Chapter 27
Valeriu Point of View
Silence.
Absolute and bamboozled silence reigned. Everyone went stiff as if they were frozen. Not even a hair on their head was moving; all that was seen was complete shock and incomprehension clouded in every inch of them.
But the shock and silence did not just made a guest appearance on the others but to the lady in question as well.
Veira!
On contrary, Dea has been running wild in Veira's mind with no amount of confusion as to why I had made such a claim.
That animal sure is simple minded!
"I'm sorry?" Fragrance was the first one to get out of her trance. If everyone was baffled by my sudden confession, Fragrance, on the other hand, is simply burning without unseen fire.
There is no doubt an ocean of puzzlement in her facial features but that didn't stop the waves of complete absurdity and envy hitting the shore.
"You heard it right." I shrugged, saying it casually.
"Err..." The man who confessed his feelings for Veira started unable to comprehend what to speak. That was followed by a series of coughs and throat clearing.
"Dr. Cazacu, you – umm –" He started again but couldn't speak out.
Beside me, Veira is still rigid and quite. She has her mouth agape with her eyes casted everywhere but on me.
Was my confession so sudden?
Everyone is stunned, understandable but she shouldn't have to. Wasn't she expecting something similar to this anytime soon?
"She is not my niece. There is no blood or a non-blood relation that makes the bond between us paternal." I was firm in my words so everyone, including Veira, gets the hint.
Holding the hand that was assaulting her dress in a tight tensed grip, I raised it to my lips and gave it a small peck.
"She is as much a woman to me as Fragrance Miller or any other women are, if not more." I studied their faces lazily and found them expressing their astonishment in unison.
Fragrance included.
Ah, she also has the burn from before visible only to destined and intended people like me and Veira.
Oh, Dea too! Because Dea has been making such hilarious comments on honorable Stench's current appearance that it started to waver my resolution on being serious and relaxed.
Her comments went something like –
'You hear that foul smelling rotten egg in human skin! I'm his.'
'I suddenly realized that even a century of bathing in hot springs with aromatic herbs; she will not justify her name.'
'I take my precious comment back; she needs not the hot springs but the ice of Arctic for her burn.'
'Even the blasted balls-less king of werewolves with his blind mind can see envy and spite in Stench's eyes.'
"I have feelings; romantic feelings; for this woman and it has been that way from a very long time. I'm an optimistic person as you all know but my optimism doesn't pertain when there is desire in another man's eyes for my woman." I reminded them kindly with a smile.
Oh, I will not loose my cool. There is no need to. The girl beside is mine by mind, heart, soul and every other element otherwise mentioned.
I had always occupied her mind and I know it by record!
I started to occupy her heart slowly which I'm proud of.
I'm the quintessence of the other half of her soul.
"What – are you talking, Valeriu?" While others are still swallowing my confession to Veira, Fragrance seems to have gotten the hang on the situation.
"The truth, of course."
"You... you love her?" I noticed the very silent Veira raised her eyes and looked at me for a second and turned away and when looked at me, I saw anticipation with regards to the question Fragrance asked.
"I do." Well, I was planning to give Veira a rather good confession but since the situation is making her an object of other's fascination, then to hell with it.
I want her claimed once and for all.
'Our mate, as calm and composed he is, is extremely jealous type.'
I am not jealous!
I'm just making sure men with their hearts set on her don't get disappointed in future. It is purely a normal relationship activity that assures the personal space of your spouse.
I'm thriving to assure her comfort space.
"Woah! So, you both have been in a relationship all this while?" Spoken like a Miller. I can hear her uncle's discerning arrogance in her tone clearly.
As a friend, she was alright but this girl is really clingy and wrongly imaginative.
"I'm still pursuing her, actively."
'Veira, oh Veira, we got ourselves a shady mate. Even as a wolf with animalistic sentiments, I can't be this jealous as he is not. Listen to me Veira, the face we and everyone see every day is just a fruity night facemask.'
'What the hell is he doing? He is confessing nonsense before everyone, Dea.'
'Whatever did you find nonsense about? Don't you think he loves us, loves you?'
'I assume, he does. I can feel it. Goddess knows I can feel his feelings for us but –'
'You wonder when and how did this start?'
'He has always been kinder and affectionate than any other in our whole life. I – like him albeit love him as well but Dea, can we handle it? Do you think we can handle a family that comes with him after being alone for all our lives?'
Believe me when I say I'm hard to get hurt. I'm a kind of person who doesn't care about what others say as long as I know what and who I am.
But her doubts, hesitation about me did pierce my heart. Not because she is not trusting me completely but because of the circumstances that made her this way.
'Expectations are the real cause of misery. We were just day's old baby lying alone just at the board of pack territory grounds. The pack did not even care to take us in and include us in the pack just because the infant is a rogue. When we cannot expect something from our own kind then what makes you think a mate, no matter how much he claims to love us, will be any different. Did you forget how we grew up?'
Dea has no comeback for that. She has no words to assure Veira which is comprehensible.
Only now did I know that being a girl, a lonesome girl, she must have been disappointed with the world all her life.
"She is a cautious girl, a person who deserves much more than what I or any other man for that matter can possibly offer her. So, I'm taking my time in understanding her. I don't to give her everything I can, I want to know her and give her just what she needs. I want to make a difference." For the very first time, I saw something I never expected.
A tear. A tear in her eyes.
She managed to clean it before anyone could detect it but I know the tear is a result of heartfelt words I said.
She does love me. Love me as a woman should a man but she also has her doubts on it.
"Why? Why her?" Fragrance's question silenced anymore whispering going around.
For a fourth person, the drama must be pretty interesting to miss even a second of it.
"No reason." I replied back nonchalantly. I noticed movement from Veira and she was attempting to stand up and walk away.
Just as she was half way through getting up from her sitting position, I held her hand, this time tighter than before, and pushing her down close to me.
My arm wrapped around her slim waist and held her down securely in my arms. "Before you go, I want you know more of my feelings for you." I whispered softly, going back to give my attention to Fragrance that has been questioning me like an advocate.
"There should be. How can you love her without a reason?" Why is love without a reason so ridiculous?
"How can I not? She is not a specimen on my table that I need a reason to experiment on. I'm in love with her, so very deeply, and that needs no reason. It just – feels right."
This answer wasn't for Fragrance alone. This is also a small attempt to assure at least a little of Veira's doubts.
I'm not an unreasonable person. I know the limits of trials and prospect.
"But she is much younger to you. Nearly eleven years younger. She – she is not right for you. She can be childish or maybe she cannot be as perceptive as you are. Even your train of thoughts may not match. You need someone who knows you well and can complete you."
Fragrance is starting to get annoying. Can't she read the room?
I stood up along with Veira by holding her hand in mine tightly. We have a lot to talk and I don't want her running off to avoid me.
High time we set a few things straight before I work on her insecurities.
Annoyed, I opened my mouth to give her a suitable answer when Veira beat me off by speaking for the first time on the issue.
"I fail to understand how it is any of your business, Miss Miller. I can be a fossil unearthed after thousand years and it still doesn't concern you if Dr Cazacu love or hate me. I appreciate your enthusiasm in strong public relations for VIBE than making yourself seem high and mighty than others. You seem to think Dr. Cazacu as an unreachable God who is made of stars and loans light to the sun but –" She paused, her lips slowly turning upwards into a sweet saccharine smile.
Boy was it a scary smile!
"He is not that great to me." Ouch!
"Then you –" Fragrance started only to be cut off by my dear girl again with a strong slap of words.
"Yet, this not-so-great, simple doctor is destined to be mine. Fortunately for him."
With that, she pulled me away along with her.
Well, that was hot!
