Neo Tokyo is a city of dreams, orbiting in the skies above a terraformed Mars. And on it, Doctor Rin Porter waits for a ship carrying an answer to a lifetime of research. But for the former mercenary Martin Rawley, this is a job he's hoping to wash his hands of as quickly as possible. One quick delivery job, babysitting a cargo he hasn't seen, and doesn't want to see the inside of. But fulfilling this contract will require a mind far, far better prepared for understanding the mysteries of time, a mystery RIn refers to as FLOWER, the Fundametal Line of Origin Within Each Reality.…
For mostly immature audiences only.Preening pontificating from a pretentious pleb. (Updated whimsically)Take a tour through someone else's mind, as the author and terrible illustrator attempt to put the vagaries and soul crushing brutality of everyday life into just enough perspective to make the great issues of our time look as stupid as they are.I will, eventually, tackle great issues such as Microplastics, Hipsters, why Nuclear Disarmament is a terrible idea, why the world is overflowing with optimism, and other important issues. Now, I understand that Wattpad holds a degree of civility in its discourse that you rarely find on the internet. With that in mind, if you find a bit of incivility presents your point better, I don't mind. Being Wattpad, I suspect your meanest insults would sound like the kindest thing to ever appear on 4chan. -Will you laugh? I hope so.-Will you cry? I really hope not. I wasn't trying for that at all. If you do, I am sorry.-Will you send death threats? No, of course not. This isn't Twitter. Wattpaders have dignity. -Will you scoff and not read this because you were looking for One Direction fan fiction? probably.-Will you mock my doodling? I won't be offended if you do.-Will you disagree? No. You didn't read this. You were looking for one direction fan fiction. The new cover is courtesy of @stormythezebra…
Once upon a time, is how the old lie goes. For truth is light as leaves in the current, and time it ever flows. A mythpunk take on the old fable. A little town, a quiet village, where an inventor's daughter dreams of tomorrow's promise, devouring the literature of the French Enlightenment. Where a damaged soldier learns the greatest struggle could be to refuse to fight. And a prince cursed ponders surrender. This tale as old as time, this song as old as rhyme, has some darker notes to play.…
There is no night in the Everburning City. There can never be. ***** For four hundred years the Everburning City has withstood the advance of the life-strangling fog known as the Gloam. Its walls have held back five invasions, but on the eve of the sixth, the city's inhabitants know things have changed. Golems are coming out of the mist, and the bodies of the dead are rising at the Gloam's bidding. The city's last and most desperate line of defence comes in the form of the Crafters, individuals who can channel the power of fire, though they risk their sanity each time they do. The brightest of these valiant heroes are Tabitha a'Loria and her apprentice Gerald Reath. Risking their lives, they mount their airships, determined to save the last bastion of humanity - the Everburning City.[[word count: 100,000-150,000 words]]…
A shattered world, a sea of sky, and a thousand islands linked together only by the ships that sail beneath the endless blue. Where island kingdoms dream of empire, old allegiances fray under new stress, and old secrets are being unearthed. And into this maelstrom of change, the Ravens' Child is born. They are a clan of four now. Vincent Locklear, cast out of Volante's navy, and carrying the fate of the sky in his heart. Mercy Larkin, giving up finding her place in the world in favour of building it. Anita Hoffman, adrift by choice with one ear to the winds for the family she abandoned. And Leslie Madrigan, stripped of his title by family, and his family by pirates and politics. And in their new ship, paid for by a burden that has shattered islands, they will make their own place beneath the endless blue sky.Children of unkindness, the Ravens' child. And the legacy of unkindness is sorrow. Sorrow, and wings.(Cover art by @rentachi)…
Night marches on the Everburning City. The life-killing mist enshrouding the world, the Gloam, clings to the walls. Golems, towering monsters of stone, shake the earth as they march. And the dead rise again, puppeteered by some distant, titanic power. For Corporal Valen Redgrave, on the watch at the outermost walls of the City, the night marks the end of the military life he has known. The idyllic simpering of the watch has ended, and Valen finds himself the pillar upon which his companions' courage rests. For Gwendolyn Aranhall, stewarding a work rehabilitation camp for youth guilty of petty crimes, the night heralds the dismantling of everything she has known. As the Gloam claims the world around her, and she becomes the last thing standing between children and monsters, she finds in herself a heart unbroken by her fear. And that resilience will see darker responsibilities laid upon her.For Crafter Olivia Polden, the fire she commands and the red coat she wears represents the single greatest power in the City. Weirder of a power that could doom the City as surely as the foes marching upon it, she will stand first among those sent to halt the invasion. And only then, begin to learn how to live with despair. There is no night in the Everburning City. There can never be.(Cover courtesy of Mahana258)…
'Unsolicited Opinions' is a developing collection of reasonably well thought-out perspectives, about some of the stories I've come across here on Wattpad. I'd like to share some of what I willingly finished, and enjoyed, when I could find some time to sit back and enjoy a story. Here are some of the gems I came across, in the different genres. Some fantastic fantasy, surreal sci-fi, I might even do a vampire novel or two. I'll be updating this irregularly, and I will do my very best to make sure there are no plot spoilers for any of the books reviewed herein. The reviews will also generally be positive, since these are unsolicited opinions.…
Proof that Wattpad has enough culture to make fun of. *****Luca Cardego is the world's first and only quadrillionaire, so rich he has singlehandedly financed the terraforming of an entire world. He is also an unapologetic playboy with a possible shirt allergy, and a werewolf. But when space pirate Isabella Bonny crash-lands onto his world and into his life, she threatens to uncover more than just a secret buried beneath the Martian soil. She also upends his life in other ways, and leave him desiring more than vapid socialites and endless pool parties on space yachts. This, finally, is the werewolf story taken as seriously as Wattpad deserves. First book of the Werewolves in Space series.…
Five days sailing in a storm that didn't exist six days ago. Chasing an impossible light in a sea of endless sky. Vincent Locklear and Mercy Larkin have been set adrift. Their lives upturned, Vincent stripped of his captaincy, and newly purposeless, the pair now sail through a storm. Their course takes them five days into a storm that is less than six days old, birthed by a flash of light that, for just a moment, drowned out the sun. Mercy Larkin has lived a lifetime in someone else's world. Taken from her people, raised in indentured servitude, and finding her footing in Volante's navy, having the opportunity to change the course of her life is strange and terrifying. But she has chosen to return to the people who forswore her, and reconcile with the reason she chose her surname Larkin.Vincent Locklear has never managed to belong to the people he lives alongside. A child of the Monastery; a coven of secretive custodians of old science, he was cast out years ago to make his own way. Despite being an outsider and forced to keep his childhood a secret, he rose to become a ship captain, only to be cast out again. But what these two will find in the darkness of the storm, will set their lives on a course both demanding and unalterable. To find their way as children of unkindness.…
There is no night in the Everburning City. There can never be. Fourteen people lie dead on the platform of Billows Station, killed by fire and rage. And as the perpetrator hides within the millions of people who inhabit the City, the task of finding this murder falls to Inspector Samuel B Fraser. Aided by a grateful Bureau of Oversight, his investigation will reach deep into the mysteries that brought a young man to the madness of desperation, and beyond into secrets that some powers would rather stay buried.Cover art by the superbly generous Narcisse Navarre @inksorcery…
There is no night in the Everburning City. There can never be. Malice hides behind tragedy, as a conspiracy begins to gather steam. Natalia Casper, reporter for the Tributary, risks more than her reputation as she finds herself chasing plots that reach from High Central to the furthest walls. Adrian Keates, fleeing a life of crime, takes refuge in the one place in the City with strength enough to drive off even the hardened thugs of the Undercity, and finds himself tutored by a legend of the City's army. Tabitha a'Loria, already summoned to fight hellfire and insanity, is forced to hunt for someone who unwittingly holds dangerous secrets. Secrets that could either tear the City apart, or offer it the first hope it has known since the Founding.…
A sea of sky, a world of broken islands and shattered history, and flying ships ride the winds. Clarissa, a girl with no last name and no claim to anything beneath the endless blue, is sent to accompany a mysterious cargo aboard a ship of scoundrels. Flying beneath the lift bag of the Ravens' Child, accompanying the band of misfits and rogues that crew her, Clarissa begins to learn that the most profound mystery of her voyage is the one she takes with her. My NaNoWriMo 2019 project, an odd skypunk tale and something a little different from anything I've ever come across, like any good worldbuilding tale should be. If you happen to take a chance, let me know what you think.…
There is no night in the Everburning City. There can never be. Also, the Everburning City is a fairly complicated thing. Even as the author, I need copious amounts of notes to keep it all together. For any reader of the expanding series taking place in the City, I suspect the details can be a bit daunting. To that end, I'll begin adding to this handy guidebook. (Mostly) spoiler free, with a focus on answering the requests of anyone willing to spend their time on these tales. Burn brightly…
