Amara moved to the shotgun seat. She scrolled through the pictures that Elijah had sent him. They were all really pretty that she couldn't help but apologize at Primo's attitude.
'He's jealous.'
She arched an eyebrow with Elijah's observation.
Primo slid into the driver's seat with a gaudy sigh. She didn't glance at him but the repeated sigh was an obvious sign of his irritation.
"What's wrong?" she asked, eyes glued to her phone. She posted the pics and immediately replied to the comments.
"Natasha changed her mind about me. And here I thought, this was over."
"Shouldn't you be happy?"
'Gorgeous girl'
She chuckled at Elijah's comment.
"You're not listening to me," Primo complained as he started the car. "Who is it you're smiling at?"
"Elijah." She peeled her eyes off the screen and turned to him. "Why?"
"You serious?"
Amara wasn't serious but Primo's reaction was too fun to see. She prodded him further. "And if I am?"
"Don't. You're both my friends. It's awkward." His handsome face didn't lose the frown as he continued, "I won't allow it."
Amara scoffed. "What era were you born into that you think friends can't date each other?"
"It's just—"
"And I never dictated you who to date or not to date!"
Primo clicked his tongue. He stayed mute for several minutes before he spoke again. "Fine. Since you're my best friend, I'll tell you."
Her ears perked up with his dire tone. "What?"
"Eli's been in a long-distance relationship for two years. He doesn't even attend our victory parties unless it's an all-boys party. We teased how whipped he was but Elijah doesn't care. His free time would be spent with her or whoever that was. Then, two months ago he started going to parties and even hooked up with girls here and there."
"They broke up?"
"I don't know. He just told me he's free to do whatever he wants now." Primo made a turn to their mansion as the guards opened the gates. "I'm saying... he'll just use you."
Amara rolled her eyes. "You don't know that."
She wasn't certain of Elijah's feelings towards her but she couldn't sense danger from him. He was nice or at least trying to be and his words...
'I admire you'
It didn't sound like a love confession. He had too many blunders for her to consider him as a suitor.
"Seriously? Elijah can't move on that fast," he muttered.
"Time doesn't matter when it comes to love," she shot back. "Look at you with Natasha!"
"I never said I love her!"
"But you will eventually! You didn't even wait a week this time!" Amara shook her head. She completely forgot the point of the conversation but she was saved from arguing further as the car stopped at their house.
She exited the car and trudged to their doorstep.
"Amara!"
Amara huffed as she swiveled to him. "What?"
Primo got out and gestured to a paper bag in his hand. "You don't even want to invite me inside and eat this?"
She crossed her arms. "Did you tell your mom?"
"She knows I'm with you."
Amara flicked her head to the door. "Come on. Just ten minutes and—"
She yelped when she noticed her little brother standing in front of the double doors.
Although 'Little' wasn't a word Amara would associate with him. If she got the pretty genes, Aiken got all of his dad's genes especially the physical attributes. He was only fourteen but he's already 5'5. Just an inch shorter than her.
"You're late," he mumbled, arms folded. "I'll tell Dad."
Amara locked eyes with Primo that he looked at his watch. "For one minute?"
"Still late." Aiken turned around.
She grumbled under her breath as Primo called for Aiken. "We have snacks."
Aiken halted on his tracks. "And what's that?"
"Buffalo wings."
The younger boy snatched the food. His green eyes softened. "Fine. I'll keep quiet."
Amara entered the house with Primo by her side. He rolled his sleeves that the tattoos on his right forearm were revealed. She secretly thought it made him hotter but she'd never tell him that. His ego would surely get bigger.
"How did you know Aiken would be here?" She eyed him with curiosity. "Was it a coincidence you bought his favorite food?"
Primo shrugged. "Do I have to share all of my secrets now?"
She raised an eyebrow. "I never even thought we have secrets."
Primo ignored her comment as they went to the kitchen. Aiken enjoyed his snack while the two of them had tea. They never talked with their attention glued on their phones.
An hour passed before Primo decided to go. Amara trailed after him, deep in thought that she bumped into him.
"Why are you stopping?"
"I meant what I said, Amara." Primo insisted, twisting his body to face her.
"I also meant what I said."
"Amara—"
"I know you're jealous." Amara tucked an errant hair over her ear. She watched in amusement as Primo struggled for words.
His cheeks flushed. "That's not true!"
"Really?" she teased. "There's no one else who knows you better than me. And I know you don't like it when you're not at the center of someone's attention."
Primo harrumphed. "I don't know what you're talking about."
Amara knew where his insecurities came from that she didn't even mind giving in to all of his requests. Elijah could call her 'convenient' or whatever he liked but she was immovable in her decision. She was on Primo's side.
She reached for his hand. "No matter how busy I am, I would still be here, Primo." She grinned and put up her pointing finger. "You know you're always my number one."
He chuckled and brought his arm around her shoulders. "You're so cheesy."
Primo's phone rang with several notifications as they stepped out of the mansion. He swiped it open. "Look, our Tiktok video got so many hearts."
She rolled her eyes. Primo had begged her to do stupid challenges for his TikTok account. She had been adamant about refusing but of course, the boy knew her weaknesses. "You that happy with your hearts?"
He's so vain sometimes she wondered why they were friends.
"Well, fuck you too, random user."
"What?" She glanced at his screen to see that he was browsing the comment section. "Ooh, they said I'm sexy. Facts!"
"You're not."
"You're right. I'm not sexy. I'm very sexy."
Primo frowned at her. His icy gaze surveying her up and down before it stopped between her cleavage.
She suddenly grew conscious at his keen stare. "What?"
"Is that a tattoo?"
Amara looked down to see the pointed end of her North Star tattoo. After knowing her parents' story, it was an easy decision to make. Her dad had helped her draw the design and gave it to her on her birthday.
She scratched at her cheek. "Yeah, well."
"And it's on the sternum?"
"Yes?"
Primo clicked his tongue. He ran his fingers through his hair as his eyebrows knitted. "Shit."
"What?" Amara was confused at his reaction. Her bewilderment doubled when he swiftly kissed her cheek and mumbled a good night.
She followed the car with a perplexed stare.
