Meanwhile
Told from Luke's perspective
Well, I'm failing at this. Apparently I can't pump people for information for shit. I'll have to remember to put that on my resume. While doing my rounds of the, er, ballroom, I guess, I've seen Julia a couple of times. She's been seducing some of the more brutish and stupid of the human like demons. Haven't seen Alexa, though. I wonder why that is. Suddenly Julia pops up from behind me.
"Luke! Where's Lexlex?" Julia asks enthusiastically.
"I haven't seen her since we got here." I answer. "Any luck?"
Jul sighs. "Nah. If any of them had secrets, they'd have told me. But no one knows zip." She slumps into a chair.
"Well, I haven't even been able to hold a conversation with any of these guys for longer than a minute." I lament to make her feel better. "I wish Lex was here."
Julia lights up. "I have an idea! We can just think of what she'd say." She waits for my response, but I'm not going to initiate this. "Umm...Luke, that's sexist!"
I roll my eyes. "She only says that when there's a reason, Jul."
Julia frowns. "Oh yeah." She thinks for a second. "Oh!" She makes an overly serious and angry face. "You said guys instead of just demons. There are female demons, Luke! Respect them!" She turns back to her normal self. "How was that?"
I shrug. "Meh. She's not so nitpicky. Lex doesn't analyze things that much. She only points out things that are actually sexist. Not words like guys that usually implies a multigendered group of people."
"You're right. She's taught you well." Julia remarks.
"Well, since we're failing epically, we might as well take a break. Have some fun." I suggest.
"Yeah. Let's eat some mini quiches!" Julia exclaims, clapping like a seal.
We sit down at the first vacant table we find. "What's a mini quiche?" I ask.
"Oh Luke, so uneducated in the world of food." She pats my head like I'm a child.
"I eat plenty of food." I defend myself.
Julia snorts. "Not fancy food, Luke."
I cross my arms. "Well, you're not exactly proficient just because you know what mini quiches are."
"No need to get so upset. Here," she walks over to the nearest waiter bearing a large platter of what I can only assume are mini quiches. "try one."
Before I can agree or object, she shoves a mini quiche into my mouth. "You could've just handed it to me." I say with my mouth full.
Julia cackles. "But you like it, don't you?"
"Yeah, I do." I admit after swallowing.
"Ooh. Cute guy alert!" Jul squeals.
"You have a boyfriend." I point out.
"I can look at the menu, I just can't order." Jul explains. "Plus, we haven't agreed to be exclusive yet."
"He told you he loved you." I state.
"Pssh. You know that's not true. I'm still testing him out. Also I might be into polyamory." Julia retorts.
"Polyamory isn't a thing you're into. It's an actual valid relationship choice." Lex says, appearing from the crowd.
"Yeah, I know. I'm going." Julia leaves to talk to whichever guy she saw.
"Any luck?" Alexa asks, taking Julia's seat.
"Well, Julia fed me a mini quiche." I answer.
"So, in other words, your attempts have been uneventful. Damn" Alexa replies, bummed.
"Lex, what happened to your dress?" I inquires.
"Breaking and entering, potion making, and jumping on rooftops with a grappling hook." Lex answers cryptically.
"Um, ok." I respond.
"Chris is here. He's spiking the drinks with a potion I made. It'll make this process a lot easier." Lex informs me.
"Oh, Chris is here. That explains the breaking and entering." I reply. "Wait, did you break into Chike and Eli's house?"
"Keep your voice down!" Alexa hisses.
We sit in silence until Julia bounces back to our table.
"Hey, just an FYI, Chris is spiking the drinks for us to make this easier." I inform her. "Oh, and don't drink the punch or you'll die. It's poisonous to humans."
"I'm going to dump Rod!" Jul exclaims. If she were a pot, she'd be boiling over right about now.
"Not that is what I want for my ringtone." Lex uses sarcasm to try cover up her joy, albeit unsuccessfully.
"What brought this on?" I inquire.
"Well, I thought about what you guys said. He wants me to commit and love him too soon." Jul explains. She pauses, waiting for our response, but we know there's more. "Aaannnddd... I met someone!"
"There it is." Alexa nods, unsurprised. "Julia, it's been five minutes."
"Exactly. After five minutes, Rod wanted me to say I loved him. But Herman just wants to see where things go. He's really nice!" Julia explains further.
"His name is Herman?" Lexa asks. I'd jump in, but I'm scoping out the trays of food floating around the room. Julia nods and Alexa sighs. "Well, that's a step up from not even a name. You have to call Rod before-"
"Already done! Left him a voicemail." She notices that Lex still looks unsure. "Lex, I know I'm a bad flirt, and I have pretty low standards, but I do know how to take care of myself. I broke up with the last one, and the one before. I'm getting so much better at knowing when a thing is right."
Alexa forces a smile. "Alright, Jul. I trust you."
Julia jumps up and down and claps before running off again.
"There's a 90% chance she's going to end up heartbroken." Alexa remarks once she's gone.
I go back to eyeing the food, seeing what looks scrumptious. I hear Lex let out a little screech. Immediately I turn towards her to find that it was just her reaction to Chris telling her that he succeeded in his deed. She jumps up and hugs him, her hands around his neck.
"Yes! This will make a world of difference to the mission." Lex thanks him
"Anything to help." Chris replies, lifting her slightly off the ground and spinning her around.
"Hey, if you're going to do that, take it to the dance floor." I tease.
"Time for them to spill the beans." Alexa remarks as she pulls me by the arm out to the floor.
