34. Our Tomorrow

"Evelyn Farrell. Will you marry me?"

My jaw could meet the ground, that's how far my mouth is open in shock. I just stare at him and am completely taken aback, his words have stolen the oxygen that I breathe. My mind is empty and I can't even feel if my heart is still beating because I can't focus on anything else than his proposal. He actually did it, Bucky really proposed to me. It seems so unreal, like a dream that I don't know how to deal with. Is this much luck even real?

"A-are you sure?" I somehow find a way to speak, even though my voice is shaky and the words leave my lips crumbly. Goosebumps spread over my whole body, worn by my paralysis like a second skin.

"I am sure, I've never been so sure about something." He stands up, his enthusiasm still lasts although I haven't answered yet. "You almost died and it made me realize that I can't live without you, it assured me that I need you to live. And what I accidentally did yesterday is just a proof that I really want it. I had a whole day to think about it and couldn't help but be excited at this thought."

"But- but we're just dating for a couple months, it's not really long." I remind him, want him to rethink this. It's still possible that he'll change his mind and I just don't want him to regret anything.

"And?" Bucky laughs securely, not caring about this and he cups my face with his hands, looking deeply into my eyes. "I'm allowed to kiss you in public for a couple months. But I love you for nine years, Eve. Nine whole years. And the only thing that I regret is that I haven't told you sooner that I love you."

I'm still speechless and place my hands on his, holding them tightly. "I just don't want to disappoint you... What if you'll find something about me that you dislike?"

"Impossible." He confirms with confidence. "I know you. You always blush when you hear compliments although you deserve them. You bite on your lower lip when you're nervous or think about anything and you have no idea how much control you have over me with that." A little laugh escapes his lips. "You can't eat more than five apples because you'll feel sick afterwards. You're very ticklish. You scrunch up your face adorably in confusion when you don't understand something but that's a rare occasion. You prefer to sleep on the right side of the bed. Your favorite ice cream is chocolate and you love big places. Your nose is always slightly red in winter. And you're so caring about others that you sometimes forget yourself."

"Why do you know so many unimportant facts and details about me?" I ask and feel how my eyes are filled with tears but they don't leave their place. The way he talks about me is just so affecting that it makes me weak.

"Because I love you." He simply reasons with a sincere smile. "And I'll never leave you. You're stuck with me. Eve, I want this, I want you to be my future. I want to have a little daughter with you that I'd love to name Rosie, I want to give you the family you never had. So marry me and make me the happiest man alive."

I smile and try not to tear up by his words, it's so heart-warming that he even thought about names for children already. And his whole proposal fills me with happiness, making me laugh with joy and tears now. I can't believe what's happening right now, the love of my life really proposed to me. Bucky, who's always been there for me, the only one who can read what I feel and drove off my loneliness. My salvation.

"Rosie is a beautiful name." I smile brightly and put my arms around his neck, decreasing the distance between us.

"Wait, does this mean... " His eyes widen and dares me to answer his proposal. I laugh and can't prevent how my eyes tear up now.

"Yes, James Buchanan Barnes, I will marry you and make you the happiest man in the whole world."

Bucky's whole face brightens up like the stars in the night and he lifts me up by hugging me, suddenly spinning me around. I let out a squeal and laugh, my hands resting on his shoulders while he chuckles as if I was as light as a feather and his arms steady me. When Bucky lets me down, he doesn't hesitate to lean forward and when our lips touch, it's like the world would stop spinning and the moment would last forever as if the time stood still. His name runs a thousand times through my mind while his hands are placed on my lower back as usual and euphoria spreads through every single nerve of my body.

"I didn't have the time to buy the ring." He breaks the kiss, his forehead leans against mine and his breathing is heavy. I let out a chuckle and shake slightly my head, catching my breath while my eyes are still closed.

"I don't care. I don't need a ring to know that I'm your fiancée."

"I love that sound." Bucky grins and lets go of me, resulting in me opening my eyes again. Taking off his dog tag, he shows me his idea. "You can wear my dog tag and I can wear yours. Who even needs rings?"

"You want to give me your identity?" A smile appears on my lips while I look at the engraving of his name on the dog tag and he nods assuringly. I remove my necklace and hand him my dog tag, although it's probably not legal but that doesn't matter to us at the moment. I'm just glad that a part of him is always with me now.

"I think we owe the others an answer since they helped me with the whole riddle." He scratches the back of his neck with a little chuckle and I roll my eyes playfully, still glancing at his dog tag around my neck that is now basically my engagement ring.

"Can't we just enjoy our time alone together?"

"As much as I'd love to do this, I bet that the others are right now on the other side of the door eavesdropping on us." Bucky walks towards the door and opens it to prove his assumption. In fact, there are standing Peggy, Steve and Howard.

"I swear that this device is gonna make us listen better to their conversation- oh, hello." Howard greets us awkwardly when he notices our presence through Peggy who nudges his chest, resulting in him immediately hiding the small invention of his behind his back.

"We weren't trying to eavesdrop!" Steve blurts panicky out and lifts his hands acquiescently in the air. "Sorry but we really need to know the answer, I've been waiting for this for nine years."

"I'm surrounded by idiots." Peggy sighs, her hand runs down her face and Howard gives up, throwing his device in the corner. "But come on, tell us now before we explode from the suspense!"

Grabbing his hand, I smirk and show them his dog tag around my neck, trying not to squeal. "We're engaged!"

The three of them cheer with happiness and embrace us, congratulating Bucky and me for the great news. Howard points with his finger at the ceiling, announcing enthusiastically his idea. "To the pub! This must be celebrated!"

"It's unfair that we can't get drunk. Stupid fast metabolism." I groan and glance at Bucky and Peggy who are slightly tipsy and Howard who probably doesn't even know anymore that the earth goes around the sun. Steve sighs but ends up grinning slightly. We're in the pub as Howard suggested and here's no one else, probably because of the regular bomb attacks and the fact that it's actually closed.

"Probably better for you. But hey, you're engaged." The blonde declares with a tender voice. "You really made it, Eve, and I'm so happy for you. How are you feeling?"

"I'm marrying the love of my life." My glance lands on Bucky, witnessing how he bursts out into laughter because Howard just tripped and fell to the ground. The smile on my lips widens and I almost chuckle. "I'm happy."

"Call your future son Steve." He suggests jokingly, making me laugh slightly while Peggy tries to help Howard to get up.

"I think if we have children, it'll be a daughter named Rosalyn but called Rosie. Sorry." I shrug and nudge him playfully, smirking at him. "But nonetheless, you're still gonna be the godparent. Maybe even with Peggy? I mean, you love her, don't you?"

"Yes." He answers immediately, looking at her as she catches his glance at the same time, smiling at him. I'm happy for him as well and smile brightly.

"Then you should go and ask her out for a dance! You always said you're waiting for the right partner and there she is, waiting for you as well." I try to motivate him to make a move. "It's the first time that I see you that fascinated by a girl, give it a try, Steve."

"When all this is over, I will." He promises, referring to the war. "When's the wedding gonna be, by the way?"

"When all this is over as well. Right now, we're way too busy with missions and Hydra  anyway, and somehow you and I are known as Captain America and Voltricity. I have no idea who we're gonna be when they don't need us anymore. I mean, am I just allowed like that to leave the army after war with my powers?"

"Who knows? We're basically property of the government." Steve lets out a sigh, suddenly laughing. "I think Howard and Bucky are fighting."

"Wait, what?" I frown and look back at the drunk idiots, seeing how they're barking like dogs at each other. Peggy just staggers up to us and leaves the boys over there alone. Steve half smiles at her and I stand up, sighing. "I'll try to solve this problem."

"Why am I not invited to your wedding?!" Howard yells mortally offended at my fiancé and he's babbling like a drunk baby.

"Because there is no wedding yet, Stark! I can't and actually don't wanna invite you because we haven't even decided a date yet!" Bucky answers loudly, being at least half sober. "And I don't want you to walk down the aisle with Eve, Mr Jarvis or Steve can do that!"

"Guys, calm down- "

"But I wanna do it!" Howard interrupts me and suddenly sinks slowly down to the ground. "I feel the gravity."

"Steve!" I call for help, rolling with my eyes at the drunk millionaire while my best friend rushes over and takes care of Howard. Bucky sighs and sits down, being done with Stark's behavior.

"Enjoy your time together and escape to the pub bunker if London gets bombed. I'll bring them back to the SSR facility." Steve backs the drunk inventor and Peggy heads to the exit with them, helping her friend to walk.

"Thanks, pal!" Bucky calls out and they leave the pub. I grin and pick up the empty bottles and glasses that got left behind until I suddenly feel arms around me and a familiar breath next to my face as I get clutched to a muscular chest. My mouth forms a smile and I feel safe and sound like home. "What are you doing, canary?"

"Cleaning the mess that you idiots left." I try to ignore the goosebumps on my skin that he causes with his warm whisper next to my ear.

"You smell good." He breathes the scent of my hair and I laugh, turning around and meeting a maybe too relaxed Bucky Barnes. His facial features are soft and his wonderful gray-blue eyes lack of convergence.

"You're drunk."

"I'm engaged." He corrects me and points at the old piano of the pub. "Why haven't you played anything yet? It's been so long since I've heard you playing and singing."

"Maybe because I'm not the lonely girl from Brooklyn anymore. Music was my only friend before I met you." I state jokingly dramatic and glance at the wooden instrument. "I just don't have the time anymore. Being Voltricity and a fiancée is a lot of work."

"I just want you to know that I'm glad that the world now almost sees you like I do. Just almost, because no one's ever gonna look at you the same way I do. You are my life, canary." He affirms fondly and his smile weakens my knees, taking my breath away until he buries his head into my neck, chuckling. "I swear, whatever perfume you're wearing, it drives me crazy."

I snort with laughter and his chuckle slightly tickles my neck. My arms are around his back, embracing him as if someone will try to steal him from me. My heart races like hell, almost assuring me that he hears its beat too but I can't help but smile. I'm gonna marry him.

A/N- I'm so happy, I could cry of joy :') I hoped that you liked the chapter!
