Chapter 31 - Fun times
With his curiosity piqued, Shinichi decided to strike up a conversation with Veronica.
As the group continued to chat about their respective interests and experiences, he found an opportunity to subtly steer the conversation in a more investigative direction elsewhere around the washroom outside.
"Eh!? Someone tipped off Sonoko's Tousan about my feud with Mouri, Rokuro and her!?" Shinichi gasped as Veronica spilt the beans on him.
Veronica's eyebrows raised in surprise as she glanced at Shinichi. "Oh, you didn't know? Yes, Sonoko's father was informed about the feud, and his wife had expressed her concerns about Sonoko to another friend of mine at another function during their conversation."
Shinichi's eyes narrowed slightly, his detective instincts kicking into high gear. "I see. And did he mention who tipped him off about the feud?"
Veronica hesitated for a moment before answering, choosing her words carefully. "He didn't explicitly mention the source, but it seemed like he had received information from someone who was familiar with the situation."
The Tantei apprentice's mind was racing as he processed Veronica's response. It was clear that someone had deliberately informed Sonoko's father about the feud, and that information had made its way to Veronica's friend at the function.
"Someone familiar with the situation..." Shinichi mused aloud, his voice tinged with a mix of scepticism and intrigue. "Does your friend have any idea who that could be? Someone who might have had access to that kind of information?"
"Judging from that same friend," The 10-year-old V-tuber's expression remained thoughtful as she considered his question, "Sonoko's mother revealed to my friend that the caller ID is someone in Japan."
The 6-year-old apprentice's eyes narrowed further as he digested this new piece of information. If the tip-off had come from someone familiar with the situation and had knowledge of the feud, it was clear that they had some level of access to the events that had transpired.
"Also, the reason I am here is to build for Ranran an alibi."
"Building an alibi?" Shinichi repeated, his brow furrowing. "For what purpose?"
"Remember when we made you sign that contract the permission to ensure Mouri Ran and Suzuki Sonoko don't mess around with Ranran? This is to ensure that Ranran has a solid alibi in case any accusations or suspicions arise. And I am dead certain that whoever the person is who tipped Sonoko's father, did set all of this to get Ranran into serious trouble." Veronica's gaze met Shinichi's, and there was a seriousness in her eyes that matched his own.
"Veronica," Shinichi began, his voice low and intense, "Is there anything else I should know about the caller?"
"It wasn't difficult to pinpoint who it was," Veronica sighed.
"Who do you suspect is responsible?" Shinichi asked, his voice firm.
Veronica's gaze remained steady as she replied, "I think deep down, you too know who is behind this."
His eyes narrowed as he processed Veronica's words. "Mamiko, Ishibashi Mamiko."
Veronica's confirmation of Shinichi's suspicion didn't come as a complete surprise, yet it still sent a chill down his spine. Ishibashi Mamiko, their delusional schoolmate of Teitan Elementary school had a twisted love obsession towards him and had a history of framing Ranran against him multiple times.
"Of course," he muttered, his expression growing more resolute. "Because I know the truth, she has to take her actions to a new level." Pacing in front of Veronica, he rambled, "She had to use Mouri and Suzuki against Ranran.....because she knew those two still blindly believed that Ranran is manipulating me, despite her true nature being out in the open." Clenching his fists, his determination evident. "How is it that now we are in another freaking country, she is still able to do this!?"
The British girl's gaze never wavered as she listened to Shinichi's words. "I don't understand why neither you nor Ranran throw her in prison yet."
The V-tuber's words hit Shinichi like a jolt of electricity. Her directness struck a chord within him, forcing him to confront a truth he had been avoiding. Ishibashi Mamiko's relentless pursuit and manipulation of those around her, even across international borders, had become a stark reminder of the dangerous game they were playing.
Shinichi stopped pacing and turned to face Veronica, his eyes reflecting a mix of frustration and determination. "She knows who is in charge of Tantei Association, the very ones we opened. All she needed to do is to utter a word to the press, and Ranran will die in an instant." Her eyes widened at Shinichi's revelation, and Shinichi slumped a bit, "After I accidentally where I was dupe into forcing Ranran to quit as The Fox, I wanted to make up the child Tantei job she had lost by opening the HQ to avoid having that annoying Mouri Ran to harass me. Back then, I was assuming we wouldn't attract that much attention after solving 6 major cases from the press. But apparently....the media do get interested in a detective agency run by 7 elementary school kids....."
The noble girl's eyes remained fixed on Shinichi, her expression a mixture of concern and understanding.
"Of course, we have leverage over her, so we tipped off the press that her Okaasan is a dominitrix for wealthy clients." Shinichi gave a weak grin, "And it did us a favour since it made her a pariah in school. But I think....it pissed her off way more than we should...."
"Wait, Mamiko's mother is a what!?" The 10-year-old British V-tuber gasped.
Shinichi nodded, his expression serious. "Yes, Mamiko's mother is involved in a questionable profession, which gave us some leverage over her. We used that information to prevent her from causing further harm."
Veronica's eyes widened further, her shock evident. "That's... quite an unexpected turn of events."
"It was a necessary step to protect ourselves and Ranran," Shinichi explained, his voice firm. "But it seems like Mamiko is more determined than ever to get back at us. She's willing to go to great lengths to manipulate situations and people, even if it means causing trouble across international borders."
"I am curious, how did you find that out?"
"Ranran took me to this pub after we saw a damning video of Mamiko and Sonoko jokingly discouraging me from becoming a Tantei to marry me off to Mouri," The little 6-year-old spat bitterly, "I wanted to know what sort of life Mamiko has to lead to be this psychotic, so it was very shocking when we saw her mother...do sickening things with men."
The more he shared, the whiter he grew.
"Wait, did you see all of it in action?"
"No, we had glasses that censored a lot of the actions, but I roughly was able to put together what she was doing with those men."
"You are six! How do you know this sort of stuff?!"
"I know things. Anyway, as soon as I witness all of that, I decided she had to be distanced away from me, permanently."
"I can't even imagine how difficult that must have been for you and Ranran," Veronica said, her voice filled with empathy. "To uncover something so disturbing about someone you knew... It's no wonder Mamiko's influence in Teitan Elementary School is utterly terrifying."
Shinichi pinched his nose bridge recalling the disturbing details.
"How the hell are you still working as a Tantei even after witnessing something that horrifying?!" Veronica was giving the little boy a look of disbelief. "I meant it's clear cut what that delusional 6-year-old plans to do that to you when you grow up. Cause I would flee in your shoes if I were you."
"When I told Ranran I wanted to pursue an apprenticeship under her, I meant it when I say I won't let anything, let alone, this nonsense haunt me."Shinichi's gaze turned sombre as he met Veronica's eyes. "I wronged Ranran way back, but to see the level of hell she had to deal with thanks to Mamiko manipulating me and the others to go after her...I have a certain level of conscience that tells me I had to fix it."
Filled with respect for Shinichi's determination and resolve, she decides, "I can see why you parted ways with Mouri Ran and Suzuki Sonoko, they don't deserve you."
Shinichi's lips twitched into a small smile, appreciating Veronica's words of support.
"Anyway, I trust you to look after her, I will...try to come up with a more solid alibi before Mouri and Suzuki could do anything stupid," With her hands in her blazer pocket, she turned to leave him before telling him, "Remember that contract you sign with us back at the hospital, honour your words, and we will ensure that Mouri and Suzuki will be the friend you knew back before Mamiko's manipulation twisted their souls."
"You can count on me to honour my commitment," Shinichi said sincerely, his voice tinged with gratitude.
Offering him a reassuring smile before turning to leave, she turned her head to say, "Good luck with the upcoming NASA event coming into this hotel in 2 days time. Regarding your missing eagle case with Professor Shibuya."
As Veronica walked away, Shinichi stood there with a mixture of determination and contemplation. Her presence had shed new light on the situation, and her support had given him renewed strength to face the challenges ahead.
Shinichi's thoughts turned to the upcoming NASA event and the missing eagle case with Professor Shibuya. There was a sense of urgency in his mind as he realized that these cases might be connected in ways he hadn't yet fully understood.
As he made his way back to the dining area where his classmates were still engaged in lively conversation, Shinichi's mind was already racing with strategies and possibilities.
....................................................................................................
The night had fallen over New York City, casting a blanket of darkness over the bustling streets.
Inside the luxurious Mayfair at Brampton Hotel, a sense of anticipation hung in the air as Shinichi, Takuma, and Reina made their way to the penthouse suite. The trio had been summoned for a meeting, and they could feel the weight of the upcoming conversation.
As they entered the penthouse, they found themselves in a lavish living area adorned with elegant furnishings and a panoramic view of the city's skyline. The room was bathed in the soft glow of ambient lighting, creating an atmosphere of sophistication and intrigue.
Ranran was already present, standing near a large table covered with documents and diagrams related to the upcoming NASA event. Her blue eyes were focused and determined, a reflection of her dedication to the task at hand.
"Hey, you three. Thanks for coming," Ranran greeted them with a warm smile, gesturing for them to take a seat around the table.
Shinichi, Takuma, and Reina exchanged glances before finding their seats, their curiosity piqued by the serious tone of the meeting.
Ranran wasted no time and began to explain the situation. "So, as you know, the NASA event is just two days away. From the sounds of things, kids our age are invited over to participate in various activities and learn more about space exploration. However, the kids that they only invite are from Edgewood Academy children only."
"Why? Is it because they are eager to grace themselves into high society? I do recall you mentioning that the kids who enrol in your former school consist mostly of nobles and royals." Takuma scoffed.
"There are other things besides that," Ranran chuckled before revealing, "To enrol into Edgewood, the children must be able to potty train as young as 3, understand cues in social settings and social functions, and don't throw tantrums like most kids would. With such kids who behaved as mature and understanding as an adult, it would be a straightforward no-brainer to invite such children to such events. Especially their prestigious privilege background is an added cherry on top."
"I see," Shinichi nodded in understanding, his expression serious. "So, it's not just about their status but also their behaviour and ability to fit into these high-profile settings."
"And you insist on wanting me to train you within two days," Ranran crossed her fingers, her forehead leaning against them, "I don't know of anyone who can easily learn all of this within 2 days."
Shinichi leaned back in his chair, his mind already racing with the challenges ahead. He had faced countless intricate cases and deductions, but the prospect of mastering the intricate social etiquette and expectations of high society within just two days was an entirely different kind of puzzle.
"Don't get me wrong, I know Shinichi can easily adapt like a chameleon, but social settings....that wouldn't be the best suit for him." Reina and Takuma exchanged looks of doubt at Shinichi.
"In what way am I not capable of that?" Shinichi crossed his arms at them.
"Alright, let me recount those scenarios," Ranran sighed before listing down a couple.
............................................................................
The first incident Ranran recalled was when they both attended a formal dinner under the Kudo's grandparents.
During that time, Ranran and Shinichi were seated next to a renowned chef known for his exquisite culinary creations. As they enjoyed their meal, Shinichi couldn't help but analyze the flavours and ingredients in each dish.
"This soufflé is delightful," Ranran mused, taking a small bite. "The use of saffron and a touch of nutmeg adds a subtle depth to the flavour profile."
The chef, flattered by the little girl's compliment, nodded appreciatively. "You have quite the refined palate."
Shinichi nodded in agreement, oblivious to the fact that his upcoming commentary was about to turn the spotlight onto him. "Yes, well, I've had my fair share of cases involving poisonings, so I've become quite familiar with detecting unusual flavours."
Unbeknownst to Shinichi, the table fell into a momentary silence, the guests exchanging bewildered glances at his unexpected revelation while Ranran facepalmed.
............................................................................
Ranran's recount of the incident elicited chuckles from Reina and Takuma, who were clearly entertained by Shinichi's unintentional blunder.
"I was just stating what I had experience in my profession. What is wrong with that?" Shinichi scoffed.
"And that's just the tip of the iceberg, Shinichi. There was also the time when we attended the Ambassador's reception."
As she described the second incident, the group's amusement only grew.
............................................................................
During the Ambassador's reception, the children were mingling with diplomats and dignitaries from various countries. Shinichi was engaged in a conversation with a distinguished diplomat from France.
"It's fascinating to see how international relations have evolved over the years," the diplomat remarked, his tone thoughtful. "In today's interconnected world, cultural diplomacy plays a crucial role."
Shinichi nodded, genuinely intrigued by the topic. "Indeed, cultural exchange can foster understanding and cooperation among nations, which in turn can lead to more peaceful relations."
The diplomat seemed impressed by Shinichi's insight. "You're quite knowledgeable for someone your age."
And then, the conversation took an unexpected turn.
"By the way, young man, have you ever considered a career in diplomacy?" the diplomat asked with a smile.
Shinichi blinked, his expression momentarily blank. "Diplomacy? Well....that would force me to become a professional liar."
The diplomat's eyebrows shot up in surprise, and a polite cough rippled through the surrounding guests.
............................................................................
"What part of this is funny?!"
Shinichi scowled at Ranran's description of Shinichi's encounters at formal events since this had led to Takuma and Reina laughing even harder.
"I was just being honest," Shinichi grumbled, leaning back in his chair with a slight pout.
"In the first place, Shinichi, no one simply goes up to the ambassador of Japan to simply state out their profession are liars." Ranran rubbed her face in frustration over how dense he could be.
"But even you yourself state that they are all liars." Shinichi pointed out.
"Yeah, but you don't simply call out their bluffs unless they provoke you or anything." Ranran let out an exasperated sigh. "Unless they happen to be a suspect for a crime that is committed on the case with are in charge of, zip your damn mouth."
"Oh man, Shinichi, you really know how to make an impression." Reina was even wiping a tear from the corner of her eye.
Takuma chimed in, trying to stifle his giggles, "Yeah, telling a diplomat that diplomacy is all about lying? That's some next-level honesty right there."
Shinichi rolled his eyes, his annoyance is evident. "I was just being truthful. It's not my fault if they can't handle the reality."
Ranran gave him a deadpan look. "There's a time and place for honesty, Shinichi. You can't just drop truth bombs left and right without considering the consequences." Then Ranran revealed the ultimate scenario, "But the latest one, this took place shortly after I was discharged from the hospital thanks to our last major case before this one."
...................................................................
That day, thanks to the events of 'The Illegitimate Extra' case, to thank them, Mr Muniko who was Tantei Association's second client at that time invited them over to an entertainer circle-related event.
Unfortunately at that time, Mr Muniko's spoiled daughter around their age was there at that time.
Now Mr Muniko was amazed at Ranran's talent, not to mention, her work ethic for a 6-year-old child.
So much so, that he would often compare his daughter to her, who only immersed herself in romance mangas and dramas, and hates studying most of the time.
Therefore, outraged and feeling inferior, Muniko's daughter did what any child would do in her shoes, which is to woo Shinichi with praise, thinking that Shinichi was in a relationship with Ranran to get back at the red-lip detective.
However, unbeknownst to Muniko's daughter, she was able to get a nasty shock through Shinichi's bluntness.
The event organized by Mr Muniko was a lively and vibrant gathering of entertainers, performers, and enthusiasts, all coming together to celebrate their shared passion. The venue was filled with colourful displays, musical performances, and interactive exhibits that showcased the diversity of talents within the entertainer circle.
As the Tantei Association members mingled with the crowd, Ranran's natural curiosity and outgoing nature drew her to various performers, engaging them in thoughtful conversations and genuinely showing interest in their craft. Her genuine interactions and appreciation for their talents left a lasting impression on many, earning her admiration and respect.
Mr Muniko's daughter, on the other hand, seemed uninterested in the various activities and instead spent most of her time idly flipping through romance manga and occasionally glancing at her phone. She appeared disengaged from the event, much to her father's disappointment.
The contrast between Ranran's enthusiasm and the daughter's indifference didn't go unnoticed by Mr. Muniko. He couldn't help but feel proud of Ranran's maturity and genuine interest in the world around her. In his eyes, she embodied the kind of curiosity and dedication he wished to see in his own daughter.
As the event progressed, the daughter found herself drawn to Shinichi, perhaps as an attempt to garner attention and make herself seem more appealing. She approached him with a coy smile, leaning in to strike up a conversation.
"Hey there," she greeted, her tone dripping with sweetness. "I couldn't help but notice you talking to Ranran. You must be close, huh?"
Shinichi raised an eyebrow, his detective instincts immediately picking up on the ulterior motive behind her words. "You can simply put it that way," he replied simply.
The daughter's smile widened, clearly pleased with the response. "That's great. Ranran is such an impressive girl, always so mature and talented. I can see why you'd be drawn to her."
Shinichi's expression remained neutral as he regarded her carefully. "Yes, she's a remarkable partner-in-crime."
The daughter seemed encouraged by Shinichi's lack of resistance and continued, "And I've heard she's been helping you study and improve your social skills. It's nice to have someone like her by your side."
The apprentice's eyes narrowed slightly, his patience starting to wear thin. "Ranran is indeed a great partner, always willing to offer her support and guidance."
Seemingly undeterred, the daughter pressed on. "You know, I'm quite interested in getting to know you better too. Maybe we could spend some time together?"
Shinichi's response was blunt and unapologetic. "I appreciate your interest, but I prefer to focus on my studies and my work as a detective with Ranran, rather than waste my time with a girl like you."
Her smile faltered her attempt to woo Shinichi clearly not yielding the desired results. She was taken aback by his straightforward rejection, unaccustomed to someone not falling for her charms.
Ranran couldn't help but watch the interaction unfold from a distance, her lips quirking up in a small smile as she observed Shinichi's unwavering honesty. She had seen this side of him enough times to know that he had no patience for insincere or manipulative behaviour.
The daughter's shock quickly turned to anger, her face flushing with embarrassment and frustration. Her attempt to use Shinichi to get back at Ranran had backfired spectacularly.
"What... What do you mean, 'a girl like me'?" she stammered, her voice tinged with disbelief and hurt.
"You post your photos on Instagram constantly on every single branded dress your father purchased for you, 67 photos per day," Shinichi met her gaze evenly, not backing down from his statement. "If not, you are busy causing girl drama on Instagram by spreading rumours and engaging in petty arguments. Your entire focus seems to revolve around appearances and superficial matters. I have no interest in indulging in such trivialities."
The daughter's face turned an even deeper shade of red, her embarrassment now coupled with anger. She opened her mouth to retort, but Shinichi's words had already struck a nerve, and she found herself at a loss for a comeback.
Ranran, who had been observing the interaction from a distance, couldn't help but stifle a laugh. She had seen through the daughter's intentions and knew that Shinichi's honesty could be quite brutal.
The daughter quickly recovered, though her expression was tinged with annoyance. "Well, suit yourself. But just so you know, I have plenty of admirers who would love to spend time with me."
"Sure, like a 150 drama episode that will not end in sight till their brain cells are dead."Shinichi's response was swift and matter-of-fact.
The daughter's frustration was evident as she huffed, clearly offended by Shinichi's candid remarks. She shot him a glare before turning on her heel and storming off, her attempt at getting Shinichi's attention having ended in failure.
.................................................................................
"Truthfully, as this is justifiable, he is rather dense to a girl's feelings." Reina thought about this.
"I can't believe you said all of that to her," Takuma was shocked to the core. "You really have a way of cutting through the nonsense, I am surprised your former friend Mouri Ran has a crush on you."
"In the first place, her feelings again as I mentioned were manipulated into thinking she likes me, when she truly doesn't." Shinichi shrugged nonchalantly at Takuma's remark.
"I do wonder how on earth you ended up having fangirls crushing on you despite being blunt." Reina sweats a bullet behind her head.
"Hey, I was just being honest," Shinichi defended himself with a shrug. "If people can't handle the truth, that's on them."
"Anyway, the bottom line for the upcoming NASA event...we need to ask those drunkards about the circumstances that lead Professor Shibuya to forcefully made him resigned as a distinguished rocket scientist, due to rumours of him siphoning money from the company's project to look after his 150 plus birds." Ranran reminded him.
"Right," Shinichi acknowledged, his focus shifting back to the task at hand. "What do I need to do to interact with those people without triggering suspicion?"
"Besides lending you my Edgewood School uniform, the key purpose is to see whether Professor Shibuya did in fact embezzle the funds, or that he was framed." Ranran says, "If he was framed, it would make things easier for us."
"How so?" Takuma blinked, "We are still no closer to locating him."
"Also, what makes you certain that Professor Shibuya was framed?" Reina prompted her to speak.
"I was thinking about that possibility regarding Professor Shibuya stealing something from his former workplace in NASA and ending up in jail...I was thinking what in the world would trigger him to do so?" Ranran explained, "It wasn't until Emiko brought up the allegations of him embezzling from NASA that it brought me into one particular direction: He has forcefully resigned thanks to those allegations that no one is able to confirm nor deny. A place he loved, cherished and worked for several decades to be ousted for something he didn't do? That is an abrupt end to a career, it would make sense for him to steal something from NASA if the allegation was false."
"So, we need to investigate these allegations and gather evidence to either confirm or debunk them. If we can prove that he was falsely accused, it could potentially lead us to the truth behind his disappearance. And if we are lucky, we might be able to figure out what was concealed in that eagle from NASA so much so, that The Snake resorted to killing his own men." Shinichi nodded thoughtfully, his mind racing through the various scenarios.
Once more, Takuma double-checked the measurements of the stolen eagle, "Emiko mentioned that the stuffed bird measures approximately 12 inches in height and has a wingspan of around 18 inches. What would NASA have to be able to fit into such a bird?"
"It could be anything, some sort of data storage device, microfilm, a small prototype, or even something like a piece of valuable information that could be used as leverage," Reina suggested.
"But considering Professor Shibuya's past career happens to be a rocket scientist, it only made sense that it must be related to his research or projects, right?"
Takuma's words got everyone's attention.
"Right," Ranran confirmed. "That would've been way easier for him to steal. No one would've suspected him of doing the worst, since he worked there for decades."
"But Ranran, I don't mean to doubt you, but although this event will definitely have drunkards, what if they are still aware and clamped up." Takuma had some concerns to share about this matter, "I know through my Tousan some people who can handle their drink well."
"Simple, don't be too direct when asking around about it," Ranran replied. We can't just approach them directly and ask about the allegations. That would likely raise suspicion and make them clam up, as you mentioned, Takuma. Instead, we need to engage them in casual conversations and try to gather information indirectly."
"I can help with that," Shinichi chimed in.
"And I only have 2 days to train you," Ranran pinched her nose bridge. "Alright, here's what we'll do. I'll help train Shinichi in the art of social interaction, especially in delicate situations like these. We'll focus on engaging people in conversation, subtly steering the discussions towards the topic we're interested in, and extracting information without raising suspicion."
"While all of this is going on," Shinichi turned to Reina and Takuma, "The both of you make sure if Suzuki Sonoko and Mouri Ran are around, remove them. We do not want them to jeopardise our operation."
"Agreed," Takuma nodded, understanding the importance of keeping any potential disruptions at bay. "We'll make sure to keep an eye out for them and ensure they don't interfere with the investigation."
Reina added, "If we spot them approaching, we'll try to divert their attention or come up with some excuse to keep them occupied."
.................................................................................
After Reina and Takuma waved their goodbye, leaving Ranran and Shinichi alone, he asked, "Neh Ranran, why didn't you get Takuma instead to be in charge of this social setting thing? If I recall correctly, he is a social butterfly."
"He is a qualified social butterfly, I will freely admit it, but there are a couple of reasons why I didn't want him to take on this role."
She raised her index finger, ticking off her points. "Firstly, many Edgewood kids tend to have a superiority complex due to their privileged backgrounds and the strict upbringing enforced by their parents—note that this doesn't apply to all of them. To handle such individuals, you need someone who can be confident and assertive without being confrontational. Takuma's natural charm might not work well in situations where he needs to subtly guide conversations."
"Secondly," she continued, raising a second finger, "Takuma's charm tends to be quite irresistible to certain types of people, particularly girls. While that might be an advantage in some cases, it could also make them more cautious around him, as they might suspect his motives or be too focused on trying to impress him."
"Lastly," Ranran concluded, raising a third finger, "It's about time those idiots within my former school be taught a lesson with your blunt words."
"So, you're saying I have the right amount of bluntness to handle these privileged kids and their egos? Fair enough," Shinichi conceded. "I suppose I'll embrace my role as the social 'bull in a china shop'."
"Well, let's hope you don't break too much China, metaphorically speaking. Remember, the goal is to gather information without ruffling too many feathers."
"I'll do my best," Shinichi assured her.
As the conversation continued, they delved into more strategies and tactics for the upcoming event, discussing possible conversation starters, ways to subtly direct discussions, and how to handle unexpected twists in their interactions.
Before they knew it, it was around 11 pm.
The penthouse suite had been buzzing with their discussions and preparations, but now a sense of exhaustion began to settle in. Ranran stifled a yawn, realizing just how late it had gotten.
"Alright, Shinichi, I think it's time we both get some rest," she suggested. "We've covered a lot of ground today, and we need to be well-rested for the event tomorrow."
Shinichi nodded in agreement, feeling a combination of excitement and nervousness for the challenges that lay ahead.
"Now it's that late...I am going to bet Mouri Ran and Suzuki Sonoko are having sleepless nights at that hunted hotel." Ranran snickered.
As they both chuckled at the thought of Mouri Ran and Suzuki Sonoko dealing with their own misadventures, they began to wind down their conversation. They had no idea how right they were.
...................................................................
Back in "The Grand Elegance Palace", 6-year-old Mouri Ran and Suzuki Sonoko were wondering why life was so cruel to them.
The contrast between the luxurious name and the actual state of the hotel was quite amusing, if not ironic.
The room was dimly lit, the flickering lightbulb casting eerie shadows on the worn-out furniture and faded wallpaper. The bed was creaky and uncomfortable, and the sound of dripping water from a leaky faucet echoed through the room.
Ran sat on the edge of the bed, looking around with a mix of trepidation and determination. "Sonoko, I can't believe we actually went through with this. The Grand Elegance Palace is anything but elegant."
Sonoko, who was inspecting a suspicious-looking stain on the carpet, let out a dramatic sigh. "I know, Ran. This place is a disaster. But we can't give up now! We're on a mission to uncover the truth about Ranran being 'The Fox', and we won't let a little...shabbiness...get in our way."
Ran nodded, her determination renewed. "You're right, Sonoko. We can't let a minor setback deter us from our goal. We'll endure this night, and tomorrow we'll be back on the case, ready to face whatever challenges come our way."
Sonoko pumped her fist in the air, her eyes shining with enthusiasm. "That's the spirit, Ran! We'll show them that we're not afraid to get our hands dirty in pursuit of justice!"
Soon, the howling sound that echoed through the dimly lit room sent shivers down both Ran and Sonoko's spines. They exchanged uneasy glances, their bravado faltering for a moment.
"W-what was that?" Ran's voice quivered as she clutched the edge of the bed.
Sonoko's eyes were wide as she strained to listen. "I-I don't know, but it sounded...ominous."
As the howling continued, its eerie wail seemed to grow louder and more intense. The girls could feel their hearts racing as their imaginations run wild with thoughts of ghosts, monsters, and all sorts of supernatural entities.
Ran's grip on the bed tightened, her knuckles turning white. "Sonoko, I think we might have underestimated just how haunted this place is."
Sonoko gulped audibly, her confidence from earlier dissipating rapidly. "You mean...you think this hotel is really haunted?"
Ran's eyes darted around the room, searching for the source of the howling. "I don't know, but it's definitely not helping our situation right now."
Just then, a loud crash sounded from the hallway, causing both girls to jump and clutch onto each other in fear.
"What was that?!" Sonoko exclaimed, her voice trembling.
Ran's mind raced as she tried to come up with a rational explanation. "It...it could just be a gust of wind knocking something over...or maybe a loose shutter."
"But what if it's...something else?" Sonoko's voice quivered.
Ran shook her head, trying to dispel the growing sense of unease. "We can't let our imagination get the best of us, Sonoko. We're detectives, remember? We face danger and uncertainty head-on. Let's investigate and find out what's really going on."
With a newfound determination, the girls cautiously made their way to the door, their steps hesitant and careful. As they opened the door and peered into the dimly lit hallway, they were greeted by an unexpected sight.
There, standing in front of a flickering lightbulb, was a figure dressed in a tattered, flowing robe. The figure's face was obscured by shadows, and its outstretched arms seemed to be reaching out toward them.
Ran and Sonoko gasped, their hearts racing as they stumbled back into their room, slamming the door shut.
"It's...it's a ghost!" Sonoko's voice was barely above a whisper, her face pale.
Ran's mind was racing, her instincts kicking in. "No, Sonoko, we can't jump to conclusions. We're detectives, remember? Let's stay calm and assess the situation."
As they pressed their ears against the door, they heard the figure in the hallway emits a low, mournful howl that sent chills down their spines once more.
Unbeknownst to them, that figure was merely a mannequin in a white raincoat.
As the girls listened to the eerie howl, a mix of relief and embarrassment washed over them as they realized that their imaginations had run away with them. They exchanged sheepish glances, their initial fear now giving way to a nervous chuckle.
Ran cleared her throat, her voice shaky but determined. "Well, that was...anticlimactic."
Sonoko let out a nervous laugh, her face turning slightly red. "Yeah, I guess we let our instincts get the best of us, huh?"
The brunette nodded, her bravado returning. "If we can face this, we can face Ranran's cunning schemes."
"Right?! What could possibly go wrong?"
Little did those girls know, many things will go wrong the following day.
.....................................................................
While it goes nighttime in the Big Apple, the sun rises in Japan.
Back in Beikai District in Japan, Emiko, Michio and Junko gathered in the main HQ to discuss attempting to locate Professor Hoga, the only friend of Professor Shibuya who is still missing.
Emiko sat at the head of a long wooden table, her expression serious and focused. Michio and Junko flanked her on either side, their faces mirroring her determination. The room was adorned with shelves filled with books and scientific instruments, a testament to the association's dedication to unravelling mysteries and uncovering the truth.
"Alright, we've made progress in our investigation, but we're still missing a crucial piece of the puzzle: Professor Hoga," Emiko began, her fingers tapping rhythmically on the table. "He's the last person who had contact with Professor Shibuya before his disappearance, and I believe digging into his background would do us good."
Junko's glasses glinting in the soft light of the room nodded in agreement. "Agreed. And I think the only thing logical is to head back to Teitan University, his workplace, to ask about his life in and out of the university."
"Considering having Ranran and Shinichi's permission, it shouldn't hinder our investigation." Michio leaned forward, his expression thoughtful.
"But Sergeant Genzo did tell us not to look into it, after that shooting incident at Professor Shibuya's place where you, Takuma, Ranran and Shinichi were almost shot." Junko frowned at Michio.
"Not to mention, the kidnapping incident involving The Snake's daughter, Adeline, who went after Shinichi, and former member Mouri Ran," Emiko adds.
Once more, Emiko noted that Junko's eyes twitched at the mention of Adeline's name. "Seriously, that girl has been nothing but trouble. Why did she even kidnap those two in the first place?! I doubt The Snake would be stupid to send his 10-year-old daughter to kidnap them!"
"Even I myself can't figure out why," Emiko let out a sigh, her frustration evident. "If she was trying to prove to her father her value as a criminal's daughter, she didn't need to go that far. In the first place, she did a good job attempting to fool Michio into thinking she had a crush on him before he knew of her true identity."
"Whatever it is, I doubt we can ever get to the bottom of what that sleazy girl thinks." Junko rolled her eyes, clearly still annoyed by Adeline's antics. "I hope The Snake punished her in the worst unimaginable way possible, like with a crack whip for that matter."
"You do know The Snake had killed people before, right?" Michio reminded her.
"Yes, I'm well aware of that. But I can't help but feel frustrated by the chaos and danger she brought into this investigation. Also, I can't help it, but considering Mouri and Shinichi are both 6 years old while Adeline is 10, it makes me want her dead a bit more since she had no regard for human life."
"No regard for human life, huh...." The two children's attention switched to Emiko as she rambled, "I wonder if that is truly the case."
Emiko's words hung in the air, her contemplative expression catching the attention of Michio and Junko. They exchanged curious glances, intrigued by Emiko's sudden change in tone.
"What do you mean, Emiko?" Michio asked, leaning in slightly.
Pondering a bit, Emiko passed the papers to Junko and Michio, "Take a look at Shinichi's statement when he was kidnapped by Adeline in front of Ranran-san."
Junko and Michio took the papers from Emiko, scanning through Shinichi's statement. As they read the account of the kidnapping incident, their brows furrowed in concentration. Emiko watched them closely, her eyes narrowing slightly as she observed their reactions.
"According to Shinichi's statement, Adeline seemed to be curious about certain unusual things," Emiko remarked, her voice thoughtful. "When he was being held hostage in that Jaguar car, Adeline asked all sorts of questions. Mainly about that infamous feud between Shinichi and Mouri back in our school, as well as questions about Ranran."
"How is that odd?" Junko's gaze focused on the paper, "When Shinichi demanded why Adeline wanted to know all of this, she said it was in the name of 'chaos'."
"Aside from the chaos part, there are other parts you are missing out," Emiko read out the copy of the paper report, "This is the part Adeline reacted 'Aren't you all 6-years-old!?', after Shinichi was forced to reveal to her about Mouri bullying him into quitting as a Tantei to be married off to her."
"So?" Michio and Junko grew baffled.
"If Adeline was heartless, the way she reacted when she found out that Mouri bullied Shinichi into quitting his dream was quite unusual," Emiko explained, her gaze fixed on the two. "She seemed genuinely surprised, even shocked, by the revelation that this level of evil was possible among 6-year-olds, and Adeline is the same age as you and Junko. That's what makes her reaction so intriguing. It's as if she genuinely didn't expect something like this to happen." Emiko explained, her voice tinged with intrigue.
