Part 5
I caught a view of Peter's delightful smile as he weaved his way through the small crowd of people to my table, which was located at the back, near the entrance.
A few people shook his hand and gave him small nods of their approval of his act.
He quietly pulled back the chair that was across from me, and sat down in it, keeping his eyes on me. I felt my face get a little warm and started to worry about all my insecurities as he looked at me.
"I'm glad you came to see the show tonight."
I nodded and gave a shy smile, taking a sip of the coffee I had ordered and tried to remain cool, even though I was awfully nervous in reality. I wasn't sure what it was about him, but he made me feel like no other man had made me feel before.
"I really admire your love of music, you know? It's been a while since I've found someone who shares an interest with me."
I smiled, finally feeling brave enough to speak. "Yeah, it's a very important part of my life. You sound amazing up there, by the way."
He smiled, "Thank you. Maybe sometime, you and I could both be up there for a song or two."
Just then, his break was over, and he was called back up for his second half of the set. I stayed, becoming enthralled with his delightful rendition of "Cripple Creek".
He finished playing, and everyone applauded, including myself of course, who also gave a standing ovation. He bowed an endearing little bow; he looked so happy up there. He put his banjo away and I decided I'd wait for him instead of leaving.
A lot of the people were leaving, and the shop was going to close soon. I checked the time; it was pretty late already, about 11:30.
Eventually, Peter came out of the backstage area with his banjo case, and he seemed shocked to see that I was still there.
"I wanted to see you", I said. To this, he gave me a look, and his eyes seemed almost impish for a moment, then they softened and became the eyes I knew.
"Well, why don't you come with me back to my place? I've got some records we can listen to. If you want."
I knew I shouldn't; I had classes in the morning, but I had an impulse to accept the offer, so I did.
