Butterfly (나비)

♡ this is kind of a single father namjoon au! the rest of the boys aren't in it, but this follows the timeline that namjoon adopted nari when they first met ♡

The little girl rocked back and forth on her heels as she stood in front of the big door. She had waited patiently for the numbers on the clock in her room to say 9 with two zeroes, which was when her boy had promised that he'd come and get her, but even after the numbers turned to 9 with a one and a five, he was still nowhere to be seen. After a lot of thinking, the child finally decided that she would go to him instead. He was the first person she wanted to see every morning, as his face was the last that she saw before falling asleep every night.

Small fingers twisted the doorknob and she entered his bedroom. Just as she suspected, her boy was fast asleep in his own bed. His soft snores made her giggle as she tiptoed closer until their faces were level with eachother.

"Joon," She whispered, "Joon, it's nine-one-five."

The boy didn't stir, so the girl spoke a little louder this time, "Nine-one-five. Joon, time for breakfast."

He still remained motionless, so she decided that she had no choice but to try a different method. The child carefully crawled on to his bed and cuddled into his chest. Maybe this would work.

"Hm? Nari?" The boy sleepily mumbled and hugged her closer, "Is that you?"

"It's nine-one-five."

Namjoon opened his eyes for the first time that day and smiled when he saw that his prediction was correct. A little girl lay snuggled in his embrace. Her deep brown eyes met his under a pair of nimble glasses, filling his heart with the kind of unconditional love that could only flow between a father and his daughter.

"Oh, I'm late, aren't I?" He apologized, sincerely, "I'm sorry, darling. I went to bed a little later than what I planned last night."

"Later than Seven-four-five?" She asked in disbelief. The girl didn't know how anyone could stay up past then!

"Much later than seven-four-five," Namjoon laughed, placing a well deserved kiss on her head.

Nari squirmed with a happiness she didn't quite know how to describe and eager to return his love, the girl peppered his face with little kisses. Namjoon allowed it of course. It comforted him to know that she felt safe enough to display affection....that is until he felt something a little sharper graze his cheek.

"Baby, no lovebites, remember?" He reminded her firmly, "Teeth are for eating food, not Joon."

"Awe," Nari pouted and left one last peck before settling back down into his arms, "Not fair."

Namjoon smiled. The truth was that he really didn't mind her lovebites, it's not like they hurt anyway, but he knew that the behavior could become a little problematic as she got older. "You don't want to eat me, darling," He lovingly teased her, "I'm not tasty, I'm just skin and bones." The boy's hand rested on her cheek, "Your ouchies are looking better though. Do they still hurt?"

"Little bit," She replied, referring to the red and purple bruises that covered her body, "No touch."

"That's right, no touch," Namjoon repeated, "I won't touch them if they still hurt. I would never hurt you."

"Never ever?"

"Never ever ever ever ever," He promised solemnly, "You're precious to me. I'd never do anything to cause you pain."

"Even if I was bad?"

Namjoon kissed the side of her head, "You're never bad, my darling. And even if you were, that doesn't mean that you deserve to be hurt."

Nari said nothing and pressed her ear to his broad chest and was comforted to hear his steady heartbeat. The boy gently rubbed her back, careful to avoid the places he knew were tender. You're getting better, I know you are, Namjoon pondered, Two months ago when we first met you were hesitant to even take my hand, but now you're cuddling with me without a second thought. You trust me to keep you safe.

"Joon?" Nari asked softly.

"Yes, baby girl?"

"Can we go to butterfly garden today?"

Namjoon nodded eagerly, "That sounds like a great idea. We'll go after breakfast, okay? I'll bring some coloring pages and snacks too and we can have a little day at the park."

"Yay!" The little girl cheered and shrugged herself out of his embrace, "I want eat now so we can leave."

"Alright, darling," He laughed and stood up as well, "Let's get some food."

The two of them traveled downstairs and into the kitchen. Namjoon flipped on the lights and opened the fridge to see what was available for breakfast. He wasn't much of a cook, but he tried to learn the best he could for his daughter. However, they were in desperate need of a trip to the supermarket, so the options were pretty slim. Rice with leftover peas, soy sauce, and kimchi were to be today's breakfast.

"Joon?"

The boy noticed a small tug on his shirt and he looked down to see Nari at his side, "What can I do for you, my darling?"

"Can I have banana milk?"

"Of course you can," Namjoon swiftly pulled a carton of milk out of the fridge and poured her a cup, "Careful, baby, don't spill."

He smiled as the girl slowly picked up the cup and made her way over to the table without spilling a single drop. As she settled down in her chair, she flashed Namjoon a proud smile.

"Good job!" The boy praised her, making her grin even bigger, "I'll have breakfast ready in just a few minutes, okay?"

Nari nodded and patiently waited. Like always, Namjoon sang while he worked. His mellow voice soothed her ears and her heart in a way that she had never quite felt before. She could listen to him sing to her all day.

Soon enough, Namjoon finished with the cooking and their meal was ready. He separated the rice into two bowls, a big one and a small one, and set them down on the table. The boy began to eat, but noticed that Nari was only pushing her food around her bowl.

"Is there something wrong?" He asked, "Why aren't you eating, darling? Look, your bowl even has bunnies on it."

"Want yours." The girl answered.

"You want mine?" Namjoon stifled a laugh, she was just too cute, "We have the same food, you know." He scooted his chair away from the table a little, "But I don't mind sharing though. Bring your spoon."

Nari happily climbed into his lap and instantly dug into the big bowl of rice in front of them. She looked up to the boy with a big smile, showing her gratitude. He patted her head and grabbed her plastic cup of banana milk from across the table before continuing to eat.

"Slow down, you've got rice all over your face," Namjoon wiped her cheeks with a napkin between bites of breakfast, "You act like I haven't fed you in weeks, hm?"

Nari stopped abruptly and shook her head, "No touch. Ouchies hurt."

"Oh, I'm sorry, I'm really sorry," He immediately stopped, "I didn't mean to hurt you, baby girl. I'm sorry. I won't do it again."

"It okay," She simply responded and went back to her rice. Namjoon very tenderly moved a piece of hair out of her face to reveal an angry purple bruise at the corner of her lips. He kissed her head and placed his other arm around her waist to stabilize her little body on his lap and they finished their breakfast.

"Blue one!" Nari exclaimed and pointed to a small butterfly on a group of pink flowers, "Joon! Look!"

"Whoa, it's so pretty!" He agreed and kneeled next to her, "Look, there's an orange one right over there!"

The little girl's eyes widened with excitement, but her expression soon changed when she heard the steady buzz of an insect behind her. She quickly hid in Namjoon's shadow with a whimper of fear.

"That's just a bumblebee, darling, it's not going to hurt you," The boy assured his timid companion, "Bees are good to us, they make honey and they help flowers too. Just look, okay?" He turned her attention to the fuzzy black and yellow creature moving slowly on a daisy, "See the yellow stuff in the center? That's called pollen. It sticks to them so when they go to another flower it'll rub off and help that flower bloom."

Nari carefully watched the bee fly off and land on another flower, just like he said, "Do butterflies do that too?"

"Uh huh, they do!" Namjoon nodded, "But butterflies are more interested in nectar, which is the sweet liquid inside the flower. It's like candy to them."

"Candy?" The girl repeated, reaching for the flower, "Tastes like candy?"

"Just for the butterflies!" He said quickly, sensing her next action, "It doesn't taste good to people." Namjoon breathed a sigh of relief as Nari drew her hand back. That was one disaster avoided for the day.

The boy gently picked a pink poppy and tucked it behind her ear. "Cute."

"You cute," Nari giggled and did the same, smiling happily as he sat down so she could reach his faded purple hair, "Cute Joon."

Suddenly, a new pair of people appeared in the butterfly garden; an older man and a girl about Nari's age. The new girl's eyes widened as she saw the two of them.

"Oh no! You have so many ouchies!" She exclaimed, referring to the bruises covering Nari's body, "You need a band aid right away!"

"Mira! It's not polite to point out other people's injuries," The older man scolded her firmly before Namjoon even had time to respond back, "You need to apologize right now."

Realizing her mistake, Mira immediately bowed, "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to hurt you."

The younger boy looked to Nari, who had clung to his side throughout the whole encounter. He gently nudged her shoulder, "Darling? What do you want to say?"

"I-It okay," She responded quietly with the blush on her cheeks growing redder by the second.

The other little girl breathed a sigh of relief, "Thank you. My name is Lee Mira, what's yours? Do you want to play together?"

Nari thought about it for a little. No one had ever asked her to play before. She looked to Namjoon for permission before answering. He nodded encouragingly.

"I'm Nari," She answered shyly, "I would like to play."

"Yay!" Mira cheered, "Let's go to the swings!"

The eager children headed off to the playground a few meters away, leaving their guardians behind. Namjoon quickly stood up and introduced himself to the older man, "I'm Nari's dad, Kim Namjoon. It's nice to meet you."

"It's nice to meet you too," His companion replied, "My name is Kim Ryo. Mira is my granddaughter. I apologize for her earlier outburst, I can assure you that she wasn't trying to be mean and I hope that Nari wasn't upset. She looks like a lovely little girl."

Namjoon politely bowed, "It's nice to meet you, Ryo. And thank you. I appreciate that. Let's find somewhere a little more comfortable to sit, okay?"

The two of them settled on a bench at the edge of the playground, close enough to keep an eye on their kids, but far away to have a little privacy. Namjoon smiled as he watched Nari and Mira interact. This was the very first time that she'd ever played with someone her age.

"So, how old is your daughter?" Ryo spoke, finally clearing the awkward silence.

"She's five," The younger boy replied with a flutter in his heart. This was the first time a stranger had called him a dad, "I adopted Nari about a month ago and she's my only child. Well, for now, anyways."

"Oh, so she's adopted? I don't know many people who are willing to do that. She's lucky."

Namjoon nodded, "She is. I don't know much about where she came from, but as soon as I saw her, I knew her home was with me." He paused, "You said Mira was your granddaughter, so that's means you have children, right? Would you mind maybe giving some parenting advice?"

"I would love to," Ryo nodded, "Are you nervous, Namjoon?"

"Yeah," The boy admitted sheepishly, "It's just, she's so little and I don't really know what I'm doing, you know? I don't want to mess up."

Ryo smiled, "Well, do you love your daughter?"

"Of course!" Namjoon exclaimed, "I'd do anything for her. I love Nari so much."

"That's all you need. Your job as a parent is to love her and watch her grow," The older man replied and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder, "I can tell that you care very deeply for your Nari and that she cares about you. You're a great father, Namjoon."

He let out a sigh of relief, "Thank you. I really needed to hear that."

"Of course," Ryo nodded, "And to give a little advice, just from me to you, enjoy the time when they're young. She'll grow up so fast you'll barely even notice. Before you know it your little girl will be leaving your arms and finding her own place in the world." He paused, "That's the one thing that's hard about being a parent, knowing that someday they'll have to leave you behind."

Namjoon wouldn't help but glance at the two children, who were now playing in the sandbox, and he tried to picture a grown up Nari. You'll always be little to me, He finally decided, No matter how old you are, I'll always hold you in my arms and I'll always protect you.
