They called me badqismat, unlucky. My own community told me I'd be better off dead, that I was a carrier of shame and unbearable to look at. They didn't know my story. They didn't know how I illegally crossed the border, witnessed the murder of my beloved father, went to my sister's funeral, and watched my mother pull every hair on her scalp until she withered away like a dead weed.
