The cafe buzzed with energy
as people herded into the shop
in an attempt to hide
from the numbing wind.
Most left spilled coffee
and muffin crumbs in their wake
as they hurried out of the store
to avoid the treacherous
gusts of wind.
I was wiping down a table
with a slightly stained and damp rag
when you walked in.
Measly fabric hung off your body
and dark bags painted your eyes.
I assumed you were going to buy something hot to drink,
to warm your insides,
maybe heat up your hands,
but I was a bit surprised
when you sat down
at a booth
on the opposite end of the cafe,
and simply gazed
into the world outside.
A strong feeling overcame me,
urged me
to walk up to you
and ask if you wanted something.
But I stopped
once I saw that look on your face.
One that illustrated
pure exhaustion
from the dreariness
of life.
It was a look I knew
all too well.
It was best
if I just left you alone
and allowed you
to drift off
into sweet reverie.
