I watched the ridiculously slow clock as it clicked each second. The red stick on its face was so infuriating, I wanted to smash the clock, rip off the second hand, snap it into a million pieces and burn them. And then, probably feed the ashes to a hungry wolf.

Violent, I know. But detention is boring, especially when your partner in crime is sleeping. And your enemy is too busy to try to inflict any kind of pain on you – so you can't even start a fight.

I tossed the papers around, juggled them for a while, rocked my chair and even went to the extent of counting the strands of hair on Ron's head. I went up to a twenty before he woke up and slapped my hand away.

I pulled out my phone, and texted Ron.

Billy: He's right next to you.

But he's sleeping. Wouldn't want to disturb him.

Billy: Are you being —

Dead serious, Billy. I'd hate to disturb Ron.

Billy: I'm starting to wonder –

No, you can't. You are my head. You can't doubt my sanity.

Billy: okay.

Ron jerked awake, started by the sudden buzz in his pocket. I shoved a fist into my mouth to keep myself from laughing. He accidentally hit his head on the table while waking up and jerked back with so much force that he lost his balance and fell down.

I gave in to my laughter. I threw my head back – almost losing my balance and started laughing at his condition.

"Not funny, Chad." He grunted, steam blowing out of his ears. (Well, I saw the steam)

"B – but i-it is!" I said, trying to form words. I think all he heard is, 'Bhaithahagaisbwahaha' or something like that. Whatever he heard, he glares at me as if I had just committed the greatest sin.

I helped him up just in time when the bell rang — telling us that detention is over. The supervisor was sleeping on the table, unaware of what just happened. Before leaving the room, I couldn't resist my urge to do something.

"Ron, you go ahead." I said as he opened the door and waited for me.

He smirked, as if he knew what I would do. I slowly tip
- toed towards the snoring teacher.

"THE ALIENS ARE COMING! THE SKY IS FALLING!!" I yelled in her ear and dashed out of the room, slamming the door shut behind me.

I ran and caught up with Ron, chucking as I heard her distant reaction, 'What!?'

"We have practice today." Ron said, diverting the mood.

"I know. We just have four more months. We should start go using on our strategic training now and lessen the focus on pure strength."

"Yeah. About the travel..." He trailed off, stating another problem.

"Let's start off in your truck after two weeks."

"Why wait for two weeks?"

"We need to talk to Max and test everything before we leave." I said, as we passed through the school gates.

I slammed open Brad's door and barged inside, with the thought of pulling him out to the gym.

He jumped from his seat and snapped his head towards me. His face relaxed when he saw that it was just me. Without sparing another second he faced his book again, as if trying not to be seen by me.

"What are you doing?" I asked, folding my arms.

"Homework." He said shortly.

I walked over to him, with the idea of pushing him out of the chair.

He held his hand out as soon as I reached his table, as if reading my mind. His eyes were still fixed on the book as he furiously scribbled in the numbers.

"Calculation mistake." I pointed out.

He grunted, and then scratched off a number and corrected it.

"We have work to do. This can wait." I said, slamming his book shut.

He looked at me and that was when I realised that his face was tear stained. That was when I noticed that he looked ten years older. His expression was... Scared.

"Brad?" I asked gently, shocked at his situation.

What happened?

"Yeah?" He responded, trying to sound peppy. Trying.

He sounded like a cheerleading duck that had choked on marshmallows.

"What are you afraid of?" I asked, crouching down so I was next to his chair.

"Huh?" He frowned, deepening the worry lines in his forehead.

I fisted my hand lightly and knocked on his head twice. "Anything in there?" I said loudly and I faced the wall, showing him my ear.

He shoved me back and I stumbled. After gaining my balance, I asked again, "What are you afraid of?" I asked again, looking up at him with my arms on the floor, supporting me.

"Me." He sighed, looking at the ceiling.

I kicked his chair to get his attention to me and not the beautiful wall above him. "I don't blame you, buddy. Even Shrek says that."

"What if we can't save –"

"How many times do I have to tell you to stop worrying about it? It'll be fine, really. We will save our mom."

"Can you stop saying our mom as if we were born out of the same belly?" He said coldly.

I was taken aback by his statement. I opened my mouth to say something but the shock just didn't allow me to.

"She is my mom, Chad. Get the point. Losing her is harder for me than it is for you."

"But I'm trying to help." I cracked out, trying to fight my astonishment.

"Thanks. But don't ever say that even if we don't save her, it'll be alright because I have two mothers now. Your mom is not my mom. We are different. Get it through your thick skull." He spat.

"Aren't we like brothers?" I asked in a soft voice.

"Keyword: we are like brothers. But that doesn't change the fact that you can't care –"

"Of course I can. I care about you more than –"

"It doesn't work that way, Chad. Look, I get that you're worried about me for some reason and I am very grateful for your help. Thank you so much for giving me hope." He said, robotically.

I raised an eyebrow at him and gave him a blank stare.

He smiled sheepishly and darted his eyes all over the room. Anywhere but my face that basically screamed, 'I am not buying it!'

"We will save her, Brad. Even if I have to give my life for it." I said, truly meaning it.

"Thanks." He said, smiling a bit. Obviously, that was not genuine but I can't really sit inside his head and tell him what to think.

Billy: You can always prove your point.

Exactly what I'm doing, Billy. We will save our mother no matter what.

Billy: You said 'our'.

I know.
