As the Curse slowly spread across the human population, the Upper constructed secured cities to keep out the Curse and its spreaders. Everyone who could not make it behind the walls of the cities were left to live in what the Upper hated most: Freedom. Saoirse Freedman was told that she was lucky and that she should be thankful.
