I pick at the skin on my fingernails, tossing and turning all night about what happened after our video chat with Scott. He texted us and told us it was Derek and Grayson in his room and they threatened to kill him if he plays in the game on Saturday...

And I fully believe them.

Now I'm two energy drinks deep, standing in Coach's office with Scott to break the news to him. My foot bounces up and down as I feel jittery, forcing myself not to yawn as Coach, Scott, and I all step into his office. Scott begged me to come with him this morning since Coach actually likes me.

"What do you mean, you can't play the game tomorrow night?" Coach asks Scott as he shuts the door behind us, clearly not following.

"I mean, I can't play the game tomorrow night." Scott repeats, shrugging his shoulders.

"You can't wait to play the game tomorrow night?" Coach corrects Scott's statement to his liking.

I rock back and fourth on my feet nervously, I knew this wouldn't go well. Especially not with Jackson out.

"No, Coach, I can't play the game tomorrow night." Scott emphasizes.

I let out puff air quietly through my nose as Coach leans to the side, looking at me. "He's kidding, right?"

I smile sheepishily, ohhh boy. "Uh, no. No, Coach... He can't play Saturday."

"I'm not following." Coach squints at us, very much lost.

I groan internally. Come on, Scott... come up with something.

"I'm having personal issues." Scott tells him.

I nod eagerly. Ooo, that's good!

"Is it a girl?" Coach asks immediately.

"No."

"Is it KS?" He leans forward, whispering.

I roll my eyes, letting out a scoffing noise. "Wha- uh,  agh. Uh, I can hear you." I push past Scott, throwing my arms up. "And I'm a girl." I'm pretty sure he forgets most of the time.

"Is it a guy?" Coach tries the other direction. "You know, our goalie Danny's gay." Coach adds with a small, reassuring nod.

"Yeah, I know, Coach." Scott responds at the same time I say, "Everyone knows that." Scott turns to look at me and I shrug innocently. What? He's like the only person around here who's actually came out of the closet, so far. Everyone knows.

Danny is Jackson's best friend, one of the guys in our grade. Hmm.

I wonder what it's like? Is that weird? Definitely weird. And Jackson's supportive? That's kind of shocking...

"But that's not it." Scott continues, pulling me back to the conversation at hand.

"You don't think Danny's a good-looking guy?" Coach eyes him.

I let out a snort. "Oh, he is." Scott shoots me a 'please stop talking' look. Well, he is! All the good looking ones are gay it seems... I bet one of the Hale's are—Ugh, Kai! Why did you go there? But, statistically, would make sense...

"I think he's good-looking." Scott tries to answer respectfully. "But I like girls. And that's not it, anyway! I... I..." He stampers.

Oh! Hurry Kai, help him...

"What? Is it drugs?" Coach questions. "Are you doing meth?"

"What?!" I exclaim.

"Cause I had a brother that was addicted to meth." Coach continues as my jaw proceeds to fall open. "You should have seen what it did to his teeth." He makes a grabbing motion towards his mouth. "They were all cracked and rotted. It was... It was disgusted."

My nose curls up as I look at Coach horrified. "Well, guess we're never trying meth." I whisper to Scott. His mouth opens and he quicky elbows me. "Ow!" I mutter. He could've broke a rib!

"Oh, my God. What happened to him?" Scott wonders, sympathetically. Oh, guess I should've reacted more like that. Oops.

Coach looks back up at him. "He got veneers." He says like it's obvious. Uh, how were we supposed to know that? "Is that what this is about?" Coach shifts back to Scott. "Are you afraid of getting hurt, McCall?" His eyes light up, thinking he's got it.

"No." Scott answers softly. "I'm having some issues dealing with aggression."

I let out a fake cough into my hand "Understatement." Anddd, I feel a sharp pain in my ribs cage again. Okay fine, that time was fair.

"Well, here's the good news. That's why you play lacrosse. Problem solved." Coach says happily.

I throw my head back, groaning— screaming! on the inside. We're getting... absolutely nowhere here.

"Coach, I can't play the game tomorrow night." Scott tells him more firmly this time.

"And he means it." I stress, pointing at Coach.

"Listen, McCall." Coach puts his hand up before he stands. "Part of playing first line is taking on the responsibility of being first line." He says, looking at me as he shakes his head before looking back at Scott. "Now, if you can't shoulder that responsibility, then you're back on the bench until you're ready." Argh, Coach!

My shoulders deflate. Great.

"If I don't play the game you're taking me off first line?" Scott asks him. Well, duh Scott. I shake my head this time. Doesn't he know anything about how this works?

"McCall." Coach leans forward, pointing at him. "Play the game."

Scott glances at me and I shift my gaze to the floor. The really interested, dingy looking, tile floor.

Well this went well...

"I told you that man does not have 'can't' or 'no' in his vocabulary." I sigh to Scott as we leave Coach's office.

As he opens his mouth to reply his phone chimes. I glance over his arm reading it's from Mama McCall telling him she took off for the game. Aww, that's sweet. No wait! I frown. That must makes everything worse, ugh.

"Hey." Allison greets as she floats down the stairs.

"Hey." Scott lights up instantly. I smile at the interaction.

"Hi." I join, trying not to sound completely bummed at our current circumstance.

"Busy?" She asks.

"Not at all. Why, you free?" I joke causing her to laugh.

"No, no, it's just my mom. She's nothing." Scott answers nonchalantly. I face palm. He somehow pulled her? "I mean, it's nothing." Scott quickly recovers as Allison looks at him a little funny. "I'm never busy for you."

"I like the sound of that." Allison smiles, laughing at him.

"Good one." I say quietly, patting him on the back. "Anyway..." I chime, pushing him closer to her.

"I have to run to French class, but I wanted you to know that I'm coming to see you play tomorrow." She tells him. Oh shoot, should I still be standing here?

"You are?" Scott's shocked. Me, not as much. She seems to like Scott and Lydia managed to drag her to practice. Well, she's about to be reallyyy disappointed.

"And we're all going out afterwards." She adds. "You, me, Lydia, Jackson. It's gonna be great. Kai, you and Stiles come too." She turns to me excitedly.

Oh, wow. I look at her surprised. Now that does shock me. She's so nice. Like actually, genuinely nice. Hmm, it's rare.

"Save me a seat at lunch. I gotta go." She smiles at us before hurrying off.

"Oh, God." Scott lets out quietly, looking like he's gonna be sick.

Ohhh, great. More panic to add to the list.
