Ch 23: Second Chance
Back at his house, Obito stands in his room, waiting. And damn, the anxiety is killing him.
He looks at himself in the mirror for what felt like the hundredth time. He can't figure out what to wear. I mean, really-- What do you wear to a… he doesn't even know what to call it. Casual hang out with your best friend? Or a... date?
A date? Obito feels his face flush at the thought. Hands shaky, he raises them up to feel his cheeks. They feel really warm. What the hell is wrong with me? He thinks to himself desperately, I really need to calm down.
He looks at the mirror and does a little spin. He tries to smile, but it just feels awkward. He just feels so nervous. And the question of the hangout/ date made it really confusing as to what to wear. After trying on many outfits, he settled on a casual dark blue grey blazer over a v-neck white shirt with black pants and a long black coat on top of it all. It’s a bit cold out after all.
He's dressed nicer than usual, and it made him feel self conscious. He never bothered himself with this kind of thing before. Obito isn't the kind to obsess over his appearance or care about how people saw the way he looked. All he had to do was wear clean clothes, look presentable, done. But now, he couldn't help but feel the extra pressure.
One thing he knew, they were going to a fancy dinner and he wanted to look nice. Nice for Kakashi--
Oh my god, he thought. It's a date, isn't it?
….
5 minutes to 7, Obito walks down the stairs to the living room. He sees his uncle playing a video game in front of the TV, as usual. This time it’s a new one. Madara is playing Resident Evil 7, the VR version.
“Holy shit!” Madara yells. “This chainsaw battle is lit!” After a few choice swears and grunts, he finishes off the boss and takes a breath. “Whew!”
As Madara’s adrenaline rush dies down, he notices a presence behind him. He takes off the VR headset and turns around to see Obito. Madara gives him a weird look and grunts. “What got you all fancied up?” he says in a sarcastic tone.
“Uh…,” says Obito, struggling to figure out what to say. “I’m going to go with Kakashi somewhere for dinner.”
“Oooooh. Is that so?” Madara says with a bemused smile.
“And what the hell does that mean?” says Obito, irritation rising in his voice.
Madara chuckles to himself. “I just thought it would take a lot longer for you two idiots to actually do anything about it.”
Obito narrows his eyes at him, annoyed. “I don't know what you're implying. We're just hanging out.”
“As friends right?” Madara starts chuckling even louder.
Rolling his eyes, Obito looks at the clock. It’s already past 7. His face grows slightly worried. Damn. If he's late...
Madara watches his nephew’s reaction to seeing the clock. “Is he going to stand you up?” he asks calmly.
Obito’s back jerks up in a huff. “Shut up. No, he's not!”
“Well, he better not,” Madara says to himself.
7:10--
“Goddamit! I'm just going over there!” Obito proclaims. He jumps up from his seat and stomps over to the front door. He swings the door open and Kakashi is standing right there.
“Wah?!” yells Obito, jumping back.
“Oh hey, Asshole! You're late!” Madara yells from within the room.
Kakashi waves at him from the door entrance. “Oh hey, Madara. Hi Obito…,” Kakashi says weakly.
Obito couldn’t stop staring; He was speechless. Kakashi looked... nice.
There he stands, lit gently by the moonlight, wearing a long grey coat over a nice dark blue sweater and dark fancy jeans. He has his green patterned scarf wrapped around his neck, and of course, he has his mask on. Kakashi looked so handsome standing there, even though he's wearing an uncertain look on his face.
“I’m sorry, I'm a bit late.” He chuckles nervously. “I couldn't figure out what to wear...”
Obito blinks for a few seconds, feeling a hot temperature rising from his neck. Then he shakes his head furiously, regaining his composure, and chokes out, “That's no excuse. Well, let's go! I'm hungry.”
“Have a nice dinner, boys,” says Madara in a sweet tune. “And Kakashi, have him back here by 10!” He yells quickly out the door as Obito swiftly shuts the door and locks it.
“Ignore him. He's just messing with us,” Obito grumbles.
“I see…,” says Kakashi. He looks over at Obito as they walk to his car. “You look nice.”
Obito coughs and covers his mouth, suddenly feeling anxious and flustered. “Well thanks. You too.” He turns his head away as he feels his face heating up. What's this feeling? He feels like he imagines a girl would be like on a first date. Except he's not a girl. And is this a date?
Once they are both in the car, Obito crosses his arms in front of his chest sternly. “Let’s go,” he commands.
“Where are we going, Obito?” Kakashi asks calmly.
“You owe me a lobster dinner,” says Obito, his voice sounding matter of fact. “You just have to decide where.”
Kakashi gives him a blank stare. “You realize I can't afford lobster.”
Obito keeps looking straight ahead, his face impassive. “That's ok. Doesn’t have to be lobster. You just have to take me somewhere nice and pay for me.”
Kakashi lets out a long sigh and says, “Geez, so demanding.” He starts up the car and starts driving.
….
On the way to the restaurant, it's quiet in the car. The silence stretches on, only the sound of the light hum of the car and the occasional turn of the steering wheel Kakashi made.
A feeling of uneasiness weighs heavily in Kakashi's stomach. He couldn't help feeling anxious and a bit giddy. Is this a date?, he thinks to himself. When it’s safe to do so, he looks away from the road and chances a look at Obito. He couldn’t see his face-- Obito had his head turned away and looking out the window to his side.
Kakashi looks back to the road. He does really look nice tonight. Although, Obito always looks good.
He smiles nervously to himself. Being in the car alone with Obito, he felt happy and nervous at the same time. After that night next to the bleachers, he thought their relationship, even though they were just friends, was ruined forever.
The past 3 days, were like utter misery to Kakashi. He laid his feelings bare, in front of the person he liked most in the world, only to be rejected. He couldn’t stop obsessing about it. He felt like a complete fool. So to regain some of his dignity and perhaps protect his inner feelings once more, he made the decision to accept the scholarship from the college in sweden. Better to lock his emotions away again, and get as far as he can from Obito.
But now here they are, going to a restaurant together.
I hope it is date, Kakashi thinks to himself. His heart flutters at the thought of it. But at the same time, the fear of rejection tells him not to get his hopes up.
They stop at a red light.
Obito’s hand moves over towards Kakashi and stops on the armrest between them. Kakashi’s eyebrows jump up as he looks down at it, his breath hitching. He looks up at Obito, who is still looking away. Unconsciously, Kakashi gulps and his hand moves on its own to rest on top of Obito’s.
Feeling the warmth of Obito’s hand beneath his, Kakashi’s brain fills with oxytocin and a smile creeps up behind his mask. He looks over at Obito who still has his head turned away. His heart starts thrumming happily. It felt like it was about to jump out of his chest.
The light turns green and Obito slowly withdraws his hand allowing Kakashi to use his for driving again.
…..
As they arrive at the restaurant, Obito gapes at the scenery of the place. Wow, this place is really nice. Italian?
Out of his peripheral, he notices Kakashi quietly watching him. His mouth is still hanging open, so Obito reminds himself to close it and stop looking so ridiculous. Must not look so shocked-- This is just a casual friend dinner; nothing fancy.
As they walk toward the restaurant, side by side, Obito feels his nerves start up. They’re walking so close next to each other. They get to the entrance and Kakashi moves to the side and motions for him to go in first with an elegant bow. Obito, amused by Kakashi’s gesture, grins and motions to him a playful tilt of his head. He walks in and looks around.
Wow. This restaurant is really nice, thought Obito. As the waiter leads them through the restaurant, Obito can’t help but gawk a bit. And it looks really busy. Must be a good place.
They get to their table and start looking over the menu. It’s quiet between them. Obito lets out a breathy sigh to fill the silence. Doesn’t really help.
Kakashi looks up at Obito, noticing his awkward demeanor. “Obito, what are we doing?” he says, calmly.
Obito does a quick glance up at him, then back at his menu. “We’re having dinner.”
“Yes but, this isn’t just a normal dinner, is it?”
Obito continues looking around the menu, pretending not to know what Kakashi is saying. He doesn’t want to call it anything yet. “I don’t know what you mean.”
Kakashi gives him a blank stare. “We’re having dinner at a nice restaurant, on Valentine’s Day?”
Dumbfounded, Obito’s eyes widen and he stops reading. He drops the menu down, eyes still wide and staring out into the empty space where the menu used to be propped up. Oh shit, that’s right. My birthday: Feb 10th , was four days ago. Today is Feb 14th: Valentines day.
“You really didn’t know?” asks Kakashi.
“Uh…,” says Obito, searching for words. “I don’t keep track of those kinds of things.”
“I see….,” Kakashi says and his eyes drift down to look at his drink.
Obito, seeing Kakashi’s reaction, feels a sting in his chest.
“Actually...," says Obito, keeping his voice aloof. "I’m waiting to see how the evening plays out. You never know...” Obito looks up at the ceiling above them, acting nonchalant. “It is Valentines day...”
Kakashi’s eyes flit back up at Obito. What? Is Obito saying this could be…a date?
Obito watches him, carefully fighting a grin from forming on his face. “What? Maybe I felt like I needed to help you out. This is how you court someone, Kakashi. You don’t just lead them to a shady spot on the outskirts of school and then kiss them while they are talking mid-sentence.” Obito says, his voice plain and casual.
Stunned, Kakashi’s eyes widen with realization on what Obito is hinting at. He locks eyes with Obito, who is looking back at him with a playful grin on his face.
Yes, it’s happening. Kakashi thinks to himself as his heart starts to race.
Feeling giddy, Kakashi feels a smile of his own reach his lips. But he mustn't act too overly excited. He can't mess this up. He's determined to make sure this ends up being a date.
….
After the impromptu Valentine’s Day dinner, they drive back to make sure Obito is home before 10. Kakashi walks Obito to his front door. Inside, they can hear Madara yelling very loudly at the TV, occasionally throwing stuff.
Now standing on the path up to his front door, Obito waits expectantly. Are we going to kiss? He thinks to himself.
He makes a quick glance at Kakashi, who is looking ahead towards the door. Obito can’t see his face so he looks down at his hands and notices he’s fidgeting. He flexes his hands into fists, attempting to stop.
After a few seconds of awkward silence, Obito chickens out. “I should go in,” he mutters and he starts turning and walking to the door.
Kakashi grabs Obito’s hand quickly. “Obito, I-- I.. want to try that kiss again,” he says in a shaky voice.
Obito turns towards him, eyes uncertain. “...Alright.”
Tentatively, Kakashi pulls his mask down, revealing a smooth jawline and his teeth softly biting his lower lip. Obito stares up at Kakashi’s bare face and his breath stops. He’s unable to look away.
Kakashi edges closer to him, carefully wrapping his arms around him. Then he leans down close to Obito’s face. He closes his eyes, and waits. Almost feels like forever.
Obito is stuck. He stares at Kakashi’s beautiful face, taken in by him and the moment, memorizing his features. Then, a small smile tugs at Obito’s lips as he closes his eyes and leans in to close the tiny space between them. He softly presses his lips onto Kakashi's.
As their lips make contact, a deep sigh flows out of Kakashi and his body melts in relief. He pulls Obito closer, tightening his arms around him and deepening the kiss. Obito smiles and hums happily, feeling Kakashi hold him tighter. He lets his mind go blank and he feels a bright, blissful feeling overwhelm him. Just feeling Kakashi's lips, his warmth around him-- He feels like he’s floating.
After a few moments, Kakashi parts the kiss, and presses their foreheads together. His eyes stay closed, but there is a serene smile on his lips. "Finally…," he breathes out, almost too soft for Obito to hear.
Obito's heart swells in his chest. He gazes at Kakashi, a couple mere inches away from him. He smiles, feeling a loss for words. Then, a bright little chuckle emerges out of him and he wraps his arms around Kakashi’s neck and pulls him close to lock their lips together again.
"Mrph," Kakashi murmurs in surprise. But then he smiles into the kiss and starts kissing Obito more passionately.
Their bodies press together tightly, basking in each others warmth. Obito feels Kakashi's own heartbeat fluttering in his chest. He smiles to himself, enjoying the sound, feeling each heartbeat make him feel more and more complete. He starts to trail his hands around in Kakashi's hair, relishing in the delightful silky feel on his fingertips.
“Fucking die, Mother Fucker!” Madara yells.
Obito squeaks and roughly shoves Kakashi away. Kakashi’s head jolts up in fear looking around, eyes wild.
Oh. Madara is just yelling at the video game. Oh my god, Kakashi thought. He had his hand over his chest, trying to contain his rapidly beating heart. He thought he was about to get murdered.
Right next to him, he hears a light chuckle. He looks over and sees Obito is laughing and smiling to himself. Kakashi smiles and starts laughing with him. Obito shyly looks back at him, then he covers his face with his hand and looks away. He is blushing furiously. So cute.
Kakashi reaches out to hold Obito’s hand. Obito looks down at their hands and smiles and looks back at him.
“How was that, Obi?” says Kakashi, his eyes softening.
Heart still fluttering, Obito looks down and squeezes Kakashi’s hand. “That was... a lot better.”
Kakashi’s whole body lights up, elated. He feels like running around in circles.
“Um.. I should go inside,” says Obito, who can’t seem to stop smiling.
Kakashi can't stop smiling either. “Ok, Obi.”
Obito doesn’t move away, and neither does Kakashi. They just stand there, still holding each other’s hands and smiling all goofy at each other.
“FUCK!!” screams Madara from within the house. Then there's a loud bang. Kuroi can be heard running away in shock, meowing. What is going on in there?
Smiling like a goofball, Obito says, “Ok I should go. He might end up breaking something important."
“Yes, you’re right.” Kakashi says, reluctantly letting go of Obito’s hand.
Obito starts walking up to the door, dazed and floating a bit.
“Mah… So turns out this was a date, hmm?” says Kakashi behind him.
Obito stops and turns around. The smile on Kakashi's face is divine.
Obito grins back like an idiot. “Hells yea,” he says.
Kakashi’s smile brightens even more and a blissful laugh rises out of him. He starts walking backwards to his house in a lazy relaxed way.
“Oh and Obi,” Kakashi says, with a sly smile. “I’m going to call the police soon. Madara is disrupting the neighborhood and its past quiet hours.”
Obito let's out a bright smile and laughs heartily as he watches him cross the street.
