Seven

As Cressida slowly trails along a few paces behind Din, as he clanks ahead, his body rigid and his head facing forward, never once looking back, she knows that he's pissed off at her.

Cressida doesn't understand why Din is angry with her. As far as she's concerned, she hasn't done anything wrong.

Sure, she wasn't exactly honest with Din about who she was. However, he hadn't exactly asked her who she was, either.

Cressida foolishly thought if she didn't press Din about his life, he wouldn't press her about hers.

It was a fair trade, in Cressida's mind. She wouldn't expect a Mandalorian to give away any damn secrets about themselves.

Not to mention, he's also a bounty hunter on top of being a Mandalorian. So why the hell should he care if she didn't want to tell him anything about herself?

He's being a complete hypocrite. Cressida thinks bitterly. He wouldn't tell me a damn thing about himself, but he expects me to tell him everything?

Cressida kicks at a small stone in her path, sending it flying off to the side, striking the side of a metal building.

Din doesn't even turn at the sound. For some reason, that only angers Cressida more. She wants to rush in front of him, grab him by his shoulders and shake him.

As if that would do much good.

They reach another metal building, this one has piles of different ship parts, scattered along the ground.

Cressida's attention is immediately drawn to a short woman, with frizzy, blonde hair, barking orders at some droids, who are trying to repair a speeder.

"No! Not like that, you stupid droid!" The woman's voice raises above the loud sounds of a mechanical drill.

"How many times do I have to tell you how to install a thermostat? Jeez Louise!"

The woman's attention snaps over to Din as he approaches her. He stops about six feet away and watches as the droids scatter.

"Well, well, well!" The woman stomps over to Din, hands planted firmly on her hips, her head tilted up, scowling.

"I hadn't seen you here in a lightyear! What'd you do, crash that bucket of bolts and now you want old Peli to fix you up with something better?"

"I do need some repairs," Din admits. "I'll bring it by later on."

Peli's attention snaps over to Cressida, who's just standing there, trying to remain invisible.

"Who's this? You decide to keep another bounty?"

"No. She's was an...accident."

Cressida feels strangely offended by Din's choice of words. She was an accident?

What the hell is wrong with this stupid Mandalorian?

"I'm not a damn accident," Cressida says, seething. "I was trying to escape from the shit hole I was dragged into, against my will!"

Peli chuckles, clearly amused by Din and Cressida and whatever mess they'd found themselves in.

"Shut up!" Din snaps impatient, waving a hand in Cressida's general direction.

"We'll be back," Din adds, to Peli. She nods.

Din turns and starts heading towards the town. Cressida debates rather she should follow him or simply stay here, with Peli.

"Whatever you did to him," Peli says to Cressida. "You really did a number on the poor guy."

Cressida scowls and stalks off in the same direction as Din. She may not want be around him right now.

But she certainly isn't going to stick around Peli and listen to her start stating all the things that she may or may not have done to the Tin Man.

....

Din and Cressida avoid each other for the rest of the day.

Din decides to try his luck in a Cantina, having a few drinks, while Cressida looks through the different shops in town.

She's still upset with Din for acting the way he did when she finally admitted who she was and what she was involved in.

It wasn't her choice! Her parents were dead, killed by the very same people she was forced to spy for.

There wasn't much honest work to be found for an innocent, young woman.

Unless she wanted to be a prostitute.

While Cressida may have been desperate, she wasn't that desperate.

Besides, the imperial troops had found her before she even had much of a chance to decide anything else for her future.

Cressida absently looks through the clothing in one shop, her mind wandering straight to...Din.

She wonders what he's doing and desperately wants for things to return to the way they were before Cressida confessed her secrets to him.

She thinks of that moment, when they were on Endor, of Din removing his glove. Of how his hot, bare skin felt against hers.

Of him tenderly resting the tip of his helmet against her forehead and the feel of the cool metal against her skin.

Cressida's eyes start to water and she quickly leaves the shop, heading for the ship, even though she knows that Peli and her crazy band of droids are still working on it.

By the time, Cressida reaches Peli's shop, her brisk pace slows. She sees...Din, standing there.

Cressida stays rooted to the spot where she stopped, just staring at Din.

His back is to her. He doesn't turn. Cressida can feel the tears coming again.

Din abruptly turns, catching sight of Cressida, just standing there, her head hanging, her gaze trained on the ground.

Something strange stirs inside Din. He's feeling a little less hostile towards Cressida.

Especially seeing her like this. Broken and sad. He sighs. He knows he probably overreacted when she told him the truth.

He'd been the one to ask her. She told him what he wanted to know. And how did he react when she'd complied?

He'd been angry and upset. He knows it's only because of...Grogu.

Even though he's gone, Din was still trying to protect the little guy. Din feels a heaviness settle into his chest and gut.

He still misses the little wamp rat. Din looks away. He closes his eyes, trying to remember the last time he held Grogu in his arms.

It seems like a century ago.

Din hears Cressida walking towards him and stopping just behind him. She doesn't speak.

Din slowly turns, stepping closer and reaching for one of Cressida's hands. She doesn't pull away.

She raises her head, her eyes locking on to Din's helmet, as though she's actually looking into his eyes.

"I'm sorry," Din whispers, giving Cressida's hand a gentle squeeze. He notices her mouth tremble.

"Me too." Din boldly reaches up, gently tucking some loose tendrils of Cressida's hair behind her left ear.

"I..I shouldn't have lost my temper like I did. I asked you for the truth and you told me."

"You shouldn't have had to ask, Din Djarin. I should have just told you right off."

"No." Cressida blinks in surprise. Is Din actually admitting that he's wrong?

"You were right," Din continues. "You didn't ask me about my life. I shouldn't have expected you to share yours."

Cressida's eyes fill with tears that spill over and cascade down her cheeks, dripping off her chin.

Din tenderly reaches up, gently wiping them away with his gloved hand.

"Oh, Din!" Cressida pulls her hand free from Din's, throwing her arms around him, pressing close.

Din gently wraps his arms around Cressida and gently strokes her hair as she sobs against his metal armor.

"Well, I think that should about do it!" Peli's voice rings out, causing both Din and Cressida to jump in surprise and quickly pull away from one another.

As Cressida wipes away the remainder of her tears, Din walks over to Peli, reaching inside his pouch and removing a handful of credits, dropping them into Peli's outstretched hands.

"Thank you." Din motions at Cressida, who quickly heads closer and starts walking up the ramp.

"You behave yourself out there, Mando," Peli says, giving him a stern look.

"I don't make promises I can't keep." Din starts heading up the ramp himself.

"Well, at least try to look after that girl." Din turns and Peli gives him a wink.

"I'll try."

"And possibly come back here sooner?" Peli shouts as Din presses the button to raise the ramp.

He merely gives Peli a quick wave before he disappears from her sight.

Peli chuckles again. That Mandalorian sure knows how to find trouble.

Even when he doesn't mean to.
