Recommended-Warbreaker

Warbreaker, by Brandon Sanderson is a stand-alone novel that will—literally—take your Breath away. Yes, yes, I know, the last nonwattpad book I recommended was also by Sanderson and all I seem to talk about is Sanderson but trust me. If you end up liking a book of his you're going to want to read all of his others.

Anyways. Back to the book.

Warbreaker takes place in Sanderson's cosmere, which means it's in the same 'universe' as all of his other 'cosmere' books (the Stormlight Archive is several of them). In this fantasy setting, yet another of his magic systems leave you Breathless. The plot will leave you gasping for Breath. The colors will snatch your Breath away—

Okay lemme explain my terrible use of the word Breath.

The magic system in Warbreaker revolves around this thing called 'Breath.' Breath is a thing everybody is born with and is almost like a six sense. You know that part of you that can almost sense when someone is watching you? Or sense when someone is nearby or walks into the room? Yeah, that's Breath.

When someone holds a lot of Breath, they cast an aura around them which makes colors... more vibrant. More bold. More... fantastic.

Breath in Warbreaker is what society basically revolves around—especially in the capital city  T'Telir of Hallandren, which just so happens to be where the story takes place. This is also where a group of 'gods' called the Returned live. They live off of Breath, which keeps them living and youthful. They are revered by the people and ruled by the God King.

Warbreaker takes place in a city full of color, and when you're one of the princesses from Idris, who follow a god who says color is bad, T'Telir can be daunting.

Especially when one of them is sent to marry the God King and forced to produce an heir. Why is this a big deal? Well, the God King is essentially immortal. Oh, and the Idris religion teaches that the God King is a sinful, demonic creature.

The princess isn't the only main character however. Lightsong, one of the Returned who doubts that he really is a god, is a humor-full character that I absolutely love. There were so many times where I laughed aloud and snorted. Because really Lightsong, really? *shakes head while smiling*

Another character is Vasher, a mysterious man who is also an Awakener (a person with a lot of Breath who can awaken organic material and give them simple commands). Vasher has his own secret plans in the city of T'Telir and that sword of his, Nightblood, isn't helping him stay inconspicuous. But I guess that sentient, childish sword who delights in killing and slaying evil can be useful. (Oh, you're confused by that sentence... go read the book and find out... then PLEASE talk to me about it because I literally have no one—)

All the while... rumor of a war against Idris is brewing...

So I realized that summary is kind of terrible. Probably has to do with the late hour (why on earth do I only update this when it's past midnight???)

Anyways, I'll provide you with the summary on the back of my copy of the book:

"T'Telir, capital of Hallandren, is a colorful city by the sea where gaily dressed crowds bustle through sunny streets and worship heroes who have been reborn by gods. Ruled by the silent, mysterious God-King, the pantheon is nourished by offerings of Breath, the life force that keeps them alive and youthful.

Exiled in Idris, the former royal family reluctantly betrothed a princess to the God King. Arriving in T'Telir, she finds both the city and the marriage are not at all what she expected. Her only ally is Lightsong, a god who is skeptical of his own divinity, who fears that war with Idris is inevitable.

Meanwhile, another new arrival in T'Telir, one who bears the sentient sword Nightblood, makes cunning plans based on the unique magic of Hallandren, which uses color to focus the power of Breath—plans that could change the world.

'A powerful stand-alone tale of unpredictable loyalties, dark intrigue, and dangerous magic.... Sanderson melds complex, believable characters, a marvelous world, and thoughtful, ironic humor into an extraordinary and highly entertaining story.'

Now if you go and read Warbreaker you're going to be soooo confused by that statement *dies laughing*

I promise one day I'm going to recommend a book that isn't by Sanderson. It shall happen... someday. I do read books that aren't by him!!
... even though to you all it doesn't seem like it...

...I'm actually going to be reading War Storm by Victoria Aveyard soon. 🤔

If you do read any of Brandon Sanderson's books... you know who first to tell... *wink wink* *nudge nudge*
