Chapter 4
As I walk back into the house with the man trailing along behind me, I finger the pepper spray. But how to spray him? I ask myself. I lead him through the kitchen to the living room, where I open the cabinet under the giant flatscreen tv. Inside of the cabinet is a safe, where we keep our entire fortune.
As I press the number pad in the correct order, a sudden thought springs into my head. It's dangerous, but it could work. Once the safe is open, I reach my hands in and take out a handful of 100 dollar bills. I turn back to the man to see him gaping open-mouthed at our fortune.
As he reaches his hand out to take the money, I bring my other arm out from behind my back and spray him in the face. He falls backwards screaming, dropping the knife. Brandy backs away from him, a look of horror in her eyes. Everything seems to be going in slow motion. There is only one thought going through my head. Did I really just do that? The sound of sirens outside snap me out of my trance.
Sirens? I wonder. Who called the cops? Brandy is looking at me, bewildered, and I know she's thinking the same thing I am. Not even a minute later, three hefty cops come barging through our door with guns pointed at us. We stare wide eyed, and I realize I should probably put my hands up. Brandy already has hers up, and I stretch mine as high as they can go.
They look at each other with a confused expression on their face. Well, I can hardly blame them. It probably looks odd with when there's a druggie on the floor screaming and clutching his face, and two girls standing up, perfectly unharmed, even though there's a knife on the floor. As we stumble over to the cops, I feel a sharp, burning pain in my ankle. I scream and drop to the floor, tears stoning my eyes.
As I look back, dazed, I notice blood pooling out all over the carpet, and a knife in my ankle. "My mom is gonna be so pissed!" I yell hysterically. One of the officers shoot the druggie, and he suddenly stops screaming. His blood now mixes with mine on the carpet, but I hardly notice. Everything is turning black, but the last thing I remember before I black out is Brandy, running towards me with arms outstretched. And then the darkness consumes me.
