Sage
Deep in an enchanted forest, there was a creepy, foul smelling swamp. Living in the wretched swamp, a hob-goblin; named Sage. Shorter than most for his race, yet a kind hearted fellow. On this specific evening a sprite was fluttering through the forest and took a wrong turn. Her landing had been misjudged and ended up on the edge of the swamp. Her silver glitter wings now caked in a horrible smelling mud.
He heard something making noise near his home and crept over to check it out. He peered through the thick ferns and couldn't believe it.
"I'll be damned..a fairy." He mumbled. Despite being covered in swamp ooze, she was the most adorable thing he'd ever seen.
"Excuse me, I wish only to help."
"Who are you?" She called out frightened by the voice in the woods.
"I'm a hobgoblin, named Sage."
"Please come out of hiding." She said expecting to see a slime covered abomination. When he emerged from the shadows, he didn't look half as scary as she'd expected. He was short and grey like a chubby baby dragon. She could tell he meant no harm.
"Hello, Sage."
"And who might you be?"
"I'm Ginger, thank you for helping."
"Good to meet you.. Come with me to the caves and we'll get you cleaned up."
She nodded as he led them around the corner to a small and charming cave.
"What do you do here?"
"Other than live here, you mean?"
She nodded, feeling drawn to him, wanting to know more about him.
"I protect the swamp area, do a little of this and some of that." He said, then after a slight pause, added;
"What kind of fairy are you?"
"I'm a nature sprite."
The hobgoblin then got up and made two cups of warm milk, bringing them over; and handing one to her.
"How kind, thank you."
"You're welcome."
That moment of kindness sparked an unimaginable connection. Between the two. Something ignited , as they had a simple conversation that went on for hours, as if time didn't exist. When he'd noticed how late it had gotten, kindly asked her to stay. Accepting his offer, she stayed much longer. To show appreciation, Ginger helped take care of some of the other creatures around the swamp. Over the next several months the sprite and hobgoblin grew closer, still. Over the next few seasons their friendship had become more, as love did intervene. They spent day and night together taking care of the swampland and it's creatures, she enjoyed flying with the bats as he would check on the fish , snakes and toads.
She loved living in the cave with him, she'd have followed him anywhere. As the months flew by, they'd often spent the cooler nights by the campfire. He would tell her fascinating tales of other creatures, in far off adventurous places. She enjoyed every tale he had to spin. Her teal eyes would light up with delight. Over the next season, there in the swamp, the two were married.
As another season came and went, she discovered something unimaginable. She was pregnant. At first Sage didn't know how to react. He was excited to be a father, nervous, too. He wondered what the child would look like. Would it be more like a sprite, or would it look like him? He thought about it often, as time seemed to be in competition with a snail; as they waited for the child to arrive. The months slowly came and went until one night, Ginger gave birth to their son. He was perfect, their little angel of the bogs. She looked at the newborn, he'd resembled a little grey dragon with ice blue eyes. As Corrainder grew into a sweet adorable child, he resembled his father more.
The combination of sprite and hobgoblin, had made the first born gargoyle.
