"Table number five, Karine."
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at her. "Yes, Ma'am."
She glared at me before walking off to what I presume is her office and when the door closed behind her, I straightened up and rolled my eyes, pushing my eyeglasses up. Our manager, Regina, really is a total bitch but because I need my job and money, I just tried to get along with her. But it's no use. She's a bitch and she's very bossy.
"Having a rough day?" Annie, one of my co-workers, said as she passed by me, holding a tray full of used plates and glasses. She's the kind of girl who's sweet and nice but once you get on her dark side, all sugar will melt because of her spiceness and sassiness. There was a time when a customer tried hitting on her and she flipped him off and scared the poor man. That's the time when I told myself that I need to be friends with her because she's damn awesome.
"Oh yeah. And it's not even yet half of the day." I said as I placed my sprayer and cleaning towel in my basket and placed it on the shelf under the cashier register.
She looked at me with sympathy but afterwards, she grinned at me. "It'll get better."
Before completely walking away, she yelled, "Table five!" and made me snap of out my senses and I rushed to table five, taking their orders.
"Will that be all?" I asked the woman as she feeds her baby with milk. The baby took the bottle and grinned at me and I couldn't help but swoon and grin back.
The woman caught my grin and she smiled at me and nodded. "I take it you like children?"
I nodded vigorously. "I don't just like them, I love them. They're just too adorable."
"If that'll be all, I'll be back with your order after twenty minutes."
"Great!" She mused and I just smiled at her before punching in her order in the cashier.
I went to the order window and clipped the order before tapping on the bell and going back to my work.
After four hours of working, the clock struck 12, my lunch break. This is one of the things that I'm grateful for in my job. Since I've been working here for quite awhile already, I'm one of the first workers of this resto, and the longer you've worked in the resto, the better the hour of your lunch break is. And I'm very lucky to have been one of the workers to have the 12 o'clock break because at this hour, the resto is packed. It's hard to move around to work and do your job and there's a bigger chance of getting shout at by the customers because they're hungry and because it's lunch.
I removed my apron and my hairnet from my hair before grabbing my jacket from the jacket rack outside our locker room and heading out. As I stepped outside, I removed my hair tie, letting my wavy chestnut hair fall down my shoulders. I let my hand run through it, removing the tangles and combing it. I cross the road and entered Brothers Burgers. I'm not in the mood to drive to McDonald's right now so I guess BB would do. Besides, their burgers are delicious, too.
After ordering, I grabbed my order number before sitting on a booth at the farthest part of the place. Once I've settled down, I fished out my phone from my pants and opened my Facebook.
The first thing that I saw in my news feed is my face--no, scratch that, my twin's face. My news feed is full of her photos, her band and her photoshoot photos. Her jet black hair is shining under the spotlight, and even if the photo's quality isn't that good, her toothy smile still stood out, her lips painted red. Her eyelashes are a bit longer than usual and I guess she has false eyelashes on, but nonetheless, she's still the same Kaline. The Kaline that I grew up with, the Kaline that was there for me when no one was around.
Kaline is part of the rising band Silhouette Aces. We both auditioned for the band but she was the only one who got in, but even so, I'm still very happy for her. She's more talented than me. And besides, who would want to have a singer and violinist like me if they could have a total performer?
I continued scrolling down my news feed, scanning through statuses and articles when one article from the official Facebook page of Silhouette Aces caught my attention because of its headline:
SILHOUETTE ACES HINTS ON NEXT WORLD TOUR
I heard my number being called so I stood up and got my food. As I munched on my burger and fries, I read the said article. It says that their male vocalist, Jio Anderson, said in an interview that they're taking a break before doing something "big" for their fans. However, their fans came up with the theory that they're having a world tour and that they're excited for it.
I stood up from my seat and walked out of BB, crossing the road and entering the resto once again. With a huff, I pulled up my hair into a bun before tucking it in a hairnet and tied my apron.
With a smile on my face, I looked around and saw a guy raising his hand and I took out my notepad and pen, ready to take his order. Just then, someone grabbed my arm and I turned to look at the person. It's Will, one of my co-workers. He usually takes over the cashier and financial stuff.
"Can we switch for a while?" He asked as he pointed his thumb at the cashier. "I'm so sick of seeing numbers all day. I need a break."
I nodded at him and smiled. "Sure. Here, take my notepad and pen. Oh, and that guy from table three is calling to order."
He smiled at me and muttered thanks before going off. I entered the counter and sat in front of the cashier.
A few minutes after several clicks and taps here and there on the register, my phone buzzed. I set it on vibrate mode and now it's sending jolts of ticklish waves throughout my body and I flinched. Looking around, I fished out my phone and I saw that an unregistered number is calling. And because the bossy bitch isn't around, I answered the call and put it against my ear. "Hello?"
"Good morning, is this Ms. Kal--I mean, Ms. Karine Derricks?" the guy from the other line said. I slowly nodded and mentally slapped myself for not realizing that I'm on the phone. "Uh, yeah. This is her. How can I help you?"
"I'm Van Clinton, Kaline's talent manager."
My eyes widened. I haven't talked to Kaline's manager before. I didn't even know that she has her own manager. "Oh, Mr. Clinton. Sorry, Kaline haven't told me that she has a talent manager so I really have no idea of who you were." I mumbled sheepishly
"Please, call me Van. Enough with the formalities, I sound like an old man." He laughed heartily and I just waited for him to continue. "Anyways, back to business. Is Kaline there with you?"
My eyebrows scrunched up in confusion. Didn't he know that she's in Japan?
"No, she's not with me. The last time I've talked to her, she said that she's going to Japan to visit our grandparents. I would've gone there with her but I'm too busy with work, you see." I said, gesturing to my surroundings even though he can't see me.
"Where exactly in Japan? Tokyo?"
"Nope." Popping the letter p. "Nagasaki."
"Are you sure?"
"Uh, yeah. That's what she told me like, a month ago. I thought she'll be back last week because of the rumored world tour of Silhouette Aces but then you called."
"Well, I already sent few of my men to Nagasaki to find her, but they just arrived a few days ago and told me that she's not there and that she hadn't been to your grandparents or to Nagasaki, at all."
I froze. So if she's not in Nagasaki...
"Then where is she?"
"I don't know. I tried going to her townhouses and her hangout spots and places, but she's not there. I checked the hotels, none either. Even Jio and the others are helping me out already with the search."
Kaline is missing? Why would she be missing?
"Did you already try calling Henley?"
Henley is my stepmom. My biological mom, Alex, died a few days after she gave birth to us. After five years, my dad remarried and Henley came into our life. She's nice and fun to be with, but when my dad died when we were 19, she moved to Denmark and started a new family. She was so devastated and left us in the care of our grandparents. Every now and then, she would visit but she never stayed long because she runs the business of his husband. When we finished our studies, my twin and I decided to move out and live independently, until we auditioned and she got in. When they made their first appearance on TV, she gave her talent fee to our grandparents and told them to migrate to Japan.
"We already did. She was worried that maybe Kaline is kidnapped or something."
That's Henley, alright. Even if she's our stepmom, she cares and worries for us, too. She's not like the other stepmoms who are gold diggers and bitches.
"Then what are you going to do now?" I said sheepishly because Annie saw me and she just grinned at me. I send her a pleading look and she just nodded and smiled before walking away. That was close.
"Well, we'll continue finding her. But I'm afraid we're gonna need your help."
I raised a brow. "What for?"
"You know her better than us. And maybe if she finds out that you're helping us find her, maybe she'll show herself and feel guilty for bothering you or something."
I bit my lip. Maybe Van's right. Besides, I know Kaline better than the others. We've been together since we're born and we haven't parted from each other until she joined the band, which was like, nine months ago. I sighed and readjusted my glasses. "Okay. Let me just talk to my manager and see what I can do."
"Great!" He chirped. "I'll send you the address. Oh, and save my number. Call me if you're coming so I can get a plane ticket for you."
"Yeah, okay. Thanks, Van."
I hung up and shoved my phone inside my pants' pocket before standing up. I waved my hand up and gestured for Will to come.
"What's up?"
"I need to talk to the Queen Bitch. I'm gonna have to leave work early."
He looked at me worriedly. "Why? Are you feeling okay? Are you sick?" He pressed the back of his hand against my forehead and he sighed in relief when he found out that I don't have a fever.
"My twin's missing, and I gotta help his manager look for him. And I'm fine, I'm not sick." I said as I exited the counter and stood in front of him.
"Your twin?! As in, Kaline Derricks?! The Kaline Derricks of Silhouette Aces?!" Will shrieked loudly and some of the customers from a few tables turned to us with glares. I narrowed my eyes at him and threw a sheepish smile to the customers before turning to him. "Not so loud! It's a secret, right?"
He scratched the back of his head and bit his lip. "Sorry. I got too excited. You know that I'm a very big fan of Silhouette Aces, right? But anyways, she's missing?"
I bit the inside of my cheek. "Yeah. We all thought that she's in Japan, but she never went there. And now I need to help them find her."
"Oh, okay. Are you going to talk to Queen Bitch right now?" I nodded at him.
"Okay then. Go on. Guess I'll be back with all the numbers and equations again."
I smiled at him. "Thanks, Will."
I walked towards the office of our manager, peeking through the little window on the door. Seeing that she's just munching on sliced apples, I knocked on her wood door before opening it a little, peeking my head in. "Hi, Regina. Can I talk to you for a minute?"
She continued chewing her apple and nodded at me, gesturing for me to come in. I straightened up and opened the door and went inside her office before closing the door and sitting on a chair in front of her table. I firmly placed my hands on my lap.
"Chit-chat. Blah-blah. Fire away, Derricks. I don't have all day." She said as she bit on another slice of apple again. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at her and just pushed up my glasses.
"You see, I received a call from my twin's manager. And he told me that she's missing and they need me to come and help them find her. I was wondering if I could file a leave of absence of two days and maybe an early out from work? I really need to find her, Regina." I explained, plastering a frown on my lips and a pleading look.
She just looked at me and then examined her nails and nodded. "Okay. But those two days aren't paid, you got it?"
I nodded happily. "I understand, Regina. Thank you."
I got up from my seat and walked towards the door and opened it. "Karine..."
I turned back to Regina. "Yeah?"
She smiled at me. "I hope you'll find Kaline."
I returned her smile. "I hope so, too."

I stuffed in my blue sweater inside my bag before zipping it close. I placed my bag on my bed before grabbing my gray sweater and putting it over my tank top. Then I pulled my hair up in a messy bun before grabbing my bag from my bed and going out of the room.
I already called Van earlier and he said that my flight will be at 10:45. And since I'm taking a cab there from home, I made sure to get ready before 8. Van will be picking me up there at the airport and unfortunately, I'll have to stay in the house of Silhouette Aces.
After making sure that all appliances are plugged out of the socket and that the water is turned off, I went out of the house and locked it behind me. The cab that I've called came five minutes after and I got in and told the cab driver where I'm headed first, which is to the bank, and we drove off.
When I got to the airport, I made sure to have my eyeglasses on and makeup, because if someone will see me, they might think that I'm Kaline and I would be in big trouble. It happened before and I don't want a repeat of it again. It was when I was in a gas station and was filling my tank up and a teenager saw me and started yelling, "It's Kaline Derricks!" And so I had to get away and I ended up stranded in the middle of nowhere because I ran out of gas. Good thing it happened in the morning and it was easy to call up a towing truck. From then on, I always make sure to have my eyeglasses on and to wear makeup, especially eyeliner and eyeshadow.
After checking in, I already got in the plane and took my seat in the business class. I told Van to just get me a ticket to the economic class but he wouldn't listen and told me that if Kaline was here, she wouldn't let me ride with all the other people there in the economic and that she would do the same and get me a flight in the business.
As I sunk on my seat, I let my hands run over the seat, feeling it's softness under my palms.
Might as well enjoy it now. Because when I arrive in Hollywood, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be able to enjoy much and sleep.
