Chapter Two: First Visitations
Hiro rubbed his eyes bright and early the next morning. He changed and went downstairs for some cereal before visiting the hospital. Aunt Cass wasn't going with him this time as she needed to work, so Hiro made the trek to the hospital alone and in silence. San Fransokyo was anything but silent. People bustled around Hiro heading wherever they needed to go, ignoring him. Horns of cars blared and bells of bikes rang when Hiro crossed into the street without looking either way as he was distracted by thoughts. He scrambled off the crosswalk and leaned against a signpost out of the way of both car and human. The hospital was only a few blocks away at the point. Hospitals always terrified Hiro. He hated passing halls that reeked of illness and watching people suffer. It hurt his heart. The only thing Hiro cared about was that Tadashi was healing there. Tadashi smiled as his little brother parted the curtain of his ICU wardroom, "Hey there squirt." Hiro walked in and pushed any unhappy thoughts into the back of his mind and smiled for his brother. "Hey, Tadashi. How are you feeling?" Tadashi shrugged, "Meh. Okay I guess. The doctors and nurses were nice all night. I just couldn't sleep with all the interruptions. Then it's a lot to take in, waking up from a coma."
"Can't imagine why you'd want to sleep after a month-long nap." Hiro shrugged, "It is a lot for me to take in too, having you back and all, but it will all be okay after you get out." Tadashi nodded, "Gosh Hiro, I am so glad to see you."
"Same here, older brother. Same here."
They talked in between nurse visits and occasionally Hiro would step out to give him some privacy inside or if Hiro couldn't deal with the grossness of whatever topic was being discussed.
About an hour later Honey Lemon approached the nurses' station in the ICU ward and walked up to one nurse, "I'm looking for Tadashi Hamada?"
"Yes, behind that curtain there. I don't think anyone is in there right now so you can go ahead." The young man pointed. Honey went up to the curtain and parted it slowly, "Can I come in?"
"Hey, you came." Hiro smiled. "Of course I came, Hiro. I wouldn't miss it for the world." Tadashi looked over and smiled happily, "Hey, Honey Lemon." She smiled and her eyes watered at the sight of her beloved friend, "Hey, Tadashi." She choked on tears. Tadashi took her hand gently, "It really is wonderful to see you, Honey Lemon. Thank you for coming." Honey put on a gentle smile that revealed her absolute relief at being there and seeing for herself that he was awake, "You have no idea how amazed we were to hear that you were awake. We've all missed you so much. It's incredible." Hiro moved a chair closer to the bed for her to sit. "Sit, Honey Lemon. I've been with him all morning and am going to get something to eat. Maybe some gummy bears." The kid smiled before exiting.
Hiro went down to the vending machine to grab a soda and a snack. He couldn't wait until Tadashi could come home and they would be able to eat gummy bears and work on Baymax together. Of course Hiro would still go with everyone on missions with Baymax now and again. Hiro then paused and worried a little bit. What if Tadashi fought letting him go like he had with the bot fighting. Sure saving the world wasn't illegal but there was still inevitable danger. But this was somehow different than before. Now the nerd group was complete and surely the others would take Hiro's side as he was the one who started it all. Hiro wanted to give Honey Lemon and Tadashi some time together before disrupting the happy reunion and the dark haired boy went to read some technology magazines.
"Tadashi, the crew has missed you so much." Honey smiled sadly at the bandaged face before her. Tadashi nodded, "And I've missed you guys. Thanks for watching out for Hiro."
"He's really grown up since that day when you-" her voice dropped off. "I know." He gently rubbed her hand, "I am sure he has. I wish I could have been there for him though. Without Mom and Dad it was already hard on him, and then I went and ran into a burning building."
"Do you remember anything from in there?"
"Not right now."
Honey Lemon quickly shook her head, "I hope you don't remember." She closed her eyes as the scene replayed in her mind. Flames climbed the building. Hiro was hysterical when Tadashi ran inside and never came out. Then the explosion. The whole world spun in front of Honey Lemon's eyes. While she watched as beams and pieces of flaming debris fell in, she felt a scream rise in her throat. Tadashi's hand against hers broke her thoughts. Her emerald eyes opened to look at Tadashi's brown ones, tears bubbling on her tear line, "I-it was terrible, Tadashi. None of us thought you would live."
"I know, I know." Tadashi's tone was gentle and knowing. Honey Lemon tried to keep herself from crying but a few unchecked fell down her face. Then Hiro popped in, "Wasabi and Gogo are here." The two other friends came in as Honey Lemon moved to get another chair. She stood off to the side while the others had their own reunion. Hiro sighed, "Amazing isn't it?"
"A miracle."
The young boy nodded, "Yeah. Seeing him touching and talking to me feels like the bandaid being ripped off all over again. I guess you just work through it." Hiro shrugged. Honey Lemon put a gentle hand on his shoulder, "I should go. I have some more work to do before school. Thanks for letting me see him." The girl went up to give Tadashi a hug and waved goodbye to her roommate and her other friend.
"Glad to see you awake." Wasabi smiled broadly and took in the whole of Tadashi Hamada: long unkempt hair, a bandage wrapped around his head, a few IVs, monitors surrounded Tadashi in a jungle of wires, and the prosthetic laid by his side. "Glad to be awake. Not much has changed in a month it seems." Tadashi smiled and Wasabi chuckled, "I guess not. Although we really haven't done much in a month except work, sleep, eat, and repeat. Maybe a little reorganization of your basement in between."
"A little?" Gogo chuckled, "You labeled the entire room with white tape. I'd be surprised if Hiro can find anything without his "organized" chaos." She said using air quotes. Both comrades smiled as Tadash's laugh filled the room and lifted their spirits. It had been a sound they had hoped to hear again. "How's the bike, Gogo?"
"I had to put it on hold for something. I am pretty much just doing small projects right now," She explained and popped her bubble gum, "I am helping Honey Lemon use the flexibility of gum paste in some exploding elephant toothpaste bombs."
Tadashi blinked in confusion, "Isn't that...pretty random?" Wasabi shook his head, "No it isn't because-" but Gogo nudged him and gave him a look as if to say 'Stop right there.' "Has Hiro told you yet?" She asked.
"Told me what?"
"Of course he hasn't. Never mind, Tadashi." Gogo shrugged. Tadashi's interest was piqued and he really wanted to know what they weren't telling him. "Does this have anything to do with his bot fighting habit? He liked to do it and even a time or two we ended up in prison because of it. Maybe these odd projects you're doing could be used to soup his robots."
"No, he gave that up. He knew you didn't like it." Wasabi looked at Gogo, "Hiro is a good kid." Gogo hated seeing Tadashi beat up. Her brain knew that when you run through a burning building without any sort of protection you'll be very burned and scarred, but Gogo just didn't like the look of him sitting there in the hospital. It wasn't at all the Tadashi she wanted to remember. That Tadashi always had been moving, smiling, always fooling around with his cap and sweater sleeves, and just being...Tadashi. Tadashi was bedridden, exhausted, and frail. Wasabi noticed as well how tired Tadashi looked, "We should go. We'll be back later in the week okay?" Tadashi nodded and smiled tiredly as his eyes drooped. Wasabi followed Gogo out. Hiro met them outside the double doors of the ICU waiting room. "He was getting tired."
"Fred's coming tomorrow." Gogo recalled, "Make sure that Tadashi has a full rest. Fred has enough energy on his own." Hiro laughed, "For sure. He can power a bullet train all by himself.": The team laughed at the joke and more at the truthfulness of the statement before they went their separate ways. Hiro went back into the ICU room to watch over Tadashi. He was exhausted and collapsed in a chair. Both slumbered for a while until nurses and doctors came in to check Tadashi over. Hiro was curled tightly and undisturbed while the hospital personnel fussed around Tadashi's bed. Tadashi would slowly wake and try to answer all their questions in order for them to leave him alone as soon as possible. Once they did then he'd drift back to bed but the rounds would commence all over again.
