Chapter Twenty: The Truth

The next week Tadashi called an emergency meeting with Gogo, Fred, Wasabi, and Honey Lemon. The foursome went down to the garage space expecting Tadashi to be stuck in bed, but they were pleasantly surprised to see the bed was gone. The usual computer parts were all over the various desks and the beat up couch was still stuck in the corner. Yet, the bed, nightstand, and therapy equipment was gone. It was like Tadashi had never been there. Behind them the sound of heavy steps fell on the stairs, the door opened, and in walked Tadashi relying heavily on a cane. Each gasped in amazement seeing him standing before them. Up until only a few days ago Tadashi was broken physically, but today there was a new light of determination in his eyes. Their friend was whole again, complete in personality. Fred, the first to break from the daze, joyfully lifted Tadashi up, "Tadashi, you're walking!" he cried. Fred put him down and the others came forward to say hello. Wasabi gave Tadashi a brief hug, Gogo high-fived him, and Honey embraced Tadashi with a few soft tears. As she broke away a large bright smile of both pure joy and relief graced her face, "I am so relieved you're walking so soon."

"Me too, it was time," Tadashi smiled back at her. "Where is Hiro?"Wasabi asked Tadashi, pulling over a chair for him. "He's off doing some errands for Aunt Cass, but I really wanted to talk privately with you guys."

"About what?" Fred sat backwards on another chair. "These," Tadashi threw out on the table a few printed photos from various social media sites and newspapers, "You're in these photos and I want to know what's going on." Fred, Wasabi, Gogo, and Honey glanced at each other and didn't say anything at first. Tadashi stared seriously at the foursome. He had read up all he could on that particular day but there were questions that were left unanswered. These were the people who could answer them since Hiro outright refused. "What are those outfits? Who is this person?" He pointed to a masked figure backed by a black swarm, "and who is this?" He asked, pointing to a smaller figure.

Wasabi looked at Honey and broke the news first, "That's Hiro in the foreground. He's on top of Baymax. The man," he pointed to the other figure, "is Professor Callaghan. The suits were Hiro's idea." Tadashi looked hard in confusion at Wasabi, "Superhero costumes? I'm asking for serious answers here guys." Gogo answered next, "He's not lying." Honey interjected, "Professor Callaghan had access to Hiro's microbots and were using them to take revenge on Alister Krei." Each person retold some of the story, laying all the details out before Tadashi who sat there dumbstruck. His friends were superheroes and Hiro the leader. This seemed improbable in every possible way and yet here was the proof he had been looking for all along. The news articles, the pictures, the first witness testimonies, everything checked out. "Why would Hiro lie about all of this? It's amazing to say the least," Tadashi breathed in disbelief. Honey frowned and nodded, "Hiro wanted to protect you."

'From what?' He thought. There were too many different thoughts floating around. Tadashi knew it'd take days to absorb the story that had been laid out at his feet.

"Callaghan has been in prison and will be in prison for a while yet," Fred nodded, "And we've been quietly living as we used to, except when I take my fire-breathing monster suit out for a spin at the mansion." He chuckled, giving a fist-bump to Wasabi. Honey Lemon watched Tadashi's eyebrows furrow and mouth turn downward in that way when he'd be thinking very deeply about something. He seemed to be removed from the present and deep in thought. Tadashi couldn't quite make sense of his feelings about the story. He was disappointed that the professor he looked up to almost as a father had stooped so low, but what bothered him most was that he had to find out the truth from a third party source. Hiro, his own brother, refused to trust him. Tadashi had a few last questions for the troop and then ended the discussion by asking one last thing, "Why did you all agree to keep this from me?"

Fred began, "Hiro thought it'd help you get better faster. You could focus on healing instead of worrying." Gogo agreed, "Hiro only wanted the best for you. So much has happened to all of us in such little time, you especially, and the last thing Hiro wanted was for you to worry about him."

"Hiro's a great leader, Tadashi." Honey smiled encouragingly, "You should be so proud of him. After this happened with Callaghan and learning you were alive, he channeled all his energy into creating your arm. He found a motive to create again."

Tadashi bit the inside of his cheek thoughtfully, "Thank you for watching out for him." He slowly stood up and moved around to give them each another hug. He started towards the stairs to go back up but Wasabi came over, "Tadashi, he did a good job. Hiro has his faults but he's a hero." Tadashi nodded, "I have to rest upstairs now." Tadashi's mind didn't allow him to rest, too many thoughts racing around his mind. Tadashi couldn't grasp it all. He had more to find out from the person at the root of it all. Hiro better tell Tadashi everything or Hiro would see a side to Tadashi that he'd never seen before.

When Hiro arrived home not an hour later he found Tadashi sitting in front of the computer inspecting Baymax's red chip. Uh oh, this didn't bode well for Hiro. He just walked by, hoping to be ignored, and haphazardly threw his backpack on the unmade bed. "Hey knucklehead," Tadashi spun in the chair to face Hiro, "how's it going?"

"Fine."

"Great. There's some questions I want to ask you, so sit." Tadashi got right to the point. 'He knows, he knows what happened. I'm toast,' Hiro thought worriedly. The fear was over how Tadashi would react. He could usually predict how Tadashi would respond but not this time, not with this topic. Tadashi neatly put the chip down and looked seriously at Hiro, "I heard it all."

"Oh? What about?"

"Don't play coy with me, Hiro. You know exactly what I'm talking about. After the fire you put Baymax and my friends in danger over some revenge story." Tadashi accused Hiro, "How reckless are you?"

"Reckless?" Hiro snapped, "You think I'm reckless? Says the guy who runs into a burning building trying to save someone when there was the fire department coming, leaving your own 14 year old brother behind to fend for himself. If anyone was reckless it was you!"

"Don't turn the blame on me, Hiro. I went to help Callaghan-"

"Because Callaghan is more important than Aunt Cass or me."

"How could you say that? Stick to the question, did you or did you not use Baymax, Gogo, Fred, Wasabi, and Honey Lemon to get back at Callaghan?" Tadashi emphasized each name, pressing his point further. Hiro scowled coldly, "I did. I was prepared to go after him myself but they joined me on their own."

"We can be glad they did. If they hadn't then you'd be dead. Who would Aunt Cass have then huh? Do you think she would be okay after losing both her nephews?"

Hiro felt rage absorb him, "This is exactly why I didn't tell you! You can't even be proud of me for doing the right thing!"

Tadashi stood up in front of Hiro, for the first time using his stature to intimidate, "I want to be proud of you, Hiro. But how can I be proud? You and the others were nearly killed chasing after a lunatic. Then you hide it from me."

Hiro tried to budge around Tadashi but Tadashi pushed him back on the bed, "You tell me exactly why and how you did all of this. It involves me so I deserve to know." The younger brother huffed but grudgingly began to tell his tale, "That night was the worst night of my life, Tadashi. I lost you in one moment and no one understood what it did to me. I didn't want anything that reminded me of you." Hiro went on to explain how he knew the bots were active, how they had narrowed down the search to Krei, and how Callaghan blindsided them as a suspect. Hiro felt the anger intensify again as he explained his hatred of Callaghan, "He used my microbots to selfishly save himself. Then he has the nerve to say that you going in to save him was a mistake. Callaghan was willing to sacrifice you to protect himself. He doesn't care about you and he doesn't care about me."

"Hiro,"Tadashi cautioned, "That can't be the whole-"

"Well it is, Tadashi! You weren't there. You have no idea how much I hate that man!" Hiro avoided talking about his failings as the team leader. More than once he had put everyone at risk because of hatred. That was the part of everything that he was ashamed of. Meanwhile Tadashi sat back in his chair and waited to listen to the entire story before even breathing, "And that's everything?"

"Everything." Hiro nodded begrudgingly.

"Callaghan paid for his crimes, you can't hold it against him anymore. No harm done to me so why stay angry?"

"I can and will stay angry at Callaghan as long as I live," Hiro spat out, "He's hurt you in ways you refuse to blame him for. You went in there on his behalf, lost your arm, was in a coma for a month, and couldn't walk for another two because of that man. You're expecting me to just forgive him? No, Tadashi. I won't."

Tadashi watched Hiro as he mentally processed all Hiro had said. Although Callaghan had been the reason Tadashi ran into the fire, Tadashi was alive right there in front of Hiro. How could Tadashi stay resentful toward Callaghan? "I was proud of you, Hiro, for getting into nerd school but you immediately went right back to being immature, using your genius brain for something someone else could have and should have handled. You graduate at 13 and since then all you've done is risk your own safety and the safety of others. First you bot fight illegally. Now you fight crime around San Fransokyo using Baymax and my friends to support your escapades. How can I be proud of that?"

"Immature? Escapades? I knew you wouldn't understand any of it! You didn't even listen to what I said. You're so focused on blaming me for everything that you're ignoring what we did for the greater good. God, Tadashi, if we hadn't been there Callaghan would have destroyed Krei and who knows what else. You're the one who has tunnel vision." Hiro stood up abruptly, "Don't assume that just because you're older, smarter, and bigger than I am, that you know everything. You are just as stupid." With that Hiro stormed out of the room, down the stairs of the apartment, and out the main door into the crowded streets. Tadashi groaned, rubbing his face in distress. Why was this so hard to just get them both on the same page? Everyday was a brother versus brother battle and neither ended up feeling like the victor. It bothered Tadashi that he was a failure at caring for Hiro. Instead of keeping them together as he'd promised his parents, he had driven his brother farther away than ever.
