Polymare's world is tainted with creatures the lands folk can't understand. Rather choose acceptance, control contaminates not only the mind of those in power, but also those of lower status. They were the damned. Chosen too unworthy too unworthy to live peacefully in society, deemed by society itself. She's lost her parents, her brother, and with nothing else to lose her only solution is fighting for the idea of coexistence.
