27. The Red Skull
The land has succeeded and to be honest, it was actually funny. Steve and I bury the parachutes underneath the mud, so Hydra wouldn't find them, then we hide behind the trees and watch the facility from a safe distance. It is well guarded and spotlights shine through the area and fog. Before I can ask Steve how we should sneak in, troop carriers pass us and we look at each other.
"You first." I whisper and he nods, running towards the last truck. I follow him and wait till he jumps into the carrier, then I give a start, use my strength and jump just a second after him into the transporter. It is still unbelievable how strong I've become, I wouldn't have even made the drop.
Two Hydra soldiers with masks stare at us and an uncomfortable silence arises, no one really goes in for something. I smile awkwardly and stand up, raising my hands. "Hello, soldiers."
I knock them out with electricity, leaving them unconscious on the ground. Steve smirks proudly, throwing them out of the truck and we sit quietly down, just my heart thumps loudly in excitement. I try to block out that Bucky might be dead, he still has to be alive. The carrier arrives at the facility and the curtain gets removed by a Hydra agent, but before he can do something, Steve punches him with his shield. We sneak out of the truck and hope not to get caught, making our way to an entrance.
"Don't wanna be rude but your shield isn't exactly inconspicuous." I note sarcastically while we walk behind armors, being careful to remain hidden.
"But we need protection from the bullets." He points out and climbs quickly through an armor on the roof, waiting for me. "Do you need help?"
"I can climb on my own, thanks." I huff, needing a bit longer than him and causing him to chuckle. "Just because you're twice as strong as me doesn't mean that I need help. This panzer is just damn slick."
"Sure." He scoffs teasingly and we run into the facility. Through a dark corridor, we end up at a door and take a look through the glass. It looks like in an industry, they're producing huge weapons as I swallow slightly. Our country doesn't have high chances, unless we blow this all up.
"How should we- "
Steve cuts me off by knocking at the door, making the Hydra guard turn around and open the door and Steve hits his face with the door. He grabs the unconscious Nazi and drags him on the floor, then he enters the hall.
"Or we do it like that." I shrug and follow him. A lot of guards are walking around, all are armed. We just need to find the prisons, then we can free our soldiers and they can help us to fight our way out of this. Steve and I run fast, always stop by boxes when it seems like Hydra would see us.
A blue, bright light in a small capsule catches my attention, one of many on a box. They seem to be important, maybe they're some sort of energy. I take a capsule and place it in my pocket, Howard will analyze it then. Continuing our mission, we finally find the prisons and I let out a breath of relief. The few guards that are supervising the prisoners are easily knocked out by Steve and me.
The darkness here makes it hard to recognize anything, let alone to find Bucky, and the cells look like bird cages. Hundreds of soldiers stare at us, most of them look pretty rough and are injured while Steve and I open the cells and let them free.
"Who are you supposed to be?" A dark skinned man asks with confusion and Steve hesitates for a moment.
"I'm... Captain America."
I roll with my eyes. Why did he have to use his stage name? I prefer Steve Rogers to Captain America, but nonetheless I use my operation name too. "My name is Voltricity. But you can call me Eve as well."
"Eve?" Someone asks but it's not Bucky's voice. I look around and see that it belongs to a blonde man, middle thirty, I guess. Does he know me? "Are you Eve? As in Bucky's dame Eve?"
"You know Bucky?!" I almost shout in excitement and run towards him. "Is he alive?? Where is he??"
"I'm a friend of his. My name's Dum Dum Dugan." He introduces himself. "Bucky told me a lot about you, would've never expected to meet y'a like this. But I don't know if he's alive or where he exactly is. The last time I saw him was when they dragged him away to the east building for experiments. That was a week ago or something."
"Okay, thanks." I try not to focus on the fact that he's been there for a week already, seven whole days. I'm coming for you, Bucky, just hold on.
"Get out fast and give 'em hell. I'll meet you guys in the clearing with anybody else I find." Steve announces when he opens the last cell, then he shoots me a look, telling me that we are gonna search for Bucky immediately.
"Wait! You know what you're doing?" The man keeps us back and Steve shrugs.
"Yeah. I've knocked out Adolf Hitler over two hundred times." Then he starts running as I scrunch up my face in confusion.
"Good luck! And take this!" I wish Dugan and hand him the backpack with the first-aid kid. He salutes with respect before I catch up with Steve and run with him to the direction where the labs are. Thanks to the few German lessons, I could slightly understand the signs. "You know, just because you're Captain America now doesn't mean I'm gonna call you that."
"What do you mean?" He asks while punching a few guards and freeing our way to the labs. I attack them with blasts of electricity, stunning them and sometimes I just punch them with my fists as well. We can hear how the fight outside has started, the 1-0-7th against Hydra.
"Captain America is just a poster boy." I dodge a blow and fight back, knocking the guard out. "I know Steve Rogers behind the poster boy. That's the guy I'll follow."
He grins slightly, using his shield to protect himself from a bullet and I notice the security camera in the corner. It moves towards us, recording Steve and me. I clench with my teeth and put forth my hand, blowing the camera up. "Someone's watching us. We have an audience."
"Then we should hurry." He urges and all guards are finally defeated. Following the signs, we end up in a dark basement and I shout Bucky's name but no answer returns. The lab should be here, where is he? An electric sphere arises in my hand, making it possible for us to see something.
"I still need to get used to this." Steve half laughs and I breathe out a little chuckle, shaking my head but it eases when we see a small man escaping from a room. He notices us and freezes for a second, numbed by fear. I'm not sure if we should attack him or not, he looks weak and offenseless but before I've made a decision, he already runs away.
The room. What if it's more than a room? What if... I run towards the chamber, the corridor suddenly seems to be endless long and the air horribly muggy. My legs feel as heavy as lead but I force myself to keep running as if my life depended on it and it actually does. Be there, I pray, not stopping. Be there, be there, be there! My chest feels tight and the anxiety clings to my heart when I enter the room which turns out to be a lab as expected.
Steve follows me the whole time and we look around until we hear a weak mumbling. His mumbling. My eyes widen and I follow the voice impatiently, I even start shaking. I arrive at a diving bed and see him alive and tied up, murmuring his name and numbers and staring into space.
"Bucky..." I let out a breath of relief and my eyes get teary. It feels like a burden gets taken away from me and I'm overwhelmed by happiness. Thank God, he's alive.
"Eve?" His numbness breaks and he looks at me with disbelief, his voice is soft and weak. He looks rough like he went through hell. A smile is on my face, drowning in my tears of joy and I nod while Steve unleashes him.
"It's me. Me and Steve."
"You're not supposed to be here... Get out of here and be safe..." He coughs, just staring at me and Steve helps him to get up. He sounds so broken. What did they do to him?
I don't even hesitate when he's standing and put my arms around his neck, pulling him into a tight hug. I feel his heart beating against mine and can't help but cry, way too afraid to let go of him now. He's here, he's safe in my arms. Spending three months without him, even thinking that he's in the war zone, drove me crazy. A sob escapes my lips but I just can't hold it back and I'm overwhelmed by happiness. "I thought you were dead. They told me you were dead."
"Did you seriously think that I'd leave you, canary?" He puts his arms around me and tries to sound as cocky as always but fails. He buries his face into my hair and his strong arms press me even tighter against his chest, melting with me into one. "Never. You're stuck with me."
I close my eyes, just enjoying his presence and the familiar feelings that he causes. We pull back when we hear an explosion and Bucky's glance finally lands on Steve, his eyes widen in shock. "What happened to you?"
"I joined the army." Steve answers jokingly. "We need to leave now, they wanna blow up the whole building."
Steve and I support Bucky who's still weakened by whatever the hell Hydra did to him. While running to the stairs because the exists are destroyed, Bucky stares at both of us in disbelief, especially when I kick a door open. "Apparently, I missed a lot."
"If you just knew..." I mumble, referring to my new abilities now. Bucky seems to remember now that we both went under experiments.
"Did it hurt?" He asks us half curious, half concerned.
"A little." I answer after sharing a short look with Steve, knowing how motherly Bucky can be and that we rather spare him the details. If he found out that I got struck by lightning, he would go insane.
"Is it permanent?"
"So far!" Steve shrugs it off and we hurry to go upstairs, everything explodes below us, leaving a huge fire. The smoke quenches the air, causing Bucky to cough a lot more and I press my lips together, glancing at him worriedly. Our aim is the metal bridge that leads us to the other side, the only safe way out of here. Steve who walked in front of us suddenly stops. There's someone on the bridge.
"Captain America!" An old man with a thick german accent greets him, behind him is the small man that Steve and I let run. "How exciting! I'm a great fan of your films. So Dr. Erskine managed it after all. Not exactly an improvement, but still impressive."
I don't know why, but this man leaves a rage and shiver, especially by mentioning Dr. Erskine who was as important to Steve as Mr Jarvis is to me. His whole presence and the way he acts confirm who he is. "You're Johann Schmidt."
His glance lands on me and the way how his fake admiration changes to rage makes the blood freeze in my veins. Bucky notices that and immediately stands protectively in front of me, covering me. "The girl who took down a whole Hydra group. And destroyed the security cameras. How should I call you? Voltricity or Evelyn Farrell?"
"Your choice." I shrug, trying not to be terrified by the fact that he somehow found out my name. I can't be scared right now, that would be weak, which is why I make a step forward, so Bucky wouldn't protect me. "Your group must be pretty weak if a girl like me could take it down within seconds."
"You think you're the only one with new powers? I admit that Howard Stark's done a great job and he'll eventually pay for it. But I'm still the greatest success of humankind." He starts peeling off the skin of his face and throws it like a mask into the fire, revealing the Red Skull. "I've already hurt your loved ones, Evelyn. And soon, I'll destroy your whole world."
"You two don't have one of those, do you?" Bucky stutters completely dumbfounded and I try not to scrunch up my face in disgust because this was really just gross.
"You are gonna die for what you've done, Johann Schmidt." I think of what he's done to Bucky, how he threatens Howard and my country and a furious calm lies in my voice. "Not today, not tomorrow. And you know why? Because I choose when you die."
"Don't overestimate yourself." He scoffs. "You and the Captain are deluded. You pretend to be simple soldiers, but in reality you are just afraid to admit that we have left humanity behind. You will fall."
"You're wrong." My lips form a cold smile. "My rise has just begun."
Steve uses the opportunity and punches him in the face, making him fall and I fire an electric blast at him, my glare pierce through the ones of Red Skull. He gets up, barely effected by Steve's punch and just rubs his arm that got hit by my electricity. I clench my teeth, holding back a swear and the small man or sidekick presses a button, separating the Red Skull from Steve and me with the bridge.
They escape and we don't waste any more time and go upstairs, not talking about what just happened. I just threatened someone for the first time, a real death threat, and it somehow felt satisfying. What does that tell about me? Another explosion causes the ground to shake and we see an unstable metal beam, it's the last way to make it out alive.
"You first." I tell Bucky and before he can discuss and make me go first, I interrupt him. "We don't have time and I'm a super-soldier, go!"
He sighs and does as I say, making his way carefully to the other side and trying to keep his balance. I can see that he's shaking and when the ground starts quaking again, he pauses for a second, holding his breath. My eyes widen when I see that the beam is about to break.
"Bucky!" I warn him and he starts running as the beam breaks. The only reason why he makes it is because he took a jump, landing rather hard on the other side. He turns around, seeing that there's no way out for Steve and me anymore.
"There's gotta be a rope or something!" He shouts desperately, looking around.
"Just go! Get out of here!" Steve yells, knowing that I'm gonna be okay with that. I need to find a way out of here for us.
"No, not without you!" Bucky stays stubborn which doesn't surprise me and then I look down. It's pretty high but the distance between Bucky and us is actually not that impossible. It's worth a try.
"Hey, Stevie." I nudge him with a smirk. "Wanna do something crazy?"
