Chapter 14: Fine Get Off

Church goes by quickly and I watch as Jesse leaves his family to approach me at the church's weekly lunch with a bright smile.
"Wow do they have lunch here every week?" I question while looking around and he just plops down in the seat next to me which was origanlly Chris's.
"Yup," he reaches over and grabs a grape from my plate and I swat at his hand.
"They must really be bribing people to come to church then," I joke while taking another bite of my sandwich.

"Jesse!" Lukas, Jesse's older brother shouts from across the room and motions for Jesse to come over.
"Well I gotta go, see ya pipsqueak," he comments before taking one last grape and one last glance before he exits. I watch as his mother, brother, and little sister leave the building after speaking with the pastor and I turn back to my food, alone once again.

My mind wanders to Jesse and his family that I met for the first time today, well besides Lukas. His little sister, Hope, who's about five has quite the strong personality, kind of like Jesse's mother who sports a beautiful southern accent, and Lukas is well, Lukas. A literal replica of Jesse except older and more flirtatious if possible. Then that leads to his father who I learned is in a military base in Texas and won't be back for another 5 months and my mind flashes to when I first came here and Katie warned me about how Jesse's father is so high up in the military that his family receives death threats.

After returning home in a mostly silent car ride I say goodbye to Katie and stand amused as my brother watches her Jeep leave the driveway with a longing look. Storming up the stairs I leap onto my bed and think of what I could possibly do, I just finished a Netflix series and am still recovering from it's tragic ending, exercising sounds blah and nothing else really comes to mind.

I could be social. But that's so much work. But there's nothing else to do. So despite my arguing conscious I whip out my phone and look at the top number, Jesse. I feel something nagging at the back of my mind, why does it seem so weird for me to text him? I mean we are friends... I think, are we? Yeah I guess so. I just don't want to turn into one of the girls from the past, the ones that think he's hitting on them but really aren't, maybe that's why I never read into his harmless flirting.

Clicking his name I type a simple text and my finger hovers over the send button. Why do I feel so uncomfortable doing this? Maybe cause texting usually means flirting, and well Jesse is Jesse I mean he probably texts girls all the time. The thought for some reason sends my heart into flames and without thinking I press the send button. Whoops.

Jesse responds within seconds to my simple, hey.

Hey there sunshine- J

What up- K

Nm, can't believe the Kira Williams is texting me though- J

Oh ha ha very funny- K

Oh no I'm dead serious, too many of my friends complain you never text back ;) -J

What's that supposed to mean?- K

It means they're hitting on you but you don't hit back, duh- J

I'm starting to regret starting this convo with you... -K

Wow a girl's never said that to me :( -J

So he does text other girls then. Anger flares up in me for an unknown reason and I just decide to toss my phone to the side, well that was a fail. Netflix doesn't actually sound so bad right about now... ding.

Turning my phone over it reads, 'You alive or do I need to come pick you up?' -J

Yeah I'm dead- K

Well I guess I'll just have to come pick you up then :)- J

Nope never mind I'm alive and well- K

No response. Ten minutes later no response. Oh boy. The sound of heavy running footsteps meet my ears and my eyes widen as Jesse's 200 pound body is charging at me and I let out an ear piercing scream and in less than a millisecond he's on my bed and on top of me searching my face frantically.
"Are you alive? Do you need mouth to mouth recessitation?" he shouts holding my face and inspecting it. Yes.
"Jesse!" I shout looking down at his body as it hovers over me.

He just grins down at me as he stares at my dumfounded face.
"What?" I question feeling a smile tug at the corners of my lips. Jesse shrugs, his smile growing, "Nothing, you just haven't asked me to get off you yet," he wiggles his eyebrows and I roll my eyes while a blush creeps up my cheeks.
"Fine, get off," I retort but he just drops his arms that were supporting him so he's no longer hovering over me but actually on me.

"Jesse get off!" I exclaim shoving at his chest causing him to just bury his head in the crook of my neck all while shivers run up and down on my spine.
"Why would I want to do that?" he mumbles into my neck while his lips graze my skin.
"Cause my brother might see and think something else is going on," I grumble squirming under him.
"That's all?" he lifts his head up with a cocky grin and re-hoists his arms up so I can finally breathe. I take that as an escape and slide my body up from underneath his.
"Why, what's it to you?" I smirk, playing along in his little game.

His smile fades slightly and his eyes stay focused on my lips as they rest two inches from his.
"Jesse?" my brother's voice echoes throughout the hall and we both jump away from each other as if we were caught doing something we weren't supposed to, but what were we doing?
"Whatchya doing there?" my brother questions while approaching my room cautiously.
"Just making sure your little sister's alive, I heard otherwise," he smiles casually and my brother nods slowly, leaning on the door frame.

"You wanna go in the basement?" Chris nods his head out of the room and Jesse's ears perk up at that.
"Hell yeah!" he exclaims but Chris holds up a finger.
"But uh... I was going to hang out with... uh," he glances over at me nervously, "well Katie and I were going to go hang in like 15 minutes so we can't really hang long." Oh gosh.
"That's cool man," Jesse turns to me with a smirk, "I'll just hang with Kira for the day," he turns back to Chris who eyes him skeptically for a moment.
"Or you could just go home," I breathe under my breathe at his sudden need to be at our house. He has his own home and a quite large one at that.

"Ok?" Chris questions before turning to leave with Jesse trotting up next to him. Huffing and falling back onto my bed I pull out my phone once more despite it being the very object that always seems to get me in trouble.

So you're going on a date with my brother ;)- Kira

Did he call it a date???- Katie

Not exactly...- Kira

We're just going to hang out that's all- Katie

Yeah just hanging out alone together- Kira

Gtg driving :)- Katie

Within ten minutes the door bell rings and the sound of two 200 pound boys running up stairs meets my ears along with the sound of Katie's voice. I hear Jesse tease them by making a few unnecessary love making sounds before his footsteps echo up the stairs and I watch as his figure approaches my room once more.
"Looks like it's just you and me pipsqueak... in a house... all alone," he grins mischievously as I roll my eyes but nonetheless feel butterflies erupt in my stomach.

He plops down next to me, his large frame taking over half of the bed as his long legs reach the end of it.
"How do you sleep on this thing don't you just fall off?" he questions as I pull open my laptop.
"Well not everyone is 6'2" some people are actually normal," I remark as he scoots closer to me, wedging me in between the wall and him.

He keeps shifting uncomfortably until I finally can't take it anymore, "Do you want to go on the couch or something cause you're driving me insane?"
"Basement?" he grins and I let out a long sigh before getting up. We head down to the finished basement that my brother practically claimed as his own the second we moved in, a place I've yet to thoroughly explore.

Hopping down the stairs with Jesse next to me I see the very messy man cave with couches and empty soda cans along with half eaten bags of chips.
"So this is where you live?" I ask him with a quirking up my eyebrow.
"You likey?" he grins and I turn back to the mess they seem to love.
"Not in my top ten list of favorite places to be..." I trail off.

Suddenly his hand is on mine and my eyes widen at the sudden contact as I stare down at our intertwined hands as he simply leads me away from the stairs.
"Ping pong?" he asks still holding my hand.
"Uh, sure," I stutter while he gently releases my hand and heads to the other side of the table.

Well after about fifteen minutes of ping pong I conclude that I ultimately suck at ping pong and I swear on my life that somehow Jesse can magically cheat even though it's an impossible game to cheat at.
"You cheated!" I shout crossing my arms.
"How can you cheat at ping pong? You literally just hit a ball back and forth with a paddle!" Jesse exclaims.
"That's exactly what a cheater would say!"
"No it really isn't!" he laughs at my immaturity and I feel a small smile tug at the corner of my lips.

"I wanna do something else," I grumble while turning around to look around the jungle gym we call a basement for something to do.
"Pool?" he offers and I shake my head.
"I suck at that even more than I do at ping pong," his eyebrows shoot up as I say that before he mutters a small, "Yeash," and turns back to the man cave.

"Oh darts!" I shout and trot over to the small target before pulling the little jabby thingies out of the target.
"You know how to throw darts?" Jesse questions and I shake my head with a huff.
"Doesn't mean I can't try though," I take about ten steps back before sticking my tongue out slightly and focusing really hard on the center of the target before throwing.

The dart lands about a foot below the target and I feel a small frown form on my face as I hear Jesse let out an amused laugh.
"How did that happen?" I question before trying again and landing even further away, this time to the left.
"First off your stance is horrible," Jesse laughs from behind me.
"There's a stance for throwing darts?" I question.
"There's a universal stance for throwing anything," Jesse laughs while approaching me.

Suddenly his body is right behind me, I feel him kick the inside of my leg slightly so my left leg goes out, then he taps my right leg forward gently.
"Now you want to hold the dart like a pencil," he whispers lowly in my ear while holding the back of my hand, "Now draw back, and throw." And I do as he says, pulling back and releasing the dart that soars towards the target, landing about two sections from the center but on the target nonetheless.

Feeling a smile crawl onto cheeks I look up at Jesse who stands less than an inch behind me, his body occasionally grazing mine sending sparks of electricity through me. He glances down at me and lets out a small laugh, "Do it again," he nods his head forward and I pull back and toss it once more towards the target as confidence and concentration swarm my head. It lands on the edge of the target again, not exactly closer but not farther either.
"Your turn," I exclaim and flip around to face him, my neck craning upwards to meet his gaze.

He grins while grasping the last dart from my hand, keeping his eyes directly on the target and mouth parted slightly in concentration he flings the dart towards the target where it lands on the bull's eye.
"What did you go to the Olympics for dart throwing or something?" I turn to him as he wears a cocky smirk.
"No," he shakes his head with a small laugh, "My brothers and I would throw darts all summer back in Texas," he laughs at the memory and my smile falters for a moment.
"Brothers?" I question and his face drops as well.

"I mean... Lukas and I," he quickly corrects, "Back in middle school and stuff." An awkward and tense silence settles between us as I begin to wonder why he would accidently say brothers, before my thoughts can drift very far Jesse steps away from me so our bodies are no longer an inch apart but feet as he steps towards the target.
"Alright, by the end of the day you should be able to be better than me," he smirks as he hands me a dart. His body is behind me once more but now pressed more firmly to me as his hand wraps around mine with the dart in it.

Pulling my hand back with his on it he pulls our hands back and tosses it at the target.

Bull's eye.
