35. Farewell, Canary
A/N- I'm so sorry, ahaha. But this hurt me as well.

"Remember when I made you ride the cyclone on Coney Island?" I ask Steve, thinking of the day he, Eve and I spent at the carnival years ago. My eyes narrow at the dangerously unstable rope that we should use to get down and jump on the upcoming train beneath us. The cold lashes my face and the snow of the mountains causes me to freeze my ass off, my hands are numb. My heart almost crashes my rib cage when I think about roping down with barely anything but a metal rod. I'm not a super-soldier like them.
"Yeah, and I threw up." Steve scrunches up his face at the memory and I let out a small chuckle which leaves my lips rather nervously.
"This isn't pay back, is it?"
"Now why would I do that?" He answers with sarcasm which is a really rare occasion, his voice reveals that he's subtly teasing me. What a punk, it is pay back.
"Doctor Zola is on the train, Hydra dispatcher gave him permission to open up the throttle. Wherever he's going, they must need him bad." Eve lets us know and stands up, finishing listening to the German radio and joining us. "Well, that's what I understood."
"Aren't you freezing?" I'm concerned about her really thin and tight combat suit that the stupid millionaire made for her. Did it seriously have to be that tight? Men might look at her in an inappropriate way.
"Nope, Howard used a material that is mostly cold resistent. He also fixed my hood that I had to rip off on the last mission. And I'm producing electricity to keep me warm." She grins proudly and I roll my eyes. Why does she mention his name again, is this really necessary?? Howard here, Howard there, I can't hear this name anymore.
"Do you have to mention him?"
"Don't be jealous, I'm still your fiancée." Eve laughs, showing haughtily the dog tag and I'm less annoyed now, thanks to that beautiful sound. Grabbing her hand, I pull her close to me with a grin as she flinches in fright with a squeal.
"If you just knew what I'd do with you right now, if the others weren't here." I whisper into her ear and she immediately blushes, slapping me playfully. But it was definitely worth it, she's always so adorable when she blushes.
"I swear, James, if you tease me like that again..." She mutters but sounds slightly weak by my words and I raise a brow in the air as a smirk graces my lips. Eve has called me James more often lately and I can't help but smile at the way she says my name.
"What do you wanna do, huh? Do you wanna do what you did last night, my dear?"
"I hate you." Her face reddens even more and my grin widens, teasing her shyness is probably one of the best things in this world. Pecking her lips, I just shrug.
"I know that you love me."
"Let's get going because they're moving like the devil." Montgomery announces while spotting the train from a distance through the binoculars. Steve, Eve and I get ready, Gabe is right behind us.
"We only got about a ten second window. You miss that window, we're bugs on a windshield." My best friend attaches his shield to his back before he grabs onto the metal rod, already being in position for the jump.
"Mind the gap." Eve comments with a little smirk right behind him and doesn't seem to be afraid of roping down. Generally, she's barely scared of anything anymore, she's become stronger, almost reckless.
"Gotta get moving, buds!" Dugan shouts and on a signal, we start roping down one after the other. The wind rushes through my ears, just strengthening the cold while my grip is tightly around the rod since my life depends on it. Although it's cold like hell, my hands are slightly sweaty and my heart races when I feel the empty nothing underneath my feet, how it attempts to drag me down.
Within seconds, we land successfully on the train and hold onto the top, the slippery roof makes my heart almost jumps out of my chest when my halt is unsteady for a short moment. I immediately check on Eve, worried if she may be hurt but instead she already starts moving.
"Hey, Bucky, move your ass!" Eve shouts loudly at me and motions me and Gabe to follow her and Steve to the ladder at the front of the train. The corner of my lips go up at her bossy enthusiasm and we do as she says. The head wind hampers my view but in the end, we arrive at the ladder and Steve goes down first while Gabe's gonna head to the control room.
I'm the last who enters the train and the blonde goes first since he's the leader of this mission and the Captain. It's empty here and not much warmer, the freight car has saved the winter from outside. My gun is loaded, Steve's shield is positioned and Eve's electricity ignites, the three of us are prepared for an attack. Hydra tortured me and even worse, they almost killed Eve. Just the thought of this makes me feel angry and so furious that I wanna kill every single person of this disgusting organization. They should suffer for this mistake.
The super-soldiers walk ahead into another wagon and in the exact moment when I'm about to follow them, the door separates us, only letting us keep the contact through the glass. I try to open it but it doesn't work and Eve beats against the glass, her mouth form words that I at first don't understand but then I get it. Bucky, behind you!
Turning around, I don't hesitate and shoot at the Hydra agents that are coming from the other side of the wagon. I use the black boxes as protection, the sound of flying bullets echo through the freight car and my cold grip clutches at the trigger, not stopping to fire.
I'm outnumbered, they even have better weapons and the more bullets arrive on my side, the faster my fear grows. Beads of perspiration are on my forehead, created by panic and bare angst and I clench my teeth in frustration when the last bullet leaves my gun. Sitting down on the ground, I hide behind the boxes as my breath gets unsteady.
I'm terrified. I'm hella terrified because I know it won't take long until I die. The panic arises in my chest, making it hard for me to breathe and I can feel how the color leaves my face, turning me pale. I don't wanna die. I still need to see her, I have to spend the rest of my life with her.
"Bucky!" Eve's voice is suddenly so close and I look up, watching how the door breaks and a blast of electricity takes down the Hydra soldiers. I stand up, my eyes widen at her and she shoots me a worried glance as she enters this wagon. "Are you alright?"
"I had him on the ropes." I lie, not wanting her to know how afraid I was and she sighs, obviously seeing the truth. Her hand strokes gently my cheek and her green eyes bore into mine with a compassion I cannot describe.
"I know you did. I'm just glad that you're alright."
"Hey, are you two okay?" Steve joins us as he still pants, sounding slightly exhausted. We nod and he steadies his breath, removing his helmet. "I'm not sure what just happened, but Eve and I probably just fought a kind of robot? He was pretty strong."
"Until I electrified him and Steve kicked his ass." Eve tells me proudly and I chuckle, slowly getting rid of my anxiety and calming down more.
"Sounds crazy." I state and see from the corner of my eye how another robot appears, walking straight to us and we are his weapon's aim. My eyes widen in shock at the new machine, questioning how Hydra managed to do this and the familiar sound of Eve's electricity arises.
She shoots a beam of her power at the android but to our surprise, it doesn't effect him at all. Frowning, she doesn't hesitate to attack him again and again, but he keeps moving toward us while the sound of his gun gets louder and louder, letting us know that he's about to shoot. "Why isn't it working?"
"Get down!" I warn her and take her down, covering her with my arms while Steve uses his shield to protect us. The pressure of the energy that is fired throws us all to the ground, causing me and Eve to roll away as I let out a pained groan when my back hits the floor. Immediately looking at Eve, I notice how she clenches her teeth to avoid any pained noises.
I stand up, not having the time to ask if she's alright and see that Steve was thrown against the wall, how hard he tries to stand up again. Taking my chance, I grab his shield and his gun and shoot at Hydra's weapon. The robot loads his energy and fires it at me again and this time, it is much stronger than the last shot.
The ground beneath my feet suddenly disappears and instead of the train, I'm under the free sky as I get thrown away, losing control of the stability. The cold wind rushes into my ears and lashes my face, dragging me away but I mange to grab onto the metal rod of the freight car in the last second before I fall as my heart crashes against my rib cage and I gasp in shock.
My eyes are widened in fear and stare at the rod that keeps me alive for this moment. The grip of my hands around this single piece of thin metal is so strong that I'm afraid that I could break it and I don't dare to look down to the depth of the mountain. I pant and the panic settles down in my stomach, making it hard for me to breathe. I can see that the rod is about to break and can't carry my weight, it's just a question of time. The hole that arose through the little explosion is too far away to climb to, until then I would've already fallen into death.
Death. There's no other way. I'm gonna die and I won't survive this, there's no way. I'm hanging on the driving train and my arms start aching from holding on, clenching with my teeth I try to ignore the biting cold in my sweaty hands. The strength leaves me while the angst just increases, mentally feeding on me. My eyes burn and are filled with tears that don't leave.
"Bucky!" Eve screams and comes out, devastation is written on her face when she sees me. She reaches out for my hand and her body is pressed against the damaged part of the train to have a steady halt against the head wind. "Hang on and grab my hand! I promise I won't let you go!"
I can see how a tear rolls down her face and how desperate she tries to grab my hand but the distance between us is too big to overcome. She knows it. She knows that there's no chance for me and so do I but yet, she doesn't give up. I reach out my hand and just a few inches tear us apart, I'm just a few inches away from the life I always wanted. And in this moment, the rod breaks.
"NO!!!" She cries desperately and I fall into the depth, a frightened scream leaves my mouth and the last thing I see of her is her lips forming my name and the tears streaming down her face.
The rush of the air enter forcefully my ears, hurting them and I get lost in the fall. I struggle to breathe, the air gets thinner and thinner, stabbing my lungs and suffocating me. My mind is a mess, I don't even know anymore where's top and bottom, I'm just falling like a stone, knowing that I'm gonna die and this shatters my heart into a million pieces.
I'm never gonna see Steve again. I'm never gonna see my family again. I'm never gonna marry the girl I've always loved. Eve. Even though, I can barely think because of the panic, my heart somehow holds onto a memory. A memory of 1936.
"Isn't it beautiful how honest the sky is? It's crying, Bucky, we're standing under the crying sky!"
She spins around herself as a beautiful sound escapes her lips. Her laugh. It sounds like a happy song that brightens my heart, causing it to beat faster. Then she smiles at me that takes my breath away that I can't even speak. She's so beautiful, so pure and full of light like an angel.
She was my light. God, how much I loved her, and I always will. We should have stayed under the crying sky. I love you, Evelyn Farrell.
Till the end of the line.
Farewell, canary.
