not to freak out. "Don't tell me you're creating another killer robot."

Bruce looks up from the Cradle, only now noticing our presence and guilt is reflected in his dark eyes. Tony only shrugs, continuing his work on the computer. "Okay, I won't. It's not gonna kill us though, only Ultron."

"You can't be serious!" I groan and Pietro tilts his head, shooting me a Told you look. As a response, I only roll my eyes. T'Challa removes his mask and glances unpleasantly at them while Steve takes a step forward, his blue eyes glaring.

"I'm gonna say this once."

"How about 'nonce'?" Tony responds childishly and I roll my eyes again, mentally questioning why I even defended this idiot.

"This is how mistakes repeat and it'll be the final end if you two plan to waste this Vibranium. You don't know what the gem can do, so I will only warn you once: Stop it before I have no other choice but to take necessary measures." T'Challa's deep voice sound like a threat

"Shut it down!" Steve commands angrily.

"Nope, not gonna happen." Tony walks towards me and simply ignores Steve, his eyes are locked with mine. "JARVIS wasn't dead, he was the one who constantly changed the codes. We plan to put him into the body, so he'll be on our side to fight Ultron. I need you to trust me once, just this one time. Ultron's my fault. I'm trying to prevent more deaths that already happened through my hands."

"You're asking for a hella lot, Tony." I murmur, trying not glare at him while a heated discussion arises between the others. But I know that he's not stupid enough to repeat his mistake and all he asks for is trust. "Fine, I trust you. Don't make me regret it."

Suddenly, all wires are cut off within a second and we turn around, watching how Pietro has removed them and destroyed the lab equipment. A constant bleep now alerts the scientists about the dropping data of the Cradle, leading to a slow failure of the synthetic body. "No, no. Go on. You were saying?"

"Seriously, Pietro?" I groan and Steve narrows his eyes at me, staring in disbelief.

"Are you on their side now??"

"I'm on nobody's side, I just want a plan that's gonna stop Ultron which happens to be his plan." I sigh tiredly and the sound of a bullet catches our attention as we see how the glass beneath Pietro's feet shatters into pieces, making him fall through to the lower floor.

"Pietro!" Wanda shouts but Bruce holds her back before she can even use her abilities.

Tony tries to save the body and works on the computer but Steve's shield flies through the room, leaving the equipment useless and damaged. The billionaire groans with annoyance and gives me an urgent glance as he puts on his Iron Man gauntlets and shoots Steve down. "Farrell, charge the Cradle!"

Except for the fact that I hate how he starts fighting with Steve now, I do nonetheless what he said, igniting the electricity in my hands to power the Cradle. But before I can even do anything, T'Challa suddenly attacks me and I'm pulled down to the ground while everything escalates quickly.

"I'm sorry, Miss Farrell, but I cannot let this happen. Neither to my country nor to the world."

"And I can't let the only opportunity to save the world slip out of my hands, your highness." I deeply hope that Tony's plan is gonna work because I don't intend to land in prison or get executed for attacking a King.

Using my full strength, I try to shove him off me, but he's oddly strong, much stronger than I expected. Only after I've thrown my knee against his stomach, he finally gets off of me but continues trying to hold me back, throwing me easily to the ground again. I groan and pull a pained expression, squinting my eyes, "What the hell?"

In the next moment, Thor all of sudden enters the lab, coming out of nowhere. Everyone stares at his sudden appearance and the fights pause, frozen in shock at how the demigod pounds the Cradle with his hammer. T'Challa and I get reluctantly up.

"Wait!" Bruce yells but nobody stops Thor, nobody is able to.

The bright light of the powerful bolt of lightning blinds us as the energy flows into the Cradle. I try to overcome the brightness to figure out what is he doing, electricity wouldn't exactly kill it off. Thor's power decreases and a silence follows, all eyes prying on the Cradle. My heart thumps so loud that I fear everyone could hear it but in the next moment, the body breaks out with an immense force, throwing us all to the ground.

I ignore the pain in my back, too much in shock to stay on the ground and stand up again. Wanda is the only one who wasn't thrown off, her eyes are attached to the red, masculine body on the Cradle. A haze coats him and the yellow mind stone on his forehead still glows lightly. The human robot stands up as his robotic eyes wander around the room until they meet Thor.

Suddenly he attempts to attack the demigod but the blonde grabs him and tosses him through the glass pane to the common room where the robot stops right in front of the view of Manhattan, hovering in the air and looking at the city. We all gather there, Clint and Natasha joining us, and Thor motions us not to do anything and wait.

"I'm sorry, that was... odd." The robot glances at Thor and my eyes widen. He had JARVIS' voice. "Thank you."

"Thor, you helped create this?" Steve questions carefully.

"I've had a vision. A whirlpool that sucks in all hope of life and at its center is that." Thor points at the gem inside the robot's head. Is it still JARVIS though? I notice Tony's analyzing glance, hoping to find his old friend in the body.

"What, the gem?" Bruce frowns.

"It's the Mind Stone. It's one of the six Infinity Stones, the greatest power in the universe, unparalleled in its destructive capabilities." The god explains and I suck in a breath. As if the earth hasn't had enough problems, there are more of those stones in the universe.

Steve lifts a brow in the air. "Then why would you bring it to... "

"Because Stark is right." Thor confirms and sarcasm runs through Bruce' voice.

"Oh, it's definitely the end times."

"The Avengers cannot defeat Ultron." Thor ignores Bruce' comment and the robot looks up. I still don't trust him, what if he's an even smarter version of Ultron and only pretends to be on our side?

"Not alone." He adds.

"You sound like JARVIS." I receive the gaze of the red robot as he creates a cape like Thor out of nothing, only molecules. "Are you? Or are you a child of Ultron?"

"I'm not Ultron. I'm not JARVIS. I am..." He pauses, thinking,  "I am."

Maybe we can call him Vision. Wanda now steps forward, her eyes still in trance of the new creation of Tony and her voice is uncharacteristically strong. "I looked in your head and saw annihilation."

"Look again."

"Yeah. Her seal of approval means jack to me." Clint pipes up with mistrust, scoffing.

Meanwhile Thor is still fully convinced of the Vision. "Their powers, the horrors in our heads, Ultron himself, they all came from the Mind Stone, and they're nothing compared to what it can unleash. But with it on our side..."

"Is it?" Steve questions and glances at Vision. "Are you? On our side?"

"I don't think it's that simple." Vision admits and Clint groans.

"Well, it better get real simple real soon."

"Don't rush him." I nudge the archer. "He was born like a minute ago, give him time to learn how to look at things first."

Vision shoots me an almost friendly look, well, as friendly as a robot can get. "I am on the side of life. Ultron isn't, he will end it all."

"What's he waiting for?" Tony finally speaks up, he has remained silent the whole time which has almost worried me. Maybe he was scared that he has fully lost JARVIS.

"You."

"Where?" Bruce demands to know, concerned about the killer robot who wants to kill his best friend.

"Sokovia." Natasha answers with crosses arms over her chest. "Clint and I could hack into Ultron's jet and locate it."

"If we're wrong about you, if you're the monster that Ultron made you to be..." Bruce mutters displeasingly.

"What will you do?" Vision then realizes that the silence means we would be forced to destroy him, yet he remains calm. "I don't want to kill Ultron. He's unique, and he's in pain. But that pain will roll over the earth, so he must be destroyed. Every form he's built, every trace of his presence on the net, we have to act now. And not one of us can do it without the others. Maybe I am a monster. I don't think I'd know if I were one. I'm not what you are, and not what you intended. So there may be no way to make you trust me. But we need to go."

Our eyes widen when Vision simply lifts the divine hammer and hands it to Thor before he walks off. It is so quiet that we could have heard a pin drop and Thor's facial expression cannot be described with words, blank shock is written on his face.

"Well", T'Challa breaks the silence with a shrug. "I trust him now."
