epilogue

jeongguk felt empty, lost, abandoned for the next month or so. taehyung has not arrived at his apartment like he so desperately wanted him to. he was gone, and he had to suddenly face that change. yuggeom said it was for the better, and that taehyung was only weighing him down, but jeongguk knew yugyeom had seperate opinions on the boy. jeongguk knew in his mind that taehyung was a good person who got thrown into selling drugs by his parents, who had fled when they heard about the arrest of their son.

"it's good for you, maybe you can focus on school and get your grades up again. we don't have much money for college, and ever since you started hanging out with taehyung, your gpa dropped. i know you're upset, jeongguk." yugyeom places a hand on his younger brother's shoulder, a hand going across his brother's throat, just soothingly rubbing the scar, which had started to fade. jeongguk decided that he would use scar cream to get rid of the scar, he didn't want to see it when he looked in the mirror anymore. he wanted to restart, and now that he could talk, he could do that. maybe that's all taehyung wanted, was to hear his voice, and when he could, he realized his job was done, so he left.

at that moment jeongguk realized how selfless taehyung really was. taehyung assisted him in his time of need and helped him through his hardships. he held out a hand to lift him up off the ground when he needed it. he held his shoulders when things started to get a bit bumpy, when the journey seemed endless, he made sure that the experience was enjoyable. now, jeongguk stood before a mirror, one that reflected the man jeongguk had become, ever since that awful day they took his love away. jeongguk smeared the scar cream over his neck and set it back down. he'd restart, he'd become someone that taehyung deserved. he'd wait.

seven years later.

the wind was cold that day, jeongguk decided to wear a big coat. it laid across his shoulders as he walked along a bland sidewalk. he had just shaved his beard, but his hair was still a little over grown. he liked it long during the winter. jeongguk had met up with yugyeom and his wife for this occasion. jeongguk smiled as their young three year old offered him a big hug, which he took gladly.

jeongguk had dated, he wasn't too old, but young enough to not marry, he'd dated both boys and girls, but none of them felt the same as his first love. jeongguk wasn't going to taehyung's release to get back together with him, no. he was a different person, much wiser now, and he'd never fall into a rushed relationship as he had done all those years ago. he was prepared this time. this is what he told himself.

"are you nervous?" yugyeom asked, and his wife peered over, curious as well. jeongguk shrugged his shoulders. in reality, he was not sure if he knew exactly what he wanted. when taehyung came through those doors, he may not react the way he tells himself he will.

"it'll be like meeting back up with a long-forgotten high school friend. i've moved on, and as much as i loved this boy, i was only with him for a few months. that could never compare to the relationships i have had. fucks sake, i dated one of my ex's for three years." jeongguk told them, partly lying through his teeth. those years had been quite miserable. there was never a love as strong as his for taehyung. yugyeom nodded, holding his wife's hand and stopping at the gates.

"he'll come out here, with a few officers i'm sure. his sentence was longer than what he served. he was a good prisoner. from what i've heard." yugyeom told jeongguk, and he nodded curtly. his lips felt cold against the frosty weather. he tugged on the sleeves of his jacket.

a few minutes later, an officer came out, and in his left hand, clutched a prisoner's sleeve. taehyung. the boy looked much older now, a shadow lined his chin, all the way up to his ears. he gave jeongguk a warm look, and the officer let go of his sleeve. taehyung walked forward, his arms outstretched, but jeongguk kindly denied it. he wasn't sure he was ready for that kind of intimacy with him, not yet at least.

"jeongguk— it's been so long." taehyung breathed out. jeongguk felt weird, like he wasn't sure who was in front of him, it wasn't the same taehyung. this taehyung looked experienced, like life had flown by and he hadn't been apart of anything— which was the cruel truth.

"yeah, it has been." jeongguk murmured, looking anywhere but taehyung's eyes. those nerves he once felt for the boy had arisen.

"want to— go out for a drink and maybe, catch up?" taehyung asked, his eyes shining with a small bit of hope. he lightly touched jeongguk's shoulder— and jeongguk felt his skin bloom with excitement. it was that feeling he had felt so, so long ago.

and through all of jeongguk's personal strengths he had built up these past years, just one look into taehyung's eyes caused all of them to come crashing down. how could he say no? this man had helped him in so many ways, and here he was again, right in front of him. he was asking, no, begging him to be a part of his life.

and how could he say no?

"i'd-- i'd love that."

the end.
