Chapter 17
I don't know whether I was shocked or sick to my stomach. I stared around the open room, all the furniture in the living room had been moved out, and watched as, one by one, guests started to avert their eyes. I gulped and stood as straight as possible, staying close to Zayn just like he told me.
That was the only way I would get through the night. I felt like if I were allowed to walk freely I would be in big trouble.
As Zayn made his way down the rest of the stairs, so did I. I wanted to grab his hand again and squeeze it to let him know that this was all a big mistake, but I sucked it up and just stared at his back as we made our way through the crowd.
Zayn was showered with compliments and congrats on accomplishing another year of life. People patted him on the back and when we came to a stop, some people stepped back away from me. Most of whose faces I knew from meeting them before.
"Ah, Niall. I want you to meet a very good friend of mine." Zayn suddenly turned to me and urged me forward. In front of Zayn was this equally beautiful man who had beautiful green eyes and dark hair. He looked at me in surprise and then smiled. Alright, I hadn't slept with this guy. Thank god. "Matt, meet Niall. Niall, meet Matt." I reached my hand forward and he took it, shaking it lightly.
"Nice to meet you." I half muttered, looking back and forth between Zayn and his friend. "Are you enjoying the party so far?"
"The night is still young." He toasted his glass of champagne into the air. I nodded, smiling at him. He seemed nice enough and Zayn was very easy going around him. It helped lighten the mood in the room and helped me forget the people staring at me. Zayn and Matt chatted back and forth for a while before I was pulled back into the conversation. "So Niall, what do you do?"
I froze for a moment, but then Zayn nudged me with his elbow and I spoke up. "Oh, I'm a student. I'm just visiting Zayn while I'm on break." Wow, that was a good one. I mean, I would be a student if I wasn't a prostitute.
"High school?" Matt asked.
I froze again. "Uh-"
"Heh, funny Matt. Niall is in college. Freshman year. That right, Niall?" Zayn cupped my shoulder in his hand and squeezed. I nodded frantically. I had told Zayn and basically everyone else that I was eighteen, even though I was only sixteen. I let out a nervous chuckle and then grabbed the nearest flute of champagne that passed by on a tray.
I drank it quickly while Zayn and Matt continued talking about old times and laughing with each other. I wanted to run and hide in my room upstairs, but I had to stay by Zayn's side. I even thought about excusing myself to the bathroom, but that wouldn't work either. I was too far from the bathroom and too many familiar faces stood in my way.
"Well, I'll talk to you in a bit, Matt. Other guests want a piece of me too, you know?" Zayn shrugged, holding a glass of something in his hand. He gulped it down greedily and then placed his hand on my lower back, guiding me around the room with him as he said hello to more guests. Thankfully, we only went up to about two of my clients and they tried their best not to be awkward.
After a while Zayn made another toast to start the party for real this time. The music picked up and people were dancing around. Some of the older guests had said their goodbyes and left. Only the young adults around Zayn's age stayed. Even Charles disappeared for the night. I had lost sight of Naomi not far into the party as well.
"How are you doing?" Zayn asked, another drink in his hand. "Are you having fun?" He asked, standing close to me as we stood in the kitchen where less people were standing.
"Yes." I said almost robotically, watching Zayn gulp down yet another drink.
"Please don't lie." He frowned. I shook my head and he leaned in to the point where I could smell the liquor on his breath. "I hate it when people lie to me." He stood back and placed his empty glass down on the counter top.
"Really, I am enjoying myself. I'm just tired, s'all." I looked away from Zayn, but he grabbed my chin and gently turned my face towards him. "Z-Zayn?" I looked up into his alcohol hazed eyes.
"God you're just beautiful." He went to lean in and give me a kiss, but I pushed on his chest, keeping him at bay. I loved that he was praising me, but he was drunk and I knew that he didn't want his guests to know that we weren't , in fact, cousins.
"Let's dance." I told Zayn and he nodded.
"Yes, dancing sounds great." Zayn led me out of the kitchen and into the open space where a lot of people were dancing and drinking to the music. Zayn had somehow been handed a new drink that he was thirstily drinking down. I knew he was getting drunk and I didn't know what that meant for me. He grabbed my arm a bit roughly and I winced. Zayn's lax face hardened and he started to apologized profusely. " I didn't mean to. I'm sorry." He said, letting go of me and taking a step back.
"It's okay." I told him, rubbing my arm until it felt normal again. "Come on, let's just dance." I figured that if most of the people in the room already knew who I was and what I did for a living, they wouldn't mind me dancing with my current client. I bet they all knew what was up. And when I turned to have my back against Zayn's chest, I saw Liam staring right at me with a murderous look in his eyes.
I felt Zayn's hands on my hips as we swayed back and forth to the music. I turned around to face him and we dancing around each other. The crowd around us was pulsating and the music seemed to have gotten louder. I somehow got a drink into my hand and so did Zayn. When he downed his, I did the same with mine. This was the first time I was actually drinking to the point where I could feel it. My limbs felt heavy and my face felt like it was drooping. It was an odd feeling, but I was giddy and excited at the same time.
I danced with Zayn a little more and the night actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was actually having fun and not giving a damn about the others in the room. Though, I was concerned as to where Liam had gone. I had been so focussed on Zayn that I hadn't paid much attention to anyone else.
When I turned back to Zayn he had been pulled away by a girl. I lost him completely when my head started to spin and I needed to go sit down. I found my way through the crowd and ran into Naomi who was grinning from ear to ear. She hugged me tightly and then took a good look at me. "Woah, Nialler. You don't look so good." She frowned.
"I don't feel good at all." I half burped, half threw up in my mouth. The taste was foul and my stomach churned. "I think I need to get to the bathroom." I told Naomi, rushing past her down the hallway to the nearest bathroom. She raced after me, moving people out of the way so that I could get there faster. She opened the door for me and a couple was inside making out.
"Get out!" She yelled. They scrambled with their clothes and ran out of the bathroom just in time for me to get my head in the toilet and relieve myself of everything in my stomach. I loosened my tie and wretched into the toilet. "Oh baby." Naomi cooed while rubbing my back. I couldn't stop puking and I felt worse than ever before. "It's okay. Just get it all out. I'll be right back with a glass of water."
I sat back, wiping my mouth and letting my eyes water. I tried breathing evenly, but my stomach still churned and I found myself head first into the toilet again. Naomi had left the bathroom and all I could think about was where Zayn was at. I had failed to stay by his side and I knew he would probably be mad at me for leaving.
I puked one last time into the toilet before flushing it and letting my head hang over the porcelain. The door opened behind me and heavy foot steps entered the bathroom. A glass of water was set down next to me and I groaned. Then, a soothing hand rubbing up and down my back and it made me think of Zayn. Maybe Naomi had gotten him and he was worried. "Z-Zayn?" I asked, my voice hoarse from the bile that burned my throat.
"Hmmmm." The rubbing on my back stopped and the hand went up to the back of my neck and squeezed me roughly, jerking my head back to the point where I could see who had grabbed me. "Think again."
Liam was stayed down at me, hand holding me by my neck. If I moved he would break my bones for sure. If I did anything I would be hurt beyond repair. I couldn't handle any more of his abuse, but there I was again. Weak and helpless against Liam Payne.
