S1:C8 The Runaway
Kie awoke the next morning, with a smile on her face. She was incredibly happy that something had finally happened with Nate. She reached over to try and see if he was there. However, her hand met the sheets, and nothing else. This left her confused.
"Nate?" She called out. She got no response back. She now began to get worried. 'Where is he?' She thought. "Nate?" She tried again. Still nothing. She walked through the Château, looking for him. There was no trace of him, nor his clothes from the previous night.
---------
Not wanting to overreact, Kie simply went home. After getting changed, she needed a shower. She arrived back at her house, knowing her dad was at work, and hoping her mom was out.
She slowly opened the door, not wanting it to creek at all. She began to sneak to her room, when she heard a voice. "Kiara?"
Kie froze in place. "Yeah, mom?"
Her mom came around the corner with a concerned look on her face. "Why didn't you come back last night?"
Kie's breath hitched in her throat. She needed to think of something. "Uhm... th-the guys just wanted to stay there, so I stayed with them." She stuttered. Her mom nodded, but Kiara knew she knew she was lying.
"Hmhm. And what are you doing now?" She asked her. "Well I didn't have anything else to wear, so I just thought I'd take a shower." She smiled at her mom, feigning innocence.
Anna knew she was lying, but decided not to press the matter further. "Ok, go on." She told her daughter.
Kie nodded, and turned, going up the stairs.
---------
Now showered, Kiara went to look for Nate. She couldn't find him. He wasn't at his house, he wasn't at Heyward's. She even went down to the beach to look there, but still no sign. She got a hold of JJ and Pope, but they hadn't heard anything either.
She was really worried now. She had no idea where he was. Her final place to check was down by the docks. She was looking around as she walked further onto the dock. There was still no sign, until she finally looked into the Tiki Bar. There he was. But he wasn't alone.
There, standing next to him, was some random girl. She was short, long brown hair and a tanned complexion. She began to rub her hand up and down Nate's arm. Kie hoped he would move away from it, but alas, he stayed still.
Kie didn't want to watch this, but couldn't look away. The final straw came, when the girl leaned in and kissed his cheek. That was it. Kie stormed up to the two of them, her loud footsteps catching their attention. She stopped in front of the two of them.
She pointed at the girl. "You. Get out of here. Now!" She told her.
"And why would I do that?" She questioned Kiara. Kie just glared at her, telling her everything she needed to know.
"O...k. I'll see you around, Nate." She told him.
"Yeah, see ya." He responded.
The girl walked off, leaving the two alone. "Was that really necessary?" Nate questioned her. She turned around, looking livid and upset.
"What the hell is wrong with you!?" She shouted at him.
He stepped back. "What?"
Kie's eyes went wide. "What do you mean, 'what'? Where the hell did you go this morning!?" She asked him, angrily.
"Uh, here." He said, gesturing to the bar.
"To flirt with girls!?" She continued to interrogate him.
"I guess?" He more questioned than answered. Kie was incredibly hurt by this.
"So, what? Last night meant nothing!?" She once again yelled at him. Nate let out a breath and looked down.
Kie took this as her answer. "You know what? Fuck you. We're gonna get the gold out of the well, then I'm done with you." He looked back up at her. "God, I can't believe I actually thought you might have changed." She told him, shaking her head, before walking off.
He got scared. He didn't want to lose her, he was just afraid of them getting together, no matter how much he wanted it. But all that fear went out the window when he saw the back of her head.
"Kie! Wait!" He called after her.
"What!? What could you possibly have to say right now!?" She shouted at him. There was so much he wanted to say in that moment. So much he wanted to confess to her.
But he froze. "I... uh." He stammered.
She got sick of him trying to come up with an excuse. She turned on her heel and walked away. Tears beginning to fall from her eyes.
Nate looked down, ashamed. He felt someone's stares on him. He shot his head back up and looked to see everyone in the bar looking at him. He looked back down, before leaving.
--------
The group were now outside the Château. Kie and Pope were testing out the wench, while JJ and Nate were sat on the edge of the hot tub. Kie and Nate still hadn't said a word to each other since the morning.
"How's it feeling?" Pope asked Kie as he slowly lowered her down. "Feels good." She said, not sounding herself. "Alright I'm taking you down." He told her. "'Kay".
"John B pulling a 'Houdini'." JJ exclaimed, looking over at Nate, who was just staring at the water.
"Yeah, where is he? I got my scholarship interview in the morning we've gotta get this done." Pope said, still lowering Kiara.
John B then walked up to the house, looking angry, and on a mission. "Speak of the devil." JJ announced. Nate looked up to see his friend.
"Hey! Dude I set up the entire wench to pull up the gold and everything." JJ told him.
"No he did not. I did that." Pope countered. John B just ignored the two of them, still marching towards the Château.
"John B." Nate and Kie called at the same time, making them look at each other for the first time since the bar. The Routledge boy just continued to walk.
"Ok, that's it?" JJ said, confused. Pope and Kiara walked over to him and Nate.
"Uhh, what was that all about?" Pope asked them. Nate shrugged his shoulders.
"I was gonna ask you the same question." JJ informed them.
The four walked into the house after their friend, to see him rummaging through drawers and cupboards, clearly looking for something. "You alright, man? What's up?" Pope asked him.
"What're you looking for?" Kie followed up.
"John B?"
"Bro, what's going on, man?" JJ questioned. John B went over to the couch and lifted up the cushion. He stuck his hand in, and pulled out the gun. The three held shocked looks on their faces after seeing this.
"John B, what do you need the gun for, man? Talk to us!" JJ tried to reason with him. John B turned around and grabbed JJ, before throwing him on the couch.
"John B, chill!" Kie shouted at him.
"What're you doing?" Pope also tried to stop him, but just got shoved into a table.
Nate was the last line of defense. He stuck both his hands out to his front. "JB just chill, man. Ok? Just tell us what happened." His words fell on deaf ears as John B threw out an arm, the hand holding the gun connected to it. The gun struck him on his forehead, causing him to stumble back.
"Nate!" Kie called out.
Nate fell back, against the counter, his forehead bleeding. Kie ran to him, her anger at the back of her mind.
"Are you ok?" She asked him frantically, while moving his hair out of the way of his cut. He nodded, slowly, clutching at his head. JJ and Pope followed John B out of the house.
Kie and Nate were still sat on the floor. Kie then realized what she was doing and stood up. They then heard the noise of a motorbike starting.
"Ward knows about the gold! He killed my dad." They heard faintly from outside. Kie ran out of the house at this, leaving Nate by himself.
A few seconds later the three re-entered the house.
"He's gone."
----------
The four of them were now on the HMS, looking at the Cameron house. "So what now, we just go up to the house, knock on the door and ask, 'Hey, have you seen John B?'." JJ asked them.
"Look he lives at Tannyhill now, it's plausible." Kie argued. "We can play dumb."
"Play dumb?" Nate questioned her.
Pope sighed. "It's pretty late." Kie looked over at him worried.
"Look, I've never seen John B like that. We should honestly be going to the cops." She told them.
"The cops?" JJ asked her.
"And tell them what, Kie? We're worried about our friend 'cause he's going on a rampage, 'cause according to him, Ward Cameron killed Big John? They're not gonna believe us." Nate told her.
Pope cut her off before she could respond. He was looking into the house with the binoculars. "Hey, I see Ward." He announced. Kie walked over to him. "Let me see."
He handed her the binoculars. "Doesn't look dead to me. Ok, let's go home." He said, walking over to the wheel.
"What?" Kie asked him. He looked back at her.
"Well, obviously Mr. Cameron is fine. And, even if John B was here, he isn't now. Plus, I have the biggest, most important moment of my life in six hours." Pope argued
"Yeah, well, our friend is in trouble." Kie told him.
"I'm in trouble! Guys, I haven't been home in three days. My dad's probably put all my shit on the street by now." He said, dejected.
"Ok, so that's it? In a time of need you're just gonna bail, you're just gonna walk away?" She questioned him, upset.
"He could be anywhere, and it's late. So can we just go back, and if we haven't heard anything in the morning, we'll go look while Pope's in his interview." Nate cut in.
Kie looked at him, angry. "What do you need to go home for? Another hook up? That more important than John B right now?" She asked him, while shouting.
"Why do you care what I do?" He fired back at her.
"I don't care, but I hate that you're thinking of yourself when your best friend is missing. You're just gonna leave like you did earlier?" Kie responded.
"You wanna talk about leaving?" He spat at her.
"Guys shut up!" JJ shouted at them.
"No! No, she has no room to talk." Nate snapped back. "You got mad at me for leaving? Where were you when Big John went missing? You weren't there. You weren't there for John B, you weren't there for any of us. Remember your Kook year?" He asked her.
"Nate?" JJ tried to stop him, but his comment fell on deaf ears.
"Yeah, you forgot about us. So don't come at me with your whole spiel about leaving. It shouldn't even matter to you, what happened, 'cause it doesn't to me." Hearing this crushed Kiara. He didn't care, or at least that's what he said.
"Bro, what the hell happened between with you two?" JJ asked them. They both snapped their heads to side, not answering him.
JJ looked right at his brother, confused as to why they were arguing so much. Then it hit him.
"Holy shit!" He said.
Kie rolled her eyes at him, as Nate dropped his shoulders and sighed.
Pope was still confused. "What? What happened?"
JJ was smiling like an idiot. "Oh shit, man."
"JJ, shut up!" Nate's tone forced both him and Pope to stop talking.
Kie looked back at Nate. "So it didn't matter? You absolute asshole." She began to push his chest. JJ jumped up at this. Nate started to grab at her hands to stop her.
"Hey! Hey!" JJ shouted as he pushed them away from each other. "If I'm the one mediating, we've hit rock bottom." He said, sternly, shutting them up.
"Bow. Now, go!" He told Nate, as he walked off. "Pope I'll drop you off." He told him.
"Thanks."
Kie and Nate couldn't even look at each other. They sat on opposite ends of the boat, in their own thoughts as JJ drove off.
