Night drives

Kinkade tossed and turned in his bed as his team was sleeping/snoring. He felt restless, he wasn't tired but he also didn't want to sleep, he wanted to go somewhere.

He growled sitting up but smacked his forehead on the ceiling as he got up to fast. Shit.

It's been so long since he's been restless, usually he sleeps fine due to training, missions, keeping himself busy every waking moment. But he just couldn't sleep. It bothered him.

Kinkade reached for his camera with a small sigh as he always enjoyed looking back at the pictures he had. The memories he could keep with him right there. He was glad he went with joining the garrisons.

But when he landed on a specific picture it was reminded him of the first few nights when he was a new cadet, missing his family.

It was a picture he took of his two little sisters, one was now seven and the other was eleven, they where playing in the backyard as their mother was reading in the grass as his father was snoring in a lawn chair after a long night at work. His mother was a manager at the towns library as his dad was a cop. Kinkade felt like his father sometimes, but listened to his mother's voice in his head. To look at the bigger picture to protect your family.

Some part of the reason he got into photography but also a main reason he went into the garrisons, it was a bigger picture to protect his family, and now he was the big picture to protect his home.

He didn't know if they where alive... they're not part of the refugees here.

Kinkade sighed going through the pictures as he remembered the night of the meteor shower and landed on the first picture of lance. It's been a week since he met the paladin. He hasn't spoken a word of anything relating to him, nothing to Veronica, the paladins being on earth, allies, the defense system they could have. Lance seemed like he was already in trouble for even coming to help him.

Did lance ever speak of him to his own team?

"Will I see you again?"

"I hope so, you seem pretty cool,"

He pursed his lips debating about his options. Maybe he could see lance again? It was nice talking to someone you didn't know or knew you, and lance seemed to share a passion for his family kinkade understood, but never mentions to anyone.

He got up, out of the bed, he kept on his white tee shirt but grabbed his kaki cadet pants and threw on the boots with it in case of an attack, so he grabbed a communicator as well, including his gun.

He didn't sneak out often, but he wanted to still be prepared.

———

Kinkade drove to the middle of the desert as he recognized a cliff a mile away. He hoped that was the one.

He flashed his head lights three times and waited getting out of the vehicle.

Kinkade waited for a few minutes and did it again hoping he didn't look to stupid.

But he felt ridiculous and disappointed seeing it didn't work.

"What are you doing?" A voice said next to him.

Kinkade let out an embarrassed screaming cry as he jumped away and fell in the dust. A playful laugh echoed as kinkade saw it was lance smiling at him.

"Hey stranger," lance teased.

He offered kinkade a hand up as the darker man grasped the tan teens hand and was pulled up. Cosmos came over sniffing him curiously but didn't seem threatened by him.

"Sorry to scare you before, saw your lights flashing," lance quirked an amused brow at him.

"Took a drive, seemed like a familiar area," kinkade played it cool as he rubbed the back of his neck.

"Lucky you im on night shift tonight," lance crossed his arms laughing.

"I guess so," kinkade smirked.

"So what brings you out to the desert once again? Any cool meteors again?" Lance got on top of the hood of the vehicle again.

"Actually I snuck out, I couldn't sleep," kinkade joined him and lance raised an eye brow again.

"An MFE pilot sneaking out? Hm," Lance smirked.

"Why do you say it like that? I've heard many cadets snuck out before the war, I never did before becoming an officer," kinkade explained softly and lance pursed his lips looking mischievous.

"Yea I hold that record," lance winked at him.

"Got caught a few times but hold the record for how many times I didn't," he chucked and kinkade smiled silently.

"So that's why they're strict on it more?" Kinkade teased back.

"Well I didn't think it'd be as much as a problem when we left," lance shrugged it off smiling proudly.

"Left?"

"Um... yea, it was actually me sneaking hunk and I out to go and have some fun... before joining voltron," he breathed a laugh and kinkade looked interested.

"How'd you do it? How does someone join voltron?" Kinkade asked curiously.

"We didn't really join, it more sucked us in, I saw pidge sneaking out and she actually heard of voltron through sound waves from space, the galra, maybe it was blue, but we saw Shiro crash and the garrisons took him, we broke him out with Keith, badda bing badda boom we accidentally found blue and joined the war," lance explained boredly and kinkade saw something that seemed to spark lance as he looked at him concerned now.

"Do you know anything about the Garrett's?"

Kinkade was surprised by the sudden change in the topic but shook his head.

"No, never heard of them," kinkade told him honestly.

"Do you know anything about them being refugees? Do you track names?" Lance asked again. It seemed important to the Cuban.

"We do, but the name doesn't sound familiar, I don't think they're part of our refuge," kinkade told him.

Lance sighed shaking his head. Hissing dammit under his breath.

"They're hunks family, Sam said our families were safe but it's really hunk and shiro's and my family we have to be concerned for, but shiros fiancé is the only one here, I don't think his parents are here," lance ran a hand through his hair and saw kinkade freeze.

"Takashi Shirogane?" He asked quietly.

"Yea, you know Adam Wyatt and him where together before he went to Kerberos," lance nodded.

"Adam Wyatt is dead,"

Lance spun to him wide eyes. "What?"

"Commander Adam Wyatt was killed in battle with the galra three years ago, he is remembered at the memorial with hundreds of others that died," kinkade closed his eyes. "It was a dark time when this war dragged earth into it,"

"Oh my god," lance covered his mouth in shock. "Shiro still thinks he's alive,"

"I truly am sorry lance," kinkade looked at him guilty.

"It's not your fault, I just... I just don't know if I can tell Shiro, I haven't told anyone about you I just..." He trailed off with a sigh. Lance looked at him as they shared guilt and dread in olive green and ocean blue eyes.

"Do what you think is right," kinkade nodded.

"Sam holt said we couldn't even go back as refugees, Allura and romelle seem to stubborn right now with hiding their altean qualities, coran is the only one that's being reasonable," Lance rambled slightly.

"Like I know Allura is a princess, and she's amazing and she should be proud of who she is but there's just some things she needs to do and as a princess I feel like she should lead romelle to do the same, coran will follow her to the ends of the earth, he's like a second father to everyone, but he adores her like his own," he continued but stopped noticing kinkade hasn't spoken yet.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to ramble, I can talk a lot sometimes," Lance gulped rubbing his face.

"Lucky for you I don't talk to much, I've always been a listener," kinkade nodded.

Lance laughed at him a little. "Well lucky me indeed,"

Kinkade listened to lance for hours and hung onto every word he said, smiled at some jokes and laughed sometimes as every one was sincere to the Cuban, he had so much to say but it was all genuinely important to lance, like he didn't feel like this in so long. Kinkade was always a listener which is true, but he could easily tell when someone just wants to be heard. How fast lance spoke and how excited he got over some of his topics. Kinkade intervened to comment and or add on which lance didn't mind at all, it just meant kinkade really was listening.

Again, it was nice for both of them to be with someone who showed the passion or to even care. And they both obviously cared.
