Between rhyme and howldangles a fragile world,a mundane egg of art:where words dance and displayand are not prosebecause prose is not fitfor frame or stage...My husband found some of my old poetry in a box in the back room when we were decluttering our house. He asked me if I wanted to save it. As it turned out, I did. I wrote these in September and October of 2003, shortly after I'd discovered I was pregnant with our second child. It is now my autumn. I am not young; I bear no fruit. But here is a memory of summer. My tree once blossomed. These poems have also been published in the commercial edition of Excavations.…
AN AMBYS 2024 FAVORITE (POETRY)These my offerings, tiny and fragile, they must take rootin stubborn soil. Fertilize them.Give them shape. Twisted they may grow, but their trunks must be strong. They must reach through the night. They must be of their ground...Note: this is as much an art portfolio as it is an anthology of my poetry. Every poem is illustrated. There is a regular section, and then a second section consisting of Instagram poetry posts that effectively make a "graphic novel" second edition of the first half of the book. Some of these poems were published in a chapbook, Eleusinian Mysteries, in 1995, under the pen name Sarah Maddox.Other publications that accepted my poetry include The Mill, Isis Magazine (the literary magazine for students at the University of Oxford), Tournaments Illuminated, and the late, great Shadowdance zine. All rights reserved; the moral rights of the author have been asserted; I do not provide consent for my writing to be used to train artificial intelligence.…
Oozed out in blood, my words seep slowlyonto drifts of white paper. What soil will I floodwhen springtime comes to dance? What flowerswill feed from this dying pool? What poems will screamas they gasp their first cold air?Looking for more unearthed poetic arcana? Passion? It's here. This book is a sort of dark sister to Excavations. The poetry in it is old, like what I published in Excavations. It's a little edgier, a little more raw. Here is what lies underneath. As in Excavations, some of the poems have been previously published under the pen name Sarah Maddox. They are also available in the commercial edition of Excavations. I retain all the rights to my published poetry.Mildly explicit. Mature readers only.…
I joke with the people who read my prose that writing my erotic literary fiction is like baking lasagna. The plot and characterization and style are the meat, pasta, and cheese; the naughty bits are all sauce; and then I go and ruin everything by sneaking philosophical discourse, literary discussion, and other nonsense in there like broccoli bits.Well, this book is nothing but broccoli. Some of it consists of stuff I transcribed from handwritten or typed stuff I wrote in the 1990's, because I'm in the process of purging clutter from my home, but any new essays I write will be stuffed in here as well, either in the first section, which is the academic part, or in the second section, which is is for the personal essays and the things I wrote for an arts and entertainment column I once had as co-editor of that section of the campus newspaper, back in my undergraduate days.…
No, you can't apply to be listed in my book of COOL BOOKS. No, I don't guarantee that a COOL BOOKS listing will confer a boost in readership. It confers a listing and a sticker that I send you privately. At some point it might also confer a book review. Maybe. As it is, it confers COOLNESS.…
Fun fact: Ancilla has its own art gallery! It's here. Behold the collection of all the promotions, illustrations, book trailers, and playlist videos I've ever made for my novel. (FYI: The gallery is safe for work, as the saying goes, but the original story is absolutely adults only). My art is also viewable on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/seradrakethebookwyrmAll rights reserved. New promo art gallery, coming up!I marked Wild Is the Wind: The Art of Ancilla concluded at the end of December 2024. My promotional art has other foci. While I still promote Ancilla, I simultaneously make art that entices readers to buy a commercial edition of Morsels. I am also working on Soror Mystica, which is the sequel to Ancilla, and a spin-off novella, The Adventures of the Hypotenuse. All of my projects get their own promo art.New art = new book.As in Wild Is the Wind and my contest logs, this art gallery will be peppered with offhand comments about the "joys" of the publishing industry, including self-publication and publishing on Wattpad.…
This is a portfolio of art. Or graphics. Or aesthetics. Or something. I'm not sure what to call it. Viewer, if you choose to look at what I have created, I hope you call it beautiful.…
This is a portfolio of awards and reviews Ancilla and its art gallery, Wild Is the Wind: The Art of Ancilla, have received, both on and off Wattpad. Also included: my author interviews.…
To keep myself from losing track of:all the contests I've entered, all the contests I've volunteered myself as a judge (or let myself be voluntold into judging), all the books I've had to read as a contestant or as a judge, all the deadlines, and all the other important stuff,I've decided to create a book that registers all these things in a somewhat organized fashion. I can't remember who advised me to do that, but whoever you are, and there are probably several of you, thank you.I've been reading that it's extremely common for contests to be a bit sluggish with follow-up if a person wins a major prize and gets graphics and shout-outs, so I'll use this book to keep track of that, too.I had no idea so many people would be adding my personal convenience book to their own bookshelves, let alone voting for chapters - if my book of contests is useful to other people, that makes me happy. Very happy. However, I feel I must reiterate that although other people are welcome to browse my public contest logs and look for contests, look for information about details of contests (i.e. you want me to pour you some tea), etc, these contest logs are primarily for my own use. I enter so many contests that I can't keep track of them without a log. I forget important details, too, including things like "Note to self: You do not get along with this contest host, best not participate in their contests."This was never meant to be an "expose" book. I'm not exposing anybody. Contests are matters of public record, as are any comments made in the contest books. I'm just a ditz who needs a written log to keep track of everything. I would lose my head if it wasn't attached to my shoulders.I DO NOT CONSENT TO MY POETRY AND PROSE BEING USED TO TRAIN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE…
