24. Voltricity
"Still mad at me?" Howard gives me an injection, penicillin, against bacterial infections. I stare at him in disbelief, tilting my head as if he wants to provoke me with this stupid and ridiculous question. While I'm now laying in the capsule with just a shirt and pants and get an injection, Mr Jarvis prepares all the necessary equipments, putting the metal pads on my arms.
"Are you kidding me? I can still see the red shape of my hand on your cheek because it was literally a minute ago." A few shots pause our conversation and I'm seriously unable to cope with my feelings because I don't know if I'm supposed to be angry or scared. "I suggest you to hurry up before we get killed by Nazis."
"Okay, okay, I get it, you're still angry. Tell me when I should stop the machine, okay? Don't try to bear the pain. Jarvis, I could use some ice for my cheek." He requests, making me roll my eyes while Mr Jarvis just sighs.
"I have to admit that your behavior was not exemplary. Even if I could go to get ice, I wouldn't do it."
"Could you please hurry?!" The soldier breaks our conversation, hearing loud fighting noises from the other side.
"This day seriously sucks." Howard mutters and puts on his goggles, then he goes to the control panel and shares a last glance with me. I nod slightly, signaling him to press the button and he first struggles but then he does as I say.
The needles of the metal pads bore into my arms and as if it's not enough, I feel how the blue, cold liquid runs through my arms into my veins, I literally feel the cold spreading through my body. I clench my teeth, trying to hold back any pained noises and squint my eyes. The pain freezes my blood but then I feel a sudden burning in my skin as I widen my eyes. The cellular change. It's like every single cell would explode.
The capsule gets closed and I know what's coming now, the actual worst part because vita radiation seriously doesn't sound very nice. My view is pretty bad since the glass of the capsule is thick and it's dark here but I can recognize how Howard is spinning something. The darkness gets replaced with an awful brightness and I suddenly feel an unbearable, painful heat, like I'd be standing on fire. The ache burns into my skin and a loud scream escapes my mouth. Squinting my eyes, I try not to cry although it hurts so bad that it feels like I'm getting burned alive.
Steve could survive this, I need to survive too. For him and Bucky. Bear the pain, don't be weak. Everyone's counting on me.
"Eve!" Howard's voice gets mixed with a loud crash and the capsule suddenly dangles, another heat hits me and I can't prevent a cry. This feels different, more painful and torrid, like a power line would run through my whole body. An electric sibilance booms in my ear, making me feel dizzy.
The machine gets turned off and I slowly open my eyes, still weak and exhausted. I'm sweating and my breath is unsteady, I may be about to faint. The heat and brightness disappears but instead of the darkness, there's still a light in the capsule. A blue, strong light. My eyes follow the blue trace and my heart skips a beat when I suddenly see a sizzling electricity between my fingers. My jaw drops in shock and I stare with widened eyes at my hands, my heart now races like hell. My hands are producing electric shocks. How is that possible?!
"Are you okay?!" Howard yells and opens the capsule, noticing what's going on with my hands and my shocked expression, he presses his lips together. "Eve, something went wrong."
"Oh, really?" I glance at him with narrowed eyes, sarcasm lies heavily in my voice. "I thought it was common that the human body produces electricity. What the hell happened?!"
"A lightning suddenly hit the building which means also the capsule during the vita radiation. I really have no idea how that could happen and how you could survive getting struck by a lightning and I'm actually smart." He mumbles and looks at me with amazement. "But it is a miracle. How are you feeling?"
"Not gonna lie, pretty roasted like a toaster. I feel slightly dizzy." I admit and he's carefully removing the belt but the electric sibilance causes him to pull back his hand with a groan. An uncomfortable fear spreads over my chest and I look at his wounded hand. "Sorry, does it hurt bad?"
"It's sweet that you care so much about me." He smirks teasingly, indirectly telling me that I shouldn't feel guilty. "Your slap in my face hurt more."
"I'm still mad at you but also sorry for this." I sigh, removing the belt myself. The sound of the electricity tortures my mind and everything seems to go black when I stand up and try to walk.
"Careful." Howard puts my arm around him to support me while Mr Jarvis helps me on the other side. I barely have the strength to walk myself, what is wrong with me?
"Stop! Before I could hurt you- "
"Eve." He interrupts me, frowning. "Didn't you notice? Your hands stopped producing electricity. Look."
"Really?" I glance at my hands and they in fact stopped it. Maybe it was just a secondary effect from the lightning and wouldn't last. "Oh, y-yeah, right. But why do I still hear it?"
"What're you hearing, Miss Farrell?" Mr Jarvis and Howard put me down on the chair and I rest my head on my hands, the sound blends with the shots and screams from outside. My head is about to explode, the pain in my mind weakens me.
"The electric sibilance. I hear it in my head and it's killing me." I close my eyes and breathe heavily, trying to ignore the fizzle. Why did it have to go wrong? I wanted to be stronger, instead it feels like I'm going insane.
"We've got support!" The soldier lets us know. "Most of the Hydra agents are taken down on the corridor. We have to leave now if we want to get out of here alive, before more are coming!"
Howard looks back to me, his brown eyes are filled with sympathy while he grabs the bag with items. "I promise that I'm gonna take care of you, okay? The lightning weakened you, I'm sure that you'll feel the strength afterwards. In fact, you look more athletic and muscular now. But we first need to get out of here alive."
"Okay." I nod weakly and force myself to stand up, mentally thanking Howard for the appeasing words. The soldier motions Mr Jarvis to take a gun and help him while Howard and I should follow them. Then we open the door and it looks like in a nightmare. Bullets fly around and bodies lay dead on the ground, it's hard not to get lost.
"Follow me!" The soldier leads us to the elevator, shooting our way free and a few more surviving SSR agents join us. I can't think clear enough to be scared, I'm not even fully conscious. My hands are placed on my temples, trying to get rid of that dolorous noise in my head.
Arriving at the library, we fight our way through, some are falling, some are succeeding at taking down our enemy. It's a wonder that neither Mr Jarvis nor Howard and I have got shot yet. My breath steadies and I start feeling better although my head still aches like hell. We make it out of the building but not even 200 meters away from us, a grenade goes off, leaving an incredible explosion. My ears are buzzing and deafen me for a second, the ground is shaking.
"Get back!" Someone shouts and shoves us behind the building. I fall down to the ground and frown. The earth is dry. It's weird that it didn't rain, it usually rains when there's a storm.
"Come on, Eve!" Howard grabs my arm and gets me up, pulling me behind the building. The rest of us arrive and we stay there, another bomb explodes. I cover my ears with my hands and press my lips together. The fear takes completely control over me, I can't stop shaking and start slightly panicking.
"You stay here!" A soldier commands and leaves with the half of the SSR agents to go to the field and fight although their chances are low. We have no bombs and barely weapons, we're also outnumbered. More bombs go off and I flinch every time the awful blasting is heard. The air suddenly gets tight and I gasp, being overstrained with the sound. Make it stop, please, make it stop, I pray to no one specific.
"Eve? Hey, Eve! Try to calm down, okay?? Hey, look at me!" Howard notices my anxiety but my ears feel numb and he shakes me slightly, forcing me to open my eyes. "Calm down, try to calm down! You need to breathe. You survived the experiment, you survived a damn lightning strike, so you'll also survive this, okay?"
I force a nod and try to catch my breath, even though the painful screams of the dying soldiers and bombs make it difficult. I dare a look at the fight and see how many people are dying which is why, I immediately look away.
"Crap." Howard curses under his heavy breath, clenching his teeth. "How should we win this?"
I look down at my hands when I feel a little prickling between my fingers and see that the electricity is back. How is that possible? How can this be real and why can't I be helpful? I want to be stronger, not terrified. The project is my family's legacy, I was born for this, that's why I'm even in this world. Just minutes ago, I went through horrible pain, I also trained a whole month for and everything would be for nothing. People are dying right now because I don't do what I'm supposed to do.
"I'm just here to offer you the opportunity to help the country, the whole world. The decision is up to you."
"The real aim of the serum is to strengthen the weak ones as well, it's supposed to work as a cure."
"They always defended and protected me because I was too weak to do it myself. Now it's my turn, I owe it to them to become strong."
"I'll forever love this scar. It just proves how caring and strong you are. You didn't do anything wrong. Don't feel guilty, be proud that you had the courage to fight."
The courage to fight. Bucky's voice in my head strengthens me as I keep staring at my hands. The scar is gone, the serum healed it, instead the electric shocks still run through my hands. I've become more than just a super-soldier. I've got abilities, the ability to produce electricity and to be stronger than ever. I swallow my angst and stand up.
"What are you doing? Get down." Howard exclaims but I immediately start running towards the field, acting rather impulsive than smart. "Eve! What are you doing?! Eve!!!"
I completely ignore his screams and attempts to make me stay, I just pass the soldiers from our side and avoid the bullets and bombs. Adrenaline shoots through my body, strengthening me and I stop in front of the Hydra agents, recognizing their symbol on their uniform. They don't hesitate and aim their guns at me but I just feel the electricity running through my fingers. Now I know what to do, it's an impulse.
I power up and attack, firing a massive blast of electricity at them. They all get struck by my electric shocks and fall down while more Hydra agents are about to shoot me down but I am faster, shooting more electricity bolts at them. A loud and enraged scream leaves my mouth while I take them down, one by one. The world around me fades out, just the lightning inside me exists. Then everything goes black.

I slowly open my eyes and wake up in a hospital room, at least it looks like that. The bright light and the smell of hygienics are in the air. Sitting up from the bed, I hope that I'm not a hostage in some Hydra facility but then Howard walks in with a bright smile on his face. A sigh of relief escapes my lips, glad that he seems to be alright.
"Look who's awake. Miss Electricity, the one who saved us all." He grins and sits down on my bed. "Don't worry, we're safe in a private hospital in London, this time in the SSR headquarter."
"What- what happened? Is Jarvis okay too?" I ask concerned, still not believing what I did out there. I was a normal girl from Brooklyn and then I was suddenly taking down german soldiers, surrounded by bombs.
"Yeah, he's fine, just drinking his tea right now. You basically defeated Hydra's group and saved us but then you passed out for a whole night, probably exhausted from the power you used which is still incredible and really a miracle." He tells me excitedly, the scientist speaking out of him. "How are you feeling?"
"Actually good." I half smile. The sibilance in my head is gone, maybe my body accepted the electricity inside me. "But... about my new ability. What are we gonna do?"
"A new operation." He says enthusiastically. "We're gonna test your new power and also help you to control them better. Since Project Reborn succeeded, I thought of a new name, more like a new name for you because it's better if you remain unknown for Hydra for the time being."
"Sounds good." I nod, agreeing. Pride spreads over my chest because of my success, I became stronger. "Any ideas?"
"What do you think of Voltricity?"
