CH11.2: A game of cat and Mice (pt.2)
Sylvia's POV:
As soon as I heard the shrills of Sheena and Chantelle from the 4th floor, I didn't hesitate to start running for the stairs.
My heart beats fast from every step that I make while ascending the stairs. I can feel the adrenaline rushing over me. It's no wonder why I am desperate to save my friends.
I'm already at the 3rd floor, and I could hear loud thuds from just above me.
As I make my first step for the stairs again, I bumped into Sheena. She was running down the stairs in a hurry. She and the rest were breathing heavily, a fearful expression plastered onto their faces. It's obviously written all over them: They are in a long haul.
"Thank god you guys are alright!" I exclaimed while rubbing my chest to ease my panic.
"Yeah. We have to get out of here. There's a crazy psycho running around here. We're going to escape from the back gate. Come on let's go!" Sheena explained while gripping my hand as we went down the stairs.
I took an abrupt halt, sensing something incomplete.
"Wh-Where's Candace and Carter?"
All of them looked at me with apologetic expressions. Within their gazes, I knew what they're trying to get at. I'm so disappointed to myself. I was too late.
"S-Sylvia!" I heard someone yelled my name from the 4th floor.
I knew it was one of the twins who are calling me. My mind is focused on going after them. I can't just leave them behind.
"No! Stay away from me!" I heard another familiar voice yelled.
I don't know which one of them is crying for help, since they have similar voices. I attempted going for the stairs, but Sheena and Chantelle held me back.
"No! Let me go! I need to save them!" I shrieked, exerting my effort to get out of their grasp.
"Please Sylvia! Just don't go there!" Chantelle hollered as she continues to maintain her grip on my arm.
"You're gonna get yourself killed. I can't let that happen!" Sheena chimed in as she maintains her steel-like grasp on my other arm.
I didn't listen to their pleas. The twins are family to me. I just can't let them die in this school. I rather get myself killed than leaving them behind selfishly.
After much force, I have finally freed myself from their grip and sprinted for the stairs without second thoughts.
"SYLVIA! NO!" I heard my brother's fearful shriek from behind me.
"JUST GET OUT OF HERE!!" I yelled back at them, not even bothering myself to take a glance from behind.
I know this is risky, but I'd do anything for the safety of my siblings.
"Help me!" I heard one of the twins shrieked. I kept ascending the stairs with adrenaline rushing inside my veins.
I have reached the 4th floor, and the first thing I saw is a glimpse of one of the twins turning to the left.
"Molly?! Is that you?!" I called out loud while following the figure. "Holly?! Answer up!" I hollered again, but no answer at all.
I swerved to the right. There's another set of stairs, and to my dismay, there was no sign of the twins. The only thing I found is Molly's favorite white teddy bear, stained in crimson blood.
I knelt down in distraught. What happened to them? Did the killer caught them? Are they already dead? So many questions flooded my mind, but none of them were given a clear answer. I do not know how long I was paralyzed to my position, but I knew it was quite a while. I felt my feet carrying me towards the stairs automatically. I was left in a daze, mixed emotions such as sadness, anger and bafflement has flooded my mind like a raging tide.
Did I failed once again?
Realization hits me as I noticed myself in the main lobby once again. With my eyes automatically scanning my surroundings, I found something that made my heart skip a beat.
On the floor lies an unconscious Holly and Molly. They look horrible in their state. Both of them had large stains of blood on their white skirts and white t-shirts. Molly had a few bruises on her arms and legs, the same thing goes to Holly.
I ran to their aid and knelt down beside them. I placed my index finger on their wrist, receiving a pulse from both of them, which made me felt a wave of relief wrapping itself around me. I started shaking them, tears threatening to fall out of my aqua blue eyes.
"Wake up!"
Not long after, both of them fluttered their eyes open. A sense of joy lightens up within me. How I'm thankful they're ok.
"S-Sylvia?" Molly muttered, looking around her surroundings in a daze.
I let out a relieved smile and hugged the twins so tight like their is no tomorrow. At the moment, I'm filled with nothing else except for gratitude. I'm thankful they're ok.
"Wh-what happened? Is the bad girl still here?" Holly asked in a worried tone as she frantically keeps looking around her surroundings. I couldn't blame her reaction. Paranoia is clearly written all over her, which is actually not good.
"Sylvy, I'm scared." Molly chimed fearfully as she shook my arm lightly. She, like her twin sister, also scanned her surroundings wildly.
I knelt down right in front of them just enough to reach their level. I rubbed both of their shoulders before proceeding to caress their soft cheeks in order to give them a sense of courage and calmness. "It's ok. We're gonna get out of here." I assured the two.
I help them stand up to their feet. We both exited the high school building. We silently walk around the wide school grounds. A presence of a cold breeze soon appeared around us. Nothing but silence around us, except for the chilling howl of the wind. Our only soruce of light is the faint moonlight. Surely it is still dark, but we can still make out our way around. The others; specifically Sheena, told me a while ago that they'll go and run for the back gate as their only means of escape. I and the twins might as well catch up with them.
We arrived in an open field parking lot. The three of us need to pass this lot first before reaching the back gate itself. We were walking silently until we heard a rustling sound not too far from us. I abruptly stopped in my tracks, and so does the twins. I turned my gaze to the twins. Their faces are painted with dread. The rustling sound came on again, making my heart skip a beat.
I turned my attention to my siblings again, a serious look plastered onto my face. "You two hide. Don't go out of your hiding place unless I say so." I instructed them.
I ushered the twins to hide from one of the vehicles that were parked around here. They followed my order and went to the back of a maroon van. I grabbed a long piece of wood that was lying in the middle of the pebbled ground. I slowly crept towards a nearby tree that's covered in bushes, where the rustling noises can be heard. One step. Two step. Every movement I make is equivalent to my heart beating louder and louder, like a monk hitting a large gong repeatedly. I can feel goosebumps on me, and my hands keeps shaking due to my nervousness. All of this terrible things I felt combined with the current situation reminds me back from the incident in the Winston's Mansion. I mustered all of my courage up. I pounced behind the bushes, tightening my grip on the piece of wood that is ready to smack whatever or whoever is behind the minty pile of grass.
As I got behind the bushes, I found nothing. A sigh escaped out of my mouth as I lowered my weapon down.
"You're doing a good job scaring yourself. A f*cking great job it is, Sylvia." I scolded myself mentally, rubbing the bridge of my nose in dissapointment.
I heard the rustling noise again, and it was coming from the tree above me. I raise my head up and noticed that the rustling noises were caused by the swaying of the minty green leaves from the cold breeze.
I sighed and went back to the car where Holly and Molly are hiding.
"Molly?! Holly?!"
There was no sign of Molly and Holly. My sense of calmness turns into panic in a switch. I looked all around the parking lot, but not a single soul was found.
Where did they go?

Chase's POV:
We had been running for 15 minutes like we're some pack of wolves going on a hunt for food. We decided to hide inside a large building, which turns out to be an old dark library that was located at the back of the high school building. The place is already abandoned for a decade, inside and out. Nothing but dusts and spider webs around the interior, along with forgotten books that are oddly still arranged well among the book shelves. The walls and tiled floors has a vintage vibe within it, complimenting the library's abandonment. For a library, this one is really huge. It's a wide library to be exact, and from the looks of it; you can get lost around here due to the long rows of book shelves aligned perfectly in position. I felt that this place is like a freakin' maze! It's huge!
"I hope Sheena and Tyler are ok." I heard Chantelle said out of thin air as she and the others are taking a rest after the long pursuit. We've lost track of Sheena and Tyler while we were running from the culprit. Hopefully, they would be alright.
"What will we do of they won't ever make it to the back gate? Add to the fact that Sheena has the keys with her." Timothy pondered.
"It's either we will run for the main gate, or help ourselves climb over the brick wall of the back gate." I simply replied while staring at nothing. To be honest, his question is a tough thing to answer. We came all this way, we just can't go back to where we came from. It'll take another pack of minutes for us to reach the front gate if we do so. But if we proceed to go for the back gate and try to climb over the tall brick wall, it'll take us for a while; almost rendered useless at all.
"Why does this even have to happen? It's so messed up." Timothy blurted out. I couldn't blame him. Even I myself pondered to that question. What did we ever do to deserve this kind of hell?
Chantelle had already called the police, and they say that they will be here in 30 minutes. At least somehow, help is on the way. But for me, I think this is gonna be my worst 30 minutes. Now we're gonna take the "don't die and survive" trope, which I am not happy about.
"What was that?!"
We all stood up to our feet in unison to the sound of the front door banging. The banging noise sent shivers down my spine. Is she here?
I turn my gaze to my friends, and I noticed them looking at me with an unnerved expression. I know they want me to open the door. I do have the courage to open it but... at what cost?
Just thinking about that thought made my body stiff. I tried looking for anything that can be used as a weapon, but none. I guess I don't have a choice but to open the door without holding anything for self-defense.
I slowly went to the door. I never knew at first that my heart started to pound loudly. I can feel the numbness from my feet every time I get closer to the door. My mind keeps screaming for me not to open it, but my body says otherwise. I am a mere inch from the wooden door, and I can hear the terrifying rhythm of the banging noises fully. I gathered all of my courage and flew the door open.
My eyes went wide, perfectly circular as the shape of the full moon to see the sight of Sylvia alive and well. I did not hesitate to yank her by the arm as I dragged her inside. After pulling her in, I shut the door instantly. I crouched down to my knees as I catch my breath. For a second, I thought death is the one knocking by the door.
"Jesus you're ok!" Sheena exclaimed, not able to prevent herself from tackling Sylvia with a hug.
"I-I'm fine." She replied with a stutter as she scanned her eyes around us. "Wh-where's Tyler and Sheena?" Sylvia worriedly asked once she found out that the two are absent.
I was about to open my mouth to answer, but a husky voice has beat me first to it. "We don't know, kid. We'd lost track of them." Jack answered.
I noticed the downing look Sylvia has across her face. As for me, I felt guilty for not abling to maintain the group together. Sylvia cared those two deeply. Especially Tyler, she would do anything just to keep her brother safe. But now, it seems like she won't be able to fulfill that duty, and I blame myself for it.
"Stop with that look. You ain't a cry baby." Jack uttered, rather coldly.
I glanced at him and shot back a glare. I turned my attention back to Sylvia and pat her on the shoulder. "Don't listen to him." I told her with a smile. "Trust me, you're a strong girl."
I went towards a chair and sat back. This night is tiresome if you're gonna ask me. At least I need to refresh my system from all that running I made. I silently sat on a chair as I watch Chantelle and Sylvia having a short talk.
Chantelle: I'm sorry if we'd lost track of your brother and Sheena. Even I myself must admit that I'm scared and worried just as you are.
Sylvia: It's alright. Let's just hope for their safety.
Chantelle: The twins— Holly and Molly. Where are they? Why are they not with you?
Sylviw: I found them at first, but I lost them... Again.
Chantelle: I'm sorry to hear that. I hope they're alright.
Sylvia: Same thoughts.
My guilt was doubled. Just hearing out Sylvia's words has made me guilty. I don't have an inch of idea of what's going on in this girl's head, but one thing I'm sure about is that she's not having the peace of mind that she's willing to have. Just thinking about the fact that Sylvia is separated from her siblings with zero idea about their whereabouts is nerve-wrecking if I were in her position. I felt guilty because I felt like I just doubled the complications within her mind when in fact; I didn't even done it at all. I failed maintaining the group to stay together.
With a sigh, I laid back down to the chair I'm sitting on.
They'll be alright... I hope.

3rd Person's POV:
Lost and confused; Sheena and Tyler has been running around the university for almost half an hour, trying to find the back gate. It is rather an unfortunate turn for them to be separated from the others.
"Wait up Sheena!" Tyler exclaimed as he took an abrupt halt. Sweats were dripping down from his temples as he catches his breath from that god awful sprinting they've been doing for almost half an hour.
"What?" Sheena asked as she scans her surroundings in order to make sure that the killer isn't following them.
"I need to call Sylvia." Tyler said, almost in urgency.
"Are you sure?" Sheena doubt. "It's dangerous to make a call in an open area, especially if we are in some risky situation." the girl stated, paranoia is clearly painted onto her face.
"Yes." Tyler replied. "I have to make sure she and the twins are ok!"
It's no wonder for Sheena to see this side of Tyler. Tyler greatly cares for his siblings. He truly loves them. Seeing his siblings in danger or hurt could possibly take a huge toll on him. He wouldn't leave them behind. They are his family. They are the most important puzzle pieces in his life.
Tyler soon dialled Sylvia's number, oblivious to the upcoming danger that he'll unintentionally cause for his dearest sister.
——————————————————
Sylvia's POV:
15 minutes had passed by already, and there is still no sign of the killer, which I am thankful about. I sat beside a window that's covered in scarlet red curtains. I still can't get over with Tyler and the twins. First, I found the twins, but then I lost them once again. And second, I learned from the others that Tyler is missing along with Sheena. I don't even know where the two went. I don't even have a single clue of their whereabouts. My mind is already flooded nothing but worriment. My soul is in disharmony by the repetitive thought about my siblings and best friend possibly falling as a victim in that mysterious killer's palms.
I was in the muddle of processing my thoughts when my peripheral vision caught sight of someone by the window beside me. I could make out a shape of a girl. Did she saw me? Clearly, I am uncertain about it.
I think the girl didn't even noticed me at all. I am sure about it because she is tilting her head side by side as if she's trying to make out what is inside the library. My whole body froze. My breath stiffened as I stood in my position, not daring to move an inch of muscle. My heart keeps pounding inside like continuous high-caliber gun shots. I slowly went to Chase and started waking him.
"Ch-Chase." I whispered in urgency. I looked back at the window, the girl is still looking around pane by pane.
"What is it Sylvia? I'm trying to sleep." Chase muttered in a sleepy yet, irritated voice.
I leaned beside his ear and whispered. "There's someone watching by the window."
Saying that simple sentence is enough for him to be wide awake. He looked at me with fear in his eyes, he tilted his gaze to the window, then back at me. We made a decision to wake the others, so we started breaking them off of their slumber.
"G-guys?" I whispered as I shook them one by one.
"What is it Sylvia? I'm too sleepy." Timothy groaned.
"Wh-what is it Sylvia?" Chantelle asked while rubbing her eyes.
"Wake up. There's someone watching from the---" Chase didn't even have enough amount of time to finish his sentence when we heard the door being slowly destroyed.
I turn my sight to the door. All colors from my face drained as my eyes caught a glimpse of the girl breaking down the door with her long meat hook. Paralyzed in my position, I tried thinking some back up plans, but I was left with only one: Escape.
I felt a strong hand gripping onto my wrist. Next thing I knew is that, I was being pulled by someone. My eyes caught sight of Vin pulling me. He has brought me to the end of the library. It was only the two of us. Realization hits me soon enough, that we're scattered around this gigantic library.
We hid behind a book shelf. We sat there in silence, readying ourselves at the same time. Anxiety is attacking me on the inside just by hearing those tiny pitter patter of flat shoes striking down the floor echoing around this building. It is no wonder why I am in great fright. Losing one's life is like my deepest fear already. I couldn't imagine more if I was caught in this girl's murderous palms.
"Don't make a f*cking noise." Vin whispered to me with a cuss.
I just simply nod as a form of yes.
"ARGH!"
I heard crashing noises from ahead, along with Chantelle's horrifying scream. My heart skipped a beat to those sounds. I fully covered my mouth with my hands to cover up my scream that is threatening to burst out of my mouth.
"T-TIMOTHY!"
"AAARGH!"
My ears rang from the agonizing shrieks of Timothy, along with flesh being ripped out from a large chunk and into tiny bits and pieces.
I covered my ears, not able to bear the ear-defining sounds of murder.
I can feel Vin's grip on my shoulder tightening as I teared up in sadness and in fear. I didn't bothered wiping off the crystal-clear liquid that is leaking out of my eyes instantly. A realization struck me in my mind: Timothy isn't going to make it.
"NO! TIMOTHY WHERE ARE YOU?!" I heard Chantelle's anguished roar from the distance.
I can hear the quick pitter-patter of tiny footsteps running around the library, followed by absolute silence after that.
"TIMOTHY! ANSWER UP!" Chantelle yelled once again, but she received no reply from the latter.
Chantelle must've not seen Timothy because of the severe darkness the library is enveloped with. Even I myself couldn't see much from the dark. After what felt like eternity, I felt Vin tapping me on the shoulder lightly, making me jump slightly from it.
"Get on your feet. We have to get out of this place." I hear him whisper beside my ear.
I slowly got up to my feet and started following him.
"Just follow me. Don't let go of my hand." he instructed, tightening his grip on my hand.
Somehow, I felt comfortable even just a bit, thanks to Vin's warm hand. His warmth made me feel that I am safe. I don't wanna let go of his hand at this moment. I have no other source of bravery anymore. His warmth is the only thing I got for now.
We walk cautiously, paying attention to our surroundings at the same time. We took a quick halt. Vin faced himself at me. Even with the pitch blackness around us, I can still see his serious face.
"Stay there. I'm going to find the others. If I don't come back in 10 minutes, you know what to do. Don't act stupid, be fast." He told me before running off to who knows where, leaving me all alone.
——————————————————
"Sylvia."
I jolted in surprise from a hand touching my shoulder. Vin had finally returned along with Chantelle. Unfortunately, Chase isn't with them. I pulled out my phone and decided to turn its flashlight on, but Vin prevented me from doing so.
"Not good if we use flashlight. She'll probably locate us more easily if we've done that." he explained it to me. He has a point.
I nodded before leading the way. We silently navigated through the dark, none of us trying to make unnecessary noises.
"Where is Chase?" I solemnly asked. The thought about Chase disappearing all of a sudden is still pondering inside my mind.
"We don't know. We can't find him at all." Chantelle answered with worriment.
I was worried. We were getting fewer in numbers real quick. We walked and walked until I can already see the faint moonlight from ahead. My brief moment of relief was interrupted by my phone ringing loudly.
"Turn it off!"
I fidgeted for my phone inside my pocket. I pulled it out, seeing that Tyler is calling me. A very faint of joy washed over me just by thinking that my brother is ok. But a strong sense of panic thrives within me as I quickly turned the ringtone off. It felt silent again after that, no sounds can be heard. I scolded myself mentally for not putting my phone into silent mode in the first place.
"F*ck me. I'm sorry." I apologized to them in a whisper.
Just then, I heard the screeching sounds of metal dragging against the floor. It is coming from behind us. My sense of dread arose at its peek. I know exactly who that is, so I didn't waste time and started running fast.
"JUST RUN!" Vin yelled as he continues sprinting like a cheetah.
I can hear the little footsteps getting nearer, so I ran faster. I kept on dashing, not even bothering myself to turn around. I'm almost lost in air, and I wanna stop my feet from running, but extreme adrenaline makes me keep on going.
I was the first one to get out of the library, then next was Vin. Chantelle was about to get out when she slipped, causing me to yell out her name in fear.
"CHANTELLE!" I screamed as I spot the killer creeping up from behind the young girl.
The killer was about to swing her hook down to Chantelle, but the unexpected thing happened.
Chase came out of the shadows behind the killer and took Chantelle's place. I see how the hook impaled through Chase's chest deeply, causing me to wince. Chase took a last glance at us. He gave us a weak smile before pushing the girl with his great effort.
I scrambled myself towards Chantelle and yanked her by the arm.We all dashed away from the library.
"I-I can't believe he did that for me." Chantelle muttered with so much shock in her tone.
I felt few tears streaming down from my face. I wiped it off and continued running.
It took almost forever until we had finally reached the back gate, and to my joy, we saw Tyler and Sheena unlocking the gate.
"HURRY UP!" Vin yelled out to them as we ran.
"OPEN THE GATE! OPEN THE FREAKING GATE QUICK!" I yelled too, not able to contain my desperation for escape.
We've finally reached the gate. We are finally getting out of this hell hole.
"Sylvia!" Tyler exclaimed while tackling me with a hug. I can feel comfort within my brother's warm arms. It was quite a while to see Tyler ok and all, but for me, it felt like eternity.
"Where's Timothy? Why is Chase not with you three?!" Sheena asked in distress.
Chantelle just shook her head solemnly, not abling to prevent her tears from falling.
"Sylvia!" I heard two familiar voices from behind.
I turned myself around, relieved to see the twins running towards us safe and sound.
"Molly! Holly!" I exclaimed as I hugged them real tight.
I felt relieved at the moment. I thought they were gonna end up dead.
Our reunion has been shortly interrupted by the sound of police sirens blaring up ahead.
This nightmare is finally over... For now...
