ACT 6

Scene 2

Friday, December 28, 2018

A street in Lagos Island

(At Mr. and Mrs. Udoh’s house)

{Enter Uyai, Michael and Mrs. Esther Okon}

{Sitting in the leaving room}

UYAI

That was how my husband and I got our first phone. I was so happy and cautious about it that anytime I go to the market, I tie the phone in my wrapper.
And we are leaving in this house now because of the help my husband rendered to Mr. Wilson.

Listen my sister, I have seen worst times. Times I almost gave up. But I fought. I didn’t fight alone, God was with me then and he still is. He took over. And I had my father and mother, Pastor Maxwell Atang and Pastor Mrs. Inyang Atang. I even had my sisters, Edidiong Atang, Utibe and Mrs. Toyin Afolabi all by my side giving me good counsel.

Don’t give up on your husband just pray for him.

(Michael, standing up quietly from the staircase he had been sitting on unnoticed listening to his mother’s story)

[Exit Michael]

MRS. ESTHER OKON

Instead of my husband to take his mistresses to a hotel, he brings them home and defiles our matrimonial bed. He is doing this to torture me. I have confronted him all to no avail. And my friends advices that I file for a divorce.

UYAI

(Smiling) Those friends will destroy you; the bible says “I hate divorce”. Malachi 2:16. You need to change your friends and don’t search for an easy way out of your problem.

MRS. ESTHER OKON

I try, but after listening to your story, I realized I’ve not even started. Everybody sees you and your husband as the perfect couple. Even my friends wish their marriages are like yours, myself included. If only they know the chains you had to break, the fiery stones you had to walk on and the injuries you sustained. I’m sure they will never compare again because strength is what makes the different.

UYAI

Thanks but those are my past and my God has fixed my torn heart and made all, a testimony. When you get home, please read psalm 118 verse 8 to 14. You will understand better.

Reject bad counsel, those friends of yours giving you this advice, check their lives, they are facing one challenge or the other.

Believe that you have the strength to win this battle, I know you are a lawyer but create time from your busy schedule to pray, meditate on the word, praise and thank God. And then you will testify. When your friends will come around asking about the method you use, you will reply, "My method is prayers."

Invite God to your home and let him take charge.

MRS. ESTHER OKON

Thank you so much, you have really given me a fresh perspective. I will do as you have said.

UYAI

And the lord will strengthen and guide you. Amen.

MRS. ESTHER OKON

Amen. Thank you again Mrs. Udoh. I’ll have to be on my way now. Please send my regards to your son and husband.

UYAI

I will. Thanks for stopping by.

[Exit]

I hope we can learn from Uyai's story.
Most of us might think,  this story is just fiction, the event cannot happen in real life.
I want you to know that,  although TORN is a fiction,  it is tied up with truth.
We have many Uyais around us,  most times we don't notice them because none are willing to share their story.
Well,  it is one thing to face a challenge and complain about it,  and another, to face it head strong,  survive through it and conqueror.

Like Uyai, may God Grant us the strength to overcome. Amen.

I hope you take out time to give your review,  and also vote.  Thanks.
