Chapter 29
"Niall, do you want some breakfast?" Ruth came into my new room after she lightly knocked on the open door. I rolled onto my back on my bed and sat up to look at here. "I made some pancakes and bacon. It's all downstairs in the kitchen."
"I'll be down." I spoke slowly, lifting the blankets from body and swinging my legs over the edge of the bed. I winced because I was still hurting from the abuse I suffered from Louis' henchmen.
"I can bring it up to you." Ruth offered.
"I'll be down. Don't worry." I waved her off and got up form bed, stretching my arms over my head and wiggling my toes so that they cracked. "See? All good." I smiled, even though it was fake.
I had been in the safe house for a week now and everything worked like clockwork. Three meals a day, sleep at a specific time, and a few drills of what to do when someone tries to get in. Oh, and the occasional baby scare from Ruth. It was pleasant, but I was still unhappy.
I hadn't heard anything about Zayn. It was like he was a taboo conversation topic. I just wanted to know if he was okay. Okay, well, I knew he was okay, but that's all I knew. He definitely got shot and was hurt for sure and all I got from John was that he was okay. "Have you heard any news?" I asked the table, meaning Harry and Ruth.
"No, we haven't." Harry cleared his throat. "I'm sure John will call with some news soon." We sat there in a weird silence and finished up breakfast. Ruth said she would clean up, but I didn't let her do a thing. He was tired lately and I knew the baby took a lot out of here, so I cleaned up all the dishes and threw them into the dishwasher.
I was going to go back to my room and laze around for the rest of the day, but I was itching to go outside and feel the sun, but I was strictly told to stay inside and mostly away from the windows. There was a good suspicion that Liam was out there looking everywhere for me. For some reason he was obsessed with me. So staying inside and away from the windows was a valid point to be made. Even if we were hundred of miles away from the city I spent my alone years in.
I sat in the living room and watched the news. It was nothing but sad stories and weather. There was nothing about what was really going on. How the cities were run by the wealthy who exploited the weak. I ended up turning the television off and just sitting in silence. Harry had gone out to pick up a few things for the house. Ruth was cleaning up an extra room in the house for the baby. Time was fast approaching and they were staying in the house for a while, so there was sense in why she was setting up a nursery.
I wandered around the house for the first since I got there. It was a normal house that looked like all the others in the neighborhood. It was a little older with some marks of people living there before. It was weird living in a house like this. It was just.... normal. It was nothing like what I lived in when I was younger. That place was a fallen apart s.hit hole. And then there was Zayn's house. It was grand and sleek and just amazing to live in. This house was a typical nuclear family home with an attached garage, three bedrooms upstairs and a kitchen-living room combo downstairs.
I walked down the hall from the kitchen to the garage and noticed a small rope hanging from the ceiling. It led to a door in the ceiling for the attic. I yanked the rope and some dust fell down. I coughed lightly and then pulled a little harder until the door opened and the latter fell down. I looked up into the dark hole in the ceiling and contemplated going up there.
"What are you up to?" Ruth surprised me from behind and lied her hand on my shoulder. I jumped slightly and twisted around to see her. She was looking up at the attic opening. "Well that's a new hiding place." She joked. "You think anything is up there?"
"I don't know." I told her honestly. Why would there be things in an abandoned safe house?
"Why don't you check it out? I'll just be down here." She smiled. I bet Ruth knew that I was bored out of my mind. I was a teenager and needed some amusement after being locked up and hidden away. "Tell me if you find anything good!" Ruth left me behind to check things out. I gulped and took the first step up.
The attic was dark and dusty. When I inhaled I started to cough like crazy. Some of the dust even got into my eyes and I tripped forward., hitting something on the ground. When everything cleared up I saw that I had tripped over a cardboard box. The edges of it were a bit worn. I leaned down and picked it up. It was a little heavy, but nothing I couldn't handle.
"Hey Ruth! I found something!" I yelled down through the ceiling. After a few moments, Ruth showed up at the bottom of the ladder and gave me a lifted eyebrow look. "I'll bring it down." I carried the box to the edge and then carefully went down the ladder. "I think it's full of pictures." I said, carrying the box from the hallway into the kitchen. "It was just sitting up there."
It made a loud thumb noise when I set it down on the table. I cleared off a bit more dust from the top of it and opened the flaps to see that it was, indeed, filled with pictures. I pulled out the first few and saw that they were old war pictures of the same soldier. It looked to be around the Vietnam war era. The man was a little darker skinned with dark hair and dark eyes. He was in several pictures and then there was a picture of a family.
It was weird looking at the pictures of people I didn't know. And the pictures were old. Like my parents age when they were teenagers. Then the farther I dug into the box the newer the pictures started to become. There were family trips to places all of the world. Some from tropical places and other to places like Paris and London. There were a lot from London actually. It started out with a couple, where the dad looked a lot like the teenager in the family photo before. Then there was a baby boy with them with big brown eyes and dark wispy hair. Before I knew it, the pictures, one by one, showed the boy growing up and new babies coming into the picture. "These are..." I he'd the pictures and smiled. "Ruth, I think this is..."
Ruth came over and looked at the picture over my shoulder. "Oh that's-"
"These are pictures of Zayn and his family. This is his old home." I smiled and set the pictures down. Zayn was about my age at the end of them with a big grin on his face. He looked so young and fit. It was like I was meeting him for the first time again.
"Look at how young he is!" Ruth chuckled and then stepped back. "Oh." She said as she grabbed her belly.
I gasped. "Are you okay? Is the baby coming!?" I freaked out and Ruth only shook her head.
"No Niall. The baby isn't coming. She just kicked." Ruth smiled.
"She?" I asked excitedly.
"Yup. Harry and I are having a girl. We found out for sure a few weeks ago. At first we thought we were having a boy.I just haven't found the right moment to tell you. I figured you had your mind in other places." She rubbed her belly and giggled. "Harry wants to name her Francis." Ruth grimaced and I laughed. "But I though that Josephine was a much prettier name."
"That's a brilliant name." I rested my hands on Ruth protruding belly and I felt the baby kick. "Woah, that's weird." I chuckled.
Ruth and I went through the photos and laughed at Zayn's awkward teen years. We put some pictures to the side and thought that we could maybe spruce up the place if we were staying any longer than we thought.
"Alright. I'll put some lunch on for us. Harry said he wouldn't be back until later. "We both jumped when the front door started to unlock. Ruth looked over at me and nodded her head towards the closet where there was a hiding place in the back part of it. I quickly got up from my seat at the kitchen table and ran for the closet. I shut the door behind him and listened closely to the noises outside. Ruth was sure Harry wouldn't be back until much later in the day and there was no notice that anyone else was coming to our house that day. I crept deeper into the closet, behind some coats and boxes.
"Niall, you can come out." I heard Ruth's voice muffled trough the door. "False alarm it's Harry. And he's brought some guests with him." I could hear her smile in her voice. I stumbled out of the closet to find Harry and Ruth in each other's arm, staring across the room. I turned the corner and saw them standing there. John was holding him up. He was bandaged and his arm was in a sling. He looked like hell, but was heaven to me.
Tears of joy slipped down my cheeks as I threw myself at him. He grunted. "Hey, watch my, well, everything." He told me with a weak chuckle. "I'm sorry I took so long to get back to you, but I'm here, Niall."
I cried and smiled into his chest and he wrapped his good arm around me. "You're here. That's all that matters. You're here, Zayn, and now it's my turn to take care of you."
