49. Back from the Death

"Why do I have to sit with the Nazi in the backseat? That's not fair at all!" I complain groaning about my seat next to Jasper Sitwell who shoots me a rather indignant look. During our whole ride to the Triskelion, I've kept distance to the officer and preferred to look through the window at the highway. "If you deny that you're a Nazi now, I'll lose my patience to control my powers for good."

A chuckle escapes Sam's lips as Steve sighs tiredly. "Insight's launching in sixteen hours. We'll use him to bypass the DNA scans and access the Helicarriers directly."

"What?! Are you crazy?? That is a terrible, terrible idea." Sitwell disagrees and suddenly, a loud noise comes from the car roof and a hand smashes the window to grab Sitwell and throw him into the oncoming traffic. My eyes widen at the death of Jasper Sitwell and I'm forced to cover my eyes with my arms, protecting myself from the rain of broken glasses. My heart almost jumps out of my chest and I gasp in shock, trying not to scream.

"Eve!" Steve shouts my name and pulls me on his lap to the passenger seat when bullets pierce their way through the roof into the backseat. Who the hell is attacking us?! I clench my teeth and hold onto Steve, pulling my legs closer, so Sam can pull on the broken handle.

The assassin from the car roof lands, through the sudden stop, elegantly on the street and I stare at the soldier. His brown long hair is messy, covering his face with the mask and goggles but what actually catches my attention is the metal arm, designed with the red star. The Winter Soldier.

For a second, only a short moment, I'm taken aback by his appearance and an indescribable emptiness is left in my chest for unknown reasons. His deadly dangerous atmosphere makes me speechless.

Another car smashes into ours from behind, clearly Hydra's car, and pushes us along as my waist painfully meets the car dashboard. All of a sudden, the Winter Soldier jumps back onto our car and smashes without hesitation the windscreen to pull out the steering wheel.

"Shit!" Sam swears as the car starts swaying from the road and I shoot blasts of electricity at the Winter Soldier but he already jumps onto the vehicle behind us.

"Hang on!" Steve yells and breaks open the door, the strong wind enters the car with a loud rush. Knowing his plan, I grab Sam and the three of us hold onto each other, flying out of the car and sliding on the car door through the streets. The jar is deafening and Sam rolls roughly away, immediately standing up like soldiers always do while Steve and I remain on the car door. My whole body hurts from the harsh landing but I force myself to stand up.

Hydra's car stops right in front of us and the Winter Soldier steps out with his team. I notice how we hold up the traffic and put the life of others in danger, so I shoot a beam into the air, giving them a warning. The assassin aims a rifle at us, pulling the trigger and Steve shoves me aside, using his shield. The missile explodes and throws Steve off the bridge, leaving a toxic and blinding smoke.

"Steve!" I scream and want to check on him but the Winter Soldier doesn't waste another second to shoot at me. I dodge and hide behind the cars as a storm of bullets comes. Sam is a few meters away from me, protecting himself as well. Trying to catch my breath, I feel how the adrenaline kicks in and create electricity in my hands. "Okay, now I'm pissed."

I knock out a part of the Hydra team with my powers and run towards the Winter Soldier, planning to attack him. But the next missile flies towards me and instead of running away, I shoot a blast of electricity at it, causing a massive explosion. The pressure throws us both away and my head hits harshly the ground. Groaning in pain, I feel a warm liquid running down my forehead and carefully touch the wound. Blood is on my fingers and the dizziness spreads through my mind.

Standing up, I run unsteadily towards the two-way road and jump over the barrier. The soldier is on his feet already, only a crack in his goggles was caused by the explosion. He sends another missile my way and my eyes widen, forcing me to jump off the bridge as a car flies over me and lands on the ground with a loud crash.

I cry in pain when my left arm hits the ground, followed by my body. An aching pounding spreads through the bone structure of my left arm, a single move already causes a pained noise to escape my lips. With the support of my right arm, I manage to stand up and start running to the other side of the street under the bridge, even though my lungs burn and the blood on my wounds keep bleeding.

I'm aware that the Hydra soldier is looking out for Steve on the other side, that's my advantage. Recognizing his shadow, I don't hesitate to attack him with my powers from beneath, successfully hitting his goggles. He falls back and I keep running, feeling how my strength slowly weakens.

"Steve- " I want to call him while I'm near the bus that got involved in the fight, but suddenly dozens of bullets fly through the air, aimed at me and I instinctually escape the deadly rain of munition. Civilians scream and panic, running around without thinking. "Everyone, run now!!!"

I hide behind an empty car and clench my teeth while my hand presses tightly against my left arm. The pain is unbearable and I'm shaking and panting, trying to find a solution. What if..., I consider an idea and produce electricity through my left arm, hoping that it will heal. A prickling fills my assumedly broken arm and the pain becomes slightly less bad, it's still there but it's dialed down enough for me to fight.

Taking out Sam's phone, I take a recording as a distraction for when the soldier arrives. "Civilians in danger. Current location, twenty-three hundredth street at Virginia Avenue. Please send help." Then I press the repeat button- Clint taught me how to do it- and hide behind another car, leaving my phone behind the first.

As expected, the Winter Soldier appears with his rifle and my racing heart almost crashes through my rib cage, a slight fear creeps under my skin, making me hold my breath. The streets are now empty, it's just the two of us. A deadly game. Hopefully, Sam is helping Steve right now. The soldier hears the recording and rolls a grenade towards the car, shooting at it which leads to an explosion and fire. I use this moment and attack him from behind, tackling him to the ground.

The gun falls out of his hand and he groans underneath his mask which covers his mouth, but his goggles are gone. I'm about to hit him with a blast of electricity as I hold him down but then his blue eyes meet mine and I hesitate for a moment. Those eyes. He reacts suddenly incredibly furious at my powers, as if the electricity would trigger him, and uses his metal arm to throw me aggressively against the car.

I groan with pain and can't afford a break because the Winter Soldier punches his metal arm into the car, leaving a dent. He would've hit my face if I didn't dodge. Gasping, I run away while I keep shooting electric beams at him, striking his metal arm which stops him for a moment. Trying to catch my breath, I keep running and warning everyone. The pain numbs my arm and the wound on my forehead weakens my ability to think, making me dizzy and stealing my strength.

"Eve!" Someone suddenly drags me behind a car and I almost attack him but then a sigh of relief leaves my lips. Sam. He's luckily barely injured. "God, you look horrible. Take off your jacket. C'mon."

I do as he says but struggle because of every single move that is necessary for that. He helps me and his eyes widen at the blue bruised and blood covered arm. Sitting down, I force an understating smile. "Doesn't look as bad as it is, right?"

"Are you kidding me? Your arm's partially fractured. How could you even fight??" He takes his leather jacket to bandage my arm and I scrunch up my face, pressing my lips together. Sweat covers body and my breath is still heavy, my hair adheres to my skin.

"I- I used my electricity on my arm... the electric energy could slightly heal it but not enough to win this fight... also, super-soldier serum..." I explain between hasty breaths.

"Damn, if it wasn't so bad, I'd be impressed right now. Bummer that it only works on you because your method would burn other people's skin." He admits with respect and gets up. "Steve is fighting against the soldier right now, I'll help him and get the Falcon suit. You stay here, alright?"

"No." I shake my head and the car supports my back, helping me to get up. Then I create electricity and use it once again on my arm. "I'm gonna help Steve, that's how we provide you more time to get the suit."

"Are you crazy?!"

"Maybe." I shrug and look back to the street where Steve and the Winter Soldier fight against each other. "Get your suit, I'll help Steve and we distract the Winter Soldier until you're able to attack him, alright?"

Steve's shield is stuck in a car and he's not able to get it, the soldier tries to stab him with his knife. Stay strong, keep going, I force myself to run and get the shield while the two are distracted and Sam does as I say. "Steve!"

He hears his name and catches the shield that I pass to him, protecting himself against the knife. The soldier suddenly throws the knife at me as he lunges at me. I dodge his weapon and metal arm by sliding down on the ground, then kicking him from behind. Getting up, I produce electricity in my right fist and aim for his face but he catches my blow with his metal arm, not effected by the voltage.

His metal hand gets a hold of my fist and I press my lips together, trying to fight against it but my hand hurts from his incredible strength and I hold back a pained noise. Steve throws his shield at the assassin's metal arm, making him let go of me and step backwards. My knuckles hurt like hell, feeling slightly crushed and I move every single muscle to continue fighting. I shoot him down with my abilities without hesitation but he quickly stands up again. He's an insanely good fighter, I gotta admit that.

Then Steve attacks him with a kick in his stomach, throwing him against the car but he takes out another knife. Before the Winter Soldier can use it, I pick up Steve's shield and throw it at him, indirectly passing it to Steve and knocking the assassin down at the same time. Steve catches it and punches the soldier in the face with the shield, throwing him back. The soldier rolls away and his mask finally drops, he immediately stands up and turns around.

And then I see the true face of the Winter Soldier. I see him. My eyes widen and my chest captures my breath, leaving an empty silence. Like the world, I stand still, paralyzed by the engrained shock. This is not real. This can't be real. It must be a dream, it's only a horrible nightmare, it must be. But why do I still feel the blood on my forehead? The pain in my left arm. The quiet wind that lashes my face. The dog tag around my neck. Those eyes, I should have recognized those eyes. The memorable blue eyes of Bucky Barnes.

"Bucky?" His name escapes my lips loudly and is filled with hope, a hope that I've never felt so strong, yet so fragile. My eyes are attached to the long hair of the soldier and blue eyes that lack the certain shine I was used to.

He died. He died right in front of my eyes, I was the one who got him killed. I can still hear his scream when I close my eyes, still picture how he fell off the train. Yet, he's here, alive and different. Please, say something. Tell me it's you, tell me that it's real and I didn't become insane. Tell me you're real. I beg with a torturing hope in my heart, but the words that leave his lips are words I would have never expected.

"Who the hell is Bucky?"

A/N- This chapter got me emotional af, even though it's so bad written because of the fight scene, I'm really sorry 😩 But after 15 chapters, finally a reunion of Evebucky
