Chapter 32
Valeriu Point of View
"I've fixed everything you've asked for, boss."
"Hmm."
I got the notification mail I've asked Dan for and studied it keenly. Once I digested the information myself, I send it to Christopher Fuller from my anonymous mail ID.
At this nick of the moment, I can't take a careless step of doing anything that might cause me to get suspected.
I've worked too hard to get to this point and I'm not getting myself or my efforts into disadvantage.
I checked the packages Dan has sent on my orders and saw they were sent right. Collecting them, I walked into a temporary laboratory that was set for me specially to resume my work on the drug that Elias asked for.
A drug to control human mind!
At first, I wondered why needs a drug to control humans rather than controlling werewolves. After all werewolves are much stronger than humans and are easy to dominate.
But then I understood that proportion of both the communities differ by a large percentage. No matter how powerful werewolves are, they are still in smaller number.
Considering the strength of Veira, one werewolf, in his good form, can take at least forty well trained warriors but according the proportion between humans and werewolves, one werewolf is against nearly nine thousand humans.
Not to forget the weaponry and technology that we have.
But then again, Veira's skills or strength is quite rare and special even in werewolf world. In my knowledge of spending months, even years of study on them, even a well built fully fledged pack warrior can only be able to handle minimum of tens warriors of same stature as him.
Veira, being a nomad right from her birth, she was lucky enough to meet a wandering Buddhist priest who excels in mixed martial arts skills and she was two years old then.
At first I don't know what her younger self life was. There were many things that I only learned when we stayed together. I was surprised how such a young girl grew up alone wandering, feeding and sheltering herself and educating all by herself.
It was when I got my hands on the full record of Veira's life in Elias's study that I learned that her master took her in and taught her higher level martial arts for several years. She wandered to several places with her master and learnt many life lessons as she fell down several times.
Later on, her master relieved her from his shade when he was confident enough she can handle herself pretty well. Veira was thirteen years old kid at that time and she not only excelled in fighting, she fell to rock bottom several times that she learnt many life lessons.
I couldn't believe that her master was the only good person she met in her whole twenty plus life; except Dea. I can totally understand her trust issues because her childhood innocence was trampled by fake sentiments of people over and over that she made a wall made of iron around her heart that even hottest fire cannot melt.
At thirteen, she got the maturity of life that she shouldn't have to.
Mentally, she grew up too soon.
Emotionally, she learnt too much.
That explains why Dea is childish and Veira is more serious and confident. Dea is the childhood that Veira couldn't have.
Life has been hard on her; harder when she has a secret to conceal from the world to live; hardest when she is stamped an evil rogue by a hypocritical werewolf society.
She had no choice except for opting to live among humans and spend her life swindling the rich and arrogant.
The more I read the records of her life, the more I admired her strength and pitied her at the same time. She never lived a life of a child and that made me feel worse for what I'm gambling at.
"So, the drug, how far did it come along?" I heard the voice that I both expected and did not expect equally.
Veira Dea Lupus.
She danced inside like she owns the place as she studied the small lab inch by inch.
"How did you come inside?" I asked as I checked my computer to see if all the security channels are intact.
And they are!
"By the door." How funny!
"Which is locked and secured by passcode and biometrics." I raised my brow as she streamed the chemicals with interest.
"We have been living under the same roof from handful of months. If I cannot even crack the passcode to this room, then what did I learn?" She touched the test tubes and shook them lightly. She did not look at me to answer.
"Even the Majesty cannot enter the lab without my permission."
"Hmm, I gathered that. But I'm not your Majesty, I don't take permissions seriously when I am the one to seek them." She shrugged so nonchalantly that she is not the one who is being kept her against her will.
She looks too cool and composed for a person in her position.
"I warned you, knowing too much might hurt you." I said gravely.
"Yes you did, but I did not take it. I'm not wearing a damsel gown in a distress town. Now tell me, how far did you get through?"
"I'm only answerable to Majesty Elias." I remarked back curtly.
"And I am given to him to be his queen. You gave me to him yourself, remember? I'm Lady Lupus; I have every right to know." I breathed heavily in an attempt to control the overflow of my emotions.
"Why are you here, Veira?"
"How dare you?" She sang mockingly, "It's Lady Lupus to you."
Goodness! What am I to do with her!
"Of course. I'm sorry." She considered me intensely for a minute before the look in her eyes softened.
"You know, you took a huge risk." Her whisper was full of emotions that range from worry to defeat.
At the outburst of sudden sentiments, I can hear Dea wanting to breaking out from the cage in Veira's mind.
"Excuse me?"
"I said, you took a huge risk by doing this."
'I'm stumped by your sympathy towards that pest of the mate. Are you so drowned by him and his love?'
Dea cannot sound anymore angrier than she is now. She is literally tearing down the constrains by the hardness in her tone.
'He is our mate after all.'
'He can mate the cavity of our teeth after they fall off in the toilet.'
"Whatever do you mean, Lady Lupus? You seem have misunderstood me somehow."
"Did I now? I didn't know you took for a fool the whole time. Honestly speaking, I still have many things I couldn't quite understand but I'm not a fool to not know who is an ally and who the enemy is." She spoke stiffening me with her words.
There was a kind of confidence in her voice that relieved me which shouldn't have in the first place. At this moment, I need her less confident.
"So? So you think the man who sold you over to another man and lured you into a lion's den is your partner? How innocent can you be, little girl?" Ridiculing her with a snicker, I turned to operate the sound notification to notify me if someone were to enter the lab.
'I think you lost that mind of yours you are so proud of. How can you put your hope on that pimple?'
My God, Dea is getting good at insulting.
"Precisely. Have you heard of a proverb, 'The most dangerous place is the safest'? Last night I couldn't sleep at all so I did a little thinking and made a few conclusions."
"One, you knew about the existence of the werewolves before I came into your life. Two, you knew me even before our first meeting. Three, you knew I was a werewolf all along. Four, you knew I'm your mate all along and this one; I have no idea how because if the previous information was given by Elias, then there is no chance he would know you are my mate." She said as she leaned against the table in front of me and there is this mocking yet a soft smile playing on her lips.
"Five, your one plus years of friendship with Elias is a well decorated stage made by you. Six, Elias's attempt of taking over the world and rule everyone under his slippers has been going on from a very long time. Seven, Elias is a nutcase with high level psychopathic tendencies but his obsession for me is what makes me safe here. Eight, the werewolves, may it be packs or rogues, are divided into King's and against army and a war is going to storm in soon. If I'm not wrong, I will be in trouble if the army against Elias gets to know about his weakness, which is me unfortunately. My life will be in prejudice in the hands of all those self claimed righteous wolves even though I did not do any wrong and have been supporting them all along. So basically the enemy's den is the safest for me until everything is fixed."
She looked up giving me one of those famous blank stare indicating me to dare tell otherwise and see what she will do.
"Now I wonder how you got yourself in this pickle in the first place and what exactly you are planning with Christopher Fuller. He is your confidant if I'm not wrong."
I took a few steps towards her and leaned close to her ear. She did not shrink back, did not cower or stop me. She just let me come to her.
"Careful sweetheart, even walls have ears here. Shh!"
