6. Writing Questions

This was probably the first tag I ever got.
goldblossom tagged me for some writing questions, so here are my answers.

1. When did you begin writing? [minus because of school/work/etc.]

I have some old notebooks with random ideas and stuff, and I started one story around 2012 or 2013, but I really started just three or four years ago.

2. What was the first book you read [or wrote] that made you cry?

I don't really cry at books that often, so I don't know. I don't think I've ever cried because of something I wrote, although I have wanted to (in a good way, because it was sad. Not because I thought it was terrible.)

3. Does writing energize you or exhaust you?

I think it energizes me, mostly. I get a good idea and have to write it down and then stay up really late doing so.

4. What is your writing kryptonite?

Short attention span, and perfectionism (a lot of rewriting).

5. Do you try to be more original or to deliver to readers what they want?

If I have an idea and I like it, I write it. I like to think I'm pretty original, but if someone has an idea for improvement and I think it's a good idea it, then I'll do that.

6. What other authors are you friends with and how do they help you to become a better writer?

Megan and my sister. They read my writing, and critique it.

7. If you could tell your writing self anything, what would it be?

Backup your notes more often. Besides that, I'm not sure. I don't really have any great writing regrets.

8. What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?

Um. Okay, I don't actually think I've ever bought anything for writing. So I can't answer that one.

9. What is your favorite underappreciated novel?

I don't know. I like the Inheritance Cycle, and a lot of people don't, but I wouldn't really call it my favorite.

10. How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

A lot. I think they're all less than half-finished, though, and only Autumn Evening and the Rabbin one are published anywhere.

11. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before you begin a book?

No. I don't really . . . if I need to know about something, I'll look it up then. I don't usually do research before I start the book.

12. What is the most difficult thing about writing a character from the opposite sex?

Emotions, mostly. And romance, just because it can get awkward.

13. How do you select the name of your character?

I have lists of names that I can pick from, I have a baby name book, I use random name generators, or I'll just come up with one off the top of my head.

14. Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?

Yes. But then I want to explain them, and I know that would ruin it.

15. What was your hardest scene to write?

Death scenes in general are hard. There's a kissing scene in the rabbin book, which I was quite a bit out of my depth writing.

16. What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Answering these questions . . . Maybe getting my ideas out of my head and onto my phone, written in a coherent way. And staying on topic.

17. On average, how long does it take you to write a book?

I've never actually finished a book. In my defense, I've started quite a lot of them. And I wrote about a seventh of a book during the month of NaNoWriMo, but that's not normal for me.

18. Do you believe in writer's block?

Whether or not you believe in it, it does happen.

19. Which one of your characters do you feel closest to? [out of any that you have created]

It varies depending on which book I've been writing more of lately, I think. Tangentially, is holding conversations with your characters in your head normal?

20. What is one piece of advice that you would give to other aspiring authors?

You don't have to be like everyone else. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good, and vice versa.

I can't believe I actually finished these. Finally.
