Chapter 2
Adam's POV
I hated travelling into the network. At first, you feel like your body is just dissolving but it doesn't hurt, just makes you really dizzy, and then it feels like your body is wrapped in lead, anchoring you down as you reform.
It didn't feel too great. And the welcoming party wasn't too nice either.
As soon as I felt my body form, I heard Ty call out and I felt something sweep under my feet, making me hit the ground with a yelp.
I got to my feet with a groan and looked around as a cruel laugh echoed through the area.
The mainframe looked much like the real world. It was almost like a second, multicoloured layer of our own world. The walls and floor were black with small green numbers running across them every so often, where the decks and computers were were now small orbs of light green light that didn't glow very brightly, green codes going along inside it as well. Files.Though several of the files were now bright red or lay in tatters of red coding on the ground. The result of a virus.
Ty was on the other side of the room and tried to run over to me, but a bright red flash of light raced past him one of the small tendrils coming off it catching Ty's legs and sending him flying into one of the walls. It bent back slightly, flashing with green coding as it repaired itself and Ty got up with a growl of annoyance.
"Well, what do we have here?" The same voice that was laughing asked with glee. "Two glitches getting their noses where they don't belong!"
The voice seemed to be coming from the bright red light which stopped at the door to where the hallway in the real world would be and took shape.
Soon, a boy with dark brown hair and thick black glasses stood in its place. He wore a red and grey checked flannel shirt over a white t-shirt, dark blue jeans and grey runners. Beneath his glasses, his eyes could be seen, which glowed a bright red and were filled with dark red coding.
A virus. A worm to be precise.
Keeping my eyes on the virus, I drew my sword and glared at him. Ty did the same and growled, "Where're your buddies?"
The worm smirked and called out, "Hey Gizzy! Look who's come to try and spoil our fun!"
For a moment, nothing happened until one of the orbs of red light behind Ty began to glow and Jason yelled into our earpieces, "Ty! Hit the deck!"
Not hesitating, Ty threw himself to the floor as the orb shattered and another streak of red light shot out of it, going straight through the space Ty's head would have been and stopping next to the first virus.
"Aww... Almost blew his brains out..." The second worm whined as it took shape. This one had black hair in dreadlocks and bright red, code-filled eyes. He wore a plain grey t-shirt, a light grey hoodie over the top and darker grey jeans with checkered sneakers.
Both did look human but that was where the similarities ended. These two wouldn't hesitate to kill in cold blood. All that left was the Trojan horse, which could be anywhere... Yippee.
The first one smirked at us "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get another chance. These two don't seem like much trouble."
"You wanna bet?" Ty growled, raising his sword.
As Ty and the virus spoke, well, threatened each other, I slowly began to tap on my microphone to spell out a phrase: 'Fix the firewall'
"Way ahead of you," Jason spoke back calmly. If the firewall is repaired, then it'll keep the viruses inside the server until they're dealt with.
The second virus, Gizzy, smirked at Ty as he pulled out a red dagger "Nothing to bet. All that's gonna happen is we kill you. Nothing too hard."
At that, the virus lashed out at Ty, dissolving into coding slightly until only the human outline remained. Ty sidestepped the virus and hissed in pain as the dagger sliced across his arm and left a large cut spilling with small green coding.
"Catch me if you can slowpoke." Gizzy teased, running through the hallways of the floor.
Ty looked at the virus and growled, dissolving slightly like the virus except with green coding and chased after him, only at a slower pace.
Glitches have different abilities in the mainframe, it helps us when fighting viruses. Ty's speed and agility are much faster than a normal glitch, which is why he's best suited to fighting worms. Only we still can't be faster than them, believe me, Ty's been trying for years without success. Another reason why he hated them so much.
Before I could do anything to help Ty, the second virus smiled and lashed out at me with his own sword. I pulled back just before it could do any damage aside from slicing through my coat.
The worm turned and smirked at me, getting ready to attack again as it came to a halt. "This should be easy."
I couldn't help but smirk back and I gripped my sword with two hands, yellow coding began to come off the sword and I pulled it apart with my hands with ease. The sword divided cleanly in half down the middle, both halves solidifying to become a full sword. Now I had two swords, my preferred weapons for fighting.
The worm narrowed his eyes at me and said,"Aren't you full of surprises?"
I just held one of my swords out to him and said, "There's plenty more where that came from, worm."
The virus growled and charged at me, sword out and ready. I stood still and side-stepped as he reached me, one of my swords catching his while the other went for his neck. He swiftly ducked, disengaging our swords before lashing out again. I blocked it but the worm moved out of my reach before I could hit him.
I really hoped that the worm didn't try to run. I wasn't in the mood for a game of cat and mouse.
As he ran for me again, sword out and ready, I caught it with both of mine and twisted, forcing it from his grip and sweeping my legs under him, knocking him to the ground. He rolled and got to his feet, barely missing my blade as he drew a dagger.
Before I could properly react, he moved inside the range of my swords and slashed his dagger for my neck. I felt it split the air just in front of me as I leaned back, reversing my grip on one of my swords. I swung the hilt as hard as I could for the worm's head but it only gave him a glancing blow as he ducked.
Quickly, I kicked him. He stumbled back a step and I thrust my other blade deep into his chest. As I pulled out the blade, the worm dissolved into red particles that faded to nothing.
"Nice!" a voice said behind me. I turned and saw Ty jog up to me, his sword at his side.
I smiled at him for a moment but then frowned "What happened to the other worm?"
Ty shrugged "Caught him. Killed him. Wasn't too hard. What about you?"
I blinked at Ty. "Dead. What else?" How the heck did Ty catch a worm? Yes, he'd been working on his speed but he was still nowhere close to their average speed.
Ty nodded calmly "Good. Well, we better find that Trojan horse then."
"Riiiight..." I said slowly, reaching my hand up to my earpiece and speaking into the mouthpiece. "Jason, you hear me?"
"Yeah," Jason's voice replied, "What do you need?"
"A layout of the area... Also can you tell me how many viruses are left? And where they are?"
Jason's voice was silent for a minute before he said "Hmmm... Two. Ty's chasing that worm on the other side of the floor and you should be very close to the Troj- Oh God! Duck!"
As he said the last part, I heard the sound of a sword being drawn and knelt down quickly as I felt a sword swing over my head, barely missing me and slicing off a few hairs on my head.
I turned and raised one of my swords to block as Ty brought his own down with a deafening clash of metal against metal. Ty growled in annoyance as he tried pushing down on my sword, his eyes flashing dark red with coding. Yep... Not Ty.
"You wanna cut the games, Trojan?" I growled, standing up and forcing the imposter backwards.
A smile crept onto his face as his appearance faded to bright red coding before solidifying to look like someone very different. A boy with bright pink hair now stood in front me, wearing a white shirt with a pink vest and matching pink jeans. "See, games are my specialty," he mocked with a smirk.
"Guess it's no surprise you're here then," I said back. "Why pink?"
The trojan grinned. "It suits my personality." Then he attacked.
The trojan was a lot more skilled than the worm, and stronger too. We crossed swords, matching the other's strength, but he was slowly beating me. His hits were hard and fast and I struggled to hold my own against them, especially since my arms were already tired from fighting the worm. If Ty could hurry up and get over here - the real Ty - that would be really helpful.
"Nice Ty!" I heard Jason say through my earpiece. "Adam's taking on the Trojan back where you started."
"On my way," I heard Ty say. I ducked and stumbled slightly as the Trojan's sword just missed my head and I took several steps back, trying to gain some space between us. The trojan stalked closer, obviously noting the tired way I held my swords.
"Giving up so soon?" he asked with a triumphant grin.
I smiled back sweetly "No..." I replied as Ty circled around the corner sharply, raising his sword and driving it straight through the trojan's back. "I don't really like 'giving up'."
The trojan froze at that and looked down at the blade prodding through him in shock. As Ty pulled out the sword, his body began to dissolve into red particles that fading out with a wail until nothing remained.
Ty huffed and sheathed his sword. "Finally."
I smiled at him. "Hey Jason. How's it looking?" I asked into my microphone.
There was a crackle on the intercom as Jason replied. "Almost done... There!" he said with a triumphant voice. Several of the red, cracked or shattered orbs around us managed to reform and return to a glowing green colour.
I grinned. "That's what I'm talking about!"
"I've restored all the files I can. The last few will have to be destroyed sadly but that definitely went better than I hoped," Jason replied happily
Ty laughed, "Nice one Jason! We'll be out soon!"
Ty and I then spent the next few minutes sweeping through the server. Any damaged or corrupted files we saw had to be destroyed, which we did by slicing through them with our weapons, causing them to break apart into small red particles.
Once we were sure the area was cleared, Ty pressed down on his headphones and I did the same with my amulet. The same process occurred as entering and once I opened my eyes, I could see that we were back in the real world. A few of the computers were still a little worse for wear, but the rest were otherwise ok.
Jordan came over to us down an aisle of computers smiling widely. "Thank you so much! I don't know how I can repay you for this."
I smiled and just shook his hand. "It's our job Mr Sparkles, no need for any repayment."
As we headed back down to the ground floor and out of the elevator, many people came over to thank us for our work before heading back up to the floor to get resorted.
"Remember, if you have any other problems, you know when to call us," I told Jordan with a smiled as we left the building.
"I will, thanks again!" Jordan called back before heading back inside.
Ty and I waved back to him as we started walking down the street. "Ok," I began. "What's our next job?"
Ty got out his phone and scrolled through. "Uh, routine check at Preston's Accounting," he finally read. "Apparently there's been some strange glitching and they want us to check it out."
"Easy. Where is it?"
"Three blocks from here. Let's go."
