Chapter 5: Goodbye.
(Art up there is by me! ^^ (oh and my DeviantArt account is English-iz-funky, since I haven't been posting much in my artbook))
Time had passed. Or, at least Red believed that time had passed. Where he was there were no days or nights; no clocks to tell him how long it had been. So he had to rely on his own sense of time, which was how well he could remember the last time he was NOT in the Anti-void. Which, as he squinted into the white light of the Anti-void, Red began to find it harder and harder to recall the memory. So going by that logic, he just assumed it had been a while.
Red sat a foot or two away from the sleeping Error, rubbing a yarn-like blue string between his fingers. He kept his eyes on the blue streaks running down the other's cheeks, really wanting to touch them. He wanted to know if they felt anything like the string it came from, but he knew he couldn't because if he did he'd probably wake Error up... and then the glitch would start babbling on about the AUs again. In short, Error and Red had talked for a very long time. Sure, a few hateful comments were thrown around, but what would one expect from the two? Both had every reason to hate each other. Red mostly just wanted to get out while Error just wanted the other dead. But despite that, when Red asked questions; Error would answer. It had gotten to a point where Error began telling tales of old and destroyed AUs, he would talk about the many differences and things other AUs had in common with Red's universe. He would even describe his adventures while exploring certain AUs before -despite Red's horror and curiosity- describing in detail how he'd completely erased -killed- them from existence, while also going on about the original universe, Undertale.
Red sighed, still feeling slightly tense from a Horrortale story Error had told. The glitch had put on this malicious voice -if it could get any worse- while he told it, even putting in the effort to impersonate the cracking sound Sans's bones had made when Undyne crashed her spear into his skull. Ehg...
Red had put down the string, something new caught his attention. Sitting up, he stared at his arm intently. Something was different. Something buzzed, hurt, stung, but only sometimes. He had no bruise or cuts, in fact as he looked closer at his arm he realized that it looked completely normal, nothing should've been wrong. Well, as normal as it could get. There was a small scar on the side of his wrist, nothing bad, he'd just gotten it from a small tumble with his brother. But as he looked at it, something changed. Moved. Blinking, he slapped his arm in panic- hissing at how hard he'd hit himself. Then he looked back down. Oh, if only he had known what would've happened if he looked down, he would've sworn to never make such a glance for the rest of his skeleton life. If he'd know that what he'd see if he looked down... it would change him completely.
But it was too late. He had already done it, his sockets widening in terror when he saw what was on his arm. A small, grey 'ERROR' message flickered back and forth against his wrist, making his breath speed up and his head feel dizzy. Only one thought came to his mind; !@#$%!!!
Dangit! Red couldn't just sit here and watch it get worse! He had to do something, he had to act- he had had to find a way to make it go away, and it had to be Now. Whatever was happening to him, he believed it was because of either the Anti-void... or Error. However, his bets were on the latter. He took a breath, thinking back to a conversation they had earlier before Error had fallen asleep.
"So, you live here?" Red had asked.
"Yyyyyep"
"...does anyone else live here?"
"Eh, not that I know of. Of course sometimes there are a few stole-aways who accidentally end up here in some sort of portal or teleportation malfunction-ish disaster, I usually kill them though," Error said with a frown, however it didn't show a trace of regret, only boredom. This was one of the big things Red had noticed about the other... How Error could go on about how he kills people without a single care in the world. It was like he didn't exactly understand how absolutely despicable taking another's life was; or maybe he was just so used to it that he just didn't care.
Red glanced over at the other. "Why do you kill them?" He asked.
"Well, because if they stay here long enough they'll turn into some sort of... they uhh..." Error suddenly seemed more hesitant and unsure about... something, he kept glancing over at Red with a slight worried look in his eyes.
"Error, what do they turn into?" Red said in a demanding tone, hoping to get the other to spit out whatever he was trying to say. He wanted to know what would happen. The other paused. "uHm- did you know that almost all monsters who know about the multiverse are Sans copies and humans?"
Red stood up, "Oh no you don't. You aren't going to change the topic on me that easily, pal."
"No- I uh.. Ok then it's because I can't remember, Y-yea! I'm just so good at killing them it just hasn't happened in a long time! A-and I forgot!" Error claimed with a short cringe.
Red's eye socket twitched. "...You can't remember."
"Yeap."
"You know, you tend to 'not remember' a lot of things."
"Blame the Anti-void, not me."
Loathe The great King Asgore himself- this why Error killed those 'stole-aways'!? Red was beginning to glitch like Error! Cursing his imagination, he began thinking about how it would happen. How long would it take? Was it fast? Would his hands become different colors like Error's? Would his eyelights change as well? Along with the color of his sockets?? What color would his skull be? red? How convenient would that be, he thought sourly.
As he thought more and more about it, the glitches, the static- The more his breath began to speed up, and the more he'd try to rub off the single glitching letters on his arm. When the bones on his wrist began to turn a dark purple, he stopped. Sitting in his own head wouldn't do anything to get him out of the Anti-void. He had to do something- but what? As far as Red knew he had never owned the ability nor the knowledge to create portals like Error, and apparently that was the only way to get out. Plus even though his hands and legs weren't tied up, his soul still was. He could not summon a single speck of magic no matter how much he willed it.
But Error could.
Turning to the sleeping skeleton, Red frowned. The glasses weren't doing much help in convincing the other due to Error only fighting back with arguments, not magically making an exit like Red would have wanted. Error also made it very clear at the beginning that He would kill Red the second he got the chance... but what if Red could somehow convince him to let him go... in a different way? How?
Closing his sockets, he shook his head angrily. Uhhgg! Why was this so difficult!? He wished he could just sleep this whole thing off like he used to, when his brother was being a jerk or when the house had gotten egged, or when Error went on a rant about some stupid stars...
His thoughts were quickly interrupted as a glitchy voice spoke out. "...Nightmare? What are you doing here?" Error? Red spun around at the voice, seeing Error not asleep but looking up at some- other Sans? They had what Error would call the 'Traditional Sans look;' with a pair of slippers barely hanging onto their feet, a jacket with no fur on the hood -Red's did have fur on the hood- some old soccer shorts and a tank top underneath. The skeleton's hands were stuffed into their pockets- but what made Red want to vomit was not only the constant feeling of dread when he looked at the skeleton, but the fact that from head-to-toe this skeleton was covered in thick black tar. The tar kept forming these goopy-looking tentacles that seemed to ooze out of the other's back, swaying back and forth in a calm manner through the air. Red didn't even get a chance to count them all due to the odd movements they performed constantly. Even though he hasn't been able to actually see another monster in a long time, this... was weirder and creepier than any other Sans he's ever encountered, and the only one so far other than this was Error.
The goopy Sans paused, glancing at Error before looking over at Red, and then looking back down at Error. "...You're stuck, I presume?" They said in a deep and husky voice. Error smiled at the other, so much that Red couldn't tell if the glitch was legitimately glad that the other was there or if he was just cringing at the other's presence. "Listen Nightmare I'm sorry I got your number blocked, Red took my phone and I-"
"Shut up." The goopy skeleton snapped, and Error immediately went quiet. Wow, Red thought. This guy must be even more insane than Error if he could just tell him what to do like that.
Then it hit Red. He took Error's phone... He blocked this guy too... No way! This was the nerd who liked cats! Baby kittens!! "....Let me guess, was it that guy over there?" Nightmare frowned, not even sparing a glance at Red who was literally the only other monter there. Why should he treat this guy like he was so high and mighty when he knows something this valuable? Not only that But Error also likes kittens, so technically he had all the power he needed. He just had to keep his cool- or at least regain as much of it as he could. Oorrrr they might just kill him to keep the secret from coming out... Maybe for now he won't tell the creepy blob that he knows, he must be patient. When he's out of the Anti-void and around other monsters he'll threaten to reveal the secret, then he'll get his home back, get a thousand gold as well as a promise that none of them would ever return to his world ever again and a formal apology from Error.
Now that he had a somewhat ok plan, he spoke up, interrupting the conversation Error and Nightmare were having while Red daydreamed about how grateful his brother would be when he -technically- saves the world. "So, Nightmare was it?" Red asked, Catching the other's attention.
"...Correct, I'd assume Error told you?" Nightmare remarked, turning and walking over to him. Red gave the other a half smile, he had to act casual. "Nah, I stole his phone and went through it a bit. You don't mind right?" He stopped, realising that if the other connected the dots he just might as well have mentioned how he found his special little piece of information. Red was so dumb. Absolutly, positivly freaking dumb. He might as well start saying his prayers before going into the afterlife! "He called you a nerd and blocked you!" Error suddenly blurted out, making Red flinch. Nightmare frowned, giving Red a glare. "A nerd huh?" Quickly he tried to remember what words you were supposed to say before you began the prayer. Something, something, God please don't send me to hell?
"Listen, if I'd known that you were such a powerful skeleton like yourself I wouldn't have called you such a thing in the first place, really," Red said.
Nightmare only let out a short growl before turning back to Error. "Where'd you find this dumb loser?" Red dropped the smile.
"Underfell. He was clueless about the AU's until I taught him." Error spat, probably disappointed that he hadn't been untied yet.
"Yet he still managed to mess you up... hah!" Nightmare gave a wheezy laugh.
"Shut up, I was saving him for later so that I could kill him! But then he escaped my strings and attacked me when I wasn't looking!" Error snapped, trying to sit up.
"You," Nightmare said suddenly, walking over to Red. "You look tuff and simple minded, wanna join my gang? I can take you to any AU you desire," Red was about to ask what the heck this gang would be about when Error beat him to it.
"Ah- Hey! You can't do that, I still have to kill him first!" Error yelled out, only for those disgusting tentacles to rip him from the floor and bring him up to both Nightmare and Red. They held him only a few inches from the floor, but Error still struggled. "Let me go!! I'll rip you to shreds- I swear!!"
Nightmare only frowned. "How about a deal?"
To Red's surprise, Error stopped struggling with a huff. "Fine... just untie me firs-"
"It's a simple price to pay really, You leave mister phone-stealer to me and then I'll untie you." Nightmare said with a sly smirk.
Error's face mushed up into a scowl. "Uhhg- Fine! But only because being a part of your gang is worse than Death himself." He muttered, making Red feel a little worried about this whole gang thing. Shouldn't he have a choice in this??
"Then it's a deal. Speaking of which, Is he still bugging you?" Nightmare asked as he set Error down on his feet. He retracted his tentacles after loosening the strings just enough that Error could slip his wrists right through them.
"Yea..." The glitch said with a pout as he threw the strings aside and bent down to free his feet.
Red froze, the deal meant that Error wouldn't kill him right? Great Asgore this felt so odd, something inside of Red didn't feel quite right now that Error was free. And also apparently death is a person now?
Nightmare sighed, glancing over at the vast emptiness that surrounded them. "I'll make sure to threaten him when I see him."
"Sure," Error muttered. He stood up, crossing his arms as he gave Red a glare. "Get him out of here would you? It's getting harder and harder not to snap his neck." Nightmare smirked. "alright then," Suddenly the tentacles started reaching towards Red, making him take a hesitant step back.
"Wait!" Red yelled, and they stopped.
"What?" Nightmare hissed.
Cursing himself for what he was about to say, Red spoke out. "I- I need to talk to Error first." Red muttered, not even stealing a glance at Error's confused expression. Nightmare raised a non-existent brow at him, letting the tentacles retreat behind him. "Ok then, go ahead."
There was a long pause.
"I meant that I needed to talk to him alone." Red said with a growl. Letting out an annoyed sigh, Nightmare turned and began walking away from them, pausing to glance back at Red and Error. "When you think I'm far away enough, start talking, and fast, or else I'll get bored... and when I get bored, I get grumpy, and when I get grumpy..."
"Yea yea keep walking." Error spat, watching as the other turned and continued to trot away. Error didn't look at Red, but he could still tell that the other wasn't happy with this. "What do you want?" The glitch spat. Red paused, hesitating. "I want my AU back." He muttered.
The glitch immediately took a step away from him, turning to face the other with a glare. "Oh here we go again! How you want your stupid little AU and brother back- well let me remind that thick skull of yours that it's. not. happening."
"You freaking killed them! So now you're going to bring them back whether it's the last thing I do!" Red yelled as he began to feel his magic build up, making his face feel warm. Error must've freed Red's soul while they were talking with Nightmare... Bad move.
"Over my dead body!" Error spat.
"Oh REALLY? Then I guess that I'll just have to kill you like you killed the rest of them!!" Red yelled, Error looked like he was about to say something, but Red wasn't finished.
"You just go around killing whoever you want without a care in the world- Stomping on anyone that gets 'in your way' And RIPPING them to bits as if they were NOTHING!" he spat. "How can you just live with yourself like that?! Or!" he continued, his tone venomous, how long had it been? months? weeks? Of pain and anger and confusion welling up inside him, "Maybe you're just insane. Maybe you enjoy doing this murder-y bullcrap. Face it, you LIKE being a disgusting horrible glitch-freak that everyone hates- You ENJOY it!"
"SHUT UP!!"
Red's jaw shut tight, taking a few angered breaths as his magic calmed down. He must've summoned a sharpened bone in his hand while he was yelling...
Error glared at him, his hands balled up into fists. "SHUT. UP!" He repeated, taking a step away from the other.
"Ha! So that's what you..." Red stopped, his next insult coming to a halt as Error turned away from him. "Come up with..." What... was this? Why couldn't he get the words out anymore?
"Leave."
Red stood, watching the other's back. Error sounded serious. Before Red turned away, he glanced back at the glitch.
"Goodbye, Error."
The other didn't respond. Red turned away to go find Nightmare, but as he did something grabbed him by his feet, making him fall. For a second he seemed to have gone deaf, or underwater. If he did, it was quick, because before he knew it he was back in dry air, and he could hear a bird squawking in the distance. Wait, a BIRD? As Red blinked, he realized that he definitely wasn't in the Anti-void anymore.
Nightmare appeared from the portal and stood exactly where Red was, smirking. "You've gotten better at holding back your emotions so that I won't feed off of them anymore, in fact it's almost hurting my own feelings with how hard you try."
Ignoring the other's remark, Error stuffed his hands into his pockets. "Dang it, he still has my glasses..." Error hissed. "Man I hate that guy,"
"Yes, I know. I know..."
Red sat up in a dark and black forest, not a single bush or leaf in sight. The trees left long, scraggly shadows across the ground. The soil had become rock dry. Looking up, he sucked in a breath at the blood red sky seemed to loom above him. The air smelled like smoke and cold hard metal, and... fire? Something was definitely burning.
"Welcome to my humble realm." A voice spoke out, making Red jump to his feet. Nightmare stood only a few feet away from him with a wide smirk on his face. "For now you will be staying in the dungeons until I need you, Killer will show you how things work around here." As Nightmare said this, he jabbed one of his tentacles into the floor, making another one of those dark portals in its place. A Sans walked out of it, holding a knife. As far as Red could tell this guy looked pretty much like the original Sans, only he had a black sweater underneath his jacket and a red target on his chest. However, something annoyingly familiar caught Red's eye. Similar to Error's blue tear marks, Killer had dark black globs constantly dripping down his face. "You called, boss?" he said in a slithery, snarky voice.
"Yes, this is..." Nightmares paused.
"The name's Red," Red said as he stood up, stuffing his hands into his pockets. He paused as he felt the rim of Error's glasses touch his finger.
"Ah, of course. I'm going to assume that Error named you." Red paused, confused as Nightmare continued, looking over at Killer with a grin.
"Red will be our newest member. Show him around for me will you?"
Killer nodded, giving him a goofy salute, "Of course boss!" He said with a smile. Red frowned. For a dark place like this, the guy seemed to be enjoying himself too much. Speaking of which, where was he? No matter how many of Error's AU stories Red could account for he had never heard of anything about a world with dark red skies... except for...
Suddenly a hand reached up and grabbed the collar of his shirt, lifting him off the ground. "So, how'd ya get in cahoots with the Boss?" Killer said, his tone darker that Red had remembered it being. Alarmed, Red quickly searched the woods around them for the darker, but Nightmare was nowhere to be found. leaving only Red and Killer in the middle of nowhere in some dark and creepy forest.
Red roughly shoved the other away from him, standing with a bone summoned in his hand as the other took a step back. The other pulled out a knife.
...There was a pause before he realized that the other was waiting for him to answer his previous question. "...Well, I kicked the destroyer's arse when he destroyed my AU, so back off." Red hissed, taking a step to the side as Killer did the same. It was as if they were dancing as they paced around in a circle. "Destroyer of worlds huh?" Killer hissed, his smile growing bigger. Another step to the left. "Yea, I even have a souvenir." Red smirked, he continued to step to the side as he fidgeted with the glasses in his pocket.
"Hah, no way! Show me!" Killer said with a grin, making Red uneasy, yet he still felt like he had prove it now. Halting, Red pulled out the glasses with a sinister smile on his face. "Oh, this- HEy!!" Before he could even finish his sentence they were quickly ripped away from him. Killer leaped back, holding the glasses up to his face. He opened and closed them as if they were some sort of new invention he had never seen before. Red summoned a blaster, aiming it at the thief. "Give them back before I burn you to a crisp!"
The other only stopped and jumped to the side, turning to run. "Finders keepers, losers weepers! Haha!" He yelled as he ran off, far out of range for the gaster blaster to be able hit him. Red de-summoned the weapon with an angry yell, running after him.
Sadly for him, Killer knew the dark forest like the back of his hand, running, jumping, and dodging branches as if they were nothing but a breeze. Red, on the other hand, was more of a big fat pig compared to the other. He swore he ran into every single branch and stumbled over every tree root, and by the time Killer had finally stopped running, Red had to have taken a full minute to catch up. He stumbled into a clearing, panting.
"Hey, check it out." Killer said casually, making Red look up.
Woah.
Standing right infront of them a huge dark building stood, surrounded by black-bricked towers and old empty water fountains. A grand staircase led to a huge door, -Red could only assume that it was the front door- the building even appeared to have at least ten floors! Well, based on the number of windows that seemed to just keep on going up... ignoring the minor holes, spiked vines, and crumbling bricks that seemed to cover the building.
Killer twirled the glasses around his finger, grinning. "Pretty big, isn't it? Too bad we're locking you in the dungun."
Red paused, turning towards a twig that had snapped behind him, "What do ya-"
Wack!
thump...
