Chapter 18
Veira Point of View
I'm used to it now!
I'm used to how things suddenly take a different turn and make it hard for me.
I was planning to go by Dea's wish and our luck with our human mate but seems like we should put the plan off the charts for a while until another eclipse on my like wears off.
I knew it would happen one day or the other but never knew it would so early. I've been followed and watched from a few days and by the smell of it I know they are werewolves from packs.
What's more surprising was they smell of different packs along with the murderous musk coming out of them.
They are here with the intention of a brutal kill!
From office to home, I've been under strict surveillance. They think I don't know about their stalking but playing innocent is one of my greatest weapons.
'What did wolfbook say again?' Dea asked with no anxiety at all. I know we can handle few warrior werewolves singlehandedly pretty easily but that comes with a bigger consequence.
'There was a discussion about rogue attacks on northern plains leaving severe casualties behind.' Wolfbook is like a facebook for werewolves only.
I created it a few years ago along with few more web applications and websites available only for werewolves under a pseudonym so the creator cannot be tracked down.
Perks of being a computer genius!
Luckily, they were a huge hit and was used by almost every living werewolf on the planet.
'Rogue attack on packs of northern plains is like asking for a death wish. Which group of fool rogues would go and open their butts to them?' Now that's the real question.
Union of Northern plain packs are considered stronger and mightier than the royal pack. Why would someone have pickle with them?
But the result of their careless actions is what caused me the trouble. According to the discussion and the notifications posted on the websites, the union has decided to eliminate every living rogue on the planet as a tribute to their deceased pack members.
'While I admire their loyalty towards their people, they are taking the whole issue to a fake skin solution level by not investigating it properly before taking action.'
'I don't think this is as simple as it looks. No matter how strong or strategic the group of rogues is, attacking northern plains is still a foolish move. See where it got us now. We are innocent and had nothing to do with but all thanks to them we are suspended to be a victim in an assassination mission.'
We just met our mate recently; I'm hesitant to trust him with my future but he is still our mate who is made especially for us. I didn't even start to form a real bond with him or start to have a tacit understanding between us and I'm already on the verge of loosing my life.
I may be a cunning wolf with mouth full of lies and cells made up of tricks but I'm still a rogue werewolf who is alone. Reason is something that wolves forewent, depending overly on their physical strength.
"MISS LUPUS!" My ears almost got their dream funeral by the way Dan screamed my name.
When did he come?
Was I too immersed in my own thoughts that I didn't even hear or feel him coming?
Dan was standing on the other side of the table with a huge pile of documents and files that needs my immediate attention.
My mouth bent up into a smile when I saw how he is struggling not to show his concern over me. That frown of struggle is a keeper.
It was adorable.
"Sorry, I was – occupied. Yes, what is the matter?" I took the documents and started going through them.
They are mostly about inventory and other valuable resources that they need for further research. The others are proposals to be dealt with by VIBE Constructions.
"Are you alright, Miss Lupus?" I gave him a small nod as I continued to spare my focus on the job in hand.
"I –" He cleared his throat proudly as if he is putting himself on a sacrificial furnace for the welfare of others, "You are my boss's confidant. You are an important person for VIBE as boss entrusted you with the responsibility and I don't like if you keep getting distracted from business. If there is something that – well, needs my help then let me know."
Well, well, well, look who went from being a coconut to tomato!
I only opened my mouth to tell him it's okay but he beat me off before I could even produce any sound. "Don't cultivate the notion that I'm being friendly with you. I'm only doing this for boss and VIBE."
"Right! For your boss and VIBE. I understand thanks for the heads-up." I chuckled lightly after being tensed from few days.
"By the way, I wanted to ask you something from a long time." Dan immediately nodded his head encouraging me to ask away.
"I saw everyone in the office keeping their distance from me. Worse, I didn't see any of the managers or the directors speaking a word against my ideas in the meetings. What happened?"
"You happened." Dan smirked which got me to narrow my eyes at him.
I?
What did I do?
"I'm sorry? What have I done to them?"
"After that heroic fight days ago, every employee and official of higher rank learnt not to mess with you. Some respects you while some are scared of you. On the whole, everyone now understands that you are not exactly what you show them and that taught them not to mess with you."
Really now?
"That was days ago and it was just a small fight. That scared them off?" I thought people in VIBE are cruel and problematic. How come a simple fight frightened them?
I raised myself between humans as one of them and understand their nature pretty well. However, I did not see them scared of me like this before and when I say I fought ruthlessly before in several situations before humans, I wasn't simply joking at all.
"Oh only a few are scared of you but most of them think you are powerful and respects you for whatever you did that day. Mr. Miller, though, is keeping a low profile and acting by your wishes quietly."
"Alright. I'll go through them and sign the necessary ones." Dan left my office and I was back to thinking about the werewolf problem in hand.
Walking to the huge glass wall that oversees the whole city, I glanced at livelihood of the humans that still have a little of brains and reasons still alive inside them.
They look happy! At least there's no rank or caste difference to outcast them.
My eyes wandered on the buzzing streets and the roads filled with the passing people and small shops. It was by one of café's name pole that I saw a familiar face keeping an eye on VIBE.
He was one of the wolves watching me!
The long discussion on the wolfbook between packs and innocent rogues' clearly showed how determined the northern plains are in eliminating every single rogue on the face of earth.
Few rogues did plead them to leave out those innocent ones but they fell of deaf hypocritical ears. If I wasn't a popular figure in the society, Elder Cazacu would be attending my funeral by now.
'I'm nearly sure that the rotting pack who was after us gave information on me to the authorities.'
'What do you have in mind, Veira?'
'Writing a draft on the situation to the King will make no difference. After all he is as hypocritical as others. Our best bet is to use our public imagine to buy a little more time to come up with a better plan.'
With a formality knock on the door, came in Elder Cazacu with his usual smile. "Hey"
"Hey?" It came out more like a question from me.
"Dan said you could use a friend." Ah, Dan, the ever loyal subject to his boss.
"A friend? When did we become friends, Dr. Cazacu?"
"Aren't we?"
"Oh, my paycheck doesn't include any such thing."
"Fair enough. We can have a lengthy discussion on your paycheck now but Dan said there's someone here for you." Elder Cazacu, unlike Dan, is open about his worry for me.
It's first time for someone other than Dea who got worried for me. It felt good but awkward at the same time.
"For me?"
"Yeah, he said someone by the name Christopher Fuller is here to meet you. We will talk about your paycheck at our home. I'll ask Dan to send your guest and relax, I can see something is bothering you." I was stunned by the name of the person who came to meet me.
But I was more stunned when Elder Cazacu pulled me into a comforting hug and a peck on my head. Heck, even Dea went speechless!
No, let's deal with the hug later, Christopher is more important now.
'Hey, Isn't Christopher Fuller one of the seniors from union of northern plains? A hard headed and blind slaughterer of rogues.'
Cazacu's hands tightened around me as the hug got to next level of intimacy.
What got into him suddenly?
First, how to deal with Christopher Fuller?
