Sweet Desire
Chapter 5
"We're all in the same game; just different levels. Dealing with the same hell; just different Devils"
~~~~~
Adam found his senses being flooded. For a moment he couldn't remember what had happened, but the memories of the recent events resurfaced.
His father, the fight, the poison, everything.
Everything was a blur and he was hit with an onslaught of emotions, namely guilt and fear. The memories were so vivid and it was as if he could see and feel everything that had happened again. The very thought sent shivers and he choked back sobs.
Adam hardly notice an object being pointed at his face. He was so caught up with what he was being forced to remember that when he noticed an object being pointed in his face he almost flinched. And he was even more surprised by the fact that there was a man standing in front of him holding the object.
He neither heard nor saw him come in, his memories clouded his sight in the first waking moments since regaining consciousness. And the person he saw shocked him, Jason.
Adam did a slight jump but Jason didn't move or react. Adam noticed a tremble in Jason's hands. As someone with fighting experience and having killed before....Adam could see fear in Jason's movements.
Despite the strong feelings of hate Jason felt for Adam, the daunting feeling of killing was overpowering.
There was a click and Jason let out a shaky breath.
"Adam!" Adam looked over and saw Ian run into the throne room. Ian's eyes spotted Jason and immediately spurred into action. Ian threw a dagger he pulled from his side into Jason's direction, Jason cried out before he could even react. A loud bang resounded and Adam suddenly clutched his shoulder and let out an agonizing cry.
Jason fell back and Ian ran towards Jason, "Bastard!" He kicked the item in Jason's hand away from him and proceeded to immobilize him.
Jordan ran in, "Oh Notch, Adam!"
Adam grinned slightly, trying to play the pain off, but he winced as he tried to stand, "Don't worry about it...I'm just glad to know you both--"
Jordan rushed towards Adam, however he passed right through him. Adam was stunned to silence and looked back to see Jordan crouching beside him, but he was right here!
Adam took a step back and spun around. His leg swung straight through Ian, "Oh my Notch...I'm...I'm dead!" Adam screeched.
"I wouldn't say that. You're more of between life and death actually."
His heart skipped a beat and Adam nearly jumped out of his skin. He looked around wildly for the owner of the unfamiliar voice.
As his eyes skimmed over the room he noticed the shape of a person over by the throne. A man in a seated position floating several inches above the actual seat of the throne, but the most shocking thing was the man's glowing white eyes.
His jaw hung agape for several moments before he stuttered, "Y-you're Herobrine."
"Yes, Hero for short--I would've thought that it was obvious," he pointed to his teal shirt and Adam took several steps forward to see what he was pointing at. Adam made out a small rectangle pinned to his clothes that read 'Hello, I am Hero!'
"You see, most people either faint, yell curse words, or call for my brother's forgiveness...not sure where that one comes from however." Herobrine offered Adam a lopsided grin.
"You know," Herobrine stopped floating and stood up. He approached Adam slowly, "It would be nice for a change if people didn't scream in terror, didn't curse in vain, and didn't pray for forgiveness."
"Uh...ok?" Adam trailed off, he looked back. He still saw Jordan kneeling beside his body and Ian restraining Jason. He had no answers as to how something like this happened, only that the God of Death floated--er stood before him.
"Instead, oh I don't know, people could try a nice greeting for once. Something like--Oh hello Hero! Nice meeting you on this fine--what time is it?" Herobrine interrupted himself and glanced in Adam's direction, pausing his steps only to wait for an answer. Adam was about to answer afternoon when Hero picked back up where he left off, "Yes, afternoon. Thank you Adam, sometimes I forget the time being an ageless god and all. Anyways--Nice meeting you on this fine afternoon."
Adam didn't quite know what exactly was going on anymore, however he decided to say something.
"Well, ok...Ahem. H-hello Herobrine..." Adam did a slight wave, "Nice meeting you on this fine afternoon?"
Herobrine stopped walking and winked, "See, now someone gets it! That's what I like about you Adam, you're far more open than most people, even going as far as to stand against your own society's standards for the sake of others. Not that I'm here to interfere in any of that, more of here to set things in motion, you know...godly balance and stuff."
"What?" Adam tilted his head.
"Say, speaking of balance, remember your pal Seto?"
Adam perked up, "Seto? You've seen Seto?"
"Of course I've seen him, he lives in my home at this very moment, he's probably cooped in one of my libraries--he's quite the bookworm you know," Herobrine rolled his eyes, "But none of that is relevant...at least not quite yet. We have bigger concerns to discuss, as I'm sure you are curious as to why I'm even here in the first place."
"B-bu--" Herobrine held up his hand stopping Adam from finishing his sentence.
"Ah, really, we have some business to discuss," With one snap of his fingers Herobrine vanished and reappeared back on the throne, this time seated with his legs crossed.
Adam blinked in shock. He realized the room was unusually quiet and when he turned around his body, Jordan, Ian, and Jason were gone. He saw a trail of blood smeared along the ground leading outside the door.
"First," Adam whirled back around to listen as Herobrine spoke, "I'm sure you have many questions, not including the ones about Seto--"
"Y-yes, I--"
"To answer one of them, you aren't dead. You are dying...but no you will not die, so rest easy now. Next I am indeed reading your mind. Third, stop asking about Seto, we will get to tat later. And finally, or at least the last of your hundreds of questions I will answer is, the reason we are meeting is because something has happened or will happen or could happen but that is all up to you and I am here to receive your answer."
"My answer? About what?"
"We'll get to that, first, take a moment to process everything that I have just said," Herobrine waved and Adam blinked. His mind raced with a million thoughts. He still didn't understand what was going on, this must be some trick. He's probably having some sort of weird dream, or maybe he really did die. This must be the work of that poison.
"I can understand your skepticism, but try to have a little more faith in me, I am the God of Death after all. If it was your time to die, I would've already ferried your soul away by now, but I haven't' because it isn't your time now."
"You ready?"
Adam hesitated before nodding.
"Good," Herobrine smiled, his eyes flashed a little brighter as he settled into the throne and made himself comfy, "While I cannot disclose the full reason for why I have come to you specifically or what has happened, will happen, or could happen, just know that I will give you two choices. Think of this as a part of your fate, one moment in your ever-changing destiny, a chance for one fleeting desire to be fulfilled or lost."
"Ok."
"Whatever choice you make is yours, there is no right or wrong answer. Each choice will have its own benefits and repercussions, but those are for you to deal with, understand?"
Adam nodded, he felt a bubbling fear in his gut. What could possibly be the choice he had to make.
"Now that you understand all of that, are you ready?"
Adam nodded.
There was silence, Adam looked up at Herobrine. He seemed deep in thought, his glowing eyes flickering as if he was weighing his options, trying to decide the best way to phrase his words.
"Not to long ago...you killed your father. The memory of doing so has left you scarred in more ways than one, correct?"
Adam flinched at his words and placed a hand over his mouth at the memory. He was overcome by a sudden bout of shaking and a desire to vomit. The phantom feeling of the warm, sticky blood made Adam gag as he struggled to speak, "N-no, I...I know he did terribly things and that his views were twisted and cost many people their lives. I know I should...I should be glad he's dead and can no longer harm people--and I am! Don't get me wrong but..." Adam shuddered, his knees trembled before he slunk to the ground and hugged himself tight. The memory of hold his father's body, the memory of his last words, the memory of all the blood--so...much...blood.
"He's your father Adam. Most people can't turn their backs against someone they love or even know, no matter what they have done. And those that can often feel a twinge of regret or even guilt."
Adam nodded.
"I can help," Herobrine offered. Adam glanced up in surprise.
"H-how?"
"I'm a God Adam, I'm a God of Death. I'm a God of the things most people deem bad--death, destruction, chaos. I can permanently delete the scars left by the death of your father. You'll remember it, but it won't haunt you anymore--"
"Yes! Please! I'll do anything!" Adam pushed himself up and took several steps toward the God.
"But," Herobrine interrupted, "Your friend Seto will forever remain trapped within the Nether, and you will never see him again.
Adam didn't say a word.
"That, is your first choice. Eternal peace from the single memory that will haunt you for the rest of your life or..."
"O-or...?" Adam croaked.
"Or I will grant you power--Adam, I choose you as my candidate. I choose you to be the first human to hold and wield a fraction of my power for as long as you live. This power will allow you to reconnect the gateway to Seto and free him from the Nether."
"But...why can't you do it?"
"I cannot. That would involve me directly offsetting the balance for the sake of a personal goal. It is not my place to do so."
Adam glanced at the ground, his eyes skimmed the surface as he thought, "Th-then..."
"But, there is a price. Power always comes with a price. First, the memories of your father's death will remain to haunt you, in fact the scars may even intensify should you accept my power. My powers are not easy to hold, which is why I have never granted them to anyone."
"Next, you will live every waking moment of your life seeing death. It will come at random, one moment your life will be normal the next you could see the death of a loved one, of a stranger, of a person you deem innocent, or a person you deem not, any one in eye sight is fair game for these visions. The visions will never be the same and you can never change when a person is fated to die. That power is not at your disposal."
Herobrine paused, his glowing eyes grew dimmer and he frowned, "If you think the trauma you face now is bad, then know that if you choose this path, it will only get worse. There are more details, but I will only explain them later should this be the path you choose."
"I..." Adam gulped, "I don't understand? Why me, why are you giving this choice to me?"
"Adam," Adam met Herobrine's eyes as Herobrine leaned forward. His expression darkned and grew serious, "Never before has there ever been 3 god candidates in existence at once. Only one is missing, mine. I have never once given even a sliver of my power to anyone, because while the other gods may disagree that their powers are harder to wield, I have no doubt that mine is the most scarring. Ender's abilities coming in as a close second."
"My powers are hard to manage...and painful to hold. I live in a world where I must watch everything ever created die, and I must make sure it happens. I live in a world where I am the bad guy because I am the force that misguides and leads people astray so that destiny is given a chance to swing one way or the other. I live in a world where I am the dark and my brother is the light. Do you understand?"
Adam sat quietly and stared at the ground. Herobrine sighed, "As much as I would love to talk more, I am very busy," Herobrine stood. The movement and noise from the action caused Adam to look up once more, "Just know that whatever choice you make is final and can never be changed."
Adam shuddered as the thoughts of his father;s death began to weigh on his mind. The fear of having to live with that the rest of his life was overwhelming.
"I..." Adam shook his head, tears pricked his eyes. Everyone had given up on finding Seto because he convinced everyone they needed to. They only did so because Adam didn't want to face the fact that all this was his fault. Seto would have been so much happier had he been able to save his parents. Now because of him Seto has been stuck in the Nether for so long...and here was the perfect chance to finally break him out.
But could he handle the pain? The scars? The power?
Adam balled his hands into a fist and gritted his teeth, he squeeze his eyes shut and felt the tears that had formed fall away. He let out a pent up breath, of course he couldn't be selfish. Never in a million years.
Adam dug his nails into the side of his arm, the pain an obvious wake up call. "I've decided."
Herobrine nodded. Adam's golden eyes met Herobrine's glowing ones, "I want that power--I don't care what kind of burning nether I have to go through, I don't care about the costs, I'll throw everything away, even my own sanity if it means I can bring Seto back and keep my promise to him."
"I promised I would protect him, and I mean to keep my word."
"Good luck," Adam blinked as Herobrine waved his hand in the air. Adam felt nauseous and he stumbled backwards. He blinked again and felt himself being half carried, half dragged. Pain ripped through his entire body and he attempted to wriggle in pain.
He let out short quick gasps of pain, he felt sturdy hands support him, "Shhh, Adam, don't worry. I've got you," he recognized the voice of his brother and noticed as Jordan helped carry Adam down stone steps.
Adam couldn't tell if everything that had happened was a dream. He turned his head slightly and saw Ian pushing a captured Jason forwards with one dagger in his hand, and in the other...Adam caught a glimpse of something gold and gleaming.
A crown.
His father's crown.
And with that...Adam lapsed back into pain and fell unconscious again.
