3. Sides
I walk down the stairs.
My Insta notifications are low, so I take the time to look at them. But before I'm even downstairs, my phone is laying on the ground. I gasp and run down.
There's a burst in the screen, almost as big as the whole phone. I glare at Dane, who slapped it out of my hand. "Oh, you're going to pay for this."
I narrow my eyes when he raises an eyebrow. "Why would I? You didn't pay for my phone," he shrugs and walks to the dinner room.
Asshole.
I exhale, trying to clam my anger. What is he even doing here?
Jack walks down the stairs and I turn around, glaring at him. He sighs. "What did Dane do? Oh man, I said he had to behave himself," he groans. I show him my screen.
"I've never had a burst in my screen, I'm always careful to not let it fall. He's gonna pay," I say and Jack shrugs. "Willow, I can't tell him to pay. You're a big girl, you'll figure it out."
He walks to the dinner room. What? He chooses... Dane's side? I run back upstairs, slamming my door.
He never chose Dane's side.
I unlock my nightstand and pick up my diary. I wipe the tears on my cheeks away and start writing in it.
Sweet diary,
it happened. Jack chose Dane's side. I'm officially alone.
Jack was my best friend, but not anymore. Dane took him from me. All I have left is Delilah.
How can I fix this?
Being nice to Dane? If he likes me, maybe I can join their friend group. I'll try
Willow
I lock it back up in my nightstand and run downstairs, skipping breakfast. Mom smiles at me. "Excited for school?" she asks and I shrug.
"Love you!" I tell her, after which I give her a kiss. I look around, searching Dad. "Where is he?" She smiles apologetic. "Sorry, honey. He had an emergency in the hospital," she says and I nod. "Tell him I love him when he comes home, okay?"
She nods and I walk to my bike. My tyres. They were perfect yesterday, how...?
Then, I see it. A knife next to my my bike. I feel tears behind my eyes, but ignore them. He's not worth them.
I hear a honk and jump up. Dane's Jeep. I slightly shake my head. No way in hell I'm going in that car. Jack's head appears from the back seat. "Willow! Come on!"
He knew. He knew Dane was planning on doing that.
I sigh and walk over to the freaking Jeep. I want to open the door to the back seat, but Jack locks it. My eyes widen.
Nah uh.
"Fine. I'll just walk," I say and start walking. I feel arms around me and I scream, but the person throws me in a car. With panic filling my body, I look up. Dane's smirking at me and Jack is laughing in the back seat.
I calm down, trying to keep my breath even. No kidnap. No kidnap. But now I'm in the front seat, next to Dane. I shift to the door, as far as possible from him and look outside.
"You're an asshole, Dane."
It blurts out my mouth, I didn't mean to say it. Luckily, he just starts laughing. "Oh, Willow. If you think I'm an asshole now, I'd like to have you see me in a game," he smirks. I cock an eyebrow.
"You're inviting me to a game?" I ask, not believing him, and he chuckles. "Willow, we're in the same team."
Oh. Right.
"Uh.. I know, I was just testing you," I stutter and he laughs again. Jerk. I shut my mouth for the rest of the ride and shoot out of the car as soon as we're on the parking lot.
I run to my locker, I'm almost too late. Delilah joins me and we walk together to our class. She's rambling over some dress, but I'm not really listening to know the details. What do I care about a dress?
"Ah, Willow," I hear someone say my name and turn around, to face Mr. Minto. "Yes?" I ask politely. Delilah makes some disapproving noises and walks in the class. "A student decided to switch classes, could you introduce him to the schedule and classroom?"
I nod, smiling. "When does he start?" I ask. "Today. I'll lead him to the classroom as soon as we're done in my office."
He walks away and I walk in the class. Math.
I sigh and sit down. I hate math. I'm horrible in it. All my classes go well, except math. It makes me feel dumb. Dad was so good in it, and I'm ruining his expectations. I want to do it good, but it's just so hard.
"Welcome, class. I have your tests from last week."
Shit.
"Ana, 9"
"Brooke, 7"
"Willow, try harder next time, a 4"
I swallow my tears. Try harder? I tried so hard for this. I worked every day for over a week. Dad will be disappointed, again.
I stare at my test. All red. I don't even know what I did wrong. I look around, and see that Delilah is sitting in front of me, talking to June. I'm sitting alone, but I don't mind that. I like the calmth.
And this way, the new student can sit next to me.
And almost as if they can read my thoughts, the door slams open and mister Minto walks in. "Hey, class. Maybe you've heard it, but there's a new student in this class. He's not new to school, just switched classes. Come in, mister Wainsworth."
No.
No, no, no.
Not Wainsworth. Not Dane.
But he walks in and smirks as soon as he sees me. He walks to my desk and sits down next to me. I hide my face with my hand and he chuckles.
Oh, come on.
"Dane, here's your test you took last week."
The teacher gives him his test. I take a glimpse on his sheet. 10.
The tears well up. Even Dane is smarter than me. I feel him looking at me and I hide my face and my sheet with my hands. Embarrassment fills me.
I glance at him and see he's frowning. He shows his hand. "Sheet," he orders. I give him my test, but stare at my desk. I can't look at him when he reads my answers, learning how dumb I am.
But he doesn't laugh. I look at him in the corner of my eye, and see he's... mad? His shoulders are stiff and he has a murderous look in his eyes while he compares our tests.
"Willow! What the fuck is this?" he growls and I cringe. "Don't tell anyone, please. I feel bad enough already," I sniffle. "Because you have a ten?" He sounds confused. I am confused.
"Idiot! It's a four, don't you see?" I whisper and slap the back of his head. He sighs and rubs the place I hit him. "Willow, you have the exact same answers as me, and I have a ten. Look!"
I compare our tests and yes, the answers are the same. What? I look at him and he nods.
"That fucking bastard fails you each time, doesn't he? Let me see your previous tests," he commands and I quickly show them. He compares them to his and grows more mad.
"They're the same. They're the fucking same!" he shouts. The teacher gives him a look. "Do you have a problem, Wainsworth?" he asks. I freeze. Please, no.
"Actually, yes. What the fuck is this? You can't just fail Willow! She has a ten on almost each test, but you give her a four?" Dane snarls. The teacher gasps and I want to be invisible. Please, kill me now.
Dane stands up and walks to the teacher's desk. "This is bullshit! Why would you do this?" The teachers gulps. "I don't like her attitude.." he hesitantly says. My eyes widen.
My attitude? I'm always quiet and accurate!
"Her attitude?" Dane barks. "She's the best student you have! Give her the grades she deserve and stop underestimate her!" he yells.
He walks back to our desk and gives me a pat on my back. "I guess you're lucky I switched classes."
Sure.
