42. Out of Control

Bruce' words hang in the air and have killed off the arguments, still owning everyone's attention. Regret is in his brown eyes, revealing that he rather have kept his suicide attempt a secret but he knows it's too late now to take it back. "I got low. I didn't see an end. So, I put a bullet in my mouth, and the other guy spit it out. So I moved on. I focused on helping other people. I was good. Until you dragged me back into this freak show and put everyone here at risk. You want to know my secret, Agent Romanoff? You want to know how I stay calm?"

"Bruce..." I softly speak out his name and carefully take a step closer, trying to appear as kind as possible. "I can call you Bruce, right? I'm sorry, so sorry for everything that happened to you. We're gonna fix this. But please, put the scepter down now."

He just now realizes that he's holding Loki's scepter and the tension vanishes into air when the computer beeps, receiving our attention. Putting down the manipulative weapon, Bruce walks over to the computer. "Sorry, kids, you don't get to see my party trick after all."

"You located the Tesseract?" Thor asks and I let out a sigh of relief, the hatred is gone. Steve shoots me a meaningful look, silently telling me that I did a good job.

"I'm gonna be there the fastest." Tony Stark claims and I try to refrain from rolling my eyes.

"The Tesseract belongs on Asgard. No human is a match for it." The God states and I agree nodding with him, humans are way too impulsive and selfish to deal with a power like this. Tony still turns to leave and Steve stops him quickly.

"You're not going alone!"

"You gonna stop me?" The billionaire scoffs tauntingly and I'm almost about to step in but I know that the stress would just afflict Bruce.

"Put on the suit, let's find out." Steve usually never treats anyone like that but Tony Stark isn't just anyone, he's an arrogant, idiotic ass.

"I'm not afraid to hit an old man." Is he actually serious? Biologically, Steve and I are younger than him, his jokes suck. But before someone can intervene, Bruce notices something on the screen about the Tesseract.

"Oh, my God."

Suddenly an explosion goes off and I get lost in the chaos, deafened by the loud noise. The ground beneath my feet disappears, dragging me down and throwing me off as I land on something hard with no orientation. Gasping in pain, I feel how a sharp object hurts my stomach which forces me to open my eyes that I have closed in fear. A metal rod has hit my stomach, causing a bloody wound and I bite on my lower lip, squinting my eyes when my fingers touch it carefully.

Looking around, I assert that I'm in the lower equipment room right now, the explosion has destroyed the floor. I can't find Steve and try to focus, feeling slightly dizzy as I do my best to sit up. I spot Bruce between the components, his back is moving unsteadily and his loud and heavy breath is audible. For a second, I assume that he's hurt but then the realization hits me like a blow when I notice how he's gripping the floor to maintain control. A fear stronger than I've ever felt before tightens my chest, making breathing even more difficult than the wound does.

"Bruce... T-try to calm down, steady your breath. You could control it before, you'll be able to do this again..." My voice breaks and is shaking but I can't prevent the anxiety that runs through my voice. I'm terrified, close to panic. "You and I, we are alright. We both took the serum and it changed us... Please, don't let Loki win."

"Alright?!" His voice has changed, the bitterness morphs to a growl threat and I flinch at his monstrous roar. "We're far away from alright!!!"

"Come on, open... open!" I clench my teeth and try to get rid of the bangles. My insecure fingers dig desperately into the lock of those handcuffs but they won't open, keeping me weak and helpless. I force myself to stand up, ignoring the stabbing pain in my stomach and continue trying to open the metal rings around my wrists. Breaking out in sweat of dread, I decide that I should try another way. "Bruce... Try not to feel guilty afterwards, okay? This is not you."

His skin staggers between green and his actual skin color as his brown eyes glance at me with guilt, shooting me a knowing look before they turn green. Then another explosion rocks the helicarrier and the lights go off, leaving us in utter darkness. The sound of ripping clothes and sniffs fill the dangerous silence, a few bulbs start jittering. And in the next moment, the roar of the Hulk hovers in the air as the terrifying green monster jumps at me.

I immediately run like hell towards the other direction, the ground trembles with every step the giant takes. The pain burns in my lungs and my hand still presses against the wound to stop the bleeding, I almost jolt up the stairs as I escape the blow of the Hulk in the last second, feeling how the air cuts my face. The fear forces me to keep running and I hide beneath a turbine, feeling like an ant. He's dangerously quiet for an inhuman monster and I start crawling on the ground to the small corridor which is an exit for the equipment room.

My heart pounds as heavy as a hammer, making me afraid that he could hear me. I've always been afraid of losing the people I love or being lonely but never of an actual person. Suddenly, the turbine gets smashed by the Hulk and I flinch, trying not to scream at his sudden appearance. His rage filled face roars at me and I roll sidewards when his fist punches a hole into the ground right next to me, breathing heavily.

I squint my eyes, being ready to get hit by his next punch which would be my death. But then the Hulk gets thrown away by someone else as they fly through the wall into the next room with a loud crash. Widening my eyes, I witness how Thor tries to fight against Bruce, using both hands to protect getting hit by the Hulk's blow.

"We are not your enemies, Banner! Try to think!" Thor tries to calm him down but the Hulk just becomes angrier, throwing the blonde God away like a toy. I stand up, my hand still remaining on my wound and I notice how Thor tries to find his hammer behind the boxes.

"Hey, Hulk!" I shout before the Hulk can reach him and attack him. The green monster needs to be distracted while Thor gets his hammer, otherwise we're all gonna die. "Come on, I thought you weren't weak! Where's the real monster?! Come and get me!"

My deliberate provocation succeeds and the Hulk chases me as I start running away. The adrenaline pumps me up, hijacking the air of my lungs but before he hits me, Thor finally knocks him off with his hammer from behind. The Hulk flies against the wall and I let out a sigh of relief, my heart crashes my rib cage.

"Lady Eve, are you alright?"

"Not. A. Lady." I exhale between my gasps, pressing my lips together because of the wound. "We need a plan."

"Take care of your wound and find protection. I shall take care of this." Thor insists and swings his hammer, ready to continue the battle as the Hulk is about to return.

"Coulson said you and I are gonna work together eventually. And I don't leave my teammates back." I shake my head, standing up straight. He saved me, now it's my turn. "Try to destroy the bangles with your hammer and let me fight by your side."

"Alright, warrior. But this may hurt." He warns me with a goofy smirk and I give a wince of pain when the metal of the asgardian weapon hits my wrists. The bangles smash into a dozen pieces and the cold air on my skin is liberating and refreshing.

"Finally." For the first time in this century, I'm almost about to smile but it vanishes before its appearance. The Hulk comes back and I feel the familiar sibilance between my fingers, creating blasts of electricity.

"Eve, your mighty powers, the electricity is similar to - " Thor stares at my hands and gets cut off by Hulk's roar. I shoot the electricity at him and he tries to fight against my abilities but using his electrified hammer, Thor throws him into the next room, causing the floor to quake. We lead the Hulk further away from any SHIELD agents to minimize the amount of lives at risk.

"Loki!" I blurt out, my eyes widened and glance at Thor. "That was his plan! He's gonna escape, we need to stop him!"

"But what about Banner??" He questions and I notice SHIELD aircrafts coming closer towards us. Thor grabs my arm, pulling me behind the corner as they start shooting at the Hulk. Glass shatters, bullets fly and the green monster roars with a furious rage, jumping out of the helicarrier.

"Let's go!" I urge and check on my wound before we head to Loki's cell. It at least doesn't need to be stitched and I try to cover it with a piece of cloth. Unknown agents cross our way, Loki's people, but Thor takes care of them easily, the basis is invaded. I just hope Steve's fine. Arriving at the cell, we see how Loki casually escapes his cage.

"No!!" We both scream and attack him, only to fly through him and land in the cell. The door gets closed and Loki suddenly disappears as the real one comes out, locking us up. It was an illusion, a trap. I'm not even gonna question how he did that, getting used to this freak show.

"Are you ever not going to fall for that?" His brother tilts his head with mockery and his eyes land on me. "A quite interesting thing she is, isn't she? No use for me, certainly, but interesting and powerful for a petty human. Have you seen her abilities? Almost..." He pauses dramatically, enjoying the attention. "God alike."

"Could you please shut up." I mumble and shoot my electricity against the cell but it's not effected at all. Thor tries to shatter the glass but the cage just shakes dangerously, it would cause us to fall like Fury had demonstrated to Loki. We're gonna die.

"She's not aware yet?" He mockingly raises a brow in the air and I frown, shooting Thor a confused glance.

"I have noticed it when I saw your powers for the first time. The electricity that you create is very similar, actually the same that Mjölnir does." Before I can question what the blonde means, Loki smiles viciously.

"Humans. So stupid. They think us immortal. Should we test that?" The raven-haired god walks over the control panel, threatening to press the button that would drop us 30,000 feet down, right into death.

"Move away, please." Coulson has knocked out two soldiers and now aims a huge gun at the former prisoner. I have mixed feelings, not knowing if this is gonna end well or not since Loki is more powerful than I thought. "You like this? We started working on the prototype after you sent the Destroyer. Even I don't know what it does. Do you want to find out?"

And then there's the deafening silence, as if the world stood still and quiet. Just Coulson's gasp breaks the silence as he is impaled through his heart by the real Loki with the scepter. My eyes widen at the agent slumping down the wall, breathing fast while the life leaves slowly his eyes.

"NO!"

"COULSON!" I scream desperately, slamming my fists against the glass and the blood spreads on his shirt. Loki turns around and glances at Thor for a last time before he opens the hatch. I'm too shocked to think properly, shaking like hell because of Coulson's death. Then Loki hits the button and Thor quickly grabs me by my waist as we drop out of the ship.

The gravity throws us against the ceiling of the cell, hitting our heads and we keep flying roughly through the cage. I squint my eyes, the fall reminds me of my plane crash and I feel how Thor's arm remains steadily around my waist, holding onto me. I don't know where's up and down and lose my orientation, feeling as dizzy as on a roller coaster. My head keeps meeting the metal of the cell, incapable to focus and lost in the fall.

The next thing I hear is how Thor shouts something like "Hold on!", then the sound of his hammer crashing the glass. We break out of the cell and plunge from an incredible height and with a force into the earth, my whole body sorely hurts from the harsh land, even though Thor protects me as much as he can. I hardly move, my face is buried in the earth and I'm just half conscious, driving into the darkness. But my thoughts are just filled with the dead Coulson and I ask myself if he had family.

A/N- I just watched Logan and I may have died.
