38. Sacrifice

"Are you sure you're ready for this? You can cancel it if you want and we could drink tea with Jarvis. You don't need to force yourself into another mission, even against Schmidt, I'm sure Steve can handle it on his own." Howard attempts to talk to me, his concern makes him try to convince me to stay in the facility. I just put on my boots as I prepare to be Voltricity, turning into soldier mode.

"I'm 100% sure, Howard, I don't need a babysitter and I'm fine. See?" A small voltage plays around my finger but it quickly disappears and I roll with my eyes. "I can control my powers. Can you stop acting like an over protective mom now?"

"You don't have to do this." A sigh leaves his lips, he's not sure how to handle me. "It's okay if you need more time to grieve."

"More time? We don't have more time. The world needs me as Voltricity now, not as Eve Farrell." I almost glare at him, being uncontrollably pissed and cold. "I can grieve later. But at the moment, I need to fight, otherwise I'm gonna rip off someone's head. I wasted way too much time with doing nothing."

"Alright, it's still your choice." He follows me after I've left the room and head to the conference room where Steve and the Howling Commandos are waiting for me. We found out where Schmidt's location is through his former ally Doctor Zola, our plan is that Steve distracts them while the Howling Commandos and I surprise Hydra with an attack.

"Sorry for lashing out." Realizing how rude and intolerable I was acting, I sigh. Being nice suddenly takes so much effort, I just don't see the necessity of it anymore. "But I just have two options on how I feel and that's either angry or devastated and I need to be angry to defeat Schmidt. That's my only chance."

"Are you ready?" Steve asks me when he spots me while Howard stays silent for once. Everyone's suited up, the determination on Steve's face makes him look even more like a soldier than the uniform already does.

"Have I ever not been ?" I just answer and turn around to Howard and Mr Jarvis while our team already makes their way to the troop carriers. "Mr Jarvis, I just want to thank you for supporting me and giving me advice when I needed it."

"It's been an honor to work with you, Miss Farrell. It was a quite extraordinary time." We both know that this mission may be the last one, it depends on if we defeat the Red Skull or not. I gain all my strength to send him a smile although it's really hard. Then the butler leaves to give Howard and me time.

"I count on you coming back." The millionaire half smirks, hiding his fear behind it. "You are my greatest invention."

"Suck up your pride, Stark." I pull him into a hug which he immediately returns, my chin lays on his shoulder. He's been an amazing friend the whole time. "I couldn't have asked for a better partner. And I'm sure that you're gonna have even better creations."

"Obviously." He responds and I pull back, seeing the cocky smile on his lips as I roll with my eyes. Taking off my dog tag, I hand it over to him.

"Could you keep it for me? I don't want to wear it on this mission, otherwise it's like he would be here too and I'd just drag him into danger again." I glance at him to signal that it's really important for me. He nods and slides it into his chest pocket.

"But you have to come back." Howard conditions and I nod, although it's a lie. The only reason why I'm still alive is that I want to kill the Red Skull. If I fulfill this, I won't have a real purpose to stay alive anymore.

"Alright, Volt, it's your turn. Hydra group number one is knocked out and Cap already is heading towards the airplane, you should meet him half way." Gabe tells me about the current situation through the communication device that Howard had created for us and in the background is the sound of guns and fights. I start running towards the airplane as well while I hold the device close to my mouth to answer, trying not to focus on the Hydra agents that are chasing after me.

"Yeah about that, let's change the plan. I'm too impatient-", a blast of electricity that I aim at the agents shortly cuts me off, "-to wait for Steve. I'll sneak into the plane before Schmidt can leave. Better plan. Works faster."

"Also more dangerous. Stick to the original plan." The actual plan was that Steve would attack them at the east building, basically entering by knocking at the door and I'd take them down at the west building, then we would meet half way to fight our way together through Hydra and stop the Red Skull as a team. But I don't want to wait until Steve arrives, we would just waste time.

"I'm going now, Steve can join me later. The soldiers of the west building are most likely dead or knocked out, so are the ones in the corridor. I'm about to arrive at the hall where the planes are now."

"Eve, come on, don't be reckless!" The Howling Commando shouts through our connection but I ignore him and keep moving until I arrive at the huge hall. The gigantic black plane, almost as big as the facility itself, is surrounded by a sea of masked soldiers whose attention I attract.

"Morning, soldiers." I greet them with a cold smile, just sarcasm makes my lips twitch up and they aim their weapons at me. "I wouldn't do that if I was you."

Before they're able to fire, I shoot the first one down with electricity and feel how a soldier puts his arm around my neck from behind as the cold metal of the gun is pressed against the skin of my temple. The thick german accent is audible in his threat while his grip remains tightly around me. "One wrong move and you'll die."

I don't hesitate to slam my head against his face and hit his larynx with my elbow while he groans in agony and falls down. Turning around, I take care of the rest of the troop, either with combat or my powers. The furious anger shoots through my whole body, producing adrenaline that keeps me alive and I don't stop fighting against Hydra. Because of them, Bucky is dead. Because of them, I have blood on my hands. But I will be the reason for their end.

The last soldier falls and my eyes widen at the sudden start of the engines of the plane. Rushing towards the huge undercarriage, I let the others know about about it. "Shit, Gabe, Schmidt's already in the plane, he's about to escape!"

"Does that mean we're too late?!" In the moment his words reach me, I'm already taking the risk to jump on the tail wheel and hold onto the metal rods. My breath is unsteady but I don't take a break and climb up the rod into the plane.

"No, I'm on the plane. I'm afraid that we're gonna lose the connection." I warn him and arrive at the fuselage. Continuing the mission, I walk through the corridor to the control room where Schmidt's supposed to be while the plane starts moving and taking off. Hydra soldiers walk around but they're not many, which is why it's easy to knock them out. The connection is already gone.

The plane is loaded with an ocean of bombs where the targets are written on, from Berlin to New York. Johann Schmidt plans to blow up the whole world, even his own home which just makes him seem maniac. I keep sneaking towards the control room and quietly open the door, attempting to surprise him but the room is empty, just the view of the free sky greets me through the glass. It is dangerously quiet and the seat of the pilot is free as I drown in confusion. Who is flying the plane?

A hard object suddenly hits the back of my head as I groan in pain and fall down. A pained pounding is left behind and I pull myself together to stand up, even though I feel slightly dizzy. Facing my attacker, the gun that aims at me is held by the Red Skull. "Welcome to the end of the world, Evelyn Farrell."

"Lovely welcome." I ignore the headache and a voltage arises in my hand behind my back, shooting it at him. He's not like the other soldiers, the serum gave him more strength and better senses and to surprise him will take a lot more. The rage burns in my chest when he successfully dodges. "Give up and you may survive this."

"I know that you want me dead, just as much as I want you dead! You and I both know that we have left humanity behind! So why even bother to pretend?" He scoffs and pulls the trigger. The blue energy that leaves the gun reminds me of the robot that attacked us on the train and the distraction almost gets me killed but I can dodge in the last second. Clenching my teeth, I keep avoiding the blasts of energy until I reach him and punch him in the face. The nasty crack of his bones fills the air as he drops the gun, my fist hurts like hell.

"Rot in hell." I hiss and let out the electricity as my hands are around his throat, choking and pressing him against the wall. The anger overwhelms me and I tighten my grip but he uses all his strength to kick me in the stomach and a pained noise leaves my mouth. My grip loosens and I suddenly feel nauseous while he takes the opportunity to punch me again, but even harder, resulting in me landing on the ground.

"This is your end." He takes the gun after he has adjusted his face from my punch, aiming the barrel at my face. He's stronger than me and his blood red skin is immune against my electricity. I breathe heavily and restrain to spit blood, ready to accept my death until a familiar shield suddenly hits Schmidt's head.

"Not today." Steve enters the room and gives me a hand up before he picks up his shield while I stare at him with widened eyes. How did he manage to get onto the plane? "Are you alright?"

I nod and Schmidt stands up again, glaring at us with an animosity in his eyes. "America's favorites. I almost feel honored to be the one who's gonna cause your deaths." Then he assaults us with his gun and Steve protects us with his shield.

Steve immediately throws his weapon at our enemy which bounces off of Schmidt and I catch the back flying shield, passing it Steve. I immediately attack Schmidt with a blast of electricity and this time, he flies back against the blue luminous control panel. A mechanism is released and a blue blazing cube comes out, streaks of the color of the object flow through the air and my eyes widen at the mysterious cube.

"What have you done?!" Red Skull shouts in devastation and grabs after the cube. Steve places an arm in front of me, motioning me to take a few steps back when the cube shoots a beam into the air.

"What is this..." I whisper in astonishment when the beam reveals a portal to space. Unknown stars and planets from another solar system are on the ceiling, the whole universe. How is this possible? What kind of cube is that? Johann Schmidt suddenly screams in agony and I watch how the cube shatters him into pieces, transporting him to the universe. The portal vanishes and the cube melts its way through the plane into the ocean.

"Let's... Let's talk about this later." Steve speaks up after a moment of silence. We both don't hesitate to run to the control console and look at the monitor. "The plane, filled with bombs, moves with an insane speed to New York. Can you stop it?"

"Steve, I only produce electricity, I don't control it. The plane would just pick up the pace like the train. There's no way to stop it." I bite on my lower lip, desperately searching for a solution but I don't find one. "We're right now in the middle of nowhere, no one is here who could die apart from... "

"Us." Steve finishes my sentence with a heavy weight in his voice as he swallows and glances at me. "No one would die apart from us. We can force it down. Eve..."

"You know my answer." I cut him off and place my hand on his upper arm. Weirdly, I'm not scared. I've seen much more than most people have, experienced things that I wouldn't have survived and now I'm a super-soldier who can produce electricity. It's enough. "Let's do it together."

"Okay." He nods slightly but then he suddenly grabs me by my waist, throwing me like a light bag on his shoulder. I frown and shoot him a confused look. His behavior is unusual, pretty odd.

"Wait, what are you doing?? Why are you heading to the fuselage?"

"The emergency aircrafts are here. I flew one before I got to you, it's easy, almost like driving a car. You're gonna fly one now." We arrive there and Steve roughly throws me into one of the small aircraft. Then he closes the glass door and uses his shield to damage the mechanism as I realize what he's doing. "Fly back to Peggy and Howard. I'm gonna put the plane in the water."

"Wait, what?!" My eyes widen and I try to open the aircraft but it stays closed, capturing me. "No, no, what are you doing?! You can't just sacrifice yourself, we want to do it together, Steve! Open it now! Open it!"

"I'm sorry, Eve. But you're supposed to live. You need to live. I can't break my promise to Bucky, so don't you even dare fly back." He decides strictly and tears arise in my eyes, impending to run down my face. He's serious, strongly determined about his decision. My fists land constantly on the glass, beating against it with an awful desperation as he walks towards the control panel that frees the aircrafts.

"No, Steve! Don't you dare to press the button! Please, please, I'm begging you! Don't do this to me, please, don't!" I scream and the tears leave my eyes. The thought of living without Bucky already kills me but just the thought of living without my best friend as well now makes me want to commit suicide. I can barely breathe and continue screaming while the pain in my fists grows. What kind of world would it be without them? "I don't want to live without you, Steve, please don't do this to me!! Don't leave me alone!! I'm begging you!"

"I'm so sorry. I love you." Steve's eyes are filled with tears and sorrow is in his smile.

Then he presses the button.

A/N- And that's how their story in the forties end and a new age starts. Be prepared for the next update! 💕
