Burnout (탈진)
Nari let out a deep yawn and shut her laptop. It was the day before finals week and she was a nervous wreck. Nothing seemed to be going right this year, all the classes seemed harder than usual, the content was boring, and most importantly, her literature teacher didn't seem to like anything that she wrote.
Out of all the years she had been in school, Nari had never encountered anything like it. Studying wasn't easy to her by any means and she worked hard for every A she earned but her safe place had always been with books. However, even that was slowly deteriorating. She hadn't read for fun in months. It wasn't even that she didn't have the time, she was just so tired of it all.
The girl managed to heave herself out of bed and open the door to her room. The dorm was uncharacteristically silent for a Friday evening, usually the boys would be playing video games or watching a movie by now. Nari hadn't seen much of them for the past few weeks since she had been opting to study at home instead of at the studio. Nevertheless, their kindness still shone bright and she could tell that they were trying their hardest to encourage her. Namjoon made sure to give her a good morning and goodnight hug and kiss, Jin always made her a bento for lunch no matter how busy he was, Jungkook would slip little drawings under her door, and the rest of them tried to help her out in any way that they could. Nari knew without a doubt that those boys loved her.
But Nari knew that with love came worry, and she didn't want them to worry about her. Suga especially was on her mind a lot as she was surely on his. The girl tried not to look into his eyes when they were together because she knew that if she did he would be able to see how truly depressed she was.
She meandered downstairs to look for something and her face broke into a big smile when she saw Jimin in the living room.
"Hello sweetheart," He wrapped her in a big hug, "It's good to see you."
"You too." Nari let out a deeply held sigh of relief as she relaxed into Jimin's chest. He gave the best hugs, and just for a moment, everything felt okay again.
The boy let go and gestured to a spot on the couch, "Sit. I'll make us some tea."
Nari nodded and took her place on the couch. Usually she would have contested, but she'd been doing so much by herself lately that it felt nice to be doted on by someone else. The girl noticed a book that had been left on Jimin's side of the couch...with the pages face down. The poor spine of the book looked like it was giving all that it had. She shook her head and immediately picked it up, sneaking a glance at the cover. It was The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, one of her and Namjoon's favorites.
"Don't lose my page!" Jimin exclaimed playfully, setting their cups down on the coffee table.
"I won't," Nari replied and quickly dog-eared the corner of the page as she set it down, "Is this Namjoon's copy? You probably shouldn't set it down all bent like that, it ruins the spine."
The boy blew on the steam coming from his tea, "Am I not supposed to do that? I was just so excited to see you that I didn't think about it. I'm sorry."
"It's okay." Her insides grew warm from the mention of her presence, "I didn't know you were home today. Are you liking the book?"
"I put in some extra hours at the studio and finished all my lines on Friday so I could take it easy this week." He explained, "I figured that someone ought to be home with you, and since I'm not as involved with production on this album, it might as well be me. And well, how do I explain this...the book is kinda freaky. I don't know if I like it yet."
Nari laughed, "Well, then you've gotten the point." She sighed, "Maybe if I turned into a massive cockroach then I wouldn't have to write all these essays."
"Don't worry, sweetheart, I would still love you even if you were a bug. I promise!"
Jimin's cheerful yet sincere words made her smile. Somehow he always knew how to cheer her up. The girl scooted closer to him on the couch so she could rest her head on his shoulder, and Jimin happily obliged.
"I hate to ask this," The boy spoke, "But did something happen between you and Suga? He's been missing you lately, you're his little buddy."
And just like that, Nari's sadness came crashing down again. "No, nothing happened," She explained carefully, "I just haven't been feeling great lately and I don't want to worry him. That's all."
"I don't know about that, sweetheart," Jimin said, gently brushing the hair out of her eyes, "He's very sensitive, you know. Suga probably already knows that you're sad and wants to help. He loves you the most out of everyone in the whole world but he doesn't want to be anywhere that he doesn't belong, you know? He would never tell you that though, so he's counting on you to come to him. "
Tears sprang to her eyes, "I'm sorry. I never want to make you guys sad."
"Oh, sweetie, you don't make us sad," Jimin wrapped the girl in a tight hug, "Don't think that, okay? You don't make us sad even when you're sad. You know those bentos that Suga has been making you-"
"Wait, Suga made those? Not Jin?" Nari asked.
The boy nodded, "Uh huh. He makes them for you every night so that you'll always have something to eat when you wake up."
"Of course it was Suga," Nari couldn't help but let out a little laugh, "He's such a dummy, letting other people take credit for his work. I bet he knew that I would think Jin made them." She paused, "'I love you. I want us to eat well'."
"Huh?"
"I love you. I want us to eat well'," The girl repeated, "It's from a poem that I like." She looked up at him, "Jimin, would you...would you mind helping me cook? I want to make something."
Jimin's face lit up in a big smile, "Of course! What do you want to make?"
"I was thinking pork fried rice." Nari's voice softened, "Let's make a lot of it. I'll bring some to the rest of the boys at the studio, they probably haven't had dinner yet."
"That's a great idea," He agreed and stood up, "Now let's get started!"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Alright, that's the last of them." Jimin safely packed the last tupperware into a canvas bag on the counter, "Are you sure that you don't want me to walk with you to the studio?"
"I'm sure," The girl nodded, "It's not far, I'll be okay." She enveloped him in a loving hug, "Thank you so much, Jimin. You always help me find my courage."
He gently kissed the top of her head before letting go, "'Though she be but little, she is fierce.'"
Nari smiled with recognition, "That's from A Midsummer Night's Dream. I love that play."
"I've been doing a lot of reading since the last time we properly talked. I was class president every year until I was an idol, you know," Jimin lovingly ruffled her hair, "Walk safe. Text me when you get there, okay?"
The brisk February air stung Nari's cheeks when she left the dorm. How long has it been since I've taken a walk outside? The girl asked herself. She didn't remember it being that cold last time.
Soon, she arrived at the BigHit building and after texting Jimin, she started for the studios. Like always, a seemingly endless amount of people littered the hallways to the elevator. However, the girl didn't recognize a single one.
"Hey! Nari!"
She turned around and immediately her face melted into a big smile, "Kaikai!"
"It's so good to see you!" Kai gave the girl a big hug, "Man, it feels like forever since we've talked."
"I'm sorry, it has been a while," Nari wriggled out of his arms to give a slight bow. As always, his hugs were a little too tight for her liking, but she knew that it was just a reflection of how much he cared. Which was a lot. "I've been really busy with studying." She explained, "How are you? You look like you've gained some muscle."
The boy nodded proudly, "Yup. It's for the new comeback, which is supposed to have some killer choreography. I've gotta start getting in shape early." He pressed the elevator button, "So I guess you're doing pretty well in school then."
"I'm trying," Nari let out a deep breath as the doors opened, "Nothing seems to be going right these days. I'll probably end up with a B after finals."
"A B is bad?"
"Yes. To me a B is very bad," She paused, "Sorry, that probably sounds really pretentious."
Kai shook his head, "No, it's okay, I understand. It's frustrating when you're struggling with something that you're usually good at." He patted her head, "But I believe in you. You'll get through it like you always do. And even if you don't get the grade you want, it's okay. Life will go on."
"Thank you, Kaikai," Nari smiled, "You always know what to say. Speaking of school, is it going okay for you?"
"Well, let's just say that a B is very very good for me."
The doors to the elevator opened with a ding and the both of them let out a sigh of disappointment. As always, they never had enough time. Nari dug around in her bag and handed the boy a small container of the fried rice. "Here, I made this with Jimin earlier."
"Thank you, flower girl," Kai spoke softly with gratitude, "You're wonderful."
Nari waved goodbye as the doors closed slowly, "You're welcome."
Suga's studio was the first door on the right. The girl took a deep breath as nervous butterflies started to gather in her stomach. Why am I scared? She asked herself, This is Suga. He loves me, there's no reason to be nervous.
But what if he's mad at you? A voice in the back of Nari's brain put her worst fear into words, All Suga has ever wanted to do was love you, and all you've been doing is shutting him out even though you know that it hurts him. You're a bad person and you don't deserve his love.
She shook her head and quickly knocked on the door before any more negative thoughts could enter her mind. Suga loves me, The girl reminded herself, I know that I haven't been as good as I could have been to him lately, but he understands. Suga loves me.
"Nari?"
The door opened to reveal just who she wanted to see. "I'm sorry," Nari immediately wrapped her arms around him in a hug with tears threatening to spill over, "I'm so sorry, Shu-ger."
"You have nothing to apologize for." His voice was as soft and kind as always and comforting hands rubbed her back, "I'm happy to see you, lovely girl. I missed you."
"I missed you too." She let go to look into his eyes and like always, they read her like a book. But Nari wasn't afraid anymore of what they would see.
